Rango is a 2011 American computer-animated Western comedy film directed by Gore Verbinski from a screenplay by John Logan. Co-produced by Verbinski with Graham King and John B. Carls, the film stars the voices of Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Stephen Root, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone, and Timothy Olyphant. The film's plot centers on Rango, a chameleon who accidentally ends up in the town of Dirt, an outpost that is in desperate need of a new sheriff. Rattlesnake Jake is one of the best designed villains I've ever seen.

@@GodOfOrphans If I'm not mistaken, He's based off of Angel Eyes, played by Lee Van Cleef from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Hence the mustache.

MPC is the vfx company. Anyway, since Disney owns Lucasfilm, I'm assuming they actually do control ILM now, no?
Also, The Lion King was exactly what it was supposed to be - an aesthetically naturalistic yet faithful as possible (by translation into photo-realism) interpretation of the beloved animated classic. None of the contradictory criticisms of it make any sense: "it's not as exaggerated in color and performance - but it's just the same exact thing!" - Duh, that's the entire gimmick, what if you could watch The Lion King but it looked like a National Geographic documentary set in the real African savanna? Favreau purposely only changed what would go too far in breaking the naturalism priority of its production.
And it's only the best cgi ever accomplished. But yeah, give the vfx Oscar to "1917" (which was MPC too).
I like that Zack Snyder owl movie from Animal Logic too!
But Weta wins with Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin".

@@Geronimo_Jehoshaphat lol the problem with the lion king remake is they went the national geographic route but then had the animals fucking talking anyway, which breaks the immersion of it being some natural documentary, but without the expressiveness of it NOT being one it just comes off as bland and flat and ridiculous
The moving “trees” are inspired by an actual cactus plant called “The Creeping Devil”. It grows above ground horizontally and while one end grows the other end dies. Giving the feel that it’s moving or “creeping”.
I think a lot of this movie is a love letter to desert creatures, landscapes and Old Westerns. Hard to miss all the attention to detail every character design gets. Warms my heart honestly. ✨

I never knew that but they are pretty neat looking. I personally love how the armadillo is a reference to Don Quixote in design. Another person who's own delusions get him into danger but he is still a hero because he is often the only one willing to help.
Why didn't the movie feature those then and instead turned them into yuccas?

When I went to see this movie there was only one other person in the theatre and this guy was a friggin' cowboy western encyclopedia. He could recite every director/actor a studio used along with tons of neat trivia. He talked non-stop for about twenty minutes before the film began and I admit he put me in the mood for a western. Because of him, I ended up liking Rango way more than I should have.
You just took up conversation with another lone stranger in a theater?
Those oddballs are always the best.

Others have already done a good job defending other aspects of the movie, so I'm just here demanding justice for my boy Rattlesnake Jake. Calling him bland is selling him way short. Yeah, he's not a very deep or interesting character, but a lot of great villains aren't. They're instead powered by sheer spectacle. And in that regard... It's a damn snake desperado with a gatling gun for a rattle. That's already badass. On top of that there's his performance, how he unapologetically revels in being pure evil rather than even pretending to have a grander motive, his shockingly high onscreen killcount, and the fact that he never actually gets defeated.
In fact, calling the finale an anticlimax I also find unfair. It's not a big battle or anything, but we already had that in an earlier scene. And I think it's a perfectly fitting end for the mayor to pay the price for double-crossing one too many underlings, thinking himself untouchable. It's also kind of chilling the more you think about it, both the implications of what exactly is going to happen to him and also remembering that Jake is still out there by the end of the movie. He wasn't redeemed or anything, he's still wreaking havoc somewhere. Most movies would work around that by having the secondary antagonist sacrifice themselves to defeat the primary one, because bad people should always get their comeuppance in movies just like how it is in real life (right?). This one dared to defy that silly standard and basically gave their most irredeemable character a happy ending. He makes it out alive, his enemy the bird is still dead, and he got revenge on someone who wronged him. Not a bad deal.
I put him in the same category as Thrax from Osmosis Jones, another villain I remember NC snubbing. Paper-thin storywise, but the cool-factor is too high to ignore.
Let's call it "The cool cardboard cut out" villian.

You could say some of the biggest villians in Cinema are a "COOL CARDBOARD CUT OUT"
Cause it's not about their depth as a charater, but their actions and looks.
Darth Vader started as it. Till the second movie. Like can we really call Darth Vader in A new hope really a deep antagonistic charater?
I totally agree. The voice actor for the snake is such a class act and he just oozes charisma the way he delivers his lines. Personally, I’m sick of critics hating on good movies, I just stick to watching what I love and ignoring mouthy people on UA-cam.
sounds interesting, makes you like to see another instalment where the protagonists have to deal with the consequences of letting him go but you also feel you may risk losing that ending.
I also loved Rattle Snake Jake. That Gatling gun rattle is just intimidating as hell. He's dangerous and he knows it. It's kind of chilling.
Both are elevated by their voice actors more than anything.

I LOVE that line, it feels straight out of a classic western movie and works so well.

Fun fact: When my boyfriend and I went to see this movie, at the end, we saw a woman who worked for Nickelodeon and had been polling audiences on the film. Turns out a lot of parents were NOT happy with this film.
Personally, I loved it. Thought we were walking into the standard "goofy animal Western parody" by Nickelodeon, but it was played straight and serious and I loved that the humor was surprisingly dark and inappropriate at times for a "Children's" film.

@@SwiftNimblefoot Oh it definitely was not, but it was one of those examples of "Never Trust a Trailer" and it didn't help that it was produced by Nickelodeon. Like I said, a lot of parents were NOT happy with this film because the trailers made it look like a goofy animal movie with a Western setting. Once the toad shouted "You son of a _!" only to get cut off by the hawk's screech, I knew we were getting a different type of movie entirely.

To add something I'm familiar with, their "emotion capture" acting with the actors actually performing the scenes can be very helpful to voice actors because it actually adds an extra layer to your acting because you're physically moving along with the character so you get a more accurate performance. Many voice actors actually do this on a small scale, if you see them in a recording booth they do a lot of emoting with their face and body even though obviously the audience will never see it
It's always nice to see it in action in the DVD featurettes. It shows you how much effort they put into their acting
Benedict Cucumberpatch really made Smaug come alive with his motion(& emotion) capture for The Hobbit. He’s talked about how much easier it was to get into character that way.
I honestly wish there was more animated "kids" films like this now a days, at least weird ones like this.
What, like a Rango Cinematic Universe? That could be cool if well done like this movie was.
Rattlesnake Jake had some serious badass lines that I love to death.

I agree. Jake's dialogue is possibly the most memorable in the movie, and while part of that is the voice, another is that you don't necessarily expect an intimidating western villain to be clever. In some movies a character that intimidating might not talk at all. But Jake is good at turning a phrase and so it's a part of his repertoire. He's able to be charismatic and sometimes even funny despite being consistently terrifying.
The one problem I have with him is that he's so much bigger than everyone else there that it's hard to buy that one bullet from guns of their size would take him out.
@@thomascircle245 I never thought of that point about their guns being to small to kill rattlesnake Jake before, and while I think you have a point, I think that is a nitpick, much like a lot of the nostalgia critic's review of Rango.

Rattlesnake Jake is one of my all-time favorite animated villains. So much of his intimidation factor comes from how he's talked about by the townspeople. He's built up as this phantom being while never actually SEEN on screen until the third act, and I felt like he really lived up to his reputation as a ruthless and yet honor-bound, cold-blooded (literally) outlaw.
Yeah, that's my favorite part about him too. We don't actually see him until the third act, but we've already heard so much about him that we're anticipating his grand entrance--and it's epic as hell. His design is fantastic too.
@@glowworm2 ooo I forgot to mention his design is so clever. The machine gun tail, those hellish eyes, and that tiny little mustache - he's just a spectacle. And Bill Nighe (whose name I'm sure I've butchered but I ain't looking it up right now, I'm a lazy clod) gives such a deliciously sinister performance as Jake's voice.

I loved the rough look the characters had. They had dirty clothes, uncomb hair, scars and some had missing body parts. I wish this team could work on a Oddworld movie.
Now i feel an urge to boot up Oddworld; Stranger's wrath

Animation is incredible, humor makes me laugh out loud on multiple occasions, the idea that the main character is nameless at the beginning and begins to choose and own the name he gave himself later really makes this a gem of a movie. The liar reveal even wasn't that bad considering there isn't a scene where the characters waste time by ignoring what he did for the town and disregard what he meant to everyone like other movies do.

Especially the humor, I remember many adults in my theatre chuckling at the jokes about the doll, enlarged prostate, and thespians.
I thought they were funny too, but also because I was like "whoa how'd they get away with that?"
I agree, especially the point about the liar reveal. When Rango comes back, the townspeople are glad to see him. No one bats an eye that he lied about anything.
His need wasn't to be himself, it was to be a hero for the townspeople.
I have to admit that I don't think this movie even counts as a "liar revealed."

This movie is gorgeous and hilarious. Especially the part where the hawk was trying to kill him in the dessert. The bird was just so realistic. Like how it lifted up the bottle so he could drop it and break it. Not only so he can kill the prey, but also so that he'd be able to smash the bottle open and eat the prey. It was just so real, I almost felt like I was about to get killed. Sorry, I just really love birds.

Rango is literally my main favorite movie... EVER! The animation is absolutely gorgeous, the characters are interesting, and the voice acting is perfect. I could literally watch it every day for the rest of my life and not get bored from it. Not over-exaggerating either, I basically grew up with this movie. Rango totally deserved to earn more money in the box office, but the several awards it won was enough to make up for that. ❤️
Glad to see another person who loves this movie even more than I do. I don’t understand what the Critic was thinking this time.
22:22 To be fair to the gag about the owls claiming that Rango was going to die, I think the intent from the start was for it to be just that: a running gag. I distinctly remember it getting to the point that, during the film, the other owls in the band start questioning the lead owl about when or even if Rango will actually die.
Fun fact: The video game based on the movie is actually a continuation of the story after the end.
You even get to fight and kill Rattle Snake Jake, fight aliens, golf with zombies, and even get sucked into an abandoned arcade machine and play through a digital level.
It actually looked good too. Look up the trailer for it.
I got that game when I was little and it satisfied my want for a Rango sequel it is actually super fun.

I got the game on the Wii when I was little. I was super bad at it and ended up getting to the alien level before I gave up because I couldn’t figure it out. The solution was probably extremely simple tho haha
This was one of those movies that didn’t feel real but you know it is because you’ve seen it and it confuses you slightly
It has a very odd effect on me where I always have this movie on my mind and remember bits and pieces of it but I always forget it’s name until I see a poster or a video about it

Things I remember from this movie:
The animation. Those textures, man. I don't know if, in the 10 years since, I've seen anything that compares. I've seen animated dust, but not often have I seen animated things that look dusty.
The crow. In particular, I remember during the climactic standoff when he tries to sneak up behind Rattlesnake Jake, who hears him cock his gun and wings him in the shoulder. He falls wounded and just deadpans, "That was a _bad_ idea." For the most part, he was the stereotypical wise, stoic American Indian, so it was a welcome break from the trope to show him actually try something and fail rather than just be magically, mysteriously flawless.
The mole family's spooky chant as they rose from the ground. Seriously, did they practice that after dinner every evening or something?
How Rango, when exposed, wanders back to the remnants of his old terrarium. Nothing special about the idea, but the strangeness and pathetic meaninglessness of his old toys made the emotions of that scene hit harder for me.
The strange, deific cowboy, and how he turns out to be this odd scavenger with a golf cart... who can apparently talk to chameleons. I know it was supposed to be surreal and ambiguous, but that confusion especially stuck with me.
Honestly with a look this weird you kinda need to have some grounded tropes to offset the surealisem. I dont think this would work if the majority of the movie was sureal feverdream. I personally love this movie and the clichees dont bother me at all cause everything else is so damm charming.

I admit, despite some of the cliches mentioned, I do enjoy this movie a lot. I think the biggest draws for me was for one, the fact that it's a PG kids film that really got away with a lot of good adult jokes and thus has a bit of an edge to it. The other draw being that it's visual style and animation is freakin' phenomenal. Whoever animated Rattlesnake Jake deserves SO MUCH credit in my opinion!
I also love this movie, but (mostly) because of the clichés. The way I see this movie, seeing these characters being so bland and predictable when a lot of surreal things happen to or around them, not to mention their gross-looking appearance, makes the whole thing even MORE surreal, kinda like a fever dream.

I gotta disagree on that. It would have gone against one of the core themes of the movie. One of the reasons it was so important in this movie wasn't just that he grew to like his new identity and new life. But both of those were based on lies. He hadn't just lied to the townspeople, he had also been lying to himself.

You and I feel the complete opposite about the long walk through the desert scene. It gives me chills when I watch it. That first step out into the road is more than just moping. It's him coming to accept the horrors he's brought upon that town and how he feels the only redemption is to kill himself.
The other thing that sets it apart is he doesn't go back and ask for forgiveness. He goes back because its what little he can do to help
This is one of my favourite animated movies for many reasons. I'm gutted that this didn't make the money it deserved. We should've had animated films like this more often
It's a totally out of a Terry Gilliam movie moment, or David Lynch. I love it. So emotional. And indeed Rango basically takes that step down the road, faces his fears and comes out a braver man on the other side.
This review honestly angered me the way most people were angered by the Wall review. It's a masterpiece of a movie and he ripped it apart while trying to act like he enjoyed it.
Can we just talk about the score a bit more. Its incredible. "we, ride really" in particular is just art.
And the Medley between Ride of the Valkyries, Rango's Theme, Bats and The Blue Danube.

The animation was definitely ahead of it's time
I saw this film only once when it came out and the only thing I remember is the campfire scene where one of the characters says.
“I found a human spinal chord in my fecal matter once.”
“You might wanna get that looked at.”
That line still sticks with me 11 years later.

I like the gag where the hillbilly gophers have a whole jug band playing "Ride of the Valkyries" while riding on bats with gatling guns.
Honestly, I think the whole Emotion Capture was more about getting a better voice rather than the movement. Any actor can tell you that stage/film acting is not the same as voice acting, in terms of method, and it can be hard for some people to transition between the two. So, simulating a stage setup can make it easier for everybody to emote properly.
Agree and tho I’m not a voice acted I do like to do a lot of voices of different ppl and I like to move when I do it like if I’m doing a Star Wars one then yea I move my hands or arms or legs u get the point but it feels so much better

Personally, the thing I enjoy most about Rango is the meta narrative. It's like a dissection of the hero's journey.
The protagonist starts out as just that: the protagonist. There is nothing special or noteworthy about him to make him the protagonist, he just is. He feels like he has no place in the world, so he creates the Rango persona and, in doing so, creates a purpose for himself. In the end, it all falls apart because he can't live up to his own legend. So when his lies finally catch up to him, he once again finds himself lost and without purpose, but it forces him to self-reflect and leaves him with a new insight: "It's not about you. It's about them." And so he goes back and embraces the Rango persona again -- not for his own sake, but for theirs -- and that's what allows him to become an actual hero.
That's not a dissection of the hero's journey. That's just the hero's journey.

It may suprise you Doug, but these plants actually exist.
I'm not shitting on you, there are actually "walking" trees, searching in the desert for water in America.
They are just much slower than shown in the movie.
There’s those who call this movie an underrated masterpiece and I’m inclined to agree. At the very least it’s the finest “liar revealed” story I’ve seen. It’s not like Rango’s sulking isn’t unfounded. He lied to an entire town and told them he could protect them when he didn’t even know who he was at the time beyond an actor finding their role. The town doesn’t really seem to take him back fully until he proves himself and saves them like a real sheriff should. Also Rattlesnake Jake’s dull? I think not. I’ll admit he’s not a complex villain, what you see is what you get with him but other qualities more than make up for it. Not only is his design seriously badass(I mean how often do you see a gunslinger rattlesnake with a Gatling gun for the rattle?) but with how he’s the one to expose Rango for lying, it’s like Jake’s a symbol of how brutal the Wild West could really be. Plus his performance. It’s like he’s fully aware of what a cliched villain he is and he decided to just have fun with it to the point that he still comes off as threatening.
Him sulkint scene was much better than many realise in my opinion. It is literally a guy going to kill himself and it ends with a talk with spirit of a west that looks like a movie legend while Rango abandons his ego.

As he pointed out, sometimes liar revealed stories can be good. And it was the backbone of this movie, and done really well. But I suppose the critic just hates the trope too much.

@@calvinjohnson6242 I often take NC’s opinions with a grain of salt like I enjoy some of his reviews but others he absolutely rails against them for like seemingly no reason which hey that’s his prerogative but it just makes him seem less credible as a critic
This was one of the most ahead-of-its-time Western movies for many because it tackled self-discovery instead of the redemption arc, like what most Western protagonists did! My favorite detail was the asymmetry angle! While most animation looks squeaky clean and perfect, this one felt dusty, dry and crooked, helping it stand out much more!
This movie I personally feel is an underrated masterpiece and deserved the Oscar award.
Edit: looking back, I will have to be honest that personally, I would have wanted Arthur Christmas or Kung Fu Panda 2 to win. However, I stick to my decision and feel that Rango got it fair and square.

I saw Rango back when I was a teenager and was working on the first drafts of a script for a movie me and my brother were working on as a project. and we were suffering from the problem of the lead character being extremely bland and boring stereotypes and I thought it was a very interesting idea to just embrace the fact that the lead character had no identity and have him gain an identity throughout the course of the story. Unfortunately due to the fact I was still in an experienced writer I was unable to do this for my own story. But now many years later, having gotten much better, hopefully someday I'll get a chance to try again.

The character designs are just amazing, every character on screen is dripping with character and unique features. You seen sing? With the copy paste characters? Sing = boring
This makes each person so unique it’s amazing in this movie
And looking back, I appreciated how they got in so much adult humor (the scenes that stood out was the doll bit, and the prostate exam joke) albeit utilized it pretty cleverly for the most part.

one thing i vivdly remember about this film is how u can just FEEL how dry, dusty and hot the setting was. when rango drank the water it looked SO refreshing. im glad my mom rented this movie for me and my sister right after it came out. such a weird, unforgettable film. now that im older i really love Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the mini cameo in the beginning was perfect.
i remember in elementary we took a class vote on a movie to watch and rango won. we only got halfway through the film and the teacher never let us finish it, i was super disappointed! as were my classmates. we never really got an answer as to why.

What I love about this movie is how intentionally ugly everything looks. I don’t mean in the movements or anything, I mean in terms of the textures and character designs. Apparently this was intentional, and every character and generally everything in the desert was purposefully designed to look this way. It was designed to make you fell thirsty just watching it, and it that regard I think it succeeded. Overall, still a fantastic movie

Despite the liar cliche, there's still many clever jokes, movie references, &of course Johnny Depp being the best really makes the movie hold well for me & my family, esp with us loving westerns. And also Rattlesnake Jake is DAMN AWESOME.

Dude just because a movie has a cliche doesn’t lower the quality or viewing experience as long as it doesn’t come out of nowhere and fits well with the narrative as well as the characters’ goals.
When the liar reveal kicks in, instead of being angry d$&@ heads for no reason other than the fact that he lied to them. The people of dirt are confused, they need time to process this after all the work that “Rango” did for them. This plays into the main theme of the movie which is self-identity.
The main chameleon is also acting in character. Remember, he is an actor who has played in very cliche stories so when he leaves the town, he believes that the people are mad at him for lying because he believes he is a character in a story and this is basically the “third act breakup” part which he can’t break out of. Then later when he meets the Spirit of the West and learns that he has to be himself and not some western cowboy does he realize that the people of dirt need him and that they are much more complex than what those stories told him when if you lie, the people will automatically kick you out of their gang.
If you don’t think the final showdown is epic, watch “Rango: The Chain”.
Holy SHIT does it make you see the beauty in this scene. If you don’t already.

3:36 Ironically, one could say Over the Hedge is a good example of liar revealed. why? because it immediately goes from that to actual betrayal, and when the protagonist (RJ) goes to try to make up for the betrayal soon after, the one who hated him the most at first (Verne) is the one defending him now and for how easy they forgive RJ once Verne convinced the rest with something so mundane

I actually think is an underrated masterpiece. It deserves a ton of apreciation for the way it handles its elements and ideas.
There's a lot more to discuss but in short I feel like you missed the point to some things, it's less about liar revealed and more an exploration of identity and finding it, the "5 minutes of sulking" is the most beautifully designed and heart wrenching part of the movie, he legit basically does identity suicide and his feelings of being lost with his life and who he is, is one of the most relatable things. With the side characters though I can see how at times you might think they're bland, it's their shared amount of random awkward quips here and there of awkward or dark humour that really creates an amazing atmosphere, and lastly I can't believe you glossed over how amazing the flight of the Valkyries scene truly is and with the whole "emotion capture" I think you're missing the point of that a little bit, it's less about capturing movement for the animators and more about creating a connection between the characters with the actors living the scene a bit
I personally found that the more experimental and odd stuff to be in the movie a perfect amount and in the correct places since the odd stuff was connected directly to dreams and death, I think if they went any further or put it anywhere else it would've cheapened the experience. Also the movie was a pretty good subversive take on Westerns since typical westerns focus on redemption as their main theme while Rango's is a focus on identity (yes it does have a redemption arc with him returning to the town, but that's not the important part, the important part and the part focused on is why). Granted, I've been a big fan of Westerns for a good majority of my life and when I saw this when it came out I thought it was clever how it took the tropes of the Western and subverted the themes that westerns typically use

The "trees" were mentioned previously in the movie when Rango asks beans if she ever feels like their alive. She responds by talking about how there was a legend where its said they move towards the closet body of water, and how she would watch them all night to see if they would move, but they never did. Them moving here is what was actually supposed to blur the lines between reality and fantasy, not the dumb explanation you came up with.
Yeah, once he starts to review/talk about good movies, there's no doubt he's full of bird droppings. He doesn't even know what cel shading is!

Maybe because I wasn’t “expecting more”, I particularly love this movie. I think it hits all the right notes and uses it’s tropes well. I think nowadays, with Westerns being rare, leaning in on the cliches works really well. Since they’re uncommon, fans tune in to see how well the tropes and Easter eggs are implemented, rather than looking for “something new.”
If a genre is over saturating the market, then yeah, people get bored and want fresh takes. But when something is uncommon, yet has a well known style, people tend to want to see more of that established style. They want the familiar. Done well, of course.
I always liked that they went with pygmy owls for the mariachis. It’s a very southwestern animal that you don’t see too often (really, ever) in pop culture. I live in Yuma, Arizona, and have encountered them a few times. One kind of stalked me once.

Watching this completely alone in the theater on a rainy day was a both memorable and surreal experience.

The RomComs all being "The Liar Revealed" is the most accurate thing ever.
That was the only thing I didn’t like in this film was it used that cliche.
Granted looking back, I was quite surprised by how much adult humor they got away with in a PG film branded under Nickelodeon.

Rango - what happens when you take a nerd's passion, an amazing western narrative and animation buffs and put it all in a blender.
The end result was (in my opinion) the best western ever made. With cowboys and aliens, Shanghai noon, blazing saddles and Shanghai knights coming behind it in the top 5 in my opinion
Very few westerns have captured my attention, western cartoons in recent time have done the same: cliffside and long gone gulch but those arent movies.
Behind the top 5 we also have puss in boots and the mexico trilogy.
Oh and one western game that caught my attention and interest since I grew up playing it: red dead revolver.
You didn't mention the most badass moment in the movie, when Rango returns to the town to beat Jake and has 1 bullet, Jake claims he hasn't got the nerve to kill him, but Rango just replies "Try me"

Enforced Method Acting: Before the animation process began, Gore Verbritski filmed a live-action version of the film on a sound stage with very basic sets and props. The actors' lines were captured with boom mics and both their physical performances and the camera blocking were heavily referenced for the animation.

Man, Doug did this film so dirty. So much was left untalked about... Rango's identity crisis, Beans motivations, The mystery of where the water went, The commentary on societal needs, meaning of religion and corruption, and basically EVERYTHING having to do with Rattlesnake Jake was basically left as a footnote. All because he couldn't get over the liar revealed thing. Which by the way, the only reason it sucks is because in most movies, it's the ONLY plot going on. Rango has so many more layers that Doug flat out ignored. Very bad review, Doug.
I think this is a film that makes good use of the liar revealed trope because it’s the villain who lies and the other characters were upset, but they didn’t want him to leave
The thing about Liar Revealed plots isn't the shock or the twist.
It's the suspense of when and how the reveal happens. The bomb under Hitchcock's table.
The problem is that most stories tend to recycle the same reveal (liar lies, does good, gets revealed, everybody mopes, liar saves day, all forgiven).
This movie did do it a bit better, imo, because the Chameleon's moping is entirely justified because he'd based his whole identity around this one lie. Which makes his encounter with the Spirit of the West and genuinely good epiphany that much more impactful!
And most of the time, it's the villain or another antagonistic jerk who spills the beans in the third act, mostly as a means to demoralize the Town.
Also, what hurts me the most about the Liar Revealed is when the Townspeople tries to get back to the norm after the truth comes out, as if what they were doing b4 could POSSIBLY make up for lost time (e.g. A Bug's Life)

IMOn the best (least bad?) Liar Revealed is Disney's Aladdin 1992. Jasmine sees through the first facade, only for Al to double down on ANOTHER lie. The 3rd act mope isn't because he's not a prince, since Jafar is a *much* bigger threat! The drama comes from Al breaking his promise to Genie in order to keep the illusion.
Aladdin's lie is barely an afterthought during the climax!
Say what you will about Rango, this film contains, in my opinion at least, one of the BEST scenes I have ever witnessed in a movie. Everything in the scene is just fucking spectacular. Lemme just get a bit over the top and try to give this sequence what it deserves:
The gang's plan against Rattlesnake Jake has been initiated, but gone arwy. Jake noticed the flaws and fired wildly into the air until he hears the "click" of his gatling gun tail, dispersing their trickery. He hasn't won though, as he quickly turns to see a revolver pointing directly at his face:
Staring Jake dead in the eyes, Rango cocks his revolver and declares
>"It only takes one bullet."
Jake's shock fades as he realises who's holding the gun and he glares at him with taunting anger, hissing
>"You ain't got the nerve."
Rango, his eyes still locked with Jakes, unflinchingly utters
>"Try me."
Jakes eyes widen, his face dropping it's typical sauve grimace and his body language changing entirely. The only reason Rango does not shoot him is because the Mayor emerges from the bank with a gun to Beans' head. Despite this distracting Rango, Jake does not strike. Instead, he lowers himself and backs slightly away, his eyes still locked on the barrel of that revolver. He's backing down. Not because he fears the gun, but because he fears the hand that holds it. Even as Rango lowers and unloads that revolver, effectively disarming himself entirely, Jake's eyes still follow the gun. Even as Rango turns his back and walks towards the bank, Jakes eyes remain locked, eventually jumping to his back, his look telling many emotions but screaming one: Realisation. Realisation that Rango is no longer the man he openly threatened, mocked, and humilated out of town. Realisation that Rango isn't scared of him anymore. Realisation that he just witnessed an act of another western slinger. Even as Rango and his love interest are locked into the banks safe, Jake does not look on in triumph, but what is more akin to remourse.
Rattlesnake Jake's last words to Rango tell it all:
>"I tip my hat to you, sir. One legend to another."
Fucking shivers, man. I fucking love that scene so much and no one can convince me otherwise.

Seeing as how I was a kid when this film came out, the "liar revealed" trope wasn't as pounded into me as it was for you, so it didn't really bother me with Rango. Plus, the tortoise talking about the economics of controlling water kinda made the film a bit more adult for me, and unlike Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, Rango actually had amazing visuals, comedy, and action set pieces to counterbalance the economic talk.
Also, I kinda get why they had the actors in costumes and sorta act the film out. Yes, the characters are animals, and the animation ultimately takes over, but it still gives the actors a basic context of what this scene is like and gives the animators a basic idea of how the characters are supposed to move to make the performances even MORE lively without the need to build up the performances from scratch. Think of the "emotion capture" as live-action storyboards that also serve to give the actors more performance context.
I’m going to defend Rango’s character for a bit
Rangos blandness is to show that he has no character, since the whole theme of the film is about identity, which is most likely the reason why he’s a chameleon, since they easily blend to their surroundings and he’s trying to blend in.
This is until he makes up the identity Rango, someone who isn’t him.
We see him live out a story that isn’t his until it’s revealed to the town that he’s been living out a lie
This leads the liar revealed scene and while it does drag in some parts, it does have some importance to the story when he’s at the highway, showing us where he started and him crossing the road is showing us that he’s walking to the other side.
We then see the Spirit of the West, based of off Clint Eastwood who is famous for playing characters with no identity (hence the nickname Man With No Name), who tells him that his story, his identity, is what he does for others and not what he’s been doing for him.
We then see Rango fully embrace this and stand up to Jake, and save the town.
Someone else by the name of Willcraft made a really good defense on Jake’s character
Also criticizing Rango for being bland is also criticizing every spaghetti western
The thing that confirmed this review is garbage for me is his criticism of the "I'm Nobody" scene. One of the darkest, most somber scenes I've ever seen in a film supposedly aimed at kids.
RANGO is the best animated western movie I had ever watched from Nickelodeon. I remember back in 2011 watching this movie at the theater that I got the game afterwards. It was my childhood memory.

I liked “Rango” himself sorta “becomming the character” , so to speak,and actually turning out as a hero at the end, after spending half the movie not knowing who he himself “really” was. And Inliked Rattle Snake Jake, if not for personality, then for sheer spectacle, and for his sort of commitment to being a “legend” of the west.

Actually Doug, they DO explain the trees. Miss Beans tells Rango that they are called the "Walking Cactus". Beans said that they SUPPOSEDLY walk at night to find water. when she was a little girl, she would watch them to see if they would actually move but they won't. This is all explained when Rango kisses beans during her "fake freeze"
However, they don't really explain how those cactuses actually walk.

What I loved about his first scene with Rango was that he knew Rango was a fraud, so instead of attacking him physically, he shamed him to leave. Wasn’t gonna waste any bullets on a nobody; badass!

It was great to have Bill Nighy and Johnny Depp doing this movie! When I first heard Rattlesnake Jake’s voice for the first time as a 15 year-old watching this back in 2011, I immediately said, “Is that Davy Jones voice actor?” and it was!
What I like about Rattlesnake Jake is that he’s played by the same actor that played Davy Jones from pirates of the Caribbean
Bill Nighy is known about a lot more than that role. But well, it's directed by Verbinski, there is a reason so many Pirates actors were on this.

I will never not love this movie. It was such a big part of my childhood and some of my best memories include watching this over and over with my dad
I, for one, can’t help but love every millisecond of Rango, which is how I’ve felt since I first saw it back in the early 2010s (though I don’t know the exact year I first watched the movie). Every frame of animation, every character, every performance, every plot beat, every Johnny Depp one-liner, EVERYTHING. Despite relying on some cliches to tell a compelling and engaging story (some that I really hate, like the big breakup of all the characters right before the film’s third act), it’s still one hell of an engaging story in my eyes, and one of the best examples of how to properly use story cliches in one’s own story. There isn’t a single moment I dislike or full heartedly hate in Rango, not a single thing that takes me out of the town of Dirt once I’m thrown right in, and that’s something I have to give major props to at the end of the day. I, for one, think Rango is an absolute masterpiece

I actually just got in to this movie last year and I thought it was really good and as a reptile lover it’s always nice to appreciate that there are reptile-based movies out there and one of the best things about this movie is the animation Johnny Depp and the villain Rattlesnake Jake was just awesome

It took me far too many years to realize the "ingenuity" joke. Injun-uity
