Quite spot on man. I even agree about Dragon's Crown, but I'm not a beat 'em up enjoyer at all, so that was expected. (Haven't played 13 Sentinels). The music in the UO demo might be what sold me on the game at launch. Sadly I got burnt out before the end. That's probably on me for playing the game too much and trying to do all the side content, but I didn't run into that issue with Triangle Strategy. I have to say, I got a little bored of the pure "weakness exploiting" gameplay, as it felt like the game was designed for you to optimize the fun out of it. When you have unit types that completely negate other unit types, combat starts to feel like where you're just putting the square shape into the square hole to win. Even if you have to effectively program your units' behavior so that they attack the right targets in the right order, and min-max their stats so they have enough initiative and red/blue action points to do what they gotta do, the problem is that the outcome of every fight ends up being far too pre-determined, simple and predictable. Once your teams become optimal, it feels like the game just plays itself and you're lucky if something ever challenges that. Because of this, I had more fun watching fights play out in Ogre Battle 64, even though all you could really do was choose "focus lowest HP, focus highest HP, or focus leader" and try to manage your alignment. The plot in OB64 also kept me more engaged throughout, though UO has likeable characters. Despite its flaws (imo), UO is still one of the better games that came out this year and it definitely scratched that Ogre Battle itch. Thanks for the video!

This game is such a masterpiece! One of my favourite games of all time. Praying and hoping we get a good quality remaster or remake one of these days. Truly unique and special games like this don't deserve to rot away on old hardware!

Anyone watching this after playing Unicorn Overlord? It’s kinda crazy how 1 to 1 the gameplay is. Even things like the menus and to some extent the UI. Really cool that we basically got a modern Ogre Battle game.

Just found this great video today. I know a whole bunch of interesting stuff about this game (I wrote the script for the ten tips video you linked, so thanks for that) but it never even occurred to me to check what Ashley's name meant. I mean it's such a strangely mundane name that the thought never crossed my mind that there would be more to it. I thought myself clever when I realised that all the weapons found in chests were named after cocktails but Ash Tree Meadow may just be the most apt name meaning in any game... So which of Lea Monde's vintages do you imagine the commemorative wine most closely resembles? - Audentia - A Leá Monde quality sweet wine allowed to age to perfection. (HP+) Prudens - The most elegant red wine, with a gentle flavour and bouquet. (Int+) Valens - A Leá Monde red wine with a delicate, yet robust flavour. Vagrant Story is probably "the thing" for me.That one work of art that i'm most passionate about,one that i can talk or think about it hours upon hours,one that i can play again and again for years and not get tired of in the slighest.It's such an interesting,ambitious,unique game that never truly received the acclaim it deserved.Even some people who praise it only likes it due to it's fancy graphics and cutscene direction and says stuff like "Oh i love this game,but i wish it would remade as a soulslike,then it would be perfect!". Most people can't see anything of worth on it's gameplay due to it's "clunk" or "slow pace".And this honestly really frustruates me.If you removed every single mechanic except for the chaning system,i'm sure it would got way more recognition and probably would be rereleased already.But Matsuno and his team decided to something way more bold,different and bound to be a cult classic.I really,really respect and love his works for this.Great video btw,just wanted to spit out a few thoughts i have about the game lol

Nice video! People don't believe me, or think I'm crazy, when they ask about favorite games of all time and I bring up Vagrant Story. I feel it has aged like fine Lea Monde wine. Originally, I didn't like the fact that the "Risk" system kind of punished you for aggressive tactics, but now I see that as a feature, not a bug. I also don't know what to think about the ending which implied that Ashley actually had a family after all (which is impossible given the events of the game, but not everyone agrees with me on that). But, maybe knowing/facing up to the truth is not a prerequisite for being the right person to bear the Rood Inverse.

This game has a bit of a cult following, weapon forging system was totally new to me in 98 and I had played tactics... I think its a cool game.

I was introduced long ago to The Residents through the Freak Show game. If I had known this existed I would be even more a fan! I played through this a few years ago and it’s awesome!

I still own this for my PS1. I think I played it for about 20 minutes or so before putting it back on my shelf and not touching it again. I'll get around to finishing it one day I'm sure...

Ashley or Ashe is a boys name, it seems in America is used as a girls name however. Sidney ( sometimes abbreviated to Sid ) is also a boys name, if you look up "Sidney (given name)" on wikipedia you will find a lot of examples, even American ones, there is also the Sydney spelling, which some American women use, but also American men have it as well.

On emulators you can set the loading times to be "instant" which would mitigate the issue.

Here is some fun facts about Vagrant Story and the mysterious city where it takes place : The city was heavily inspired by the french village of Saint Emilion where the wine "Saint Emilion" is produced. This is an old and beautiful village with a strong medieval vibe surounded by vineyards. Square Soft was in Business with Kalisto, a french video game studio in Bordeaux to fund and edit Dark Earth 2 (official name : Silent Chaos). This game had character design done by Nomura, and during the developpement, Square Soft sent some important people to visit Kalisto, and Kalisto showed them around (like visiting Saint Emilion). One of Kalisto's game designer was japanese (Patrick Chen) which was very helpful as you can imagine. One day, Patrick told me when they visited a cave at Saint Emilion with Square, that one of them (i don't remember the name) said "now i know how it feels to be lost in a maze". So, if you were wondering what could be the connection between Vagrant Story and it's caves and wine, it's because of the impact that Saint Emilion left on them. Check some pictures of saint émilion on google and you will see for yourself.

You are so underrated man. I feel like I got to experience and appreciate Vagrant Story in its entirety through this video. You had my full undivided attention from start to finish. Also your sense of humor and delivery gets genuine laughs out of me several times each video. I love that you go in-depth for each category yet it never feels drawn out, because you focus on the meaningful stuff. Your channel has such a unique and specific vibe, you might be one of my favorite creators for that. Also don't listen to that other guy saying no one cares; this era of games is my favorite and I very recently discovered one of my favorite series ever (Koudelka / Shadow Hearts) thanks to a random youtube video after I searched "PS1". Even if it's a niche subject, your love for a piece of art will be contagious to at least one person. I look forward to the next upload! :)

After this and your Ogre Battle video, I reckon you should try Unicorn Overlord. The name sucks, but the game might be right up your alley.

I def prefer the SNES Ogre Battle to 64. It's a little less complex in some areas, but it operates smoother and chasing down units is less of a painful process. Everything feels sluggish in comparison to me on 64. Still love it though

I am hoping with the success of Unicorn Overlord, that we finally get a true sequel to this game and there were so many differences and features of this game that weren’t in UO, as well as a depth of Ogre Battle 64, that I am hoping we get it!

My mom picked this game up for us on PC like 20+ years ago for $1 at Gordmans. She had no idea the terrible context that lied within this hellish bit of data. I will forever be haunted by this game, its premise and its characters.

I think the term mirrored is wrong here and a little pretentious. In the tv show and film, it mirrors itself many times. Alan Wake just references Twin Peaks and takes some of its ideas. It reminds me of the character of Charlie from The Return

There was someone on discord who spent hours getting 100 on all chaos frames but i think he gave up midway. Sadly Denam doesn't make out with Lanselot if you reach 100 with Lodis. (Btw You can easily reach 100 Walister with certain choices. You start chapter 4 chaos with 70 walister. Letting your soldiers commit war crimes in Heim gives +15. Rejecting Apocrphya search is +10 and rejecting pirate treasure was +5 i Believe. However even with 100 you can get assassinated by a Walister loyal in the ending. So much for 100% love)

I was so happy with my experience with Tactics Ogre Reborn! I really hope this game did well enough for square to reconsider bringing this series back from the dead.

This game desperately needs a modern HD remaster. It's one of only 2 great N64 RPGs, while also being the best of the 2 (imo). It's got a unique battle system that plays out mostly by itself, as classes/preparation/strategy beforehand matter most. The in game choices, differing paths to recruit new characters & multiple endings offer a ton of replayability. Please Square Enix, give us an HD-2D remake of this game!

honestly, i would say i enjoyed the amount of dialogue (a bit less it ok but not halved) and i loved what it "stole" from twin peaks and co because i think it fit perfectly in this game. and just because it was done once in another medium, why not do it in this medium. even with that i really enjoyed watching this video, it was made really well , nice edited and a nice script.
