- Setting up the the Hexamid tarp w/ storm doors. A new tarp for me weighing in at 6.1 oz w/ stuff sack. Setting it up with the Sea to Summit mesh net and also my Borah Bivy. The reg MLD solemid net tent works with it. Just ask them to make you the old version.
I have the bugnet I have the carbon stakes I have the polycryo ground sheet I have the amsteel guylines and tensioners

After looking into it, I’m curious now to see if the six moon designs serenity bug that would work with the hexamid Pocket tarp with doors
If you are using a sleeping bag, a headnet should be all you need. And maybe a cap or something to keep the headnet away from the face - unless you are a side sleeper, and the hood on the sleeping bag is big enough to keep the headnet away... I heard tarp and hammock fans talk about it, so i tried it with my Hilleberg "Bivanorak", and im sold..! Im a side sleeper, and prefer to lay with my arm under my pillow/head. The Hilleberg shelter is the only solution i know that will allow for this, except tents; which are usually a hassle to find a place to set it up... I LOVE that the Bivanorak can be set up on somewhat narrow trails! But it definitely has some learning curve, and condensation needs to be minimized by using sleeping bags/quilts that are not too warm. At least i believe this will be enough. Need more testing to say for sure... If this is the case, then the Hilleberg Bivanorak will be the KING of ultralight shelters IMO! It takes very little space in the backpack, and - if you are a side sleeper - you dont really need a tarp if you use some trees for rain cover. Id still bring a small 1x1,45m tarp ($5 on ebay), which will be used as a groundsheet if i dont need it as raincover.
it does. I bought the SMD serenity for my deschutes, and have later used it w my hexamid tarp also. it is SMALL. my 25' wide pad fits, but that is it. I only use it in deep august bug season.i am a side/stomach sleeper, so the net touching my face only mildly annoys me.
Instead of that big bug bivy, you could try just a headnet. I never tried it with a sleeping bag, but at least it works really good with my Hilleberg Bivanorak.
It works but just doesn’t have the protection. Especially from spiders. I’ve gotten a viscous wolf spider bite before !
@@Bluehathiker Spiders seek heat, thats for sure. I got several tarantulas in the past, and they really like the heat of the hand, and will repeatedly seek electrical outlets (which im guessing is slightly hotter than the surroundings) if they are allowed to wander around the house.
As long as the headnet is sealed around the sleeping bag, and you are maybe wearing a cap or something to keep it up and away from the face, then it should work. Mine got bungy straps that go underneath my arms to keep it shut around the edges, and i use it on the outside of the hood of the Bivanorak, which keeps it away from my face (im a side sleeper).
I only tried my headnet once (with plenty of mosqitos and probably 5 spiders and a few ants within half a meter from my sleeping pad), but so far im thoroughly impressed.
wow i just received my Hexamid tarp and planning to do the same like your set up! I have the Borah bivy and nano burnet. In your opinion, which do you prefer?
I prefer the Borah, mainly because it’s easy, adds an extra layer of wind or splash protection, and I can just sit on it when I’m not in it. The nano bug net just hangs from the top and I’m always having to push it out of the way.
Nice review. Did you also consider the MLD bug bivy? I don't either but have been considering one or the other. I've read the Borah has a little more space and I believe it costs some less than the MLD option.
The MLD bivy is great, definitely a little pricier, but it wouldn’t work inside the Hexamid, it’s just too big. Plus the top entry wouldn’t work. I love the Borah bivy, I’ve had it almost two years and have zero complaints.
@@Bluehathiker I have the MLD bug bivy. Why will it not work in the pocket tarp? How much does the borah bug bivy weigh. ?
The MLD is too big/sets up differently, the shape of the tarp and the shape of the MLD bivy aren’t really compatible. It may be doable though with some modifications. The Borah is considerably less expensive.
I think the Borah is around 6oz
@@Bluehathiker ok, thank you for your response. it's very narrow just about 25in. Maybe the height of the net is where it does not work?. The top load is not a problem, you leave it flat until you get into it, still flat on your sleeping pad. Then you hook the head end up after you are in and zipper it up. I have been using it under a flat tarp for about 5 years it's just amazing piece of gear. Sorry to hear it will not pair with the hex tarp I thought I saw a video with someone using it. Anyway, I guess the hexamid tarp is not going to work for me. Thanks again for your info, saved me some problems.
Too ultralight for me. Looks like the bags dry cleaners put over a suit. I have a mid in polyester about 30d.
Bet ya can’t do that with a 40 mph wind.😂
