Ok I haven't seen that technique since the '70s, and it was rare then, but a few custom home tapers I knew would do the whole house with a horsehair brush and their fingers as you show. Never saw a prettier more consistent texture wall by wall, room by room than they would put down. Excellent Video, thank you.
Awesome video and thank you! Just followed the directions and a ceiling patch I did turned out perfect. Cheers
Thanks for the great video! I was able to match my ceiling flawlessly
Been texturing for 30 years and have been using these techniques you've just showed for just as long. Nice job, repairing different textures is definitely an art, glad to see someone doing it correctly 👍.
Yep, awesome. Finally someone shows the secrets!
Awesome job thanks for sharing!
Amazing work........and the best explanation and result I've ever seen, your a true master !!!!!
Having trouble finding the "Magic Fingers". I went to Lowes and Home Depot and neither had them in stock
😂 you have them if you practice the magic fingers.
Its just something that's acquired with time dedication and love 😆
😅🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for sharing such a great work.
That's beautiful!
The old school methods are always good 😊
That does look spot on. Nice.
This video is awesome. I had tried a texture sponge initially, but the flicking and dabbing works better. My density is a bit low at first, so I will do a second round of dabbing after this dries.
An artist, thats what you are!!
Very helpful thank you 🙏
Bravo! Thank you.
Awesome job!!!
Love this.
you are a life saver. im a painting contractor and I hired out a knockdown patch for a house im repainting. well the drywalled sucked. he tried twice and it still looks awful so im redoing it. going to follow these steps!
It takes skill and patience. Just make sure to get the background just right. Please message us a picture when finished.
This is a cool technique. I might have to try it as I'm trying to match that exact same knockdown texture over a poorly done patch job by a previous owner. I've been trying to match it with a dedicated knockdown sponge but the sponge can't do the small dots in between the larger splats that mimic a professional spray job. I've also been using all purpose green mud, but it sounds like the 45 minute hot mud might have a better standout. Thanks for posting the video!
You’re welcome. Hope it works for you.
What a great job and helpful video! Thanks
Thank you!
Art bro 😎 thanks 🙏
Thank you this helped me
Right on… funny ive been a stucco n drywall guy for 20 years and have used everything possible but have never flicked it with fingers… im impressed. Its always difficult to match a rig spray but that looks pretty 👍
Thank you. I have been doing this for over 20 years and do all repair work. Im ocd too lol. It’s the only way to match that rig lace without it looking like an eye soar.
Oh my gosh! That’s what I’m talking about!
No need for a $25 spray can of ceiling texture!
I was installing my fitness pole and did one quick spin on it, looked up and my fraggin’ ceiling was punctured...damn! I thought I was on a joist but missed it by 1/4”...I’ve done some mudding but never had to match a heavy orange peel knockdown...This video is EXACTLY what I needed!! Thank you!!
You are welcome! Those cans are garbage anyways. The only one that really works is the orange peel one but even that can be tricky. Make sure to hit that joist this time 😊
Cough cough - strip pool!?
Nice job!
Dude awesome video thank you so much this helped me on a job! You creative sob
Thanks man
Dang this was awesome
Wow that was great! Very helpful. Do you have a list of materials that you use? Im trying to reno our bathroom and there’s an area we need to match the texture. Thank you
Great video
Nice work
Amazing
Awesome Video!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you!
The best video I've seen on this subject.
Thank you. I have perfected the craft.
Great work sir that's what you call texturing by hand ...literally
Thank you
I just had to cut out a large section from my garage wall to repair some copper pipes behind the wall. Am replacing with fresh drywall because the original got water logged. Will try this to repair and finish. If I can get it close to existing texture I'll be thrilled.
Thanks for sharing the secret my textures are on point now
Sweet! I’m glad it helped. Thanks for commenting
Thank you
Amazing job
Thank you!
Perfect
Thank you sir
Looks good
Thank you 🙏
Excellent!
Thank you!
Thanks for the video
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching
Thanks for the video. Getting my Dad's house ready to sell. Was wondering how to do this
Love the first person view. Great video
Thank you 🙏
❤ that's bad ass 😊
I have been using a balled up plastic bag to raise it a bit before knocking it down. It has worked for me, but doesn't look nearly as nice as this!
Im going to go punch a hole in my wall now just so I can try this technique!
:-) that was cool. thanks
Thank you.
Pretty damned impressive😎
I gotta practice this
Seeing you flick it on was a real surprise... came out pretty good!
Thanks. I get that a lot but it works
I have been using a sponge to hand texture a heavy knockdown to match existing texture, but I used your finger dab technique for the inside corners and that works to get into the tight space.
How long do you let the 45 minute mix set after applying before you knock it down?
Just crazy enough to work!
😂 sure is. It works tho
@@finaltouchdrywall yes it does. i just used that method, but it was a heavier knockdown texture, so I dabbed it on with my fingertips. client was amazed!
wow what an awesome video! i just did a little patch like this and struggled trying to match texture. I wish i would have watched this video before i did the patch!
do you have to wait for the mud to dry at all before knocking it down?
Thank you! I used 45 min mud so as long as it drys some to create that base you should be good.
Great tips!
It is definitely an art to be able to match an existing texture.
It’s one of the hardest ones to match. Thanks for watching.
Thank You.
You’re welcome
Awesome
Thank you!
i use hopper and gun no problems perfect ever time
What kind of mud did you use with your fingers? Regular air drying mud or fast setting?
Never did anything like this before as far as texturing a ceiling but it worked. Flicking it on the ceiling does get messy.
Plastic the area before doing works well. It is messy tho. Glad it worked for you!
Flicking with a brush works good too.
I feel this works a lot better but whatever works
Nicely done! Lots of little dots.
This guy came in like a wrecking ball.
That dudes shoulders must look insane
👍👍😊
Not gonna lie, you had me in the first half! Looks incredible tho, thanks for the tip! #magicfingers
Thank you!
Thanks for the videos, very informative and appreciated!
My dilemma: I'm a newbie at creating ceiling finishes, and I have a 20" x 40" section of ceiling in my GF's house that I've patched (after watching your videos, thanks!) but now have to match the finish/skim coat. It's some variation of knockdown finish but I can't find any YT videos that clearly show any knockdown that is very similar to what I have.
Question: Is there an online "drywall / ceiling / plastering forum" where I can upload photos of my ceiling finish, and where someone could see it and tell me exactly how to replicate that specific finish? Any help wld be much appreciated, thank you!
PS: I don’t have any special equipment like a spray gun or plaster finish sprayer. Just the regular hand tools, sponges, a Homex can of knockdown texture spray (which doesn’t seem to apply anything nearly as thick as what I apparently need) etc.
Everything comes down to how dense the knockdown is on the ceiling. The denser it is, the bigger the globs of drywall mud you need to put on the ceiling. Lighter is less so. I've had mixed success using a drywall sponge, but on large surfaces it gets dicey because it'll start setting up on one end while you work on the other end. I would give this guy's method a shot on a scrap piece of drywall, but experiment with different "densities" of mud splatter.
😂😂😂 good job bud
Thank you!
Great video.
What do I do for a 4 x 6 foot repair?
Thank you! For a bigger patch the Marshall town sharper shooter with the goose neck is the best solution.
@@finaltouchdrywall thank you
I have some tuf-tex mud for texture. Do you thing that would do the trick??
I used hot mud to get the right drips. Hot mud doesn’t shrink. You can try it with the tuf Tex. I haven’t personally used it.
For a stomp texture repair, on ours it looks like the guy used paint mixed with mud, for a more white look. Just to add, i'm fixing on doing one with ceiling paint mixed with mud and water for garage ceiling repairs.. Edit: Now I hear of contractor using primer paint over the dried ceiling stomp texture repair.
Wow. I am impressed. I want to master this technique. I couldn't really tell how you were flicking it because the fingers were moving to fast. I have found the store bought spray can does not produce big enough globs of mud. And the sponge method doesn't work either if you are trying to match a knockdown where the globs are spaced out a bit. Thanks
Thank you! It’s a cool technique. I have been doing it for years. It works well. I have tried all kinds of ways. I don’t do anything over a 2x2 patch most the time.
I’ll make a short video just to show the technique. Check back soon to see.
Do you wait for a certain amount of minutes between applying mud and then knocking it down?
Yes but not too long or it dries up.
@@finaltouchdrywall I had my first practice. The 45 mud was good pancake batter consistency. Took 5 minutes to apply waited another 5 and knocked it down with my plastic knockdown paddle. The only problem is the application. I have to do a better job at making it match. Otherwise it knocked down great and was a good pattern just didn’t match the wall that I will work on.
@@MrJking1962 practice makes perfect. It’s taken a few years to get it right but after you do it enough, you can judge how to apply by the existing that is there. It’s easy now.
But how do I match it to the existing knockdown. This is just showing me a method to do a small section.
why not use a hopper and compressor to apply the mud?
I did this successfully!!! Note: Cover the walls and the ceiling... flicking has a long trajectory! Also, cover your face and head!! :)
My results were a solid B. It is slightly thicker than the knockdown adjacent to my patch, but I'm the only one who noticed.
Thanks for the awesome video. I used the Homax knockdown knife (like $6 at Home Depot), and it worked well.
I practiced first on a piece of scrap drywall, but of course, you're not standing under it during practice. :)
That’s awesome! I’m so happy it worked out. It’s a practiced skill.
May I please ask how you match the previous color?
You have to paint the area.
Using a quick set mud over a drying mud laminates it and looks like shiners with the right light even after painted I’d never do my texture with a setting mud says in bag don’t use for skim for a reason texture is sweet af idk if I’d use this though I’m pretty good with my hopper it’s all bout finger control and mixture . And knowing how to aim it good .. if it’s more spread out just use bigger opening lil less air and soon as u hit trigger be moving it and let off fast works good
Will all purpose mud work for this?
It stands up better with hot mud because it doesn’t string like all purpose does.
Great job, but hey you have any secret to paint ceiling patchs and not the whole ceiling?????
Paint match from Sherwin
What kind of mud you use?
Minute mud that you mix with water. It drys faster and doesn’t shrink as much
Loved the video but couldn't focus much due to loud music.
On the wall, won't it run and drip?
You can't really tell until you paint it.
Oh man thanks, hired a guy that swore he could blend my ceiling. He made it look worse. Now I have attempt to fix his mess.
Everyone thinks they can match knockdown. It’s one of the hardest to match. This method to me is the best way to match it. I nail it every time where it’s not an eye site. It’s only good for smaller patches. Thanks for watching.
hey that's why im here too lol
@@finaltouchdrywall
I am going to attempt a better way. I am a former professional car painter and body repair.
Hi it’s me I’m the handyman that thinks I can match texture LOL
How do you know it's ready to be knocked down?
Test it. The mud we used is hot mud. It sets pretty fast
In the final picture you can definitely see a difference in color between the existing texture & new texture...is that just because it is wet? otherwise, the texture match looks great!
It needs painted after it drys
Rookie
I tried this. Waaay harder then it looks
You even textured the lens
😂 you got that right! It’s a messy job but someone has to do it. Thanks for
Commenting
Did you have plastic on the floor as well?
And this video shows EXACTLY why you hire a professional.
Yo they make a gun for that
😕
If u r so good at matching why not put paint and show the final
And then u can talk about the quality work of others
So if you have 15 holes will you be doing the same ? Waste of time
The camera is making me dissi.
come on, you maybe talented but your end result looks terrible.
