This is BY FAR the best video I’ve seen on this task. Excellent explanations, excellent camera work. Gives me confidence I can do this repair in a day no problem.
I ran across your videos and had to leave a comment best tutorials I have seen so far! you know your sh*T ... I did the valve cover on my Sulev N51 3 stage 2008 328i with the help of your video and saved 1500 dollars from local mechanic ... to those reading this ... go out and invest in tools and work on your own cars ... I used to do all my auto repairs but something about BMW seemed difficult so I never tried ... with the help of Zeiten I was able to gain some confidence and know everything about what I am doing and the NAMES of each part helps to teach and learn ... Thanks again man! you have helped me a lot!
I just performed this replacement on my wife's 2009 335i convertible. E93/N54. I had to remove all bottom covers to access/2 metal support braces that prevent me dropping the sway bar. Going to have to remove front 2 bolts each side front to swing out of the way. Tie a rope to the bottom hose of the coolant reservoir if replacing the thermostat. If you accidentally pull the hose out of it's routing location, you don't want to find out it's routed wrong and too short to connect to reservoir like I did. You also have to loosen/disconnect lower charge pipe/square cooler attached to fan housing to allow fan removal. Excellent video from a BMW master! Thanks!
Can’t thank you enough for this video! I watched several others but this one’s the best. I rewatched this a few times before doing this on my 328i e90 and everything went smoothly. Only difference was I have the n51 sulev so there was a bit more to remove around the passenger side radiator, but was easy. No more 02E85 code and everything’s still great after a couple weeks driving it!
I must say best step by step for this job I've seen others that are good and some say you're doing more work than necessary but I say no because you are doing the majority of the job from the top which is perfect for anyone without a lift. Sure if ya got a lift no need to remove the fan or coolant reservoir. Great vid
I have done this job 4 times (2007 328xi x2, 2008 335i coupe 2013 x5 35i). The 4th time I did it without removing fan shroud, it is doable but challenging. This is a great video!!!
Thank you so much for this excellent video!! I followed along as I changed my water pump and thermostat on my 2009 BMW 328ix. I appreciate the clear and thorough instructions! The camera work was excellent as well! Thank you so much! We’ll done!!👍🙌
Zelten you are very the best mechanic on UA-cam for BMW. After replacing starter.all the windows not working and car overheat please help what wrong with it 🙏
Windows not working- most likely fried frm module, very common on after 2009 models if battery was disconnected during starter replacement, overheating- read codes test the water pump, might be related to first issue, see if the fan turns on
one thing not mentioned here for first timers is about reinstallation of the sway bar. if you’re on jack stands and the suspension is not compressed to ride height, you may have to fight the sway bar upon bolting the bushing bracket back onto the frame. either you push very very VERY hard and thread them in carefully, or compress to ride height prior to doing so. won’t have this issue if you’re on ramps obviously.
Best water pump replacement video. Really nice camera work. I purchased the exact pump and thermostat you suggested. Did the install and bleed and it ran great .....for a day. Now pump isn’t working. Zero RPMs. Did more research and found where people were NOT recommending Pierburg pumps. They short out and have to be replaced. Bummed I got to redo this. Is there another pump you would recommend?
2012 335xi 90k miles- yes, the xdrive makes this more difficult! Ratcheting wrench E12 torx or 10mm is essential for the pump - of course I didn't have one and took 3x as long. Also 10mm ratchet wrench for the heater return line brackets (parallel to the sway bar) would have helped. And another helpful is 6mm ratchet wrench for the hose clamps. Also I got the thermostat/pump kit from fcpeuro and an observation is that there are now rubber isolator grommets for mounting the pump! So when bolts are tight the pump can move a little. The existing pump did not have this, and it was a continental (VDO) also, probably original (I got the car 10 months ago). Regarding process, after removing the pump bolts, pull it out a bit, then unbolt the thermostat from the pump, then you can better access the clamp to the main hose. Remove that, then you can remove everthing thermostat still connected to pump via hose. Then when installing, install the thermostat to pump hose on the pump only, put the pump in the cavity and connect the main hose. Then you can put the thermostat in place and attach the thermostat to pump hose. Don't bolt it to the thermostat until you get various hoses connected. Remember to leave those 2 frontmost hoses off until you bolt in the pump. Final comment - when removing the wire connector to the thermostat I had to use screwdriver and needlenose to effectively break apart the recepticle part on the thermostat - it was crudded up pretty bad.
Hey, first off thank you very much for this video, helped me throughout the whole process. I did everything exactly how you said, but I have x-drive so a little bit more challenging. However, the pump test failed. No coolant was jetting into the reservoir. Any ideas what else could be the issue? I did the test before and saw nothing so I figured has to be the pump, please any help greatly appreciated.
There is a fuse that can be burnt, but it’s easy to miss a step so here it goes just for you: 1. Ignition on 2. Heater to max heat 3. Step on gas pedal for about 10 sec Don’t close the door
Great video? I will be watching it again when I go to replace my water pump and thermostat. What if coolant other than the blue coolant was used? Is it ok to just fill up with the blue coolant after any other coolant was drained? Also, what are the torque specs on the aluminum bolts holding the water pump to the block and the sway bar if I have to remove it?
Great video just took out the thermostat my e90 n51 2007 328i . Found a faulty ripped connection to the thermostat connector was culprit . And just ordered oe pump from fcp euro i found a broken impellar plastic blade and waiting on pump to put both new parts and splice new connector in .
@Zeiten Thanks! If I buy the iCarsoft is that all thats needed? What about checking the temperatures after replacing the water pump and bleeding procedure?
You make it look so easy but this is beyond my skill set lol. I can already see me busting a few knuckles open and losing parts 😅😂😂. I really appreciate this video.. lot of respect for those who work on these. Just in case I become brave. Us this the same in the 328i SULEV? (2011)
How many hours of labour did it take you to R&R the water pump & thermostat when you did it yourself? (Just trying to make sure my mechanic doesn't charge me a whole day or something crazy like that). I'm guessing about 2 hours or so?
Awesome video how to replace the water pump. I just replaced the 2 oil filter housing gaskets, 3 pulleys & the serpentine belt now the coolant is leaking somewhere near the thermostat & the pump. My car has barely 70K miles but it gives me one problem after another...😂🤣😂. BMW, the ultimate driving machine as they call it. Buyer beware!!! Consider this your warning!!! Great video just in mind last week really it was easy thanks 👍 , but lol after the install got code, water pump reduced power, I think I messed up on a bleeding process somewhere air in it , can I do the bleeding process again, without changing the fluid again ?
Of course you can bleed the system as many times as you want just provide additional power source, also check water pump connection I doubt you got the code because of incorrect bleeding

@norhelebermj just look at it if the car is at operating temperature with a/c on it should be spinning decently fast, no movement- fan doesn’t work. There is a big 40(50) amp fuse in glovebox compartment responsible for the fan
I really enjoy your videos because it gives me the confidence to work on my own BMW. I just completed this same process on my 2009 328i Xdrive. However, every time the car gets to running temperature the engine light comes back on and the code is always the same, P0597. Any ideas why it would keep coming back on? I replaced both the Thermostat and the Water Pump plus I flushed the coolant using BMW coolant. Not sure what the problem could be. Any ideas?
Seen it before, check the wiring, it is sort of mystery to me, once in a while we see those cars where thermostat fault code just doesn’t want to go away, might be wiring issue might be internal dme issue, but usually doesn’t affect driving at all
Yes. It means you need a new thermostat , did you bleed the system properly ? Using the key in ignition on position hold accelerate or for 10 secs then let the car instruct the pump To auto lees for you , There is a heater inside it which causes the thermostat to open much faster and earlier than it would if it were to wait for coolant heat to expand the wax pellet. The element in your thermostat has burned out. Under certain circumstances the engine computer wants to get the coolant circulating through the rad as fast as possible. You won't have that function until you change the 'stat.
I need some help. 2006 E90 I just replaced my water pump and thermostat and my car still over heats. I try to do the bleed process but it does even bleed. No water comes out. I've checked the fuses under the hood and all good. Please anything will help 🙏🙏🙏
I changed the water pump and thermostat… now the coolant bleed procedure won’t work.. the car turns off a few seconds after I start the procedure… I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Any recommendations??
@@seanpaul3050 sorry for the late response.. just saw the message.. It ended up being the battery. The wipers started going crazy on their own which led me to a forum where a guy had the same thing happen. I charged the battery all day and finally got the system to bleed.
I just paid some guys $300 (just for labor) to replace my E90 water pump and thermonstat, and they assured me when I was picking up the car that they tested the water pump. Got it home, did the pedal down for 10 seconds, and it does NOT pump water. Any ideas on what I can do now? I'm out of money.... 😓
@@Zeiten Yes Sir. The only thing I havent done yet is loosen the screw on the coolant overflow tank. Trying that in a few minutes, and taking a long shot that the water is held up by air in the line.
@@Zeiten Still no water flow, heat on, turned up to 84, lowest fan setting on. Power on without starting, accelerator down for 10 seconds plus. I bought the pump on Amazon, it had good reviews. This was the "AIP Electronics Complete New Electric Engine Water Pump Thermostat Kit". What is really odd though is that the old water pump had likely not worked for many months but no warning ever came up on my dash and the car never went into limp mode. It also never showed up on my phone, using the FIXD app. It eventually blew out the seams of the coolant overflow tank from the pressure. I'm in a bad way since I paid for labor only, and when I picked up the car they lied to me and said they checked the water pump and it was pumping water.
@blockchaineducationmanager5808 first mistake getting any parts on amazon, whatever you got is garbage no matter the reviews, aftermarket pumps don’t last long or i’ve seen those don’t work from the start, pierburg is the right pump (vdo/continental later midels). Don’t blame techs may be it was working for a second but that’s what you get for trying to save a few dollars and getting strange parts. Second, water pump complete failure would definitely show up in dme dtc, expansion tank can crack and blow on its own doesn’t mean your water pump failed
So i installed a new water pump and thermostat from fcp euro and they didnt turn on when i pressed the gas with the heater on and the coolent was just coming out from the top after i turn on the car completely
Haven’t had a chance to work on them just yet still relatively new engine. In my opinion it will be pretty reliable but just looking around i see lots of probably expensive components that will nee d to be replaced, overall engine in general most likely fun and reliable but expensive on maintenance
I have this problem .this code 2E85 electric coolant pump:missing.....i check water pump and working normal .my car no over heat !! ,i cand fine the problem //need help thx

you the man bro
PITA. But it sure beats having to remove the timing belt to replace it.
Great job 👍🏿
Thank you🙌
why would my sway bar be not going back on?
You are doing something wrong
I changed the water pump and thermostat… now the coolant bleed procedure won’t work.. the car turns off a few seconds after I start the procedure… I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Any recommendations??
Is your battery old / weak
@@seanpaul3050 sorry for the late response.. just saw the message.. It ended up being the battery. The wipers started going crazy on their own which led me to a forum where a guy had the same thing happen. I charged the battery all day and finally got the system to bleed.
I’m doing this right now and I can’t get the water pump off I see you had two screwdrivers at the end but I just saw the back of your hands
If you took all 3 e12 bolts and disconnected all the hoses nothing else holds the pump
I wish you would make a video doing the same job on a 535xi.
It’s pretty much the same
And where is lacated water pump fuse ! Wich one is?
Shane from fight tips post quarantine 😂
I just paid some guys $300 (just for labor) to replace my E90 water pump and thermonstat, and they assured me when I was picking up the car that they tested the water pump. Got it home, did the pedal down for 10 seconds, and it does NOT pump water. Any ideas on what I can do now? I'm out of money.... 😓
Did you turn heater on?
@@Zeiten Yes Sir. The only thing I havent done yet is loosen the screw on the coolant overflow tank. Trying that in a few minutes, and taking a long shot that the water is held up by air in the line.
@blockchaineducationmanager5808 not the case for sure, check fuses, all of them, do you know what brand pump was put in?
Coolant? BASF Glysantin G48
What hose the one that need to be replaced is it the one with the flange Mickey mouse shape? And 34:40
Let’s say you did break the hose you said try not to break in 10:17 what’s it called so I could order it lol
Coolant hose (upper radiator hose to expansion tank) here is the part number 17 12 7 618 510
Any reason why the car won’t start the automatic bleeding process?
Blown water pump fuse or disconnected water pump
I need thats parts water pump and thermostat(2009) 328i xdrive ...can you help mewhere can buy that brand .....
The link is in the description
So i installed a new water pump and thermostat from fcp euro and they didnt turn on when i pressed the gas with the heater on and the coolent was just coming out from the top after i turn on the car completely
Check water pump fuse in glove box, fcp euro is not a good source of parts either in my experience
Could you use n52 water pump to n51?? I dont see specific water pumps for n51
Yes, those are absolutely the same
What’s the name of that hose that’s under the expansion tank from 11:43-11:50 ??? Can’t seem to find this hose
17 12 7 548 224 for automatic transmission
17 12 7 548 223 for manual transmission
So should I just replace the whole hose system ?
Because I just want to change that single hose that’s was connected to the coolant tank because mine is leaking from right there
Yep
Checked everything else and that’s the only leak I’m getting if there any other part I can get for that if you give a part number thanks bro
Would the process be any different on a 2006 330xi?
Not really, all the same
@@Zeiten I'm going to attempt this tomorrow and I'll be watching this video! Thank you
Good luck, take your time👍
What’s your outlook on the B58 engine? Has that motor in the 4 series been reliable from your experience?
Haven’t had a chance to work on them just yet still relatively new engine. In my opinion it will be pretty reliable but just looking around i see lots of probably expensive components that will nee d to be replaced, overall engine in general most likely fun and reliable but expensive on maintenance
I have this problem .this code 2E85 electric coolant pump:missing.....i check water pump and working normal .my car no over heat !! ,i cand fine the problem //need help thx
Check electrical plug on the pump
is it same procedure for 328xi?
Yep, no difference basically
How much? Is ur price for that job
950$ parts and labor total
I have the same parts the u show in the video
Contact us via email we’ll talk then
what type of scan tool do you use?
icarsoft b800 v2.0, very capable device
@@Zeiten thank you for your rapid response! I wish i would have viewed your videos months ago when I was attempting to replace my valve cover gasket. Would have saved me thousands of dollars. Mechanic switched out my valvetronic motor for an old one. Said it was bad(the previous one). Also he broke my crankcase breather hose and used electrical tape to fix it and charged me for a new one. I didn't discover until I had to replace my starter.
Do you by your parts locally or do you order them? If you order who do you typically order from?
You are obviously are a Master Mechanic. I like the fact that you do not spend the first ten minuets of your instructional videos playing music and talking about senseless things. you are on point. I will share this your page with as many people I can.
Thank you for the feedback, i feel you, we see lots of cars after “mechanics” like you had, it is painful. As for parts we have our contracts with suppliers, we will be opening our own store very soon and every video will have a link for parts to order from ebay or you can always reach out via email for parts inquiries at zeitenparts@gmail.com and we’ll help you out
Hey where are you mobile mechanic
You don't happen to be in New York are you I could use a good Mobile Mechanic
We are in Los Angeles
Safety glasses bro
I got lost at 13:00
not this way on e93. e93 is wayyy different....
The only difference is that you’ll need to remove reinforcement on the bottom (6 bolts 16mm, and one more that holds it in place also 16mm)
@@Zeiten and the brackets for the steering rack are absent and the rear belly pan and, and, and...
We’ll shoot an e93 water pump w/ thermostat replacement when we have a chance, the procedure is not that different
Fix my car please
Sure if you are in Los Angeles😉
