You forgot to talk about the most interesting aspect of this one - the fact that Neverland is attuned to Peter's feelings, so the land/weather transforms based on his emotional state (a clever way of literalizing how kids are trapped in their own perspective, thinking only about their own "little worlds").

Fun fact about the narration; there was actually a deleted scene, only available on the DVD special features, where the narrator is revealed to be an adult Wendy telling the story to Jane. Peter visits and is deeply upset to see that Wendy has grown up, but then takes Jane instead.

Completely disagree; Peter Pan and Wendy portrayed the characters not only in writing but an acting way better. Waymore consistent for what it was, and not jumping all over the place not only and it’s editing that this piece of crap is. Hook’s Story makes a lot more sense there, not to mention with his amazing backstory, and as pointed out here, the fact that he and George Darling are played by the same actor even if they do look Completely different that you don’t think they’re different people,They don’t add up and work with each other the way that they’re supposed to. At least Peter Pan and Wendy had the sense to have them be different people to try to avoid this kind of thing, and it’s not the first adaptation to do this, it actually makes it ironically more loyal to the book than any other version. Also live action little mermaid is quite good, one of the actually good live action remakes that overall captured the fun and consistency of the original, even better in fact, I don’t understand why even though you don’t like it can’t at least say that

I don't think the aunt was Slightly's actual biological mother. I think the whole point being made here - and it isn't made well, sadly - is that she desperately WANTS a child of her own, but as a spinster aunt, she _doesn't have one._ That is, I think, why she was so eager to take on the raising of Wendy to be a "proper young woman." Slightly is, for some reason, more drawn to her than the Darlings, and Tink kindly uses fairy dust to get around the Aunt's normal propriety and reticence against impulse to get her to do what she wants and both she and Slightly need.

@@vetarlittorf1807 Jason Isaacs, the actor for Captain Hook, also said that Wendy has a pubescent crush on Hook in this film: "J.M. Barrie wrote a book about a little girl [Wendy] who was hitting puberty...in those days, [in the Edwardian era], that meant you'd better have sex, have children, and build a family...[so she goes to Neverland], but there's only one man in that world [Hook], and he's strangely attractive. Sexually, there's something weird about his allure, but he's also repulsive." Hook looks like Mr. Darling because Wendy's father is the only example she can think of that represents what marriage and a husband would look like, but everything else about Hook comes from Wendy's fantasies from reading "Treasure Island" and pirate books, which were popular in the Edwardian era.

I saw this in theaters as a kid and it's been my favorite adaptation of the Peter Pan story. The themes of growing up, knowing when to grow up, responsibilities, and Peter and Wendy's love story are handled so well here. Wendy wants to have a love with Peter but Peter is afraid of what that means: growing up. And the way Hook, played excellently by Jason Isaacs, taunts Peter with the idea that Wendy will move on and there will be another person in Peter's place because there is nothing he can offer her as just a boy is such a real feeling people go through in life. Not just in childhood but even adulthood. That if you refuse to grow up and take on responsibilities you will get left behind while everyone else moves on. I think that's so poignant and this movie first really introduced me to that idea as a kid and it's never left me. Beautifully done.

Perhaps on the subject of why the father character is so timid at work rather than angry at home is just because he is so frustrated at being looked down upon at work that when he goes home he takes it out on his family. Similar to how Captain Hook takes out his rage for not being young and free anymore on Peter who is everything he wants to be. Peter being able to fly is a nod to the freeness that slowly leaves as you grow up exploring why hook never could.

This version is actually more significant than you're giving credit: while there may have been several live-action theatrical sound adaptations since this one, this is actually the first one. Yes, the first live-action theatrical sound adaptation of Peter Pan (no, Hook doesn't count) wasn't made until 2003, almost 100 years after the play was first performed. What I also think is unique about this adaptation is that it foregrounds the sexual material as far as its PG rating will allow. This whole idea that little boys and little girls reach that age where they start to have funny and uncomfortable feelings about each other is all over this version, and I remember when I watched it in theaters, I was 15 years old and recognizing a lot of those feelings (I was a bit of a late bloomer) made this version quite significant. Seeing Peter Pan as something this sexually charged was novel for those of us who grew up with the Disney animated film.

The aunt is not meant to be literally Slightly''s actual mother. If that was the case, the movie would have let us know one of her children got lost the same way Peter Pan did as an infant. She is Slighty's mother in the same way that Mrs. Darling is now the other boys' mother. He felt he didn't belong with Mrs. Darling because he wasn't with them when they agreed to take the other boys' in, so Tinkerbell uses her magic to convince the aunt to take him.

To tie in with the Narrater, there is a deleted scene that was included on the dvd at the end that showed adult Wendy telling the story to her daughter Jane. Peter shows up, and they have a heart to heart as Peter didn’t actually expect it to have been so long from when they last saw each other. It ends with Jane going to Neverland with Peter, and while I can see why they got rid of it for the sake of this ending - which tugged at my lil heart strings as a tiny child, I also think it would’ve completed some of that missing editing.
Regardless, as someone born in 2001 this is one of my favourite Peter Pan/modern telling of a fairytale in media from the last 30 years. The things that work, work so well that it’s easy to ignore the smaller, awkward moments. I definitely think of it as a unique masterpiece.

I feel like versions hop from childlike perspective (Disney) to an adult looking back (Hook) but this one lives in that liminal space teetering between being a child and grown up. @@jessicawurm23 That's because this Wendy actually is strong. That Wendy is only "talked about" as strong. It's the core tenant of filmmaking, show don't tell. Disney's live action remakes almost consistently break that cardinal rule. They talk for hours about how progressive the female lead is, but what do they really do differently from their supposedly weaker animated counterparts? Typically, nothing. If you take out the dialogue, their stories and actions play identically for the most part. Even when they try to do more, like in the Aladdin remake, the attempt gets cucked by the desire to still have the original film's structure and pacing. That film actually had kind of an interesting, genuinely stronger version of Jasmine for a second before it then went "Nevermind, she gets locked up anyways".
It's what I like to call the "Kairi Problem". Where the character talks and acts all spunky, but they're just a damsel at the end of the day. You don't get to say they're more progressive just because they have snarky dialogue now, they actually need to do something in the story to not be a damsel. But typically, Disney doesn't do that. They're the same damsels they always were, they just have snarky quips now. Ooh, what a difference...

Completely disagree; Peter Pan and Wendy portrayed the characters not only in writing but an acting way better. Waymore consistent for what it was, and not jumping all over the place not only and it’s editing that this piece of crap is. Hockey makes a lot more sense there, not to mention with his amazing backstory, and as pointed out here, the fact that he and George Darling are played by the same actor even if they do look Completely different that you don’t think they’re different people,They don’t add up and work with each other the way that they’re supposed to.

I honestly put this film along with "The Secret Garden" from 1993 as one of the best adaptation of a children book. It has so much layers to it and my favorite thing is how it treats Peter Pan has a tragic figure that is a victim of himself and who is doomed to be alone rather than a super hero. The ending is strangely bitter sweet, on one side you have all the joy of the lost boys finding parents and on the other hand you have Peter looking in with tears in his eyes and later we have him flying off with the adult Wendy voice over telling us that she never saw him again. I liked that it is not a super happy ending and it makes you think a bit. Also the score for the film is so good and those kids actors where talented. Watching the atrocious Disney plus film made me appreciate this one even more.

Peter Pan is a story that lives in the subtext, in the weird emotional undercurrents of the transition between childhood and sexual maturity. And that's what this version nails. 10/10. The Disney version is good, but it's more clearly just a children's story, an adventure. Lots of fun, but it misses a chunk of the strange mysticism and weird psychological and archetypal significance that runs through the story. This is one of the best adaptations of a book ever in that sense. It captures the essence of things that are hard to explain and signify. The Disney version is very 9 years old. This version is 12.
Also, for the record, hook is incredible. He also captures the subtext of the character in a way no one else has. Camille Paglia would love this movie.

Out of all the Peter Pan adaptations, this is the most definitive version. It reimagines the fairy tale and adds to the characters, while still remaining true to the original source material. This version of Wendy is definitely the best we've ever gotten, as the film strikes a balance between making her a b@d@ss and capable person but still feminine and motherly like she in the book. Even Peter Pan is given more weight and character beyond being a reckless boy who just wants to have fun. It's far better than the newest film Disney just did.

Easily the best Peter Pan adaptation ever made in my opinion. Peter Pan is a brat and childish, but very likeable and relatable. Captain Hook is scary, but also insanely hot. The kiss between Wendy and Peter is unbelievably cute due to Peter's reaction - and the ending when all the children get "adopted" and get a mother STILL makes me cry happy tears! And the music score? DAMN! It's a little... pervy... here and there, but given the ages and the themes of having to grow from a child to an adult (or in this case teenager) I think it's somewhat fitting cause it's never taken TOO far.

I feel like he missed the point of the kiss from Tiger Lily: it wasn't because she was in love; she was inspiring John. Immediately after, he turns bright red and acts with super-strength, empowered by the (ahem) inspiration. It also ties in with the "Mrs. Darling has a kiss in the corner of her mouth" bit, and foreshadows the power of a kiss given by a girl to a boy, which is more firmly demonstrated when Wendy gives the kiss she has to Peter in the fight with Hook.
Also, the fight with Hook has some excellent dialog. The use of the chant to defeat him, and his final acceptance of his demise by repeating it, is really effective.

I understand why that was cut since kids probably wouldn't have related to it but I found it well written and kind of wish it had made the final version.
This adaptation has some ridiculous additions, like Hook flying at the climax and Wendy and Peter being pitted against each other in a duel to the death (which even the movie seems to realize is ridiculous and abandons as soon as it brings it up) but it's got one of the best casts of any Peter Pan adaptation I've seen, and the script really does capture J. M. Barrie's sense of humor.

Fun fact: The "Flying" theme that James Newton Howard did for this movie was so good/magical that Disney Parks literally used the theme, music from a Universal movie who owns a rival theme park, for their Year of a Million Dreams (2006-2008) commercial (linked below with Flying scene). Irony at its finest and a testament to the score. The Flying scene itself is incredibly well done/acted/choreographed.
This movie is very well remembered by kids who grew up in the 2000s. James Newton Howard's soundtrack is incredible. It's a great film and is actually very deep and well acted. The movie really gets into the psychology of youth vs maturity embodied in Peter and Hook (there are some fantastic lines of dialogue about both throughout the movie). This version also really gets into the themes of first love and maturity in relation to being selfless with Peter and Wendy.
TLDR: It's a really magical movie with a great score and themes. Worth a watch!

A Trailer Fact: The various theatrical trailers for the movie contain many scenes not present in the final film, such as Wendy knocking down John's Napoleon puppet, Wendy asking Hook "Why do you hate him so?" with Hook retorting "Do you remember your mother?", sword fights and other Black Castle scenes viewed from different angles, and Peter flying closer to the window to pick up Wendy. There are also major differences in the colorization of many scenes, a shot of Hook confronting the fairy guide in the forest without the actual digital addition of this figure, and a computer-generated introduction to the Jolly Roger pirate ship stuck in the ice which was completely redone for the theatrical release. All of these give the distinct impression of trailer editors using early rushes or dailies while a lot of post-production work still had to be done.

Captain Hook is the first classic villain I remember sympathizing with as a child…I actually wanted him to win in the animated film, no joke! Thanks for reviewing this one! Still waiting for you to do Muppet Treasure Island…🙏🙏🙏

The croc in this is an interesting contrast to the Disney one. The latter is almost always comedic with only Hook being terrified of it. This one? This thing is fucking VICIOUS.

I watched this as a kid and Captain Hook was very terrifying. I need to rewatch this at some point because it always stuck with me despite only seeing it once or twice
