Very informative, I was disappointed when ZPacks stopped selling the Hexamid solo tarp but you’ve essentially showed how to make one from the pocket tarp.
I'd like to try adding storms doors to a Pocket Tarp and would appreciate knowing more about how you sewed the doors where they overlap at the top. I'm guessing you sewed the short door on first and then the longer door on top of it where they overlap? Was there anything especially tricky about it? Did you have to add any reinforcement fabric to seam where the front main guy line connects? Nice job!
WOW! Thats a really good alternative to the Plexamid tent..! It weighs 29g/1oz more (if you choose the "Hexamid" with doors and the "Serenity Net Tent"), BUT it is also $114 cheaper (or $214 cheaper if you choose the hexamid without doors), and allow you to use it without the "Serenity Net Tent" in the bug free season..! I really like "modular" gear - and that bivvy actually looked really nice inside the Hexamid :P
Thanks for sharing this. I like the modifications you made. I just received a pocket tarp and you've given me some ideas for similar modifications to mine.
Nice additions to the tarp! You definitely have skills! Just ordered the pocket tarp to replace my Big Agnes scout 2 plat. I am excited to shave off 10oz from my base weight!
Nice video. I have the older Hexmid tarp with a beak , and the older serenity bug net. I've used it for many years, through rain and even a massive hail storm ( video of the hail storm on my channel )
I TOTALLY agree with you. Joe worked with me too. Absolutely a 'for the people' guy. I bought the Hexamid Solo Tent back in 2015 before the 'storm doors' and honestly, the bug netting is what sold me on it. 12 oz total back then. Awesome tent. Zpacks is a great company to work with. Bravo!
I already got the Duplex, but it is still tempting to get another setup when i see that the "Pocket Tarp" (with doors) + the MLD "Superlight solo bivy" (medium size version with DCF floor) only weighs 327g combined..! As the bivy minimize draft and adds warmth to the sleeping bag, it even seems like a decent choice for winter camping :P
Nice setup! I’m planning to extend the vestibules of my plexamid. They’re tiny and wont fit my whole backpack under them. It’s neat to see someone else doing almost the same thing.
Excellent entry/exit add-on work. For my DIY Dyneema tents, I use glue construction providing complete 1/4 inch hem and 1/2 inch lap sealing not requiring waterproofing. My tents include a waterproofed entry/exit zipper and waterproofed vent zipper with mosquito netting and hood. My 4 ft x 8.5 ft x 39 -7/8 in high tent weighs 4.05 ounces.
FULL WEIGHT 18.5 oz with pocket tarp, carbon pole, Nettent. Less than a pound (15.8 oz) if running trekking poles. Rigged up my version today in the backyard. I run it with the mitten hooks attached to the hooks inside the pocket tarp instead of running out to the stakes. This doesn't spread it as wide, but it works fine and can stay connected, sort of like a Hilleberg inner tent. Also I hook the pocket tarp door toggle through the net door toggle loop to help hold up/open the net. Net toggle still works exactly the same to hold the net door open. I run the head end trekking pole lines in a triangle configuration, with line running from rear stake, around pole, through head hook on tarp, around pole again, and down to the front stake. Super stable side to side that way. Definitely double stake the front tie out. Thanks for the inspiration and great video!
Hey Landon. Thanks for this video. Very helpful. When attaching a loop or mittenhook to the inside... do you first add a reinforcement patch... then stick the hook/loop tape to the reinforcement? Is that the best way?
Great video. Was the final weight 5.1 ounces with all of your modifications? If so, with the bivy and groundsheet, you are under 14 ounces total, which is amazing.
This seems to have a more spacious feel than the gatewood. I also like that it stays tight with the Gatewood there is a need to re-tighten the guylines after an hour or two as the nylon “relaxes” or “stretches” out.
It looks like your using a rod as your center stake. This can be done with a trek pole for the combo right? Im curious how they pitch together as the tarp is 47 in and the net is 45 in. Im guessing the tarp has to pitch down to 45 in or so to meet where it meets the pole. Thats my main concern. Im curious how much vestibule space there is and how much space is opposite the vestibule in the middle of the wall side. Does the serenity touch or get too close to the tarp wall in the back-middle (mirror opposite of the doors)?
Nice. Now I'm thinking of doing something similar. It's essentially a very lightweight double wall tent. How long is the longest edge on each of the doors you attached? I have some cuben fibre left over but I'm not sure it's gonna be enough.
Simon's Discoveries I want to say the longest edge is 57-58”. I was able to get it done with 1.5 yards but had to get a little creative with a French feld seam to add a few inches of length to get the corners all the way to the edge. I’ll try to show that more close up on my next videos including this tarp.
Hey there, GREAT video thanks! I have ordered but not yet received the ZP Pocket Tarp. How much does the back and the ORIGINAL beak stick out? Can the beak be made removable with stick on loops and toggles up under the beak a couple inches? Since I do not sew or know of anyone who does can the EDGES be folded and taped? Would you be able to share your notes, designs and dimensions? Thanks.
Thanaphan Duangmong For the storm doors after sketching out the design I laid the trap flat on the ground to measure its true size. I made a template out of paper and taped it to the tarp to test. Then I used the template to cut the DCF to size. I roll hemmed the sides and bottom adding the corner reinforcement. Last I attached the doors with flat/French felled seam and seam taped.
Thanaphan Duangmong Depending on the trip length and weather I rotate the use of SMD serenity net tent, Sea2Summit nano mosquito net, or a bivy. I also recently posted a video with a cuben fiber bathtub ground cloth I made, in that you can see the Sea2Summit nano net option.
Are there any videos on youtube were I can learn how to sow on those patches. I really like this set up but I first need to learn how to sow so I can add those patches for the NetTent.
I thought ZPacks pkt tarp was avail with vestibule door (alternative to simpler peak-overhang model)?? In which case you would have the doors. As with all these configs and gear choices, there are always trade-offs, cost vs weight vs comfort vs flexibility. These are interesting ideas and options. Thanks for the vid!!
Zpacks just started offering the pocket tarp with doors about a month ago. Prior to the model they are offering now the hexamid solo tarp was the one with storm doors but it has been discontinued for a while now.
nice video, i'm looking into a light weight shaped tarp and the hexamid pocket tarp is high on my list. so after 1 year 4 months are you still using this tarp? impressions still the same?
It can be set up with a shorter pole but that will limit the air flow under the tarp and possibly lead to increased condensation on the interior walls.
I thought i was stupid or crazy thinking i could get away with the zp pocket tarp with doors + smd serenity combo.Totally didnt expect to see anyone else try the exact same combo. Total weight of the two without stakes is 17oz. I want the versatility of being able to make a quick tarp to bunker down in in the unpredictable cdt this year in case of a day storm plus use as a full two wall tent for better dryness than a one wall. Plus get to have a full view for stargazing in good weather. Plus 160 cheaper than a duplex.
I used a French/Flat feld seam. Then taped. I find sewing Cuben to be pretty moderate as far as difficulty is concerned, much easier to work with than sil fabric. I am currently working on a change for this setup, making a new inner net that is symmetrical. I will post a video of it when it’s complete. Thanks for watching
Cold, cold wind, rain and snow easily penetrates the interior of your tarp. Little room for your backpack thus requiring a dry bag during rain and snow. Set-up at ground level you gain significant warmth. Without a zippered entry/exit and vent to control internal temp, you've got what you've got. Don't forget the critters, flying and grounded. I recall being in a tent when a furry unknown creature lay along side me on the outside of the tent - it's a real world out there.
I like ZPacks designs, but their sewing/craftsmanship is absolutely atrocious. For the amount of money they charge, they should be putting out professional results. Pretty much every other vendor who deals in DCF products knows what they're doing behind a sewing machine.
Scott Kilcoyne Sorry for any confusion this may have caused but on zpacks website this tarp is called the Hexamid Pocket Tarp. Hexamid because of its shape, Pocket because it will fit in a cargo pocket, Tarp because... LOL you get it. I included a link so you can verify where I pulled that information for the title. Thanks! It could be used for that but i would probably use a flat tarp for something like that.
Hello, can it be setting up by a shorter pole? I am a trail runner and I use 110cm fixed length poles so I'm wondering this.
It can be set up with a shorter pole but that will limit the air flow under the tarp and possibly lead to increased condensation on the interior walls.
Don't apologize for the sound of crunching snow and ice underfoot. That's better than walking through muddy ground caused by rains! LOL
How are the two tie outs you stuck on working? They staying stuck?
Greg Williams yes! They seem to have just become part of the tarp, no signs of weakness.
Torn between a zPacks pocket tarp and a 7x9 flat tarp (I see you have both). Any preference between the two?
