Thanks for walking us through your list. I was especially chuffed you included The Saints (a coffee shop, convivence store and apartments now occupy what used to be the studio where they recorded the album in). They're a mixture of Punk, Garage, Blues and Horror, but *Shakes Fear & The Skeleton Gang* are a great Australian band well worth listening too.

thanks! Dr. Z here (as opposed to Dr. K), I have to admit as much as I've known these bands and others, hadn't really listened to The Gits, great find, thank you!

Great to see a fellow Nebraskan with exquisite taste! Those are all great albums. I first heard "Machine Gun Etiquette" as a teen and it blew my tiny little mind. Cool to see The Saints in there as well. Hell, they're all great records! Have you seen the live set Amyl and the Sniffers did for KEXP a while back? They've got it! Today I bought the "Punk Note" reissue of one of the records in my top 10, the first Bad Brains album.

Singles Going Steady counts because that was the only way to get those songs if you didn't have all the 45s. Wire's evolution from tight punk band to avant-garde post punk over three albums was unprecedented. And I agree that first Clash album and Rocket to Russia are the right choices

Great list (with a couple I need to check out based on your recommendation). My Top Ten would be:
    1. In The City - The Jam
    2. The Clash - The Clash
    3. Damned, Damned, Damned -The Damned
    4. Pink Flag - Wire
    5. Another Music In A Different Kitchen - Buzzcocks

    8. Inflammable Material - Stiff Little Fingers
    9. Zontar Must Die - The Wombats
    10. This Is The Modern World - The Jam
Love to see you have the Virgin Records pressing of My Generation which is probably one of the (if not THE) best sounding versions of that album. Thanks for the video and keep ‘em coming!

Hey Timothy! I'm totally unfamiliar with the Wombats. Gotta check 'em out. I'm still working on finding a copy of Inflammable Material by SLF. I just have No More Heroes and Go For It on vinyl so far. The Jam are in my top 10 or top 20 favorite bands of all time, but I have a hard time throwing them into a punk list for whatever reason. I guess that first album is their punkiest. Joy Division would definitely be in my top 10 post-punk albums list if I do one! I'm a subgenre girl, and I know that's annoying lol. Take care, and see you next time! Glad you noticed this My Generation press behind me, too!

I didnt personally know her but lots of my employees at the time did! Devistating loss. I agree with your list most of those records would be on mine too...missing to me is Elvis Costellos Classic This Years Model (just a personal preference) but the Big Deal is nobody ever seems to mention Australia's Radio Birdman/ Radios Appear!! Hi from South Australia. I’ve only just discovered your channel so I’m late to this episode.
There are dozens I could have chosen. Some I wasn’t sure quite fit the definition (the first Pretenders album? The Slits’ Cut?)
So I’ve gone for Aussie punk/garage records to try to narrow it down. Even restricting to one country, there are so many equally great records I left off the list.
    Cheers, Dave
    1. The Saints - Prehistoric Sounds (their last album with Ed Kuepper)
    2. Radio Birdman - Radios Appear (original Australian version). This is quite different to the international release you’ve featured. Maybe punk-adjacent; it’s a very diverse album
    3. Eddy Current Suppression Ring - self titled
    4. X - At Home With You. This is the “other” X, an Australian band. Awesome record
    5. Scientists - Blood Red River
    6. The Living End - self titled
    7. The Drones - Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By. Like Birdman, elements of punk but so much more besides. Has the absolutely fantastic “Shark Fin Blues”
    8. Hits - Hikikomori

When I was in Rainy Day Records in Olympia, WA just before the pandemic hit, I remember seeing a flyer in there announcing a show. Of course, that was canceled due to the shutdowns, so I'm glad you'll get to see them!
I really want to pick up that Agent Orange debut. They are actually playing here in September. And Television's Marquee Moon is in my top 5 albums of all time, but I guess I've never considered them punk. Possibly post-punk? I don't know, so hard to classify with the intricate guitar work. What a killer album! Cheers!

Thanks! This was a great list. All those records and bands are worthy of any top 10 list. On my personal list I would have the first Record by the Jam. I know not everyone considers them fully punk but they meant a lot to me at the time. I would also rate the Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers album ”L.A.M.F” highly; again not considered real punk by all but a great record. Then of course The Richard Hell album you had in the background is wonderful. Anyway I could probably come up with loads of others. The question is also if the Slits made punk music per se? Their album is fabulous too and a great influence. Just to say that was a great era and all those albums are splendid.

As far as I was concerned at that time the stranglers were classed as a punk band but my honest opinion was they were a great band who could write great tunes. Hi Hanna, my list probably would be similar to yours. What sucks is if you didn't buy those records some years ago you'll probably have to pay a lot of money for a punk record nowdays, like I don't have The Saints for example and everytime I look for it price is too high. Other genres as expensive as punk and in high demand are post punk, metal (specially things like trash) and rock en español. I'm always looking for anything I can get my hands on from those 4 genres. So I made a list, not of my top ten punk albums but of something you might not see very often, the top ten punk bands with the best discographies, for me tose are: Damned, Ramones, Bad Religion, Fugazi, Clash, X, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Crass , Green Day and Sleater Kinney. Awesome video, very interesting and you seem obsessed like myself 😂👍few recommendations, I'd have to have a long think before doing a top ten but here's a few that mean a lot to me and hold lots of nostalgia. TSOL - Beneath The Shadows, Social Distortion - White Light, White Heat, White Trash, Osker - Idle Will Kill, The Damned - Strawberries, Rubella Ballet - IF, Screeching Weasel - Anthem For A New Tomorrow, Action (punkcore) self titled album, Frenzal Rhomb - Shut your Mouth, Poison Idea - Feel The Darkness, Fear (The Record) Joykiller - Three, The Comes - No Side, Discharge - Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing, GBH - City Baby Attacked By Rats, the list goes on, nearly all of the ones you mentioned too! I was lucky enough to see X Ray Spex a few years before Poly left us!

Great, fun video! Spooky! My list duplicates you on not only the bands, but the specific albums. Two bands (and albums) I might include are on the wall behind you: The Vibrators (pop punk right I would rank up there with the Buzzcocks) and the Undertones. I would also add Angry Samoans - Inside My Brain and Black Flag - Damaged from the early 80's. Finally, the Jam were one of my favorites, and I would pick Setting Sons.
I like the Saints and need to revisit again. Ditto for the Damned. Also, I appreciate the recommendation on the Gits. I had heard about Mia Zapata, but not much about her band.
Thank you for the recommendation on Pistol. I had seen an ad for it, but I haven't heard much about it. There is so much content on streaming!
Finally, re your comments on the Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady (my pick also), I would point out that there are two versions of the first Clash album out there. The original one that was released in England and the US version, which I think was issued after their second album. It has a couple of their later singles. For me, it's jarring to hear those singles dropped in the original album, regardless of how great they are.

Greetings, Erik! For some reason I have trouble putting the Jam completely in the punk territory, even though they are a top 10 or top 20 favorite band of mine. They were so versatile. The Gits are definitely worth sampling. Hope you like them!
If you have time, give Pistol a try! And maybe one day I'll find an early press of this debut Clash album...either UK or US! I'd buy either if it's an OG!

Very solid list love all your picks. My number one would be Bad Religion and any album really can't pick one. Descendents- Milo Goes To College, Minutement - Double Nickels, anything by Social D, Operation Ivy(punk with ska). X- Under the Big Black Sun which is one of my favorite albums. Both of The Gits albums are awesome. It was gut wrenching hearing what happened to that poor girl especially when most musicians demise is self inflicted. 7 Year Bitch - Viva Zapata is a wonderful album that came out after that incident.

    Yep, "chizzick" is right!
I was a teenager in London when Punk emerged and Never Mind The Bollocks captures the times perfectly for me. A lot of social strife and the reason I consider Britain's "generation X" to be earlier than the official definition (Britain's lost, angry generation didn't create Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet!).
I think the playing on NMTBx is great - a rebellion against the meaningless musicality of British rock at that time (as much as I love Pink Floyd, ELP, etc, rock had become safe and parent-friendly).
The lyrics on that album contain so much of the things people from older generations would say at that time. In a way it's similar to the way Monty Python picked up on things people would say in everyday speech in the early 70s like "I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition" and "layabouts" (as captured in their Hell's Grannies skit mocking the way people talked about the youth of the day).

Mick - I can’t thank you enough for writing this. I could take a whole day to respond to all the insightful stuff here. My 8 year old loves a lot of this music and she loves Monty Python. There really is something special about the way early punk absorbs and critiques different accents and as an American I can still *feel* that, even if I don’t get the nuance. And then now, here in Chicago, there are 8 year old kids who are mocking their parents using exaggerated but still pretty accurate Brit accents (especially for kids!) based on Monty and thanks to you I can hear Johnny Rotten in there. And believe me, these kids have Johnny Rotten in them, and have no problem with that.
