- I recently acquired a Zpacks Pocket Tarp w/ Doors, a bathtub floor, and a Sea to Summit Net Tent. This video shows some of the mods I did to make this system work better in my opinion. Hopefully you'll find it useful too.

Great video. I just got back from a hike on the AT. This time I got rain with my Pocket Tarp. I didn't experience the floor extending past the tent. (I did have that happen with my SolPlex years ago, but that was because of uneven ground. My mattress slid down and pushed the tub beyond the tent. I had an inch of water!) Last night, I got splash at the vestibule. I need to work on getting the doors more tight.
It's a tricky balancing act. Truth be told, shortly after making this video I went back to the SMD Skyscape Trekker. I'll take the 1lb weight penalty if it means I'll stay dry. Others have had success with this setup so if you can hack it more power to you.
I opted for a Borah Gear DCF Bug Bivvy. Stuck a couple of those loops to the tarp ceiling to support it. That way I don't have to worry about that floppy bathtub floor.
How is that working out?
I have the same bivy. I'm thinking about using it this way.
Nice setup and video! I have the one with no doors and did some mods that made it amazing. Used it on the AT for section hikes and it went through a lot of heavy rain no problem.
Thank you
I think the large bathtub is too big for this tarp. I got mine as regular size.
This really makes the most sense that a smaller bathtub forced the shock cord to work and lift the sides. Thanks to you and Deb.
Why do you feel the plus was too big?
Im thinking of getting this shelter to use with my Hilleberg "Bivanorak", but i would probably just use a headnet instead of that big bugnet. A headnet is also really nice to have outside the shelter. Not really sure if i need a tarp with the Bivanorak though, as i read a comment from a person who just used it beneath trees with low branches to get shelter from most of the rain. I also sleep on the side, so the big hood should keep me dry.
I used the same setup on the PCT. The Solo Plus bathtub is just too large for the Hexamid. Recommend trading down to the regular size bathtub.
Why do you feel it was too big?
@@wolfeadventures The solo+ footprint is larger than the tarp. When it rains, the bathtub collects water.
@@Meyer0656 Ah, that's not good. Thanks.
I have the exact same setup. I could not believe what a poor job Zpacks did on the bathtub. It's really more like an expensive groundsheet. I used this set up on the Maroon Bells Loop this summer. I also tried making some adjustments to the S2S bug net to get rid of the sagging sections. I think I might make more sense to just use a head net than the S2S but net but not totally sure. I might make some more adjustments for this summer. However, I did just buy the newest 2021 Gossamer Gear - The One. it only weights 17.7 oz for the tent and about another 4 oz for the steaks all the other pieces.
I agree with you on the floor. That was pretty disappointing. I spent a few hours fussing over how to set up the tent before my first trip and thought "well, maybe I'll just figure something out in the field". Nope. The mods in this video helped, but at best it's still a hack.
I'll probably go back to my Skyscape Trekker. I'll miss the fact that I lost a whole pound, but the Trekker is just so easy to set up. There's plenty of room inside that thing. Also I won't have to worry about the floor sliding around to the point that I'm now creating a funnel for the rain. They made a DCF version of it once, and from what I remember it didn't work out very well. Maybe someday down the road they'll give it another shot.
I see others put the bathtub floor hook end thru the tarp loops and then use the barrel toggle to pull the floor up. Seems to alleviate the floor sagging issue. My tarp and tub floor arrive soon. I’ll try it both ways and will try to remember to update this comment.
After all of that, should just go with the solo plex tent
Now defunct Oookworks put pegging points and stiffeners in each corner of their bathtub groundsheet. It works and is what zPacks should have done. They’ve spoiled their product by saving weight. I ended up with a sodden Tilley hat because of the problem you identified but the untidy appearance of the zPacks groundsheet annoys me more.
Oookworks has a new owner and is back in business. Hopefully someone as skilled a Sean, but without the health and service issues...
@@tullochgorum6323 : That’s interesting. I’ll keep an eye out for new products.
Its not the bathtub John its just a miss match the Width at ends:of the solo plus is 42 inches the pocket tarp is 30 inches, the plus is a tad longer to
Have you added a guy out patch to give it more headroom?
I did not. It wouldn't be hard though. All you would need is a DCF loop sticky, some cord, and maybe a pole(s).
Where do you purchase the tape/loops
Zpacks sells them on their site. Look for "Stick on Loops" on their website.
What is the weight now with mods and Net?
Pocket Tarp with Doors - 162g / 5.7 oz
Solo-Plus Bathtub Floor - 105g / 3.7 oz (groundsheet loops included)
Sea to Summit Net-Tent - 80g / 3.0 oz
Total : 347g / 12.2 oz
Edit : I should mention that the weight I mention in the video is with everything else. For these items, your mileage may vary.
Carbon Fiber Pole: 74g / 2.6 oz
Small-Plus Stuff Sack : 7g / 0.2 oz
Ground Hog Stakes (8 + 1 extra) : 144g / 5.1 oz
Tent Stake Bag : 2g / 0.1 oz
Polycro Groundsheet : 54g / 1.9 oz
Overall Total : 628g / 22.2 oz / 1 lb 6.2 oz
@@teddgram Are you sure the pocket tarp only weighs 5.2 oz?
@@juliemitchell4286 I had replied to this post, but somehow it doesn't appear here.
I adjusted the above post. I'm guessing I had mixed up my pre and post weights.

The original weights were almost spot on from what was on Zpacks website at the time. I see now the tarp weighs more, which suggests there was a design change.
Isn’t this kind of re-creating the plexamid?
Yes and no. At the time, they didn't offer a Plexamid. Also, the goal was to have a double wall shelter, where the Plexamid is a single wall shelter.
