- Ever wondered what is involved in lifting a Y62 with HBMC suspension. There are a few ways to go about it but for this video (first of the Master Class series) we see how this is completed using the OnTrack lower control arm lift which is installed and narrated by the legend Steve Allan at our workshop at 4x4 DNA

Being a mechanic by trade and knowing how tuff some things are to get done, I really appreciate how calm and old school Steve is. He is actually the definition of a real mechanic not like most these days that are purely and simply oil filter spinners. My dealers favourite saying these days is CNF. Could not fault at time of testing even though I road tested the vehicle with them and showed them the problem. This video was so refreshing.

A couple of takeaways from this video:
1. There are Dash install videos where you think, ‘I could do that’... this is not one of them! 😆
2. This is a very involved process, not a spring and shock swap!
3. It’s obvious that Steve Allan is legit and I think it’s worth the interstate trip to get this done by the master!

I managed to install the lift in my S5 without removing the power steering pump, I was able to jack engine up slightly to give enough clearance.
I also drilled out the rear control arm bush rubbers that gave access to the bush sleeve which i was able to use a dremel to carefully split then tap out. I have a hoist at home but it was consumed with another car so did the lift install on the garage floor.

Mate, this was a great video in understanding how the lift is done. Just ordered my 23 foot full off-road caravan, so I will be speaking to you guys soon about a 2” lift plus GVM upgrade.
I fitted this kit to my series 5 on the garage floor and it was an absolute fight all the way. The fitting instructions were terrible and when I phoned On Track for assistance, the guy who answered couldn't have been more disinterested - almost rude. I didn't want to cut the front K frame bolt so I supported the frame, took out the bolts and temporarily replaced them with the much longer bushing bolts. Then when I lowered the K frame down (only just enough to slide the bolt out), it came down square. On re-installation, the long bolts acted as guides and the frame slid nicely straight up into place. I put the K frame bolt back in the opposite direction (why Nissan don't do this in the first place is beyond me). On the upside however, everything ended up fine and the wheel aligner had no trouble getting all the geometry right. Alarm bells should have gone off when I couldn't find anyone in my area willing to do the job. Anyway it's done, it turned out a success and I achieved what I wanted but if you're considering doing this job yourself at home, you'll need a mate, a lot of special tools and a ton of patience.

Very well explained along with visuals to get a good understanding of what goes on to achieve end result, the front suspension lower control arm extended lower shock mount I get so to be able to leave alone the shock itself BUT you loose a lot of compression in the shock which is exactly what you need with extra weight, yes you still have the same amount of articulation so realistically putting the correct spring in for extra weight to achieve ride height as well as ratio of compression and top out ( Droop ) is the best way to go, don't forget the original spring will sage because it's not designed to carry the extra weight.

Now i gotta buy some of them extended bump stops, theyve been sold out the last few times i thought of it.

The only thing that doesn’t quite sit right to me with an HBMC lift is that you’re stuck with the factory shocks which...hopefully they’re ok compared to the quality aftermarket options?
Also, I see you have a light and medium front lift option, how is that load difference achieved? By disconnecting the hbmc line and replacing the coil spring?
Light and medium is just a taller or shorter bracket to allow for spring sag with extra weight. Coil lift is another whole game with the Y62, but possible
how do I change the bushing of the HBMC shock absorber. is it doable and if soo can it be done without removing the shock absorber ?

Hi, I'm from Peru and I have a Y62 and my front spring broke, I want to know how to change it.
Damn I wish this vid was out a week ago - just fitted this with a mate, front went well along with rear springs and bags but decided to pay my reputable mechanic to do the bushes given the rear ball joint difficulty... He told me to never give them a job like that again 😄. David, could you please reinforce your message from an earlier video about right spring rates? I got medium springs (200kg constant) without a rear bar and am sitting at 620 eyebrow heights... too much for alignment to work so am either up for new, softer springs or only 10 thou out of new 35s

Jesus i just put a deposit down for a y62 and watching this gives me anxiety about doing a lift. Looks like an real expensive pain in the ass compared to every other car made. I bet the labour costs more than the lift itself
The HBMC system seems like a bitch of a thing, is it really worth it or a unnecessary gimmick?
It’s not for off-road, it’s more of a high baller city driving thing, which is what these cars were made for, on road people moving in city and on highway
So in other words pay a professional to install your lift.. lol
