I went to Walmart this morning and heard this song. I thought "wasn't this band Level 42"? Came home and sure enough. The ironic part is that I just turned 42 this morning.
Hating them is a meme but Nickleback also sounded near identical to the studio albums; was a great concert. Hinder, Papa Roach and Saving Able were also great on that ticket. Pretty good first concert.
I won tickets from a radio station in Chicago for the Madonna concert, the only reason I went was L42 was the opening act. One of the best sound of the 80’s.
One of the best songs from the 1980's, and seeing Mark King snap and pop that bass with all those cool lines while singing... as others here have noted, it's not an easy feat at all. And he pulls it off so effortlessly. I remember when this was a hit. The sun shined a lot brighter back then.

The lead vocalist and bassist is truly talented. No one really knows just how hard it is to play an instrument and sing a different melody simultaneously. The guy is truly a badass.

Level 42 are incredible, and Mark king is from another planet. I have played bass for over 30 years, and I cannot begin to tell you how difficult it is to play and sing at the same time, let alone playing the way Mark King is and singing a slower melody line. Outstanding talent. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I saw them at the Ritz in NYC on this tour. Hardly anyone in the place. Unreal! I stood at the foot of the stage looking up at Mark King and was stunned at his ability to sing and play those phenomenal bass lines. The whole band was beyond incredible. The best show I have ever attended.

I noticed at the beginning of the song the keyboard part of the song is heard but Mike Lindup can be seen but appears not to be playing, I was wondering if they use a second keyboard player when playing live ? I noticed this a on a few Level 42 live tracks but I cant seem to see another keyboard player on stage, they aren’t using in ear monitoring so any augmented tracks would have to be played through the floor monitors. I’m not complaining or taking anthing away from this great live band, just wondering how it’s done.
I'm 55 & I remember watching this on Channel 4. The Tube was one of the best programs on TV. I'm so glad I grew up in a time of great music & musicians

As a fan in the US at that time i never saw them on TV playing live like this. So...the "era" like every other, no doubt was still full of media industry bullshit that devalued talent and musicianship over whatever TF they think marketing to make money is.... Hiya. For the benefit of those who aren't English, this band had an uphill struggle during their infancy, because I think they appealed to the Lads and Ladettes community of music lovers. A kind of weekend lager louts culture. Even when drunk, they could still appreciate what a tight and talented outfit Level 42 were. The rest of our country were kind of split into techno, new heavy metal, U2 Goth etc. But Level 42 kinda stood out on their own. And rightly so. Because I still think to this day, the original lineup are unsurpassed, and my respect to Alan's contribution acknowledged, Mark King was at the time, England's finest bass player, and not a bad vocalist if I'm honest. 🎸🤓

Level 42: Great musicians. Mark King is a legend and the whole band and their stage show are second to none. Knowing how to craft songs and knowing how to present them live is special.
The 1980’s were a much simpler and in many ways a better time. World Machine was the soundtrack of my 10 year old existence back in 1986. The nostalgic connection with this song still makes my hairs stand on end.
Phil would have done Porcaro's throne justice had he been called with the task. This is crazy groove drumming herr. This is the pinnacle of the arr, with Porcaro, Gadd, and Peart. He needs to be recognized for being so frrakishly meticulous with gis drumming, so clean, dynamic, and deliciously tasteful with the genius level mapping of his orchestrating. He has some of that Mangini level of precision. Un real. He'd have been able to fill in for Neil Peart.
