Tosin Abasi (Animals as Leaders guitarist) wrote the guitar parts and Matt wrote drums to it. I think they talk about it in their live from Guitar Center video.
What I know is, on their early days wway back before matt, they programmed the drums just like what they did with CAFO (navene played before matt) then it's up to the drummer if he want to add fills.
Naw. self titled was all tosin and misha. Weightless was mainly tosin with Javier and navene? And joy of motion was a collaborative effort, pretty sure para mexer is straight Javier. And madness is group. I think Matt wrote arithmophobia.
It's pretty much tosin's band so I think most of the guitar riffs come first... I have seen them in concert it is freaking incredible!!!!. Do react to, Thoroughly at Home
Alex is drumming for the upcoming Intronaut album, bitter sweet for me, as their old drummer Danny Walker is easily one of my favorites of all time. But I do love Alex, I have a signed snare head from him and the rest of the Faceless!
This is by far the best comment section I've ever come across on youtube! (given how toxic youtube comment sections can be) The video is only 8 mins long, but the comments had me laughing for half an hour xD
It actually is the guitarist, Tosin Abasi, who writes all the music and then builds the drums and a second 8 string guitar around it. The first album for AAL was just the guitarist and programmed drums before adding in the drummer and second guitarist. That’s one reason why this band is crazy amazing.
That's not how they write at all lol, but I agree with your line of thinking regardless. Tosin writes things, maps the drums, and then let's matt write his own shit after. First two AAL had no drummer, but I believe Navene helped map the second. That's another amazing fucking drummer. Navene Koperweis. Goddamn insanely precise. His solo work "Fleshwrought" is a metal virtuoso's wetdream.
@Clark Culver Actually, those were his exact thoughts, tad he felt like the drummer just recorded improvisations, and afterwards everybody aligned to a composition of those ideas. It is quite clear he thought that, since he repeated the notion during the end of the video.
The Joy of Motion was written together with Tosin, Matt and Javier. Most of the complex parts was Matt writing down an idea and then sharing it with Tosin and Javier. The newest album, the Madness of Many, practically everything is written by Matt, e.g. the drums were done first and then everything else layered in over the top by Tosin and Javier. Matt is a rhythmical god at this point.
I remember playing a showing in Maryland like...10 years ago? There was a band there named The Lost (Lonely?) Tourists, fronted by brother and sister vocalists. They were really good in general, but their drummer is who really stood out. And Anup was that drummer. We stayed in touch, him posting cover videos through the years, slowly building his studio. Now he's who he is, and it's so insane to see, and I'm really happy he has found so much success. Another similar dude is Chris from The Ghost Inside...played local shows with him all the time and now he's who he is. Just so awesome to see people flourish. Maryland has such insane music talent.
Another awesome drummer! Need to check out Gene Hoglan when he was playing with Devin Townsend in Strapping Young Lad ('Skeksis' drum playthrough). Also check out Blake Richardson with Between The Buried And Me.
As far as the writing process goes, Tosin Abasi is the brains behind the operation. If you listen to the guitar parts, you’ll find that all of the instrumentation is meant to flow around those guitar parts. So a lot of times in these sections, Tosins’ guitar riff begins for a couple bars and then Matt comes in with a full and then sits into groove. Everyone in the group is talented enough to the point where they all know how to compliment each other and play to each other’s strengths.
I went to a Javier reyes clinic where he stated it happened as this the guy in the video said. Matt recorded and send them the recording so they could compose over it.
Animals as Leaders is written by the guitarist Tosin Abasi. I can't tell you about their writing process, but guessing by their prior work, their first album had programmed drums, programmed by Misha Mansoor of Periphery, so I have a feeling that he lets the drummer do whatever as long as it adds to the mood that he is trying to convey. If you just let someone else do the drums, that shows that you aren't too picky and just want something good to go along with your own sound. This can lead to some really fun drum patterns if you hire a good drummer, and Animals has always had great drummers.
Already have seen a bunch of your videos in a couple of days dude. An actual musician doing this, a drummer even, is brilliant. Learning stuff (hemiola!) and you're funny as hell. Just subscribed so keep it up!
I personally think Alex’s rendition of the song is pretty weak. The original drummer Lyle Cooper blows it out of the water. Don’t get me wrong Alex is a great drummer but he flubs his timing up quite a lot.
LOVEEE animals as leaders. i dig your channel man! I studied Jazz at Humber College but i love prog and metal so that's what lead me to your channel. To touch on your query about the writing process, i think it's different for every band- Anyone correct me if im wrong, but i believe they've spoken about it and they say that Tobin will come up with a riff, or Javier and they'd explore that and see where they can take it. Other prog bands like TesseracT write differently - i had a lesson with Jay Postones (drummer) and he said that the band leader (forget his nameeeee) writes all of the parts and gives them to the members
First I watched the entire video and enjoyed your reactions to progressive metal. I love that kind of music and was so into it that I didn't notice the trumpet. Then I read the comments, and then looked a little closer at 02:00. Now I have cried with laughter. My stomach hurts from joy. Runny nose and eyes from tears. Chances are, knowing the style he comes from (Periphery/Misha Mansoor wrote this way often), they would record rough tracks of the guitars in their software and actually program the drums in. Chances are Tosin Abasi (AAL's guitar player) wrote the songs, programmed some basic drums, sent it to Matt Garstka, and let him go ham on it to write new parts. But that's more or less how AAL's first album was made (please fact check me I could be wrong). But the drums were programmed and Tosin recorded the album with Misha Mansoor of Periphery at his home studio. This band was initially very guitar oriented, with crazy insane guitar parts.
