⏩ Video Question: Which band or song do you hit up to get that music math fix??
For live content catch me on Twitch. www.twitch.tv/drumrolltony
Animals as Leaders :)
Definitely Sokoninaru ua-cam.com/video/8OM58AreiNI/v-deo.html and of course MESHUGGAH ua-cam.com/video/axGn6qeJHcM/v-deo.html
Definitely Meshuggah!! Their drummer Tomas Haake is another one of a kind drumming monster. They basically pioneered the genre AAL got their start in haha. Tons of polyrhythms, tons of riffs that extend over the bar. I second @moorkowbell 's Clockworks track recommendation. Would love to see you go down the Meshuggah rabbit hole
Check out Chris Turner
Chris Turner " Escapist", Morgan Agren " Sol Niger Within " medley w/ Fredrik Thordendal
Obviously he’s a chops beast, but it’s his composition and arranging skills for me. And also people are always like “he’s an alien” but you said “work ethic” and that’s really most of it.
💯
His channel is great, he's so helpful to drummers
@@pitpride1220 He’s a triple threat: Chops, musicality, humility
Matt just broke down the whole song on his channel with a whiteboard and 20 minutes time. It's fascinating.
Matts from Massachusetts and went to Berklee College of Music the same years I attended, 07-11 era.
He can literally play all genres of music and in my opinion is the best drummer on the planet.
Definitely check out his play through of “Gordian Naught” or the AAL song “The Woven Web”
Oh sweet. Lol that makes sense. Cool that you went there also!!
Berklee?
I would love to see the "Dream Theater Mikes" (Portnoy and Mangini) playing this.
A Berklee drop-out and would-be professor... Could they do it?
Thanks for checking this out! Glad you liked it. If you want more there's the playthrough for "Gordian Naught" or "Microaggressions", both pretty insane. If you want to see a short improvised live solo there's a video he uploaded to his channel called "1 section 2 solos", and that's pretty incredible too
Added Gordian Naught to my list. Thanks!
Microaggressions is insane
I just found this out but Matt has a student and his words are that his student picked up everything that he threw at him and went beyond...his name is Lang zhao, his band resonance..welcome to the future
Yep, that kid is nutty in his own right. I catch something new every time I listen to him play
Anytime I watch any of the 3 from this band, I finish the video feeling disoriented, confused, and impressed. Tosin, Javier, and Matt are three of the best in the business.
You HAVE to check out Meshuggah. The best drum cam videos are Clockworks and Bleed, but their best songs are Dancers to a Discordant System (check out the live version, it’s their best song), Demiurge, Rational Gaze, Phantoms (new track), New Millennium Cyanide Christ, I can go on for ages haha
yeah check out mehuggah song called " i am that thirst ", its like meshuggah kind of the djent, especially the last part, its the djent era. Anyway, this song is very very ridiculously good 😊
Really enjoyed watching your reaction to this one :) Pretty much all songs on the album rips in their own way, excited for your next AAL video!
I think for better understanding we should say the structure of the song is on 5 and 7 16th note groupings instead 2 and 3... It is 5-7-7-5-5-7. The 5 group is subdivided in two chunks (2+3) and the 7 in three chunks (2+2+3) in that phrase only the first note of each chunk is played and there is where so-called 2 and 3 groupings are coming from
Matt Garstka and Chris Turner are changing the game. Period
9:15 We just gonna ignore how he barely moves his right wrist in this fill.. dude playing the drums like picasso... but man the speed we moved around the kit with zero effort- mastered drums all the way up to ergonomics and efficiency
Math Garstka
Lmao
LMAO going to use this on the next one
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Cool 😊
Amazing! I don't even know enough to comprehend this, but WOW! I'm so new to them. Tosin is AMAZING! This drummer is NUTS!
Should check out the woven web by them. There's 2 live versions, one from 2016 and 2020 that both sound great and you get to see the entire band play.
I love the live version from the Brutal Assault Tour. The energy released is insane.
Best line was “Normal folks can’t do this”.
Hahaha
Worth while drummers to check out if you don't know them already; Eric Moore, Dali Mraz, Marco Minnemann, Travis Orbin and Gergő Borlai.
love Marco and Travis, Eric too
Arithmophobia is an absolute banger too. time signatures aren't crazy but just super groovy and still difficult to play
Another sick reaction.
I'd really love to hear your input on the Animals As Leaders song Gordian knot. Out of all of his drum playthroughs, that's the one that blows me away the most.
By far!
Thomas Hakke (Meshuggah) drum cam play through for "Clockworks" will be just as amazing as this!!! So many incredible drummers to see so little time:)
I just added to my list. If you have others please reply with a link. Thanks!
ua-cam.com/video/axGn6qeJHcM/v-deo.html
Clockworks
The 16th kicks with matching snare ghosts and avcents on guitar is in every album at least twice
I love the shiny crash on the way back in on the and i think of 2
If you havent already, check out his youtube channel. He goes over how he put this song (and a few others) together. Im not a drummer and it fascinated me so Im sure you'll get a kick out of it
Yup. Wow.
That about sums it up
If you have not seen Alex Rudinger play Xenochrist by the faceless I highly suggest it. He is also a master of subdivision. Absolute beast of drums.
Oh yeah I second that!!
And lyle cooper play planetary duality by the faceless too
@@adityopratama7836 or The Ancient Covenant! That's a good one too.
Dude is so good.. absolutely wild.
You have to do Gordian Naught with Matt too. Insane, as you’d expect..
He’s such a beast!! I really think you should check out Chris Turner - 40 roll, I think it’ll be right up your alley. I recommend reading the description of his video before you watch though, all natural drums no triggers or grids.
He should probably do the entire album, maybe wait for all of the videos to drop
@@tetsuyakuroko7608 haha true, every video has been so dope!
Sweet. I just added it to my google drive. Thanks for the recommendation.
Idk if anyone has said it yet but Matt playing Casimir Liberski is mind melting. Insane stuff.
Always enjoy your reaction to insane musicianship. If haven't ever checked out Dirty Loops, they're a Swedish trio that are some of the best musicians all in one band that I've ever seen. "Work Sh*t Out" is a perfect example of their abilities
I love Dirty Loops. I did that exact tune about 7 videos ago or so
"Sir, you are a treasure. A treasure to the drum community." ABSOLUTELY Garstka is the drummer Earth would send if aliens came down and asked for the best drummer, hands down.
Bro i’m EXCITED for you to explore more of Matt. Check out Inner Assassins and and some of animals as leaders older stuff. I need to see the reaction.
Javier and Tosin like stranged effects in the music, he search for things like thath. Math is a alien.
This is like Al Di Meola "Race With The Devil On A Spanish Highway" ->Steve Gadd stuff warped into 2020ish realm... face melting.
I'm so happy that I live at the same time as Matt Garstka..
Hey I haven't seen you cover ectogenesis yet, the kick drums towards the end boggled my mind the first time i heard them. Of course they are always improving and this is an older track but hey thats my 2 cents. You have covered alot of their most impressive (drums) stuff already though.
Hey do you play tarkov?
Would love to see you do a video on Matt Garska play through of 'Gordian Naught' .... the end of that song is insane.
At 10:30, the “altered swing feel” is called metric modulation. This guy is an absolute animal (no pun intended)
Of all the commentary I've seen on this playthrough, you sir spoke my mind...yup, normal folks just couldn't 🤣...pretty much. So good it's laughable
Anything on their new album is insane.
We all ask the same question after a Garska episode: did i'm still a drummer?
ohhh yeaaaaa
I would think the best way to learn a song is backwards right like the last part doesn't have the double bass parts but it has the same pattern so you could learn it with single Kix And then once you get that down you could add the crazy stuff
Luke Holland and his cinema revisited is a great watch.
Go ahead and do gestaltzerfall, that's my favorite on that album. Same space and set up as the red miso video.
The song is actually not based on 233223 as the comment says... it's 577557
He's my favorite...
Displaced Syncopated stumble? For thar last part
I used to play like this, but I didn’t have a camera to record myself 😜 lol
So much is happening
Check out more of his playthroughs from the new album! They're all mindblowing.
I'm looking forward to that
Since you said you love odd groupings, what about completely odd timings? You should check out Elliot Hoffman from Car Bomb - Spirit of Poison is particular sick. They also play with no click at all, if that piques you're interest!
I think you'd really get a kick out of Protest the Hero. They're a pure musician's band, to the point that they've released their last 3 albums independent with paired instrumental versions because they got sick of all the stuff that wasn't making music. It unfortunately means they haven't made a music video in almost a decade, but all their albums are on their UA-cam channel. My favorite song off their most recent album is Soliloquy. Easily one of the most overlooked bands on the progressive side of the metal scene. They're masters of writing songs that are ridiculously technical but still absurdly catchy.
Gordian Naught next plz!
check red miso out. When matt does the accented blast beat around 2:30 in 7 (i think) it blows my mind...
I did that song I think
@@DrumRollTonyReacts first vid for me on your channel, liked and subbed. Great job man. I’ll have to track down that vid
He has a breakdpwn video how he comppsed it
The stuff that he does. When first seen... Mind = blOWN!!! :O :S Although I'm hearing many patterns and rhythms and dynamic signatures!! WHOA!!
Nice video man. You should check Anthony barone and chris turner ;)
drumroll, time for a reaction to LATERALUS / fibonacci math for days
Awesome reaction man appreciate ya all his stuff is cool to check out also if you're looking for drum stuff, try searching Tim Alexander Chicago Drum Clinic...he's the dude from Primus and it's pretty sicc
We played with Tim this year in the Seahawks Drumline. I have the video up
Check out David Diepold and Chris Allison.
Another very good drum playthrough is by Luke Holland - Tendinitis
Excellent. I just added to my Google drive list for material to do. Thank you much
You need to react to Bobby Jarzombek
Gordian naught next please.
That srummee is ogh as uck
You mentioned the guitar having an effect that made it sound like it was loading. No effect, just a killer guitarist (Tosin Abasi), and he's actually got a playthrough vid of this song on his channel if you wanna check that out. The techniques he uses are wild, including what he does to achieve that "loading" sound. Insane the amount of talent this whole band has
Conflict Cartography is probably my favorite track on this album. Check out Matt’s performance. It’s insane!
ua-cam.com/video/scowIVp9k2U/v-deo.html
Thanks for the link. Added to my list.
💀
Let's see AI compete with Matt.. 😂
Lol exactly.
Try tzu jan
I think an inevitability is going down the Baard Kolstad rabbit hole, which it seems to me you will enjoy every moment of. This one is a good place to start.
ua-cam.com/video/nj6fM2KpyOA/v-deo.html
Added this one to my list. Thanks
Great reaction as always. If im not mistaked this might be the song that Matt wrote drums first and the rest of the guys built on top of his idea. Sad to see Matt leave AAL they wont be the same without him.
he didn’t leave. where did you see that?
Psh, I bet he could add 10-12 more cymbals to that kit.
😅😅😅😅
Well, you're going to have to check out the trio GEM. Instrumental trio that featers Matt and the bass player from dirty loops. and a great pianist
Thank you. I just added "Crazy Tweaks" from GEM to my list of videos for reactions. If you have a different one that should be the first please reply with the link. Thanks!
@@DrumRollTonyReacts sorry brother, i don't have my notifications on. i see youve since reacted to them and im sure youve seen some other songs but here is a link to "vertigo" ua-cam.com/video/nt8LO0boWT8/v-deo.html
Dont feel bad many a pro drummers reax is literally i dont know where the 1 is
Bro, you MUST check out his work he did with Casimir Liberski on the album Cosmic Liberty. Here is a taste: ua-cam.com/video/gDTQ3teLnEg/v-deo.html Different vibe but same Mathematical Stank. I guarantee you will cream your jeans.
ugh S. W.
Mudvayne's first album L.D. 50 was full of awesome rhythmic patterns like this, and that came out in '99 or 2000. Their song "(K)now (F)orever" has the bass and drum pattern 4,3,2,1 come up a lot (most noticeably around the breakdown at 3:17). Also their song "Everything and Nothing" the drummer Matthew McDonough patterns his bass hits around hit snare drum hits. 2 bass drum hits before snare, 1bd hit before then after snare, then 2bd hits after snare...BBS, BSB, SBB. L.D. 50 opened my mind as a young drummer...alobg with every Tool album of course.
He's a phenomenal Drummer no doubt in that, but i find his composing skill quite boring not much power. Just a personal opinion
Everyone's opinions are valid. Who is someone that you do find very exciting on drums?
@@DrumRollTonyReacts I personally love navene koperweis the first drummer of animals as leaders who currently plays for enthoes. Tomas haake, Chris adler, Sam Applebaum, Buster odeholm, Billy rymer, Jay Postones and a few more...
I disagree with your opinion on Matt but I definitely agree that people sleep on navene
You keep rewinding. It's fkn boring, dude.
220k people were ok with it
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Lame excuse & flex. S'ok tho, it's the first & last video of yours I'll ever see.
@mpk33 Lol. Only you care dude. You came outta the gate as a dick. I matched your energy. Foh. However...it's not an excuse. In order to qualify for the 1976 fair use copyright act you MUST make content transformative. Guy... lmao you can't just play someone's work front to back. If you don't youtube, don't give advice on how to youtube. Also... the rules aside how tf would you not stop Matt Gartska and go back? This shit is beyond complicated and needs several looks over.
Bruh, obviously if the people following him wouldn't be okay with it he wouldn't have as much followers as he does currently
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Whatever ya reckon, coqhead. FOH, meng...
