Craftling: Electric Guitar Build

  • This is the result of four weeks of building and waiting, anger and frustration, but in the end i`m quite satisfied with it.
    It is my fourth self made guitar out of oak (neck), maple (body) and ziricote (fretboard). It is truly not perfect but i learned a lot about wood stain and lacquer wood pores and sanding... now i have many ideas to do it better... next time ;-)
    The sound of this two Duesenberg-pickups played over my Orange Amp and my self made 1x12" is that, what i wanted. I am not a recording freak and my playing skills are ... whatever🙂🙃...but perhaps this video is helpful for somebody.
    See you soon!👍

    Great video, and awesome guitar-- thanks for sharing.
    Just a couple suggestions from a 55 year old master woodworker, who has learned many things the hard way, and some the easy way. First, always glue both sides of the wood, and try to use just enough to fully cover each side. . While it may seem that it is not different to glue and rub a single side, tests have been repeatedly done that show that if you do glue both side separately (with the correct glue), that it will always be stronger than the wood (and will not fail in your lifetime in any common climate), while if you do one side and smear, the glue will fail first, and will do so anytime it is sufficiently stressed-- definitely in your lifetime.
    Second, the type of glue matters a LOT, as does the age of it. Do not keep old liquid wood glue (e.g. more than 1-2 years) around. That is unopened and stored at room temp. If it is opened or in a warmer of colder environment, it will degrade quicker. There is plenty of good up to date information on all of this.
    Third, NEVER use anything with acid or oil on it to spread the glue (e.g. fingers have both), as it will begin to affect many types of glue within months, and cause several common issues, depending on the amount on the skin or object.
    Try to use quatersawnfor the neck, for obvious reasons.Your tunability, longevity and playability will be greatly increased, and will not degrade over time like it will for flat sawn necks. Note you can create a quartersawn piece from a flat sawn piece of the proper size.

    • @craftlingsworkshop
      @craftlingsworkshop  5 років тому +49

      Hello Andrew! Many thanks for your extensive comment! Such tips are valuable because they come straight from the practice. I've never thought about it, but it makes sense. Crafting is not my profession and I must confess that I had to google "quatersaw". I'll pay attention to it on the next guitar. The oak piece of this guitar I had been here forever and wanted to consume it finally ... As I said ... Thank you! Have a good time!!!💪👋

    Well let's see here. We have an artist, a designer, a craftsman, a builder, an electrician, a painter, a technician, a mathematician and a musician. Satisfied, I'd be proud to own this instrument. It looks beautiful and sounds fantastic. I noticed you staggered the tuners - nice job. Only the G appears off about 3/8ths. Number 4 may be the one that brings Craftling to begin taking orders. How you determined the head stock angle, the scale length and radius is quite impressive. I can appreciate the frustration, but you created a true diamond. After all, you did what many of us only dream of doing. If you decide to take orders, let me know. Truly outstanding and an amazing creation.You are a very talented man. Great video. Thank you sincerely and Congratulations.

      @@berobujanovi4331 I am a router CNC programmer, I do this for living and already did some guitar bodies for customers.
      My point is: When you can do this by hand, your skill level must be very high, you're an artist. A CNC programmer maybe can speed up the process, but never will reach the art level of a hand craft work.

    • @BigRed-1970
      @BigRed-1970 5 років тому +1

      Very posibly my friend, but machines dont have "soul" or "feeling", craftsmen imbue their creations with their personality and love thus giving you the difference between bespoke creations and off the shelf mass produced products imo.

    • @martinfanatic532
      @martinfanatic532 5 років тому +2

      TL;DR I respect and enjoy this guy's craft, but I don't disrespect the use of CNC machines.
      I really don't understand the hate for CNC, it's simplifying the rough cut and you still need to sand it and fit by hand. Believe me when I say I totally respect this guy's art and also share the sentiment that it feels more fulfilling the more work you do with your hands. But it's really sad to think that just because the process became easier, the level of art deteriorates. Why can't we make use of the best technology available to us to help us create the best work? We went from hacksaws and chisels -> bandsaws and handheld routers -> CNC machines. The first jump reduced the physical labor of cutting, the second jump reduced the input needed to make the cut. I think the innovative nature of humanity to discover new solutions is an art by itself.

    This was helpful! Kind of getting over whelmed by the amount of work going into mine
    I’m building one at school. We gave a class dedicated to it. I used a CNC machine and skipped a majority of the hard cuts and laser engraved the shape into my board for cutting.Today I’m cutting and going to start sanding.
