    Wifi is great, but for pure speed and reliability nothing beats a good ol' ethernet cable! However, physically getting a cable from your router to your computer is another story altogether. In this video I install an ethernet cable directly from my garage into the second floor of my house to get those juicy gamer internet speeds.

    I did a similar job several years ago because although the power line adapters I was using were reliable they were slow and wouldn't work on a sub panel. As you noted, it wasn't very expensive and was well worth it. At the same time I purchased my own cable modem with a four router ports for more flexibility (and to save the money on the monthly modem rental).

    Use cable conduit. That way, you can protect your cable better, and if the current one becomes faulty, you can just put in the new one by tying the old one to the new one while pulling out from the other side.

      Welcome to Australia, where you are actually supposed to pay someone with a cabling license to do this job (because govt) & you can enjoy your glorious blazing fast NBN throughout the home !
      Slight correction though, highest speed tier for residential NBN is 1000/50 (fibre & coax only), so you are up to 10x higher on upload & I believe you guys have options above 1Gbps (?), which we do not on residential NBN (nor likely will in our lifetimes).. So a 3Gbps plan would be 3x faster... if that is a thing there.
      However here, HFC/FTTP is only available to portions of the country here, otherwise 100/40 is the dream lol

    Not sure what they’re called elsewhere but you could’ve used glow-rods/fish-sticks or fishing-tape to fish the lines through the insulated walls. And as a former cable guy, you actually have a pretty decent sized attic. I had to run lines through much tighter attics.

    Wired connection is the best for sure. But just so you know, Asus routers have Wi-Fi mesh operation mode so if you use wired backhaul, you can position the routers in way where you have good coverage over the home space.
    the system will use the rssi information from client devices to roam clients from node to node as you move around throughout your house and in my testing it seems to work well. You can manually configure parameters of the rssi value to trigger roaming, etc.
    Some clients are problematic and don’t always roam on their own but you can use the gui to optimize your network and get clients to roam to the nearest node.

    I was having all sorts of network problems with my Mac. Had no idea what the issue was.... then I replaced the FIOS given router with an ASUS gaming router (about $200) and haven't had a problem since. It's really amazing that this was the source of all the network glitches. But hardwiring it with ethernet brought ping times down to about 10ms or less.

  • @MarbsMusic
    @MarbsMusic Рік тому +1

    I use 10GB, even though I only have a 1GB uplink, ethernet for all our gaming PCs because ping matters but for laptops and TVs I have a 1GB MESH system at the house. Yes it wasn't cheap but our MBPs are on it as is my Studio which is on the other side of the house. No it's not as fast as the direct connections but it means the family can use their laptops anywhere in the house it the rest of the family is too loud... which happens all the time with 4 teenage boys.
    For your situation your solution is perfect, gratz on the creativity!

    Make sure your Ethernet cable is pure copper and not CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum). This should be brought up a lot more often. Always read the specs for bare/pure copper and not CCA.

    I don't understand why you run both a 1gbit and 10gbit cable instead of going 10gbit for just one or both?
    I mention this because I noticed that your gaming pc has a 2.5gbit LAN port and the same on your thunderbolt 4 dock which means both your pc and Mac are able to use higher than 1gbit connection. And then you're still future proofed for that NAS when you get a 10gbit adapter for either your Mac or PC 😀

    • @everyhandletaken

      One thing for certain is that the chance of ever getting > 1Gbps internet connection in Australia, is about the same chance as the planet becoming zero emissions in the next 30 days. So if WAN bandwidth was the goal here, mission accomplished.
      But yes, for LAN, it makes sense to future-proof while you are making the effort to run the cable.

    I did something similar quite a few years ago - one length of ethernet to the far end of the house which is where the TV and streaming boxes live, and another one to an upstairs office. The wifi reception upstairs was actually not bad, but as it was overlooking the street I was also picking up wifi from dozens of houses around, often on the same channel. In my case I had the job done professionally, and interestingly the last time I spoke to the cabler, he said that these days he would recommend a mesh wifi solution rather than cable.

    • @tomburke5311
      @tomburke5311 Рік тому

      @@garrykanter5773 Well, potentially, but they do have the advantage of flexibility - it's a lot easier to move a mesh station than it is to re-cable! I don't know how it is in Australia, but to be honest my wifi was always pretty good; the limiting factor was generally the actual bandwidth from my provider. In fact I've just done a test and obtained some embarrassing results. In the upstairs office, the iMac (cabled) reached 50mbps download and 10mbps upload; the iPhone 14 Pro on wifi managed 51mbps download and 10mbps upload; and with wifi turned off (i.e. using cellular only), the iPhone achieved 235mbps download and 32mbps upload. So it looks as if at this time of day (early morning) the ethernet cable is no faster than the wifi - those first two sets of figures are at the top limit of my broadband connection. The iPhone cellular connection is quite startling, esp. as it's on 4G - I don't have 5G locally. That said, I think the modems on the iPhone 14 Pro are much more high performance than on my old phone - probably it was using multiple channels to get that result. Perhaps those results reflect how technology has got more efficient in recent devices?

    Of course Ethernet is better than WiFi. Not only are radio waves transmitted through air and other obstacles less efficient and prone to interference compared to copper but the protocol used by WiFi is also less efficient. Ethernet uses CSMA/CD whereas WiFi uses CSMA/CA which adds overhead. You only need to worry about network collisions in Ethernet if you’re using an (ancient) Ethernet hub that connects a lot of computers, a problem easily solved by an Ethernet switch. Of course an ancient 10Mbps Ethernet over cat3 won’t outperform 5.4Gbps WiFi 6E but gigabit Ethernet usually will, depending on distance from WAP and build material of walls. 10Gbps Ethernet is even better but not standard on most computers.

    Is Powerline really that expensive though? I get the materials you got for this was cheap, but decent Gigabit Powerline adapter packs cost like $70-120 per pack of two, depending on the speeds and features we want. And Powerline adapters are pretty easy to install. I just feel like that's a pretty ok price to pay for the convenience and not having to install a real ethernet port by going through the walls and roof.

    • @CreatedTech
      @CreatedTech  Рік тому

      $120 vs $50, and the $50 version will have much better performance and longevity compared to powerline. All it takes is about 2 hours of your time to install.

      @@Raghav-ww1bt It seems in America we don't invest and focus energy on upload speeds. Two main reasons: 1. We are a nation where the vast majority are download consumers. It dwarfs our upload transmissions. 2. For almost everything we do, we have found that we only really need 10-15 upload for nearly every upload challenge. Anything extra is just extra gravy and because our networks are run by just a few corporate conglomerates, they don't see a need to spend their revenue expanding what would really be excess upload bandwidth.
