I adore Australia. X’s “Aspirations” is one of my favorite albums. I also adore Australia bc I once had a pen pal in the mid 00s who never had American candy; I sent her a bag Reese’s peanut butter cups and in turn I got a jar of Vegemite. Whether I’m listening to The UV Race, Royal Headache or watching this video, her voice is the music that I hear the loudest. Tragedy befell her family and we lost touch. Love the video. I also love your honesty. A heads up, if you ever see a Mystery Of Sixes 7” or future 12” compilation and wonder …they have been compared to The Birthday Party. I dig ‘em, but chances are you won’t 🙃

Haha, getting the Vegemite in return doesn't sound very appealing, but then again, I've never tried it myself! I'm finally sampling X-Aspirations right now. Luckily the full album is on UA-cam and I'm gonna have to get this in the collection. Yep, for sure! Cheers!

Midnight Oil is one of the most underrated bands of all time. Sure, they get critical praise and popular acknowledgment, but they never get credit as being one of the all time greats, which they are...at least to me! 10-1 is a great choice, and I would also highly recommend Blue Sky Mining, my personal favorite. I'm not always the biggest fan of political rock, but like the Clash they pull it off with their intelligence, lyrical poetry, and most of all the passion and the commitment of their performances.

I am a huge Midnight Oil fan as well. 10-1 is a great choice, but they have so many great albums. And they are amazing live. I am also a huge fan of The Church. "Heyday" is one of their best albums, but top spot goes to "Priest=Aura". Like Hanna said, it takes you to another place.

Kudos for mentioning The Saints and Midnight Oil. Another wonderful Australian band (and recently acquired favourite) is Models. During the 1980s, they had the same manager as INXS and opened for David Bowie during his 1983 tour. Two good albums to start off with them are "Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight" and "The Pleasure Of Your Company".

Hey Hanna -- Super excited for your Australian video! Been looking for 'Roman Beach Party' (The Celibate Rifles) on CD for awhile, but it's a rarity. Divinyls first album 'Desperate' is solid -- definitely worth picking up. "Ring Me Up" from that album is actually featured in the movie 'Sixteen Candles.' Saw another poster mention The Chevelles (not to be confused with alt-metal band Chevelle). Awesome power pop. Check out the comp 'At Second Glance' (Not Lame). You'll dig it. Be good & take care!

An amazing overview of Australian bands. The best I have seen from a non Australian on UA-cam, by far. I grew up there and the first concert I went to ( in 1982 ) was a summer outdoor do 4 bands for 4 bucks sponsored by the popular AM rock station of the day. Two of the bands on the bill were The Church and The Divinyls both great live bands. You’ve got The Church covered so I will only suggest that for The Divinyls you get their first self titled album which opens with an Easybeats cover and an EP called “Monkeygrip” both are great and quite frankly miles better than their later stuff. If you like Crime and the City Solution then try a band called The Wreckery. Not brilliant but fun. Others have mentioned The Scientists. They were a great swamp rock band. Amazing live. Lastly I would also like to chime in on Midnight Oil. Their early albums are very hard rocking “Head Injuries” and “Place without a postcard” are well worth getting. As is their later album “Earth and Sun and Moon”. They’ve just put out an album called “Resist” which is a great return to form. Someone posted about seeing them live and being blown away. They were always a great, great, live band but 1980 thru the early 90s they were an absolute force of nature. They wiped the floor with most other rock bands. Case in point, I first saw them on the 10-1 tour and left the venue absolutely stunned. I felt like I’d been run over by a fleet of tanks. Nothing I’ve seen since has come close to the intensity of that concert, nothing. Interestingly I went to see U2 on their “War” tour at the same venue 6 months later and they were utterly limp by comparison. So anyway, great video!

Hi J B! Happy to read this comment! Oh man, the Church and Divinyls on the same bill...that must have been well, divine! I have been on the lookout for that first Divinyls LP and will keep looking. Not too easy to track their stuff down around here for whatever reason. I'll check out the Wreckery. I appreciate the recommendations. I have the pink album from the Scientists but just didn't feature them here. Lots of love for Midnight Oil here and I'm definitely curious in pulling up some of their live footage from the 80s/early 90s for sure. Sounds like seeing them live indeed left quite an impression on you. Awesome! :-)

    • @merlinthemagus
      @merlinthemagus 2 роки тому

If you want to check out some early live Oils then “Midnight Oil at Tanelorn” or “Midnight Oil at Wanda beach” is the way to go. You’ll get an idea and yet unless you experienced it in the flesh… Midnight Oil much like The Who have produced some amazing and seminal albums but they were both such great live bands that the studio stuff always paled by comparison. Also never was a huge INXS fan but saw them on their tour supporting “Shebooh Shebah” and they were a very good live band ( Sandii & the sunsetz were the support ).An INXS album that I would recommend highly is “The swing” a really great mix of pop but with an experimental twist.

Greetings Hanna. So many Australian bands to check out. I had to take notes. The Church are definitely at the top for me as well. At a party, someone dropped the needle on Of Skins and Heart and I said, you've got to be kidding me. Was immediately hooked. Also a huge fan of Dead Can Dance and Dirty Three. I didn't see the album, Cinder in your stack. Would recommend it if you haven't heard it. A bit different, shorter songs and a lot more of them. The first Birthday Party album and their final EPs might appeal to you more, but probably not enough to convert ya. I think you'd dig these too, which I wrote about in a Between the Cracks - Aussie Garage Punk piece:

The Moodists - Thirsty’s Calling (Red Flame, 1984): Think early Jazz Butcher, prickly guitar jangle of Josef K and The Fall.
New stuff: All the Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever!
Royal Headache - High (What's Your Rupture, 2015)
Wet Lips - Wet Lips (Hysterical, 2017)
Mere Women - Romantic Notions (Poison City, 2021)
Body Type - Everything Is Dangerous But Nothing's Surprising (Poison City, 2022)
The Drones - Feelin Kinda Free (Tropical Fuck Storm, 2016)

Mere Women - Big Skies (Poison City, 2017)
RVG - A Quality Of Mercy (Our Golden Friend/Island, 2017)
Civic - Future Forecast (Flightless, 2021)
Mod Con - Modern Condition (Poison City, 2021)
    Parcels - Day/Night (Because Music, 2021)
Stiff Richards - DIG (Legless, 2019)
The Ocean Party - Restless (Spunk, 2016)
Body Type - Body Type EP (Partisan, 2018)
The Ocean Party - The Oddfellows' Hall (Spunk, 2018)
Cable Ties - Far Enough (Merge, 2020)
Crepes - In Cahoots (Spunk, 2018)
Melbourne Cans - Heat Of The Night (Lost And Lonesome, 2018)

Another great Aussie power pop band are The Innocents. Their 2005 album, "Pop Factory" is terrific. In fact, the entire thing is on UA-cam. And let's not forget Rick Springfield who brought power pop to America in 1981 with "Working Class Dog" (despite putting out numerous lp's prior to that). Thanks for another great rundown, Hanna!

Must haves Australian bands - The Mark Of Cain - Ill At Ease, signed to Henry Rollins label 1995ish features the drummer from Helmet and yes it does sound like Helmet but TMOC was playing that stuff way before Helmut. Regardless this is a fucking incredible album and a must have. good luck finding it.
The Meanies - 10% Wierd. Catchy as hell pop punk and all the 90's stuff... all killer releases. Australia's answer to the Ramones?
Buffalo - Volcanic Rock 1973. These guys were doing it before ACDC and this is a killer album for it time. A good copy will cost you into the 100's.
Rose Tattoo - ST 1978.... just a killer rock n roll album... no words needed.
Cosmic Psychos - Self Totalled. Straight outta Melbourne punk rock, Butch Vig said they influenced the seattle scene.... A must have. OK just a few but many more must haves. Dig and Spin!!!!

So good to see you grabbing the Sunnyboys Hanna. I remember mentioning them to you a ways back. Their original vinyl pressings are kind of pricey nowadays. If you ever see the album 'Individuals' grab it. >< I found out recently that Chrissy Amphlett from The Dyvinals sadly passed on at 53. Hi Hanna,
Well, you finally made it happen! The Big Australian Show. Wow that was really worth the 9 month wait. So well done, marvelous job. Aren't enough superlatives to explain what a wonderful job you do.
Of course the first highlight was when you showed radio birdman promo again, which was one of several of my albums you bought in Ann Arbor. Warms my heart that I was able to help you out that way.
Still amazed how I sold those lps, 2 days before the show and I had no idea you guys would be there. So cool.
Anyway, you mentioned all my Aussie fav's:
Hoodoo, Go Betweens, Saints!!!! Know your product. Wow! So kick ass good. And love all saints day lp so much.
Church are premo of course, I knew how much you loved them.
So many others but you know My Fav are Divinyls. Just for me, their Desperate, debut was my fav. Album of 80s. It's a Must have for you.
I might have the CD. Have the original C of vinyl. Maybe I could send you the CD as a gift, to show my appreciation of all your efforts.

The Reels.... A greatly under appreciated band. They began as a country band led by Dave Mason (son of conservative politician John Mason). They ditched country for New Wave, and released bouncy New Wave pop music with dark lyrics that dealt with depression, unrequited love, etc. Then the band showed their true colours with Quasimodo's Dream and Beautiful. They did an excellent version of ''Bad Moon Rising'' in 1986, and sadly fell apart in 1992. Don't be put off by their early Wiggles style of image... there were tears behind the clownishness and they are worth your time.

Singer, Dave Mason, played Lily in the movie ''Ghosts Of The Civil Dead'', which starrred Nick Cave. I am also surprised how you get them in the US. I saw most of those bands live at there peak. Sunnyboys are doing their farewell gig next month here in Sydney. I have seen midnight oil about 30 times and recommend the DVD live at goat island. Hoodoo Gurus are great and still performing. I saw The Stems & Radio Birdman about 2 years ago and better than ever. I was a judge at youth rock when Silverchair got signed. They were the called “Innocent Criminals”. I saw there potential and recommended to Sony that they give them a go and record “Tomorrow” off the frog stomp album. Had a nice chat with each of the guys and got pics with each of them and with the group as a whole.

I really like Radio Birdman, and they remind me of The Damned. OMG I love Hunters And Collectors, especially their album "Ghost Nation." So good. Amyl And The Sniffers are incredible, love love love them. Hoodoo Gurus are great. My fav song of theirs is "Bittersweet." Catchy rock. Getting into The Saints too thanks to your recommendation. Fav Dead Can Dance CD is "Toward The Within." That album really resonates with me. I like The Birthday Party but not so much Nick Cave solo material. I've not listened to Roland Howard...will have to check that out. C&TCS is a decent listen as is Dirty Three. Divinyls! My #1 favorite band of all time. The album you showed, "What A Life," is excellent. I love all their stuff. I have an Aussie pressing of their first LP which has the songs in a different order and a different song than the U.S. pressing. "Temperamental" is great and as you see on my Discogs I picked that up at the record show last weekend. Been wanting that for years. Daevid Allen is my favorite Aussie artist.
He initially migrated to England in the early 60's and became the catalyst for what became the Canterbury scene and was a founding member of Soft Machine. Then he ended up in France where he started Gong. He went to New York after combining prog and punk, starting New York Gong. He eventually returned to Australia and continued Gong until his death in 2015.
He was just a force of nature and creativity, creating some of the greatest prog, psychedelic, punk and pop all through a jazzy sound.

Really nice video Hanna! My favorite Australian bands are easy at the top. Undisputed #1 is The Saints. Also up there is Chris Bailey and Ed Kuepper solo stuff. The Ed Kuepper you mentioned "Everybody's Got To" is a stunning album. Great music. Others are Radio Birdman, The Celibate Rifles, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds (and Nick Cave solo), AC/DC and Died Pretty. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few but these are my favorites. Again, especially The Saints who are one of my top bands ever!! Keep the videos coming Hanna. By the way, I just posted two live shows from The Void from 1979 on my site yesterday. Check them out if you get a chance.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Hey Hanna. It was an enjoyable and informative video as usual. Check out the 9-24-1979 show. It was one of our best. The guitar sounded great. To get a flavor, listen to the first 3 songs-Johnny Moped-No One, Sham 69-Ulster and The Vibrators-You Broke My Heart. I hope you enjoy it.

Really enjoying your recent videos. We’ve really got very similar tastes and collections, especially the post punk stuff. Huge fan of the Go Betweens and was fortunate to have bought the box sets when they came out. Felt like a lot of money at the time but now they’re crazy. Reckon they may get a repress.
The Church mean a huge amount to me and a good mate of mine too. We’ve met Steve Kilbey a couple of times when they’ve played in England and Marty W-P yelled at us to ‘think the words, not sing them’ when we were clearly a bit too rowdy at one gig! Ha well we were just showing our appreciation!

Hey there, Wayne! So glad you're enjoying my more recent content! You'll be happy to know that I will most likely do a post punk update video next...with maybe an emphasis on some goth additions. Oh, you are so lucky you got those Go-Betweens box sets! Never let those go! Hope they get represses in the future. That's so neat that you met Steve Kilbey. I probably could have at the show I attended a few years ago but we didn't stick around long after. I'm cracking up at what Marty yelled at you! Ha! I appreciate the comment, and see you next time!

It was great to hear you talk about The Triffids and to see your Triffids vinyl, I love them as well. 'In The Pines' is a gem of an album and 'Born Sandy Devotional' is a masterpiece. I don't think 'The Black Swan', their last album released in 1989, got the credit it deserved. I'm not sure people knew quite what to make of it. There was pure pop like 'Goodbye Little Boy' and even a gentle foot dipped into the hip-hop explosion back then with the track 'Spinning Top Song'. It was originally conceived as a double album which has now been released as a CD, with the tracks the record company axed from the original release. I don't know if you own it but it is worth having for the tracks 'Too Hot to Move' and 'New Year's Greetings', both classics in my opinon and both show so sadly what we lost when we lost the late great David McComb.
    Great video as usual.

Showing my age. I loved the Church in the early 80s. I saw them several times. Once at a club called Selinas in Sydney and a young Michael Hutchence was in the crowd. We chatted about music and he was lovely. He was a fan. You could tell he had something. I met him a few times after this as we lived in the same suburb and he was into bikes. Sad he died. The Church just put out a single. Have you heard it? I loved the Birthday Party as well and saw them several times. At one gig, there was only about 20 people in the audience. It was a Thursday and they had just gotten back from the UK. They were amazing (and scary live).

A lot of great music as always. Australia has always had great rock music but most of it never made it over here. Before Hoodoo Gurus Brad Shepherd was in Fun Things who made two great singles in 1980 and in 2001 he was in a great band called Monarchs. If you want to explore 70s Punk from Australia look for the Murder Punk vol. 1 and 2 LP/CDs. There is also the Do The Pop 2xCD that has Punk, Post Punk and other styles on it. It includes songs from a few of the bands in your video plus a lot of lesser known stuff. If you like bands that are influenced by Stooges, MC5, NY Dolls and Velvet U. have a listen to Asteroid B612, Brother Brick, Powder Monkeys, Beasts Of Bourbon, Hoss, Seminal Rats, Sunset Strip, Proton Energy Pills, Bored. There;s also the post Radio Birdman bands = Visitors, New Christs, Hitmen and Screaming Tribesmen. In the 1980s there was Eastern Dark and The Johnnys. Far be it for me to try and convert you into a Nick Cave fan but, as you're into Dirty Three, I'nm not sure if you realised that for the last 10 years or more Warren Ellis has been Nick's right hand and the two have co-written all the music. If you don't dig the early bluesy, seedy stuff, check out The Boatman's Call which is very gentle and just sublime but the music he's made more recently with Ellis is something else, my favourite being Push The Sky Away. Also, the Church have a much more recent record, The Hypnogouge, that is really terrific.

Great video and attention to detail. If you're not into the Birthday Party, try The Moodists, Mick Turner (later, Dirty Three) was a member. There was something in the water in Melbourne back then, along with early 'Hunnas' (Hunters & Collectors), that big dirty bass post punk sound but I think they might be a bit more agreeable. While we're at it Dave Grainey (vocalist) some of his 90's stuff I really like. Wonderful video! For a small(ish) country Australia really punches above its weight for interesting music.
I am partially on board with you about The Birthday Party. I saw them live on their last tour when I was in High School and it was one of the most intense and memorable concerts I have seen. But do I listen to them now? Apart from Release The Bats, not really. But I do appreciate the unholy racket they produced.
Nick Cave solo I could again always enjoy in concert, with his deranged preacher schtick but never felt the need to live with his records. Until 2004 and Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus. From that release on I have been pretty devoted.
Great o see Ed Kuepper solo get a mention. He has such a huge catalog it can be intimidating. Everybody's Got To is his stab at a more commercial sound. I do enjoy it but if you dig deeper I am sure you will find more that will get you excited.
Have you listened to The Laughing Clowns? His band between The Saints and solo?
I hope you get around to covering New Zealand music. I would love to see who catches your attention.

Great video! Some real classics there. A couple of Aussie bands that I've been listening to a lot are Tropical Fuck Storm and guitarist Gareth Liddiard's previous band The Drones. Awesome stuff.
Also you really know your stuff so you probably already know this but Warren Ellis from The Dirty Three is in Nick Cave's band. You're not a big fan of Nick Cave so I mention it in case you didn't know.

Ha ha...I am glad you put it out there in the beginning with AC/DC but you caught the tie to the Easybeats. Not addressing it would be leave hole that you would get endless comments on. Saxophone in rock is a delicate thing. Too much, if not done in the right way, can be a deal breaker. Sampled Just Skin and I'm digging it. I am going to have to look for that one. You AM I, hell yeah! Love the track Berlin Chair but I don't have anything by them. Celibate Rifles, Hunters and Collectors, Sunnyboys, Ogurs, and the Dirty Three are new to me. I will have to check them out. I am totally with you on Amyl & The Sniffers. I love that band. Love that you dug into DCD a bit further. Did you pick up Toward The Within by them? I have fond memories of Crowded House and INXS. The later of which would be one of my favorite Aussie bands. Silverchair, I have Frogstomp and Freak Show but I didn't go beyond those two records. I will have to give Diorama a listen. So as we got to the end, I was wondering who would take the top spot...I wasn't sure if it was going to be the Go Betweens or the band you selected. Nice Choice. I hope Intervention Records continues with their reissues. I love Starfish and Priest=Aura but I still want to check out Seance. Loved seeing you on camera once again ;)

Hey Paul. TGIF! Definitely TGIF! Ha, yeah, even though I would have preferred to leave AC/DC out altogether as they aren't really my thing, the tie with the Easybeats and how big they are...they did deserve a mention. That's really awesome that you already knew about You Am I! Love their 90s albums the most.
I don't have Toward the Within by DCD yet. I'm glad I was able to give you a shoutout for introducing them to me as I really have grown to love them even more the past year. I've been heavily into their 80s stuff the past month.
I think you would really love Dirty Three. Incredible musicians.
And yes, give Diorama by Silverchair a sample. It's really a magnificent album that doesn't sound like their earlier stuff.
Seance is a top album by the Church. Sort of a transition album for them.
I'm loving those Intervention reissues, too. They really do a fantastic job. Catch up with you on IG soon!

Hi Hanna, I've stopped the vid just a few seconds in to play a little game. 😃 I'm gonna guess that your list includes my own fave Aussie bands. So......let's see if you like Radio Birdman, The Scientists, The Died Pretty, Hoodoo Gurus and The Saints (OK.....The Saints is a spoiler 'cause of you holding a Saints album......) Alright - on with the video and let's see how we do!
