I´m hooked to your channel. Sharing the videos with all my friends. Keep on the good work. And if you can do a video about Roxy Music album or song Avalon will be great. One of the best!
I stumbled upon your channel a couple of months ago and I absolutely love it! I will become a Patreon supporter as soon as I can. BTW, I am creating a Spotify playlist based on your two HIdden 80s Gems videos and some other suggestions from the comments.
Professor of Rock: What are your thoughts on the differences between Rod Stewart’s version/video of ‘Some Guys Have All The Luck’ and Robert Palmer’s version/video of that iconic song?
I wouldn't say these are forgotten - most made a massive impression on me. In the 80's as kids many of us music lovers rode our bikes and listened to / watched and purchased music. And there was so much music! I mowed lawns and did yard work just to fund my music purchases. Today kids jump on TikTok or wait for the latest video game. They don't seem to be swimming in music like us.
Funny how "I Know There's Something Going On" was all over album rock radio in 1983, even though those stations never touched ABBA with a ten foot pole, even when they were playing rock. It was almost as if the CEOs of the programming services didn't know she'd been one of ABBA's lead singers. Frida's hit wasn't all that different than some of the songs on The Visitors.
This has become one of the best UA-cam channels! Professor, your passion for music is just incredible and the way you present each topic reels anyone in who watches your content.
Completely agree. This guy has switched me back on to proper music, I’ve gotten rid of most of my music streaming speakers and got myself a vinyl turntable again, love it!
"Crazy" by Icehouse, "Secret Separation" by the Fixx, "What About Me" by Moving Pictures, "Forever Live and Die" by OMD, and "Kayleigh" by Marillion. "Reptile" by the Church is amazing. One of a kind composition.
Don't Disturb This Groove - The System Never Surrender - Corey Hart I've Been In Love Before - Crowded House The Ghost In You - The Psychedelic Furs Tender Love - Force MD's
I'd forgotten Corey Hart had a hit other than Sunglasses at Night. I'd totally forgotten about I've Been in Love Before...I always thing of Something so Strong when Crowded House are brought up...seems like I liked a few other songs by them, too. Love everything by the Furs...you're right, that one doesn't get the love it deserves. Not familiar with the other two by title, but judging by the other three, I will go check them out now.
Best rock Duo of all time Hall & Oates. Also, best harmonizing vocals any band. I didn't realize 21 hits but I'm not surprised because I have 2-cd greatest hits of theirs.
Captain Of Her Heart - Double Alive And Kicking - Simple Minds Eyes Without A Face - Billy Idol Always Something There To Remind Me - Naked Eyes Back In The High Life Again - Steve Winwood Only The Lonely - The Motels Cuts Like A Knife - Bryan Adams Saved By Zero - The Fixx Love Plus One - Haircut 100 Ah! Leah! - Donnie Iris Find Your Way Back - Starship Don’t Shed A Tear - Paul Carrack Love Will Find A Way - Yes The One I Love - REM Sirius/Eye In The Sky - Alan Parsons Project Flesh For Fantasy - Billy Idol Wasted On The Way - CSN Miss Sun - Boz Skaggs In The Shape Of A Heart - Jackson Browne Crazy - Icehouse Ship Of Fools - Robert Plant The Flame - Cheap Trick Stepping Out - Joe Jackson
I think I love the comments section almost as much as the channel, no comments about how the music of today is rubbish compared to older generations, just people who love music and want to champion their love like the Professor, and I'm finding a lot of new music by bands that unfortunately I had never heard of or given much time to. So thank you to the Professor and all of his students!
@@marcofalzone6469 I can remember those 3 UK releases. I thought it was going to make the top 40 on its second one but it didn't. Third time out, I thought it's got to make it this time and it did. Great song that haven't heard in quite a while.
Great video! My 5 overlooked 80's songs: 1. Love Is in Control-Donna Summer 2. Life's What You Make It- Talk Talk 3. Take Your Time- SOS Band 4. I Found It (Just Got Lucky) Joe Boxers. 5. We Close Our Eyes- Go West
The Kinks - Come Dancing Jason And The Scorchers - White Lies The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary The Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way The Bangles - Going Down To Liverpool
Kiss On My List, for me, is *the* perfect pop song. The rhythm guitar and chord progression is hypnotic, the bass has funk, the bridge is something that lifts you up to the final chorus where Daryl’s vocals are flawless.
So glad I found this channel. Here are my five forgotten 80s classics: Der Kommissar by ATF; A Girl Like You by the Smithereens; Look of Love by ABC; Turn to You by the Go-Gos; and Breakout by Swing Out Sister.
"Say it Isn't So" is one of my absolute favorite H&O songs, great choice. Some forgotten 80's hits that come to mind: "Givin' it Up For Your Love" - Delbert McClinton...it was a top 10 pop hit in 1980, so the 80's had yet to become what we now know they became, and it's more like a throwback to an earlier time. It's a song that straddles a lot of boundaries...it's kinda country-ish, but also kinda soulful and funky. You can dance to it, but it's not really a dance record. It's just a great, forgotten hit that you never hear or think about anymore. "Shame on the Moon" - Bob Seger. Kind of like "Say it Isn't So" is the huge H&O hit that time forgot, the same can be said for "Shame on the Moon". Huge hit at the time, but it just kind of faded away. I'm not a big Bob Seger fan, but I always liked this one. "Voyeur" - Kim Carnes. Quintessential 80's. Despite how huge "Bette Davis Eyes" was, I always felt that Kim Carnes was a bit of a fish out of water trying to do the synth-pop New Wave-lite thing, when she was at heart a country-pop-folk singer/songwriter...but this was the exception. Her voice works perfectly, she really sells it. Not sure why it wasn't a bigger hit, I thought it was fantastic for what it was. "Got to Be There" - Chaka Khan. Michael Jackson had the original hit with it in 1972, but he was just a kid when he recorded it, so it comes off as basically a bubblegum-soul novelty. The song deserved a serious, adult treatment, and that's exactly what Chaka Khan did in 1982. Her performance is amazing. "Love Will Save the Day" - Whitney Houston. Another case, like H&O and Bob Seger, of a superstar just having so many great hits in their catalog that there's bound to be one or two that fall through the cracks over the years. This is every bit as good as "So Emotional" or "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" or "How Will I Know", but you never hear it, and that's a shame.
Loved "Love Will Save The Day", definitely an underrated Whitney song! I'm surprised "Shame On The Moon" was a #2 single considering it seems to have faded out of view.
My 5 picks...'Adult education',hall and oates,..'I don't wanna talk about it',rod stewart..'Cherry bomb'.john cougar mellencamp..'So far away' ', Dire straits...'Someday',Glass tiger...
Easy Lover is song by Phil Collins and Philip Bailey - Loverboy (B Ocean) Lovergirl (Teena Marie) and Easy Lover were all on the charts at the same time in early 1985...
Even better from Til' Tuesday... "What About Love"... don't get me wrong, I *love* "Voices".... but "What About..." is my second fav song of all time. So damned good.
The song I love from Billy Ocean is Love Zone, the synth and bass are incredible, and even though it was a Top 10 hit, you never hear it played anywhere. I dig his Mystery Lady too.
I think that's early 90's. The professor seems to stick to 80's. Great song..and album too. Sean and Chris's brother right?. Married my 80's crush Aimee Mann
Wow - thank you for the introduction to The Church - and "Reptile", I was serving a mission when Starfish came out, and never heard of it, or them - the guitar line just woke me up, and I love their sound. Gonna check them out.
Yet another excellent choice of songs to showcase. They all bring back such special memories of my childhood. I would put ‘One On One’ by Hall & Oates up there along with ‘Say It Isn’t So’. I always thought it was such a great song with such a cool sound, but I never hear much about it.
My son’s middle school played “Walk of Life” in the hallways between classes. Loved that!!!! And I thought I was the ONLY person who knew “Mary’s Prayer!” THANK YOU for including it! I agree that it is absolutely perfect. ❤
Totally agree on "Skateaway." Dire Straits didn't even include it on their greatest hits collection, though they did include "Romeo and Juliet," which our station never even played *once* on its own! (They did play the entire Making Movies album once.)
"Skateaway" is my favorite Dire Straits song. If you haven't yet, check out "Don't Give Up" live from "Secret World Live" with Paula Cole. Better yet, buy the Blu-ray of "Secret World Live". I can't recommend it highly enough.
Mary's Prayer was playing in the background on my random 80s playlist curated by my cable company several years ago. It was the first time I heard it ever. It actually made me stop what I was doing and I turned up the volume and wondered, "This was an 80s song? I don't ever remember hearing this? What a great song!" I then searched for it online and added to my personal collection. What a great find! I can tell you precisely when that song could have been playing for me back when I was growing up in the 80s. This newly discovered song manages to fit into my past perfectly as if it was always there with the rest of my personal soundtrack. Great picks overall, Professor!
Love your channel, Brother. While these did get recognition, these (in my opinion) didn't get enough. My 5: "Every Little Kiss", Bruce Hornsby and the Range "Hard Habit to Break", Chicago "Who's Crying Now", Journey "Say You Will", Foreigner . . .and by my favorite group- "Pamela",Toto
Very much agree with your assessment of "Mary's Prayer." When that song was released, I was 19 and communicating with a young lady who lived 1500 miles away. The excitement and vulnerability of that fledgling relationship made the song even more powerful to me and it remains one of my favorite memories.
Hooters - All You Zombies Basis - Time and Tide Kool & the Gang - Misled Billy Idol - Flesh For Fantasy Russ Ballard - Voices Dire Straits - Ride Across the River INXS - Never Tear Us Apart Cars - Moving In Stereo Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance Belle Stars - Iko Iko Cyndi Lauper - When You Were Mine Ivan Neville - Not Just Another Girl
"Misled"...loved it back then, and still to this day. "Buffalo Stance"...I remember how Neneh Cherry was supposed to be the Next Big Thing. I lived in L.A., and the L.A. Times rock critic, Robert Hilburn, had a couple of super annoying habits. One of them was when there was an artist he was really, really high on, he would find a way to insert that artist's name into reviews of other artists' albums. His favorite was clearly Bruce Springsteen, and for years the man seemed incapable of writing a review without mentioning him. It didn't matter if he was reviewing Salt N Pepa, or New Kids on the Block, or Sheila E, or you name it...the guy would somehow find a way to mention Springsteen in the review. I say this because Neneh Cherry was another one of his pet artists, and he did the same thing with her for a few years...constantly brought her up in non-related reviews. It kind of made me dislike her, just because he loved her so much and wouldn't shut up about her, and I was kind of happy when her second album tanked. Another thing he would do would be to invoke an established artist to describe a newer artist, so his reviews were always full of phrases like "Paula Abdul is the Eartha Kitt of dance pop", or "George Michael is the Frank Sinatra of blue-eyed soul", or whatever. Anyway, I remember how, true to form, he referred to Neneh Cherry as "the Joni Mitchell of hip-hop". God, I hated that guy.
Yes all day to “Mary’s Prayer”. If I close my eyes when I hear that song, I’m transported right back to my junior high and high school days back in the 80s. Perfection.
This has become my favorite you tube channel my top five 80's forgotten songs that have to be heard the motels only the lonely quarterflash take me to heart til tuesday what about love dream academy life in a northern town swing out sister twilight world
Take The L is such a great song, it was the second single from The Motels All Four One album and it missed the Top 40. And their Shame, their final Top 40 hit, is damn good (#21 I think), and the music video is great, directed by David Fincher - you knew he was gonna go on to bigger and better things, in the movies
"Mary's Prayer" the song that opens with such a jarring hook and it never lets go. I literally punched the air when I saw it topping this list. Cripes, what a classic!!
the Song that makes the broken heart breaking more in the first moment ... and in the second moment it starts its healing....once again you got me with tellin' your story 'bout the "soundtrack" for the very first heartbreak.....mine was "empty rooms" "hunting high and low"...."and nothing compares to you"....goddamned i am so glad we grew up with all that beautiful music .....
Only Time Will Tell is just fenomenal. Since I randomly discovered it here on UA-cam, it became one of my fav songs of all time. Such energy perfectly translated by those beautiful arrangements and the incredible vocal provided by John Wetton just made it THE song.
Great list. Here are a few of mine. Crazy-Icehouse Been in Love Before-Cutting Crew Wild Horses-Gino Vinelli Indian Summer-Dream Academy Notice Me-Nikki Hands to Heaven-Breathe
Here's 10 more ...Valerie- Steve Winwood. Let me be the one-Expose. Electric Blue-Icehouse. Only the lonely-Motels. I've been in love before-Cutting Crew. Angel eyes-Jeff Healy Band. Circle-Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians. Silent Running-Mike and The Mechanics Roseanne Cash-I don't know why you don't want me. Breathe-Don't tell me lies.
Excellent commentary. Too many people don't listen to lyrics of these songs. No one can imitate a great singer and no one can bring it like Rod Stewart.
The Call is a forgotten band, Everywhere I go is awesome! Let the day begin is so underrated as well. I would love to hear you talk about them. Crazy by Icehouse also seems to be under the radar, great song!
Robbie Neville "C'est la Vie" and/or "Dominoes" Rick Springfield "Rock of Life" (a million times better than Jessie's Girl!) Richard Marx "Don't Mean Nuthin'" Love and Rockets "No New Tale to Tell" Squeeze "Hourglass" So many more!
I had a very bittersweet attraction with "Mary's Prayer' and "my heart can't tell you No", man. It's almost as if, these writers were in tune with us teenagers in the 80s.
My mom listened to Rod Stewart’s Out Of Order and Dire Straits’ Brothers In Arms a lot when I was a little kid back then. With the latter album, it was such a massive corner of my musical life that I cannot imagine what kind of person I’d be like without it. I adore ‘Walk of Life’, but I think it’s been played often during sporting events (hell, the video is a compilation of sports bloopers). I’d have picked ‘So Far Away’, myself, only partially because it’s my favorite Dire Straits song.
Good call on the Rod song. For *decades* I've said that is one of the most perfectly-produced songs ever recorded. So many little details in the marimba, acoustic guitar and D-50 layers. So F'ing good. And HOLY SHIT... FINALLY someone else remembers Mary's Prayer and gives it the respect it deserves. Every time I sit down at my piano I inevitably wander around to playing that one at some point. So good... and I'm actually glad it has stayed hidden all these decades so that it hasn't been overplayed.... "I made such a big mistake..."... yup, been there.
Awesome that you featured “Reptile” by The Church. And when are you gonna post the whole interview with Steve Kilbey? The Church is a criminally underrated band, that has been making great rock for decades, and would be in their 40th anniversary tour this year if it weren’t for the pandemic. The whole album of Starfish is great, but is not even their best.
+1 Hall and Oates backing vocals. I noticed how cool the arrangements are on so many songs when I couldn't sing along without messing them up for the first few times. They and their whole crew are supremely talented. Can't wait for the segment!!
Icehouse "My Obsession" a-ha "The Sun Always Shines on T.V." Level 42 "Lessons In Love" Nik Kershaw "The Riddle" The Angels "No Secrets" The La's "There She Goes"
I can sing about half of Say it Isn't So (both this one and the one by The Outfield). My favorite part is," Do you want to be the stranger at the party, i know that you lieeee, and anything can happen so flyyyy away, fly away goodbye." Also, have you heard Possession Obsession with John on the lead? He does an amazing job!
I'm such a 80's succer, I was born in the 80's so I was obviously too small to know or listen to some or many of these songs at the time. THANK YOU for these gems Professor, they certainly don't disappoint a 80's baby...🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I considered myself a massive 80’s fan but only recently heard Reptile when I had to learn it on bass for a Valentine’s Day show. It’s such an amazing song to listen to and to play it is even better. Thanks for recognising Aussie band The Church in your list. :)
Yes yes yes YES! Thank you for finally giving Mary's Prayer it's due... I've been in love with that song since it was released in the US when I was a teen.. I had the 45 rpm.. It's still one of my go to favourite 80s ( actually any decade ) songs. BEAUTIFUL! heartbreaking... So very very good
Marys Prayer!!! I never knew who actually performed that! Thank you. What a wonderful choice! Totally sitting here air-piano-playing at my desk...This makes me infinitely happy.
Don’t forget about Breathe’s All That Jazz - 1987! Back in the day, bought the cd for the singles Hands to Heaven (reached #2 on US charts) and How Can I Fall. recently listened to a vinyl pressing of the record I found in a dollar bin. Hadn’t heard it in over 30 years, but its a great Jazz/Pop infused record.
Hey mate! I really like your videos. The '80s were a special decade for me. I was in my early 20's and going to clubs and bars. There are so many great 80s songs. Here are a few to check out, if you like. You may have heard them. maybe not. 1. I know there's something going on - Frida (Phil Collins on drums) 2. Destination Unknown - The Missing Persons 3. Love My Way - Psychedelic Furs 4. The Promise - When In Rome 5. Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush
I believe Phil Collins produced her whole album. She was really trying to break from ABBA and he had a distinctive sound. And Meg Myers did a fabulous cover of Running Up That Hill you might like.
Henry Lee Summer - Hey Baby Breakfast Club - Right On Track Yaz - Only You Swing Out Sister - Breakout Regina - Baby Love Men At Work - Overkill Ready For The World - Oh Sheila
Modern English - Someones Calling Jon Astley - Janes Getting serious Wang Chung - Dance hall days Stan Ridgeway - Camouflage Haircut 100 - Love Plus One NEXT Please!
The Church's _Starfish_ is one of those rare, almost perfect albums. "Antenna", "North South East and West"...well, I could name any song off of the album as being a favorite of mine at one time or another.
Mary’s Prayer, wow, whoah, yeah, it’s the epitome of 80’s angst and heartbreak, a song that tears you apart when you remember lost loves. Yeah, Adam, you nailed this as the top song for this volume of 80’s gems.
Talk Talk - Life's what you make it Fixx - Secret Separation Naked Eyes - When the lights go out Scritti Politti - Perfect Way Blow Monkeys - Diggin' your scene
I feel like Johnny Hates Jazz is another under appreciated 80's band. "Turn Back the Clock", "Shattered Dreams", and "Turn the Tide" are incredible songs. They came out before my time and I had to really dig to find out about them. I never hear them played on radio anymore.
Say It Isn’t So is one of my top 3 favorite songs of all time. It never gets old. When Daryl gets in the zone leading up to that last chorus, I always get goosebumps. You are right, such an underrated song in their catalog.
MY TOP 5 FORGOTTEN 80s SINGLES..... "Shattered Dreams" johnny hates jazz "My ever changing moods" Style council 'I've been in love before" cutting crew " love changes everything" climie fisher "Tell Me" white lion
ok this is a little scary .... some of the songs you're picking are all time favs of mine already .... almost anything by The Church, King for a Day, Something About You, Tarzan Boy, Electric Blue, Tonight She Comes, Lips Like Sugar.... You've also introduced me to a few good things I wasn't aware of however -- thank you. May I humbly suggest revisiting Katrina and the Waves debut album -- some great power pop I hadn't heard until like this year. I always knew their one big hit Walking on Sunshine
I'm a child of the 80s for sure, but I have never heard that Rod Stewart song. On the other hand, Mary's Prayer is a beautiful song that puts a lump in my throat whenever I hear it. My forgotten favorite is "Be Near Me" by ABC. It just makes me happy.
*Danny Wilson*'s MARY'S PRAYER always makes me sad (even though the song is juxtaposed by such as melodious tune). I keep saying, but my friends do not seem to be intrigued, that Donna Lewis's I COULD BE THE ONE is an adapted version of MARY'S PRAYER.
I just have to tell you, I enjoy every single video of yours I have watched. When I first saw your username "Professor of Rock" I was like ... "Uh huh..." but really, the name fits. You go so very in depth with and don't just discuss the surface details of songs, bands and their music. Watching you feels worth while every time and I always learn something. Thank you.
Goin' Down - Greg Guidry (1982) would be the first in my list when it comes to 80s forgotten songs. only reached # 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 # 11 on the US adult contemporary
You are the ONE I've been looking for 4 a long time!! I absolutely love that you appreciate the tunes I love.. Your intense emotions and descriptions of each tune is healing to me. The nostalgia inside my soul is now back in tact. I love the feelings that rush thru me during each and every upload. THANK YOU SO MUCH
LOL. I had made the same comment on that earlier video. It just reeks of the plastic 80s pop songs...but hey, everyone has different tastes. Lessons in Love - great song
@@warrenny "Mercedes Boy" is generic-sounding R&B dance pop. I usually agree with the self-proclaimed Professor of Rock, but that choice tarnished my opinion of his taste somewhat.
@@warrenny - I think Pebble's song Girlfriend is the gem. I'm a huge LA Reid & Babyface fan, and was all up on anything that was produced by them.. I think Professor of Rock is pretty pop oriented. Which probably explains his very eclectic taste. When I hear Mercedes Boy, I'm like 😍😍😍😍 because of Pebbles. I never knew that Girlfriend was originally offered to Vanessa Williams which is insane because she would've killed it. As much as I think Lessons in Love is great, Level 42's early work is where it's at. I think Level 42 fans were getting turned off when they were becoming more poppy. They're awesome regardless.
@@islandbee I probably am wrong to refer to any music as plastic pop; we all enjoy our own tastes in music. As for the latter half of 80s R&B, I prefer Lewis/Jam over Reid/Baby Face. But they all did their best to provide us with good music, and that's enough for anyone. Love Vanessa Williams voice. Brilliant!
I 100% agree with your list, here are a few more When the Lights Go Out- Naked Eyes, When Your Heart Is Weak- Cock Robin, Kayleigh- Marillion, Need Somebody-DeBarge, Trouble In Pardise-Huey Lewis & The News, Goodbye Girl- Go West.
ABC "The Look of Love" Shannon "Let the Music Play" The Style Council "Long Hot Summer" Prefab Sprout "When Love Breaks Down" The Smiths "Bigmouth Strikes Again" Lloyd Cole & the Commotions "Perfect Skin" The Housemartins "Happy Hour" Aztec Camera "Oblivious"
My five favorite forgotten hits 1. Baby's it's tonight- Jude Cole 2. The Boy's American- Mathew Wilder 3. The Way To Your Heart- Soulsister 4. Sweetheart- Frankie and the Knockout 5. Romeo's Tune- Steve Forbert I could list 100... miss the 80's so much
Yo! Professor of Rock! You have as many hooks as the songs you describe! What a great storyteller you are, could listen all day! Also, love the behind the scenes clips! Please check out the under appreciated band Love and Money...you surely will like Strange Kind of Love, Shape of Things to Come,Hallelujah Man or River of People to name a few.
"Walk of life" is more famous as an Arena Sports songs. it's a Baseball Jock Jam. But here's 5 more "Long Hot Summer" The Style Council- if you're Seriously missing somebody(great BritSoul from the former leader of The Jam,Paul Weller) "Can You Help Me?" Jesse Johnson-forgotten 80's funk that could be used on Black-ish, Mixed-ish or Even "The Goldbergs" "Get Up and Go"-The Go-Gos, it's a great Car Karaoke song with a bad ass chorus "Living in Oblivion" -Anything Box- One of The Most 80's songs ever. If you need an 80's song that isn't "I melt with you" "Promised You a Miracle" Simple Minds- probably their best song before that band reached 80's mega stardom with "Dont you forget about me" And a bonus: "Right On Track" The Breakfast Club"(for you Millennial Kids it's not that hip-hop morning show) From the best 80's band YOU DON'T REMEMBER (but you know their ex singer Madonna very well)
ADAM YOU DID IT AGAIN!!!! LOL! 👍 This video is bringing back so many memories of my childhood in the 80s. My mouth dropped when I saw you got to interview John Oates! Hall and Oates are just one of many groups that had such an impact on me. I loved how John Oates pointed out that instead of putting the backing vocals in their songs to the background, they kept them up front along with lead vocals. I never really noticed that, but now that it's been pointed out it really does make their songs stand out. Say It Isnt So is such a great song. The thing about that song that does it for me is the instrumental break in the middle but right before it starts you have that manipulation of the vocals. Then the rest of the song kicks back in! It's so good! I could talk for hours about Hall and Oates and their music. The song that is my favorite is........ M-E-T-H-O-D-O-F-L-O-V-E Method Of Modern Love is such an amazing song, it is one of my favorite Hall and Oates songs. The song starts off with the spelling of the title, the mellow parts of the song with smooth vocals, and then the rocking out parts. Bringing all those things together makes this song amazing! The video for this song is great too! The members of the band singing in front if this big moon and dancing and jumping among the clouds. I remember being little and walking out at night and seeing a full moon. I would look up at it and think of that video and wish I could be up there in the night sky! The 80s were the Sound and Vision decade. If you heard the song first, back then it made you wonder what the video was going to be like. And if you saw the video first you would wonder where the song would chart on the music charts. At that time the song and the video worked hand in hand. You mentioned you were going to be doing a Hall and Oates video. I can not wait to see it!! This is one band that deserves a video of their own. They have such a great catalog of music that you could talk about it for days. Should I even get started on their song One On One? Lol!
Adam--we must be brothers in concurring realities. Your showing me all my favorite songs that I thought I've long forgotten is otherworldly. Great videos!
donald fagen's "new frontier" will always be 1984 for me. marathon sessions of monopoly soundtracked by USA's "night flight". this song, and "burning down the house", and "close (to the edit)". Long weekends surrounding "the day after"....when the bombs went off and my mother sobbed and told me i was a cold fish. no, momma, that was just my reality. "the key word is survival on the new frontier." obviously i grew up in the 80s, and can cite deep cuts all day, but that is one i never hear mentioned. here: ua-cam.com/video/qBruAooXPNU/v-deo.html
You summed up my middle school years. I fell in love with New Frontier BECAUSE of the video, then realized it's a great song too. Close (to the edit) was another fave. Love Night Flight. Music videos were so exciting.
Have you checked out THE MAN IN THE TINFOIL HAT on Todd Rundgren s album White Knight featuring Donald Fagen vocals.Todd and I have discussed this for WAXX TRAXX to the MAXX on WUSB. FM New York .. feel free to join the Facebook page and Tune in.
My dad did same to me. Rod Stewart has the most soulful voice and is my favorite to this day, 45 year fan! Excellent in concert💕 Also, made me a fanatic of raspy voices, Bryan Adams, Sting, etc ...

Professor of Rock: What are your thoughts on the differences between Rod Stewart’s version/video of ‘Some Guys Have All The Luck’ and Robert Palmer’s version/video of that iconic song?
B V: Nope. Catholic.
Frida - “I Know There’s Something Going On”. Brilliant vocals by Frida (of ABBA) and awesome Phil Collins drumming
Excellent song
That beat wont be topped. And that intro..... Damn. Power, right from the start.
What movie or show did that pop up on?
@Ulvaeus I _lovelovelove_ that track.. and thank you, bc I've not been able to recall the title. I had mistook it for an ABBA track.

Completely agree. This guy has switched me back on to proper music, I’ve gotten rid of most of my music streaming speakers and got myself a vinyl turntable again, love it!
The Church is easily the most offensively underrated band EVER! So much there to listen to.
"Crazy" by Icehouse, "Secret Separation" by the Fixx, "What About Me" by Moving Pictures, "Forever Live and Die" by OMD, and "Kayleigh" by Marillion. "Reptile" by the Church is amazing. One of a kind composition.
Don't Disturb This Groove - The System
Never Surrender - Corey Hart
I've Been In Love Before - Crowded House
The Ghost In You - The Psychedelic Furs
Tender Love - Force MD's
I've been in love before was by Cutting Crew
Don't Disturb This Groove is a true hidden 80s gem.
I've Been in Love Before by Cutting Crew (not Crowded House) is a beautiful song.
Wow, The System! Thanks for that!
Favorites:
Hall & Oates: Out of Touch
Asia: Only Time Will Tell
Honeymoon Suite: What Does It Take
The Motels: Suddenly Last Summer
John Waite: Change
The Motels, "Suddenly, Last Summer" and "Only The Lonely." When I hear either song it takes me right back to the 80's.
@Durian Durian And it has such a wonderful 80s sound.
I love The Church so much... I’ve been listening to them since Metropolis...
I caught the video for "Reptile" a few years ago on VH1 Classic, and it was one of those rare songs that instantly hook you.
My favorite song by them is GRIND... the acoustic version is amazingly awesome.
Me too. I WORSHIP The Church.
@@passenger6x3 LOST Is beyond anything. Happy to attend 2018 London gig weekend for the 40 years anniversary...and met all the band
awesome!
Best rock Duo of all time Hall & Oates. Also, best harmonizing vocals any band. I didn't realize 21 hits but I'm not surprised because I have 2-cd greatest hits of theirs.
They are more of a pop rock duo, with the pop being slightly stronger I'd say.
Kiss On My Lips & Private Eyes still in my top 25!
I’ll never get tired of hearing “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)”
Captain Of Her Heart - Double
Alive And Kicking - Simple Minds
Eyes Without A Face - Billy Idol
Always Something There To Remind Me - Naked Eyes
Back In The High Life Again - Steve Winwood
Only The Lonely - The Motels
Cuts Like A Knife - Bryan Adams
Saved By Zero - The Fixx
Love Plus One - Haircut 100
Ah! Leah! - Donnie Iris
Find Your Way Back - Starship
Don’t Shed A Tear - Paul Carrack
Love Will Find A Way - Yes
The One I Love - REM
Sirius/Eye In The Sky - Alan Parsons Project
Flesh For Fantasy - Billy Idol
Wasted On The Way - CSN
Miss Sun - Boz Skaggs
In The Shape Of A Heart - Jackson Browne
Crazy - Icehouse
Ship Of Fools - Robert Plant
The Flame - Cheap Trick
Stepping Out - Joe Jackson
Your list would work as nice mixed tape!👍
Great list! How about "Whisper to a Scream" by Icicle Works? Also "Heaven" by Eurogliders and "When Your Heart is Weak" by Cock Robin.
Jeff Cobb yesss... loved that song!
Love Captain of Her Heart - very underrated
Great choice hands down!!! You're like a twin to me :) We grew up in the best of times.
Ohhh Marys Prayer, so so so so sooooooo good. One of those songs that specifically nails a very specific sound of a very specific period of the 80s
Exactly. There was like a post new romantic vibe goin on in 87,88. 😆
@@marcofalzone6469 I can remember those 3 UK releases. I thought it was going to make the top 40 on its second one but it didn't. Third time out, I thought it's got to make it this time and it did. Great song that haven't heard in quite a while.
...and one that specifically chronicles my disastrous love life.
The Church is amazing - some of the stuff off Priest = Aura is magical (particularly Ripple).
Great video! My 5 overlooked 80's songs:
1. Love Is in Control-Donna Summer
2. Life's What You Make It- Talk Talk
3. Take Your Time- SOS Band
4. I Found It (Just Got Lucky) Joe Boxers.
5. We Close Our Eyes- Go West
YEEEEEESSSS to "Love is In Control"! I play that song REGULARLY! I don't understand why radio doesn't!
The Kinks - Come Dancing
Jason And The Scorchers - White Lies
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
The Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way
The Bangles - Going Down To Liverpool
Hero Takes a Fall by The Bangles is even more hidden, being a minor hit from their first album.
Thumbs up for She Sells Sanctuary, that's one of the best songs of all time
Daryl Hall and John Oates are my favorite duo. They were the first catalogue I collected.
They were my favorite group for a time in the early 80's. "Private Eyes" ...That album is perfection!
I collected The Police and Hall and Oates about the same time
Kiss On My List, for me, is *the* perfect pop song. The rhythm guitar and chord progression is hypnotic, the bass has funk, the bridge is something that lifts you up to the final chorus where Daryl’s vocals are flawless.
@@davidtoth9370 I love that one and Say It Isn't So is also awesome.
"reptile" is one of the most amazing songs ever. check out the church's "heyday" to hear a lot of that special church-sound.
Yassssss
The Church have held up so well it’s kind of stunning
Growing up in Australia in the 80’s the Church was one of my favourite bands to see live. Unguarded moment is truly a classic 80’s track
So glad I found this channel. Here are my five forgotten 80s classics: Der Kommissar by ATF; A Girl Like You by the Smithereens; Look of Love by ABC; Turn to You by the Go-Gos; and Breakout by Swing Out Sister.
NU SHOOZs I can't wait and level 42 Something about you came out around the same time and awesome
Yes!!
I can't wait..... Beautiful song.......
Agree!!!!
Oh, m'gawd! I think we might be long, lost twins!! Tell me u LOVE those two songs!! 🤞💙
Those are definitely two songs that have stayed on my playlist, and will never be removed.
"Say it Isn't So" is one of my absolute favorite H&O songs, great choice.
Some forgotten 80's hits that come to mind:
"Givin' it Up For Your Love" - Delbert McClinton...it was a top 10 pop hit in 1980, so the 80's had yet to become what we now know they became, and it's more like a throwback to an earlier time.
Great selections! Chaka Khan takes "Got To Be There" to new hights! It is a stellar vocal performance.
Voyeur was a great song
Loved "Love Will Save The Day", definitely an underrated Whitney song! I'm surprised "Shame On The Moon" was a #2 single considering it seems to have faded out of view.
My 5 picks...'Adult education',hall and oates,..'I don't wanna talk about it',rod stewart..'Cherry bomb'.john cougar mellencamp..'So far away' ', Dire straits...'Someday',Glass tiger...
I agree with 3 out of 5, man. 😁
Cherry Bomb rocks
Voices Carry - ‘Til Tuesday
Loverboy - Billy Ocean
Loverboy - Phil Collins And Philip Bailey
Some Like It Hot - The Power Station
Stop - Sam Brown
Easy Lover is song by Phil Collins and Philip Bailey - Loverboy (B Ocean) Lovergirl (Teena Marie) and Easy Lover were all on the charts at the same time in early 1985...
Im guessing Loverboy (twice) was a typo. Easy Lover was an awesome song! Can't think of a better m2m duet out there.
Even better from Til' Tuesday... "What About Love"... don't get me wrong, I *love* "Voices".... but "What About..." is my second fav song of all time. So damned good.
There's an extended version of Easy Lover that is just INTENSE.
The song I love from Billy Ocean is Love Zone, the synth and bass are incredible, and even though it was a Top 10 hit, you never hear it played anywhere. I dig his Mystery Lady too.
Michael Penn’s “No Myth” is another great, forgotten track.
I think that's early 90's. The professor seems to stick to 80's. Great song..and album too. Sean and Chris's brother right?. Married my 80's crush Aimee Mann
@@gregs.1014 No it was 89.
@@GeoffBosco sorry bra
Oh, yeah! 🤦♀️
@@gregs.1014 Yep. Sean and Chris’ brother.
"One On One" was played a lot on the urban stations at that time. It's one of their best slow jams.
My son’s middle school played “Walk of Life” in the hallways between classes. Loved that!!!! And I thought I was the ONLY person who knew “Mary’s Prayer!” THANK YOU for including it! I agree that it is absolutely perfect. ❤
Dire Straits: "Skateaway" (1980)
Squeeze: "Black Coffee in Bed" (1982)
Jo Boxers: "Just Got Lucky" (1983)
Peter Gabriel: "Don't Give Up" (1986)
Icehouse: "Electric Blue" (1987)
Totally agree on "Skateaway." Dire Straits didn't even include it on their greatest hits collection, though they did include "Romeo and Juliet," which our station never even played *once* on its own! (They did play the entire Making Movies album once.)
"Skateaway" is my favorite Dire Straits song. If you haven't yet, check out "Don't Give Up" live from "Secret World Live" with Paula Cole. Better yet, buy the Blu-ray of "Secret World Live". I can't recommend it highly enough.
Electric Blue: Love the backing vocals that call ahead the next line of the main vocals in the chorus. Very cool!
JUST GOT LUCKY!!!!
My 5:
"Every Little Kiss", Bruce Hornsby and the Range
"Hard Habit to Break", Chicago
"Who's Crying Now", Journey
"Say You Will", Foreigner . . .and by my favorite group-
"Pamela",Toto
Loved "Say You Will" by Foreigner, definitely one of their most underrated hits.
Damn! You brought a tear to my eye!
Who's Crying Now is really one of their best songs.
Also, my kids love Cold As Ice...they song it in the car all the time! 😁
Very much agree with your assessment of "Mary's Prayer." When that song was released, I was 19 and communicating with a young lady who lived 1500 miles away. The excitement and vulnerability of that fledgling relationship made the song even more powerful to me and it remains one of my favorite memories.
Hooters - All You Zombies
Basis - Time and Tide
Kool & the Gang - Misled
Billy Idol - Flesh For Fantasy
Russ Ballard - Voices
Dire Straits - Ride Across the River
INXS - Never Tear Us Apart
Cars - Moving In Stereo
Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance
Belle Stars - Iko Iko
Cyndi Lauper - When You Were Mine
Ivan Neville - Not Just Another Girl
Perfection.
This has become my favorite you tube channel
my top five 80's forgotten songs that have to be heard
the motels only the lonely
quarterflash take me to heart
til tuesday what about love
dream academy life in a northern town

Take The L is such a great song, it was the second single from The Motels All Four One album and it missed the Top 40. And their Shame, their final Top 40 hit, is damn good (#21 I think), and the music video is great, directed by David Fincher - you knew he was gonna go on to bigger and better things, in the movies
My heart can't tell you no was the first time I heard what Love should feel like
Brought me back to early teen heartache days with that one.
Corey Hart - Never Surrender, Yazoo - Only You, Asia - Only Time Will Tell, Rainbow - Street Of Dreams & Survivor - High On You
Only Time Will Tell is just fenomenal.
Since I randomly discovered it here on UA-cam, it became one of my fav songs of all time. Such energy perfectly translated by those beautiful arrangements and the incredible vocal provided by John Wetton just made it THE song.
1:06 "Don't forget me when I'm gone" of Glass Tiger and "Something about you" of Level 42, were (and still are) very good-known songs here in Mexico.
The Church has so many AMAZING albums, not just Starfish. Reptile is a phenomenal song, but give the entire album a listen.
Great list. Here are a few of mine.
Crazy-Icehouse
Been in Love Before-Cutting Crew
Wild Horses-Gino Vinelli
Indian Summer-Dream Academy
Notice Me-Nikki
Hands to Heaven-Breathe
Alan Urich
Thanks for posting this. The Call are my all time favorite band.
In the early days of MTV, The Call’s When The Walls Came Down was in heavy rotation, it should’ve been a hit
Robbie Neville "C'est la Vie" and/or "Dominoes"
Rick Springfield "Rock of Life" (a million times better than Jessie's Girl!)
Richard Marx "Don't Mean Nuthin'"
Love and Rockets "No New Tale to Tell"
Squeeze "Hourglass"
So many more!
I loved Rock of Life
"C'est La Vie" was my jam back in the 80's! It STILL sounds great today, great selection!
I loved Love Is Alright off that album
Excellent call on Don’t Mean Nuthin’, and wasn’t it co written by Godfather to his child Fee Waybill? Saw them perform it live together, classic!!
Kick ass list !
That Outfield album in the back is so iconic that I can spot it a mile away even if it's partly hidden!
Outfield was my first ever rock concert!
Sharp eye!
I thought it was Naked Eyes. I googled yello white green album outfield. Somehow ,I remembered The Outfield.
I think The Outfield gets super overlooked, also.
Every time you cry
I think any album from _Heyday_ to _Forget Yourself_ could be their best ;)
I agree with Mary’s Prayer. Others that come to mind are Radioactive by The Firm, Girls with Guns by Tommy Shaw, and I’ll Leave It Up To You by Poco.
Something About You and Our House by Madness have come to mean even more to me now than they did back in the 80s. I can play them both on loop.
The Korgis "Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime"
This is one of my dad's favorite songs. It's so hauntingly beautiful.
That song came from another dimension.
LOVE that song!
Excellent tune
Ohhh. The Church! One of the best bands in my life. Great music and all their albums are masterpieces....
I love The Church, and Reptile is a great song. Thanks, professor, for including it on this list.
+1 Hall and Oates backing vocals. I noticed how cool the arrangements are on so many songs when I couldn't sing along without messing them up for the first few times. They and their whole crew are supremely talented. Can't wait for the segment!!
Icehouse "My Obsession"
a-ha "The Sun Always Shines on T.V."
Level 42 "Lessons In Love"
Nik Kershaw "The Riddle"
The Angels "No Secrets"
The La's "There She Goes"
Nik Kershaw! Haven’t thought of him in years. Will need to give a listen and remind myself why I liked him back in the day. Thanks for the reminder 😃.
I agree with A-ha. That's a gem.
Icehouse is so good. 'Crazy', 'Electric Blue', 'Touch the Fire' and many more songs.

I have to agree that Level 42 " something about you" is about as perfect a song that's ever been put together.. never gets old ..
PO is a forgotten H&O song, for sure
I'm such a 80's succer, I was born in the 80's so I was obviously too small to know or listen to some or many of these songs at the time. THANK YOU for these gems Professor, they certainly don't disappoint a 80's baby...🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Huey Lewis and the News - Jacob’s Ladder!
This song didn’t get much attention even though it went to #1 in ‘86.
And the hit album it came off of-Fore which also got to number 1 on the US Album Chart in 1986
Agreed. a forgotten gem for sure
Bruce Hornsby wrote it!

Yes. Bruce is genious. Huey is awesome too.
Also "Walking On A Thin Line'

Love The Church. Reptile is amazing. Priest = Aura is a masterpiece
Absolutely correct. My only complaints about _P=A_ would be too many waltzes, and I missed Ploog on the drums. But it's a great album.

Femme F8tal yeah that’s a great and classy song. I feel like the vibrato might be a bit overdone tho
Hey mate! I really like your videos. The '80s were a special decade for me. I was in my early 20's and going to clubs and bars. There are so many great 80s songs. Here are a few to check out, if you like. You may have heard them. maybe not.

2. Destination Unknown - The Missing Persons
3. Love My Way - Psychedelic Furs

I believe Phil Collins produced her whole album. She was really trying to break from ABBA and he had a distinctive sound.
And Meg Myers did a fabulous cover of Running Up That Hill you might like.

Reptile is a really good song but it had to follow Under The Milkyway , an all time classic. The guitar on reptile is Awesome !
Killer tune. As close to perfect as any song from the 80's.
Lost and Hotel Womb I'd put both ahead from that album.
“Say it isn’t so” is even better Live at Daryls

Talk Talk - Life's what you make it
Fixx - Secret Separation
Naked Eyes - When the lights go out
Scritti Politti - Perfect Way
Blow Monkeys - Diggin' your scene
Blow Monkeys FTW!!!!!
dude, you were so right about Danny Wilson Mary's Prayer
I feel like Johnny Hates Jazz is another under appreciated 80's band. "Turn Back the Clock", "Shattered Dreams", and "Turn the Tide" are incredible songs. They came out before my time and I had to really dig to find out about them. I never hear them played on radio anymore.
Opus. Live is Life. Love that jam.
"Shattered Dreams" johnny hates jazz
"My ever changing moods" Style council
'I've been in love before" cutting crew
" love changes everything" climie fisher
"Tell Me" white lion
That's a great list. For some reason, when he mentioned Mary's Prayer, I also thought of Shattered Dreams.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Ever Changing Moods!
MY EVER CHANGING MOODS what a bop!!!
So great that Mary's Prayer is getting some love! One of my top ten 80s songs ever!
ok this is a little scary .... some of the songs you're picking are all time favs of mine already .... almost anything by The Church, King for a Day, Something About You, Tarzan Boy, Electric Blue, Tonight She Comes, Lips Like Sugar.... You've also introduced me to a few good things I wasn't aware of however -- thank you. May I humbly suggest revisiting Katrina and the Waves debut album -- some great power pop I hadn't heard until like this year. I always knew their one big hit Walking on Sunshine
Damn good list.. I traveled back reading it..
Thank you.
OMG. Real talk "say it isn't so" is my all time favorite hall & Oates song. I almost cried when I heard them sing it live.
Goin' Down - Greg Guidry (1982)
would be the first in my list when it comes to 80s forgotten songs.
only reached # 17 on the Billboard Hot 100
# 11 on the US adult contemporary
Just listened to it again. Such a good song. You're so right though--never hear this song anymore.
Guidry..I forgot that one!
A one Hit Wonder for me
definitely a great, underrated song that seems to be forgotten.
That's a good call. Only time I hear that is on Casey Kasem's AT 40 show reruns or Big 80's Weekly top 40 if they do that particular time in 1982.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
I personally disagree on "Mercedes Boy." The unsung Level 42 song is "Lessons in Love." Gorgeous song.
Brilliant!
I 100% agree with your list, here are a few more
When the Lights Go Out- Naked Eyes, When Your Heart Is Weak- Cock Robin, Kayleigh- Marillion, Need Somebody-DeBarge, Trouble In Pardise-Huey Lewis & The News, Goodbye Girl- Go West.
ABC "The Look of Love"
Shannon "Let the Music Play"
The Style Council "Long Hot Summer"
Prefab Sprout "When Love Breaks Down"
The Smiths "Bigmouth Strikes Again"
Lloyd Cole & the Commotions "Perfect Skin"
The Housemartins "Happy Hour"
Aztec Camera "Oblivious"
I'd replace "The Look of Love" which was pretty popular with the lesser known "All of My Heart."
All of my heart
My five favorite forgotten hits
1. Baby's it's tonight- Jude Cole
2. The Boy's American- Mathew Wilder
3. The Way To Your Heart- Soulsister
4. Sweetheart- Frankie and the Knockout
5. Romeo's Tune- Steve Forbert
I could list 100... miss the 80's so much
But here's 5 more
"Long Hot Summer" The Style Council- if you're Seriously missing somebody(great BritSoul from the former leader of The Jam,Paul Weller)
"Can You Help Me?" Jesse Johnson-forgotten 80's funk that could be used on Black-ish, Mixed-ish or Even "The Goldbergs"
"Get Up and Go"-The Go-Gos, it's a great Car Karaoke song with a bad ass chorus
"Living in Oblivion" -Anything Box- One of The Most 80's songs ever. If you need an 80's song that isn't "I melt with you"
"Promised You a Miracle" Simple Minds- probably their best song before that band reached 80's mega stardom with "Dont you forget about me"
And a bonus:
"Right On Track" The Breakfast Club"(for you Millennial Kids it's not that hip-hop morning show) From the best 80's band YOU DON'T REMEMBER (but you know their ex singer Madonna very well)
ADAM YOU DID IT AGAIN!!!!
M-E-T-H-O-D-O-F-L-O-V-E
Method Of Modern Love is such an amazing song, it is one of my favorite Hall and Oates songs.
Lol!
Wow! First comment. Always golden content from you❤️
Adam--we must be brothers in concurring realities.
