As a high school teacher - I can definitely attest that most 8-13 year old “kids” are sooooo switched on. They are basically witty, mini-sized adults and have very outgoing, individualised personalities, that are heightened even more by hormones. They can be full-on adults and then in a split second change to puberty driven teens who say/think the craziest, intense or insightful things. Having just 4-5 of these kinds of kids in a class of 28-30 is basically just controlled chaos at the best of times LOL. Junior high school is pretty funny and most teachers have to wear a poker face for 90% of class time. They also absorb EVERYTHING like sponges, so the synapses in their brains are just firing off 100% of the time and they mimic/mock adults like parrots.

@Gary Baldi from personal experience as a mum of now 20-22 year olds, an Aunt to 5 teenagers aged 10-15 and a teacher of 11-18 year olds for the past 22 years, I can definitely tell you that 12 year olds often speak better and more polished than most 18+ adults. Of course writers are involved as they produce the script, but young people are so quick witted and say very perceptive one liners like they’re comic geniuses :)

All she's claiming is that kids are a lot smarter and well spoken than they may seem, and you're accusing her of making it a competition and calling her desperate and weird. You're kind of being a dick for no reason other than you're completely misinterpreting what she was saying.

Saw some horrific things, found some horrific things that made me uncomfy but met some people who'd actually shown me how reckless some people are and subconsciously made me mature the fck up lol (plus some nice people too). Listen, I get where Dylan is coming from with the kid being 'too witty' but as someone with a significant amount of trauma, the kid's wittiness and matureness is pretty accurate to my experience.
As many people in the comments have pointed out, kids with trauma often grow up faster to deal with the situation they're in. Plus, 12-year-olds aren't 'little'- people often group 8-year-olds and 12-year-olds together when they're not the same. 12-year-olds (especially traumatised ones) are often self-aware due to their early matureness.

The point was to contrast Dylan’s expectation that kids should be more “dumbed down” in media (especially in this conversation about a kid with trauma) and the reality that children with trauma MATURE faster. Not “get wittier.” I agree with the rest of your comment as an analysis on Dylan’s intentions with his rant, except for that self-serving assumption about a person you don’t know who’s already admitted to having suffered a lot of trauma as a kid.

Ay, you seriously underrate that kid. I was eleven, in tenth grade when I figured out I had depression. My parents didn't have any sort of mad mental health knowledge (I don't think they cared or even believed in it). I understood that I was also emotionally repressed because I was left to take care of my siblings when I was four and that I had to be their parent figure at that age, giving up my own childhood. Hence why I believed I was simply emotionless for most of my life. Give the kid some credit. Dang.

Having the child mirror Ryan Reynolds iconic humour was a good comedy angle, having him play a regular child would not be fun for the audience, the fact that he's so much like Ryan was great for marketing too and since he is that young and sarcastic in real life he's the example of yeah kids this smart exist.
The kid being able to read him so well psychologically actually fits in with one of the themes of the movie which is older ryan reynolds healing his wounded inner child from his traumatic past through this experience, it's actually such an important thing to be reflected as people tend to only learn in therapy how to take care of their inner child wnd learn about what he/she was neglected. Not that the movie goes in that deep but that would be the reasoning for the kid's genius empath quality. To have his untainted child self tell him the truth is very clever and sometimes kids know better than the parents these days because they have better understanding whereas parents just have the toxic cycles they learned from their parents. The movie reminded me in a way of the disney movie The Kid where Bruce Willis meets his younger self and in turn has to work through his childhood trauma to find himself again, and also About Time with the father thing at the end. It was wonderfully done but I do agree some scenes/acting didn't come off as organic but I find that with A Lot of netflix movies, they lack something the old movies had, a few extra scenes would have been goood too
