Back during the "white suit years", I absolutely worshipped Steve Martin. There was no one cooler on the planet. I've always loved this special. It makes me feel happy and nostalgic even watching it today.
When he hits that banjo for real, you can see his face transform instantly from the jester to the maestro. Steve Martin was really, really good on that instrument.
Inspired silliness. We were blown away by Steve in the late 70's! And he could also play the banjo and even juggle. What an entertainer! Will never be another like him.
Fell in love with him when, for my 11th birthday, my mom took me to The Carpenters -yes.... The Carpenters - concert on the USU campus in the 70’s and he opened up for them. I about peed my pants when he stopped mid-pick on the banjo and asked the audience who just farted. I thought that was the funniest thing ever. This is hysterical!
I remember when he was on this tour, my cousin called me one day excited, telling me she had two tickets to go see a guy named Steve Martin at the Stetson University Auditorium in Florida. I declined her offer, saying I was not going to go and sit in an auditorium and listen to a guy stand on stage and tell jokes for an hour or two. Fast forward to four days later, I'm standing in a music store looking for Rush and Kiss 8tracks and they had this album playing over their PA. I stood and listened to it in its entirety and ended up buying everything they had Steve Martin out of that store. To this day I kick myself in the ass for not taking her up on her offer.

I got to see Mr. Martin live twice in Nashville . First time at a small club and again at the Grand Old Opry . OMG I never laugh so hard in my life !!! I've loved him and all his movies . What a treat and honor to see him before he was famous . I'm just ran across this . LOVE IT !
I saw him talking on something recently. He remembered when he finally reached the big time. He was used to playing theaters where the crowd would be 400 people. He got booked into a larger arena. He was worried that only about 400-500 people would show up and that the place would look empty. Backstage before the show he asked his manager how many people were there. The manager answered, "7,000"
Once I moved out of the US, then I experienced full years in a row of never going to jail. Freedom is marvelous, no wonder Americans sing about it so much.

I grew up watching his movies, typically around major holidays surrounded by family. Lots of amazing memories built with those movies in mind. So when I got to see him perform live a few years ago…whew. What an emotional experience that was when he walked out with the banjo.
Say what you will, but that year Steve Martin was the funniest man who ever lived. I truly believe that every American comic since then has had to reckon with the fact that this kind of humor has only been done by one man, never to be replicated. To this very day, this is the funniest stand-up I've ever seen.

This is completely brilliant. The Non sequiturs are so concise and hilarious. Lol he built an act so cerebral it’s entertaining, philosophical, laugh out loud funny. Irony in this is it’s a stand up act but he breaks every “traditional” role of stand up as if to say there is no rules. It’s just me, the audience and time. Haha I stan. On the school bus, and at school everyday was a constant "Well Exxccuuuuusse Meee!" It's interesting to see him change from comedian to straight musician when he plays a musical piece, and then switches back after!

There are just some people that get it and some that don't. My father and I would sit and watch him and laugh our asses off. My mother would be sitting in the kitchen at the counter wondering what the hell we were seeing so funny. This man is a comedic genius. First of all, I remember watching this repeatedly when I was around 12-13. I think we had taped it off HBO (early days, Beta) Second of all, years later I went to Chartres cathedral and it was indeed a moving experience, all jokes aside. Third of all, I don’t know if it’s just nostalgia but this still makes me laugh just as hard now.
A lot of Steve's comedy comes from the way he delivers his lines, but he could really have been a great silent comedian as well. Try turning off the sound. He's still funny and you know exactly what he's doing, thinking and feeling. Same as with Chaplin.

He does the pratfalls, but then he also throws in a literary reference or risky political joke disguised as sarcastic slapstick, with the result that parts of the audience laughs at how funny he looks while the rest of the audience laughs at the jokes between the lines. I like that. He's good and smart enough to layer his humor. And you don't see too much of that today, when everything has to be simple or explained.

When I was a kid, things weren't always great at home. Whenever Steve was on TV though, the world was perfect.
I was around 13 when this happened. We had three tv channels. This was the Ultimate. Nothing ranked cooler or more glorious than this.

I didn’t really pay attention to Steve until SNL (“Saturday Night” back then). I loved the nights he hosted.
