That counter is crazy. It just... it just straight up puts you in amped mode after doing a bunch of damage. My biggest complaint about switch axe is GONE with the addition of a new defensive maneuver.
I would agree if it didn't require you to have 2 bugs, swaxe has a lot of utility silkbinds for positioning already so having something to really pump out burst damage and the fact that the slow startup means you can't reactively counter most things makes it fine to give large damage and amped state. Keep in mind longsword has both preemptive and reactive counters that not only cost no bugs but also level your gauge so swaxe getting a preemptive one for 2 bugs that makes you amped is not a big deal imo

As someone who's always loved Switch Axe, and has completely fallen in love with it all over again in Rise... I am SO fucking pumped for Sunbreak!! The Swaxe just feels so good in this game, and imo is the best iteration we've ever gotten, with it actually meshing the two modes super well. I always hated the playstyle of "Stay in Sword Mode as much as feasibly possible, and only use Axe Mode to prep Sword Mode." Swaxe just feels so good as a flowing weapon between the two modes.
@@PackOfWolves928 using the silkbind puts you into a stance. When you press the morph button (axe>sword, default is one of the trigger buttons I think) in that stance, you'll do a single slash with an explosion. If you get hit during the attack animation, you'll do the counter attack 👍
@@PackOfWolves928 need to time the morph just before you get hit, like when the monster is literally about to smack you. The timing is actually a bit tight
The counter is so good I'm kinda having love-hate relationship with it because you pretty much have to always be using it now, same as the morph skill.
Honestly kinda hope they make it not instantly fill up amp, at least for power phial. Maybe like half of the amp for power phial stuff so the downside of taking much longer to amp with power phial still exists. This is just a bit too easy to fully amp.
I see more of a playstyle where you only use the counter to get into amped state, then use your maneuverability options and usual combos to dish out your damage. This counter for sure won't be used against certain monsters like ibushi, narwa, and more than likely Mitsuzune. That thing just gets headlocked.

Niiiice! I was wondering how to use that counter properly. Being a GL main nowadays, I sort of expected a more instantaneous thing (like Guard Edge is) but this seems nice too. Maybe I'll focus more on SA in Sunbreak after neglecting it since 4U.
I love this game and I’m super happy to see him in sunbreak but it’s really when you fight astalos that you realize how much we lost on hitlag, like every hit on astalos in GU made you feel like you were swinging the dragonslayer and it’s really something I miss :'(
I remenber when they annoused the dogs everybody wanted to justo bring dogs 5:28 but damn cats are si much useful here that is almost unfair for the dogs, like they were only mean to be uber
I spent way too long trying to figure out the counter and when to use it that I accidentally triggered it and was like 'how did I do that?' so that now I am trying to let it happen naturally and plan alot less stressfuly.
Ended up shy of a sub 6 run due to Plesioth like hitbox. Had a "Only in monster hunter" moment when I instantly died after stepping on the Astalos head saber while it was stuck in the ground 😭
What do you even mean with the axe being gone Youre talking about the MH game that uses the axe the most of the franchise. Between amped affecting axe and rapid morph you use the axe as much as the sword

And yes the Phials affect Axe mode. But Sword still offers far more DPS if you don't want to use thes switch combo for whatever reason. And you don't even need to stay in Axe to recharge the thing because you just do the Silkbind Charger thing whenever the Sword Gauge is getting empty. And the buff you get from Wildswing Combo with the overhead slam is the most useless buff in the game. With Soaring Wyvernblade und the new Counter its so easy to get into Amped mode anyway. They should'Ve left the Power Axe mode like it was in Iceborne where it actually buffed the Axe mode and not make it charge faster for like 10 seconds.

And the switch button is still an axe attack when it morphs from sword, believe or not. If not, we can do the same with sword, and you get that the only sword attack you use is the double swing 1 time in between the switch combo, so i dont see how sword is eclipsing the axe.

Axe mode was entirely worthless in the other games unless you wanted to cut a tail, except back then there was no reason to swap between modes. In older mh you would get around 30% more dps if you just reloaded your gauge because axe mode was so incredibly awful at dps and swapping offered no bonus to gauge recovery.

Similar to Iai slash for long sword you put yourself into a ready stance and parry at the opportune time. It is NOT like metsu-Shorugeki for Sword and shield were you press the input at the moment of the attack to parry. Second: you need to press your attacking or morphing button (mine is R1) to actually trigger the attack Third: the parry will still do damage if you press your attack button, even if the parry does not trigger (which is nice) Fourth: you will know when you do it right, when that chime sound plays and your Swaxe gage completely fills up. You can actually see the proper timing because similar to the Swaxe move "Invincible gambit" there are wirebug threads that surround the hunter while the "counter" part of the move is active. So you can just play with the move and look at the animation to see when that sweet spot is. There we go I think that's everything 😄

The only thing worse than LS Iai slash is the initial prep time, everything else is straight up better, the reaction window, the dmg and the utility. Its less skilled to use, but you can use it in less situations because you have to enter the counter stance a bit before you would do with a LS.
Yet another weapon with not only a newly added counter, but one that instantly fills its upkeep mechanic too....again... yey I don't mind the crazy sugar rush of deleting weapon individuality/downsides in place of adding mindless fun, but I sure demand a hearty savory stew afterward (and deeply fear the sugar rush doesn't go away in MH6 & onward)
The run is insane and the counter is cool, but MH isn't designed to be a counter based game. Weapons getting counters breaks the combat, especially with how big the rewards are. Counters generally are supposed to be a high-risk high reward type of situation, but in MH the risk is very low. The problem is that counters have too many s and can be activated in advance, instead of needing perfect timing. Monsters leave predictable openings, essentially turning every counter into a huge upside for the hunter. Astalos is a perfect example. In rage mode he always does his wing slam twice, leaving a huge opening after that. Once you know this every counter is free damage. Similarly, after burying the tail and discharging he leaves a huge window after that, again turning a dangerous attack into child's play. The worst is that I see more and more people demand their weapon get a counter attack. MH is balanced around dodging, if counters instead become the focus, then Monsters need different attacking patterns to compensate. Not the predictable openings of the past.
I swear, the SA counter is almost random. I REALLY hope they tweak it a bit more with the full game, or else I feel it's not gonna be worth running over the reload.

You can litterally run both, the counter is even easier to land than LS Iai slash, has great dmg and puts you in amped state instantly which only because of that alone is worth aside of the counter side of it. He failed a lot of counters not becase of timing, but because the monster straight up missed its hit on a stale target.
No, in fact, I think the counter will be nerfed a little bit in the full game. It currently has too many benefits for the risk. I would argue it is more broken than most of longsword's counters because of how Switch Axe works with the amped state.

You can counter an attack, get the hyper armor, but get no follow up and take full damage because the game randomly decided the counter didnt actually connect. It's really annoying, and really hurts the usefulness of the move. Personally, I dont like flipping a coin to decide if an attack will do anything or not.

I love that its just unwieldy enough with the long windup to not instantly turn Switch Axe into an invincible powerhouse, but its strong and impactful enough to be rewarding and useable. perfectly balanced.

Agreed lmao. I started playing Swaxe in Rise for the first time a few days ago and I was really annoyed that it didn't really have any counter attacks
as long as you successfully pull off the move it puts you in amped mode even if you miss all of the hits
