Thank you Paul. I watched your video and followed as best I could on a budget and with a partially bum right arm. I did my first ever knockdown texture today and it doesn't look too bad. I appreciate you explaining clearly even to my level of knowledge in joint compound and texture.
Before you knock it down, would that be the proper way to do the ceilings if they look like that? I can’t find a video on when it looks like it was just sprayed on and left alone.
Omg! All I could say is you rule! This is by far the easiest and most inexpensive way to repair a knockdown ceiling you just saved me so much money I was getting ready to go out and buy a hopper gone that would be such a waste of money because I’ll never use it after this repair is done you’re the best!!!!
I only wish more people would do videos in the format that you have yours is completely explain from beginning to end thorough as thorough could be there’s no question about what the result is as long as the person that’s doing the job is following it the way you do it and again I’m truly grateful you just taught me something that I thought I had figured out already put an easier way to do it and save me money so thank you again and God bless you
What I learned from this video got me a job to patch a knockdown if you were going to do a patch that’s about 2 ft.² how much would you charge your customer without doing a skim coat just blending it in?
I used this technique on my Laundry Room ceiling. After painting you had to know it was there in order to spot the patch. Worked well and looked great.
I'm a professional painter. I just moved to Oregon from Chicago. I grew up in Chicago and nobody uses texture over there at all, so I had to learn how to texture and vidios like this one helped me a lot.
I did the whole back room of my house using this technique. I thought I was being really crafty. It's nice knowing that it's kind of the industry-standard. It looks great.
I'm more of a jack of all trades kinda guy & lately I've been trying a style like this to fix the bad habit I have of rushing the job . Knocking texture down too soon ending up with smooth areas , creating more work in the long run . Glad I came across your channel , reinforces my confidence in being able to fix my screw-ups . I've always thought that what makes a good craftsman is somebody that can fix his own mistakes .thank you. I love learning other trades ,being a floor installer for over 50 years .retirement is fun when keep working at things that you Don't have to do !
Thank you for the recommendation on the sponge and the great tutorial! I successfully followed your lead on a fairly large spot on my ceiling. I did not have a large knife like yours but I was able to use a similar sized scrap of plexiglass with a straight edge. Thanks again!
I appreciate that Geovani!👍🏻 Yes it sure can be tricky for sure. I’m glad you found my video helpful. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend!😎 -Paul
Hey Paul, nice job on blending the new texture into the old. I'm going to be texturing the ceiling in my living room after removing the popcorn ceiling, thanks for the tips on how it's done.!
Just incurred some ceiling damage due to a leak caused by hurricane Milton. Along a joint similar to this. Have minimal experience with texturing. I like your method. Will save this video and refer to it once ready for the work. Thanks
Hi, great video! I really appreciate you showing how to do a repair like this. I have a ceiling with a similar problem. Just moved to Florida, the whole house is a knockdown finish. I have no problem doing regular drywall repair and finishing. But I am unfamiliar with the knockdown finish process. After watching your excellent video, I feel like I can give it a shot. Thanks
This is a good informative video! If you don't want to go thru thinning down regular joint compound, there are premixed texture compounds available or dry powders to mix. You may consider using texture compound as the knock-down finish will match the existing texture better.
I’m glad your making an effort to match the texture of the ceiling. I have wood chip wallpaper and a line of uneven filler across the ceiling. I’m sure even your talents couldn’t match that.
Its not overly difficult, but it takes a good eye to match as close as possible previous texture. Knockdown however, is much simpler to match than an orange peel texture. Not to belittle his work in any way mind you. Everything in the trades takes some amount of time to do it right and make it look good
You are really good. I watch all your videos, and have followed your steps in repairing things in my home. Thanks for taking the time to share your "Know How" with us. Look forward to more videos from you.
Hey Paul, great video as usual. I felt pretty dumb ordering a "special sponge" for this but I was wrong! not only is the sponge quality but it really makes the job easier. Kind of wish I had ordered the 2 pack... :)
That’s awesome Eric!💪🏻 I’m glad it worked well for you. I really appreciate the feedback!🙏 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend!😎 -Paul
when im matching a knock down i always go about 6in to a foot out into existing knock down or Texture just helps alot to hide that one little area try it you will b happy with it but do not do entire area where old texture is just sporadic to keep eyes guessing
Very very good…. I’ve seen other videos and I’ve tried it with a 6 inch stainless steel blade….. very. Bad ,the way you did this is so great I need to get that big plastic knife as well

Liked and subscribed! I started a handyman business last year and this has been one of the hardest aspects. I turn down drywall repairs because they can be tricky! I can build doors and cabinets, but the subtleties of drywall still elude me. Lol. I just picked up a sponge from Michael's that I hope will do the trick for now. Practicing on a friend's ceiling. I have a hopper but don't want to use it on a 6" x 6" repair, and that canned crap was just that - absolute crap. I already tried it and it's a no go!!! Thanks for these great videos. Awesome work.
I used to use crumpled paper but then I found a crumpled safeway bag worked way better to get the stipple effect. or drag it to knock down rock down the texture
My texture looks like that, only the knock down part looks like they’re a little larger in my ceiling. Real close. We remodeled our master bath and around the edge of part of the ceiling. This helps. Thanks
Same result , but if I’m gonna use the sponge technique then I usually apply the texture with a small cigar roller and then sponge it out. Seems to go a little faster that way for me.
Honestly I'm looking for a method without the sponge and lexan for a tiny area where my old tstat was. However, I have to watch this whole thing based on that tape removal alone :)

My children thank you for your channel. They have been patching holes from skateboarding in the house. Mom is happy with THEIR work.
Thank you Paul. I watched your video and followed as best I could on a budget and with a partially bum right arm. I did my first ever knockdown texture today and it doesn't look too bad. I appreciate you explaining clearly even to my level of knowledge in joint compound and texture.
It's always a pleasure to watch a real professional work. You can tell you know what you're doing because you make it look easy!
I was going to say the same thing. But like most tasks, after you've done it a few hundred times, it becomes easy!
Before you knock it down, would that be the proper way to do the ceilings if they look like that? I can’t find a video on when it looks like it was just sprayed on and left alone.

As a former general contractor who always subbed drywall I get how good this guy is and how hard it is to even get close to original
Thank you so much! I've been searching through piles of videos for this

Good idea to wear all white for this job... I will follow that.
You did a great job. I just had a ceiling redone in one area & it does not look good. My contractor will be redoing it.
Thanks for the tips I have to match a heavy texture
Hey Paul, great video as usual. I felt pretty dumb ordering a "special sponge" for this but I was wrong! not only is the sponge quality but it really makes the job easier. Kind of wish I had ordered the 2 pack... :)

Dude, this guy obviously don’t need your help....
I like the magic squeezy with green dot, but gonna have to find one of the acrylic paddles and try it out.
They work really good. Doesn’t flatten out the texture like a metal blade does.👍🏻
Thank you very much! Looks great. Glad I didn't wing it!
Great video, I have always had an issue getting the texturing down right. Thanks!
Very very good…. I’ve seen other videos and I’ve tried it with a 6 inch stainless steel blade….. very. Bad ,the way you did this is so great I need to get that big plastic knife as well
