There’s tons of people with barely any pictures of when their parents were younger. Myself included. I wouldn’t recognize them today even with the few pictures I do have.
As many have stated throughout the comments about never having seen a pic of their dad when younger, you do have a point in the fact that man did peak in high school and was very good looking. I love this movie, but after just watching your commentary I realized if I was the mom I would totally think Zach Enron was my husbands son from someone else, Ned was covering it up and my estranged husband had disappeared rather than own up to having a kid with another woman.
Yeah, plus the fact that nobody else saw it. They live in the same town with all the same people and no family or friends recognize. Even their own kids never saw photos of their dad when he was young? But people still look the same as adults when they were teenager
This movie proved that Zac could be more than Troy Bolton. The scene where he gives the speech to the health class about safe sex, and later during the court scene, always makes me teary eyed.
It’s so funny to me that Sterling Knight was exactly 20 years old when this movie was released, so his “this looks like a 20 year old with CGI” was not wrong
They should do an aftermath of the movie where the characters cope with being deceived by him: the daughter, distraught, sits in the therapist's chair crying, afraid that she'll accidentally fall in love with her father again. The son is in shambles because it took a major magical event for his dad to finally notice him, and now that his parents are back together, he lost his best friend.
That’s actually depressing now that I think about it and it would’ve been interesting to see that as a sequel or they could’ve showed it at the end of the movie as an epilogue
I feel like Zac Efron is as close to the male equivalent of Megan Fox as we've gotten. He deserve more attention than the superficial appearance stuff he gets.

I couldn't agree more about Leslie Mann and Zac Efron and how they worked so well together. it would be pretty cool to see them in another movie together now that Zac has even more comedies under his belt.
Apparently, Leslie's daughter Maude, who was 10 at the time, had a huge crush on Zac. When word got out that Leslie and Zac had kissed for a scene, Maude licked Leslie's face because she wanted to taste Zac's spit. It's pretty hilarious, in a cute way! 😂🤣

Like off in the future the son just goes 'whatever happened to Mark,' and his parents get defensive about it and then later on either he or Maggie have a son and the kid grows up to look like 'Mark'(which can happen I know people who are dead ringers for their grandparents), and now the kids think Mark was like Maggie's twin who got given away or something or his parents killed him or something 😆😆😆

I think him running out during the game was his way of giving up the scholarship. Like I think ur right that he could've waited and not thrown his team under the bus there, but it was symbolic of him choosing a future with Scar over a future in basketball. The problem is, the rest of his life he talked about the "what ifs," and it made Scar feel like he regretted his decision. Therefore, that's why we got to the end and he just did it all over again-- he had to show Scar (& realize himself) that it was the right decision back then & it's still the right decision in present time
There’s actually a Korean adaptation of this movie, except instead of a movie, it got turned into a series, it dives a bit more into the character building and development, it does still contain a bit of comedy like any other kdrama, but it does get a bit sentimental and emotional at times, a lot more than the Zac Efron version, i recommend watching it (18 Again), you might also recognize some scene similarities

So to me, the movie always seemed off for the time it was set in. What I’m saying is, even with the D-League he could have made a good earning in the minors playing basketball and raise his kid. Sterling actually auditioned for Troy Bolton but never got the part then he was trying to go to golf one day and Zack’s car was blocking the way or something and he got really pissed off and had a go at him. Then they ended up working together on this movie and became good friends. Also Sterling played Chad Dylan Cooper who is iconic if you ask me😌 he and Demi Lovato had great chemistry.

See this movie actually shows the Oedipus complex well, the daughter really liked him because he treated her how a dad teaches their daughters how they should be treated, with respect, so him talking to her like that makes her feel loved and respected how Dad's love their daughter's. No one loves us more than our parents so subconsciously we are searching for that same love. So yes it's creepy but it's also a psychological take (probably done accidentally by these less than poor writers) Edit: I said "no one loves us more than our parents" as a blanket term to use my point I agree not everyone has amazing parents but we grow up either thinking we do or thinking this is the best we are gonna get, I know I have thought that when it came to my parents, but ya, it was just a blanket term to explain how the Oedipus Complex intersects with the movie, I didn't mean to insult or bother anyone by the statement.

Narratology, patterns, tropes… don’t know if Dylan knows what he knows, but he definitely knows a lot. He recognises basic plot devices and knows that the plot will demand A, B and C… he doesn’t need to think that much, because his knowledge lets him just recognise things…

I remember my dad brought me and my little brother to see this movie when it came out in theaters. We were like seven and five. He had no idea what the premise was, so when Zac Efron's daughter started trying to seduce him, my dad panicked and rushed us out of the theater 😂
Oh God, this movie brings up a traumatic memory that was buried LONG ago. Buckle up for a story time: For my dad's 40th birthday, we decided to throw him a surprise party at our house. We needed to get him out of the house for a while to setup, have guests arrive, etc, so my brilliant idea was to take him out for a dinner and movie to kill a few hours. He was kinda going through a midlife crisis at the time and feeling down about getting older, so I thought 17 Again would be the PERFECT movie. A comedy about a middle aged man wanting to relive the glory days of his teenage years, PLUS Zac Efron?? Seemed like a win-win! (Never mind the fact that the movie my dad actually wanted to see was Fast & Furious. For context, I was 13 at the time. Zac Efron > fast cars). So, the plan is going great, movie is pretty funny...UNTIL the daughter started trying to AGGRESSIVELY get HER FATHER (Zac) into bed. MORTIFIED doesn't even begin to come close to describing how I felt in that moment sitting next to my dad in this movie theater. This was such a stupid and unnecessary scene in the movie - the entire theater was audibly cringing. The drive back was so freaking awkward, and I'm pretty sure he gave me some lecture about not being a hussy or something to that effect? Anyway, I despise this movie for creating that experience, and now I look up IMDB's Parents Guide for any movie before seeing it with my dad LOL Thank you for doing a commentary on this, Dylan, and forcing me to relive this trauma :')

i'm kind of a new zefron stan, but something i've noticed and idk if many people have noticed too, but both of those films are from the same director, Burr Steers!! I think he's one of the directors who's known how to get some of the most amazing performances from him, would love to see them both work again sometime soon!

nah it's never brought up. only his wife thinks it's weird. I have never seen pics of my dad when he was young. Only when i was like 22/23 i think (there weren’t many photos) and idk where they put them. Most of them were still at my grandparents as well my dad never took them with him
I know Sterling Knight from Starstruck, which Dylan may not have watched yet. See, in Starstruck, it is a metaphor of Dylan's story line. Dylan is a UA-cam star instead of a pop star, and he will watch Starstruck in order to understand what his future holds.

Actually the coach not recognizing him makes A LOT of sense. He’s been teaching for 20 years and has likely had hundreds of students. I’m an after school teacher and hardly remembered the face of a student I had in my classroom 5 years ago.
The coach not recognizing him is logical given how many kids he has taught, it's unlikely he'd vividly remember the face of one of them. The kids is a bit harder to justify, but maybe they just never felt inclined to look at old pictures of him. The wife taking that long to recognize him is the main problem, she has been looking at that face for 20 years.
What I find so funny about Zac Efron's career around high school musical is he goes from being in a musical while also having to play basketball, to being in a movie about basketball and a movie that's a musical. They really type-casted him for a few years. Recently except for the Greatest Showman, and a few others he's in R rated movies where the bro type character.

There's also a 2000s version of this movie called "Seventeen Again" starring the Mowry siblings (Tia, Tamara, and Tahj) that no one ever talks about since this movie came out. it's actually really good, and it'd be interesting to see what you think of the contrast (which is NOT a recommendation, but a bringing of awareness to another film lol)
a k-drama remade this story and its just sooo enjoyable! its called '18 again'. all the characters are developed. the daughter's character is wayy better there. she's a really strong person who doesn't take shit from anyone. the mom also takes a long time to forgive the dad. also talks about how difficult it is for a divorced woman to navigate life with her kids. anybody who has time should really check it out! its great.
I am SO glad he did this movie today. I was having the worst week and I absolutely love this movie. I also love Dylan. And both of them together??? Perfection.

The son is in shambles because it took a major magical event for his dad to finally notice him, and now that his parents are back together, he lost his best friend.

I think him running out during the game was his way of giving up the scholarship. Like I think ur right that he could've waited and not thrown his team under the bus there, but it was symbolic of him choosing a future with Scar over a future in basketball. The problem is, the rest of his life he talked about the "what ifs," and it made Scar feel like he regretted his decision. Therefore, that's why we got to the end and he just did it all over again-- he had to show Scar (& realize himself) that it was the right decision back then & it's still the right decision in present time

There’s actually a Korean adaptation of this movie, except instead of a movie, it got turned into a series, it dives a bit more into the character building and development, it does still contain a bit of comedy like any other kdrama, but it does get a bit sentimental and emotional at times, a lot more than the Zac Efron version, i recommend watching it (18 Again), you might also recognize some scene similarities

Sterling actually auditioned for Troy Bolton but never got the part then he was trying to go to golf one day and Zack’s car was blocking the way or something and he got really pissed off and had a go at him. Then they ended up working together on this movie and became good friends. Also Sterling played Chad Dylan Cooper who is iconic if you ask me😌 he and Demi Lovato had great chemistry.

See this movie actually shows the Oedipus complex well, the daughter really liked him because he treated her how a dad teaches their daughters how they should be treated, with respect, so him talking to her like that makes her feel loved and respected how Dad's love their daughter's. No one loves us more than our parents so subconsciously we are searching for that same love. So yes it's creepy but it's also a psychological take (probably done accidentally by these less than poor writers)
Edit: I said "no one loves us more than our parents" as a blanket term to use my point I agree not everyone has amazing parents but we grow up either thinking we do or thinking this is the best we are gonna get, I know I have thought that when it came to my parents, but ya, it was just a blanket term to explain how the Oedipus Complex intersects with the movie, I didn't mean to insult or bother anyone by the statement.

Oh God, this movie brings up a traumatic memory that was buried LONG ago. Buckle up for a story time:
For my dad's 40th birthday, we decided to throw him a surprise party at our house. We needed to get him out of the house for a while to setup, have guests arrive, etc, so my brilliant idea was to take him out for a dinner and movie to kill a few hours. He was kinda going through a midlife crisis at the time and feeling down about getting older, so I thought 17 Again would be the PERFECT movie. A comedy about a middle aged man wanting to relive the glory days of his teenage years, PLUS Zac Efron?? Seemed like a win-win! (Never mind the fact that the movie my dad actually wanted to see was Fast & Furious. For context, I was 13 at the time. Zac Efron > fast cars).
So, the plan is going great, movie is pretty funny...UNTIL the daughter started trying to AGGRESSIVELY get HER FATHER (Zac) into bed. MORTIFIED doesn't even begin to come close to describing how I felt in that moment sitting next to my dad in this movie theater. This was such a stupid and unnecessary scene in the movie - the entire theater was audibly cringing. The drive back was so freaking awkward, and I'm pretty sure he gave me some lecture about not being a hussy or something to that effect?
Anyway, I despise this movie for creating that experience, and now I look up IMDB's Parents Guide for any movie before seeing it with my dad LOL Thank you for doing a commentary on this, Dylan, and forcing me to relive this trauma :')

@Day I'm glad people can at least laugh about it! Lol and yeah, I was going through puberty at the time, so there were quite a few comments/talks of this nature (generally leaning towards the misogynistic side). Michelle Trachtenberg's entire character really helped with all that 🙃

As an old Zac Efron stan at a young age, I definitely feel like 17 again and Charlie St. Cloud was his most underrated movies he’s acted in 😭 I’m so glad there’s so many people especially the troublemakers who agree on my opinion lol

i'm kind of a new zefron stan, but something i've noticed and idk if many people have noticed too, but both of those films are from the same director, Burr Steers!! I think he's one of the directors who's known how to get some of the most amazing performances from him, would love to see them both work again sometime soon!

I don’t think it’s that far fetched. Think of the 1989 Mike O’Donell and 1990’s Matthew Perry. They look kinda similar.
haven’t watched this in a long time, but did the kids ever acknowledge that he looked like a younger version of their dad? like did they hide away all pictures of them when they were younger? or did they just not know at all…maybe it’s just me, but i would be able to recognize if someone looked like my parents and i would question whether or not we are related.
nah it's never brought up. only his wife thinks it's weird. I guess you could argue that they don't have a great relationship with him and might just not have seen old photos for a long time. or that they wouldn't entertain that thought regardless because of the boundaries of reality (wife's friend comments on this). in a meta way it makes sense because Matthew Perry looks nothing like Zac Efron but I guess it's kinda asking for a suspension of disbelief lol
i have seen 2 or maybe 3 pictures of my dad in his 20s. and im not sure at what age did i saw them. also the colors were a little off, i think live and with a different haircut it can be possible for someone to not realize. (also that is the last thing you will imagine, come on)
i just like to think they thought that kid looked a lot like the dad and it was truly a coincidence

I have never seen pics of my dad when he was young. Only when i was like 22/23 i think (there weren’t many photos) and idk where they put them. Most of them were still at my grandparents as well my dad never took them with him

Actually the coach not recognizing him makes A LOT of sense. He’s been teaching for 20 years and has likely had hundreds of students. I’m an after school teacher and hardly remembered the face of a student I had in my classroom 5 years ago.

The coach not recognizing him is logical given how many kids he has taught, it's unlikely he'd vividly remember the face of one of them.
The kids is a bit harder to justify, but maybe they just never felt inclined to look at old pictures of him.

What I find so funny about Zac Efron's career around high school musical is he goes from being in a musical while also having to play basketball, to being in a movie about basketball and a movie that's a musical. They really type-casted him for a few years. Recently except for the Greatest Showman, and a few others he's in R rated movies where the bro type character.
And then there's that movie where he's Ted Bundy. Guess he finally broke through the casting block with that one.

You calling Zac Efron 'Effie' is adding minutes to my life with the sheer joy it causes.
There's also a 2000s version of this movie called "Seventeen Again" starring the Mowry siblings (Tia, Tamara, and Tahj) that no one ever talks about since this movie came out. it's actually really good, and it'd be interesting to see what you think of the contrast (which is NOT a recommendation, but a bringing of awareness to another film lol)

Dylan’s facial expressions whenever the daughter and zach came on the screen are priceless
a k-drama remade this story and its just sooo enjoyable! its called '18 again'. all the characters are developed.
the daughter's character is wayy better there. she's a really strong person who doesn't take shit from anyone. the mom also takes a long time to forgive the dad. also talks about how difficult it is for a divorced woman to navigate life with her kids.
anybody who has time should really check it out! its great.
