I just made farro for the first time and it was amazing! I did a sweet version, with one cup of water and one and a half cups of cashew milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, a drizzle of agave nectar, some raisins and topped with dark chocolate shavings. Will definitely be trying out different recipes
I know this is a few years old but I thought I would comment anyway. 1 cup of whole farro rinsed, three cups of cold filtered water, everything in the Instant pot on high pressure for 15 minutes for perfect farro every time, no soaking required. I love it cold on a salad but one of my favorites is turned into taco meat with some chipotle taco seasonings, black beans, cashew cheese, fresh salsa and avocado on a sprouted Ezekiel wrap tortilla. I always have a batch made up in the fridge.
We ave a Farmers market every Wednesday in front of my job. So whatever is available I use and make a large salad for the staff. Last week I made the salad featured in this video. I used Tuscan kale and added tiny mozzarello balls. EVERYONE WENT CRAZY!!! It was such a hit I am still getting compliments and request for a repeat performance!!
Hello Dani....Loved the video. I'm an African American (black dude LOL) and I've recently lost almost 90 pounds on weight watchers! We recently had a receipt that called for FARRO! I was sure I could find it at my WHOLE FOODS STORE here in Maryland but I couldn't! So I settled for it's cousin so to speak RED HARD WHEAT BERRIES....I've never tried either one but to stay on plan I will try the wheat berries first until I find that elusive FARRO LOL! Great video.....this really all started because the receipt called for FRESH SALSA which I like and it was mixed with the FARRO!!!! Thanks.......
i toast mine in a tsp olive oil, than seperate i fried up a little onion, garlic, mushrooms and a little tumeric salt and pepper, than added my homemade veg broth to cook the farrow, once cooked i added the veggies! soooooo good. Thank you for the storage tips and everything that you share daily!
From Trinidad, West Indies. I had discovered farro by mistake in a gourmet food shore. I drizzle olive oil in the pan, add galic, cayenne pepper, a cinnamon stick, cilantro, chives and throw in the farro, mushrooms and roasted silvered almonds which i had cooked before...love it
I've never heard of farro. My wife came home with a bag today, said she bought it on a wim. Your video was very informative & I can't wait to try it! Thank you.
I have used farro in soups and salads but the most interesting thing that I have used farro for is a replacement for bread crumbs. I grind the farro up in a small blender and added to say, a meatball mix, as my bread crumbs. You don't need to use quite as much as you would breadcrumbs because it will soak up the juices. Use about one-third to one-half less.
I tried making Farro, I like it very much! I'm so appreciative of Dani's information and quick video's on the 101- I'm new to much of this! Her video's make it all possible for me to try these new grains, I'm very thankful for her posts!! Thank you Dani! 💕💕😊😊
I love this video. I did not know anything about farro except for the fact that its an ancient grain. I had bought it at Trader Joe's years ago and loved it but did not know any recipes for it. I tried your kale sardine farro salad which I LOVE .
I had Farro once and loved it ! I found it at Trader joes ! It’s the Pearl farro which cooks fast . I finally had to face the music to my high cholesterol and borderline A1c so I need to really be on diet and watch what I eat. Now I thought a farro right away. Maybe it can replace my love for white rice 😅 Thanks so much for the recipes ! I am gonna try !
I tried Farro for the very first time yesterday. I cooked it with my rice cooker with some whole wheat rice. It was super yummy! I would do it again. :) The family also loved it.
I'm in Canada and the first time I went looking for farro (at an Italian specialty market), they gave me what turned out to be spelt - close but not quite the same. The Bob's Red Mill brand now sells the traditional non-pearled farro, so that is what I have been using. I loved the salad idea that was in your video, and as I have been trying to incorporate more fish into my diet, the addition of sardines was really good timing :) Thank you for your very helpful and interesting videos, Dani. They are among the best that I have seen on YouTue.
Thank you so much for sharing this video cause I purchased some by accident and didn't know what to do with it but now I know how to cook it and enjoy it.
Hi Dani ! can you explain what a clean diet is ? I've never heard of it. Thank You . I really liked this video so informative on a grain that you really don't hear of any more. keep making your videos with information you think people might not know of. Thank You for your hard work. 😊
Dani, Thanks for farro 101. "Bob's Red Mill" has bags of farro with ingredients listed as Organic Farro. Not very clear to me which type of farro I purchased. However, cooking directions are: 1. rinse 1 cup farro...add 3 cups water...cook 30 minutes...(or) 2. cover 1 cup farro w/water...soak in refrigerator overnight...drain...add 3 cups water/stock...bring to boil...reduce heat to med-low...simmer 10 minutes. Can't wait to try this as a substitute in some of my recipes calling for rice. Thanks again, Linda
As someone with a Caibbean background I make Farro and Peas using kidney, pgeon or pinto beans. Prepared the same way except instead of rice, I use farro!!
@@JusFaithelz i just watched it & i think she just gave this info in the video. take care & be safe. My bag just says FARRO, & no cooking directions , i got it from amazon .ca
Hi Dani...I love your channel...I am from Mexico and I have tried many of your recipes...all are so good and tasty!!! I bought farro today at my grocery store so I will be making it soon...THANK YOU!!!
Brought some farro home yesterday, so I found your video. I'm going to soak it overnight and try sprouting some first. Thanks for your great video, clearly presented without wasting our time 💛.
I'm glad I googled and found this. Thank you. I loved that. I'm going to buy Farro. Gluten doesn't seem to be good for me but I'll try it because it's good for my belly fat weight loss. 👍🏾
I cooked my farro in a rice cooker with chicken stock (veggie stock if youre vegan). While it was cooking i roasted red, yellow and orange bell peppers along w asparagus. Once farro was done and veggies all roasted i chopped up all roasted veggies and comvined everything in a bowl. While everything was hot I threw some sun dried tomatoes (in olive oil) in. Flavored it with s&p and some fine ghost chili powder. Served with with some sous vide lamb chops. Delicious !!!!!
I just had a healthy choice chicken and feta power bowl. I had to look up this grain because it was so good! Glad I found your video. Will be buying some soon
in my country, there is a popular dish using pearl barely it's called Jareesh on a low heat add some to lamb broth, some salt ,black pepper and stir after the barely cooked add some "laban" which might be buttermilk or use yogurt instead at room temp and stir on a pan caramelize some onion slices and add 1 to3 tsp of lemon juice stir till it gets crispy at the end garnish the dish with cumin and and the onion
I steam sweet potato and kale. Then make a salad with the veggies above, farro, and add a handful of chopped pecans and dried cranberries and mix. Then drizzle a oil free dressing made with orange juice, maple syrup, Dijon mustard and apple cider vinegar. My favourite salad 😋
I purchased a 40lb bag from Bluebird Farms in Oregon. It is the whole Emmer wheat grain. I have never gotten any cooking method to produce anything other than a dense, chewy product. Pressure cooker same result. Latest attempt is in rice cooker, 5 to 1 water to grain with 6hr soak. I will know this evening. Plopped in a whole head of garlic with salt and pepper.
So after I cook my farro I saute onions until they are caramelized I add some fresh chopped herbs and garlic and a little bit of pesto with olive oil and just a little bit of chicken broth. I mix everything together and i stuff extra large portobello mushrooms top them with a little bit of asiago for parmesan cheese put them in the oven at 425 for 20 to 25 minutes. And this is an incredible vegetarian dinner! Add a nice tossed salad and you have a great summer meal!
I am 👀 farro first time because I’m chomping on Whole Foods Tuscan farro with mushroom and dried tomatoes and it is something amazing I’m Armenian and we have our own receipts with farro but this combo is amazing ❤️❤️❤️
I never heard of this wheat before. I'm cooking some tonight. It sounds really good. I guess when cooked properly, it's almost like a rice in resotto. Tender, al dente.
I got whole grain Farro from Amazon all it said on the bag was add 1 c farro per 3 cups of water. Boil 30 minutes and drain. It came out really good :)
thanks for the video; never made it before, going to try it as a side with some chives and lemon verbena from the garden. Will probaby fry some garlic in olive oil and throw that on
I found pearled farro at the local Walmart and have been eating it for breakfast in place of oats, and I love it! It cooks up in the pressure cooker just like rice. I plan to try using it for other meals now.
Never heard of it until now!! But I want to give it a try, looks really good and compared to what it tastes like I will really like it! Thank you for sharing!!
After finding a recipe for Spanish rice using Farro rather than rice (it was very good). I decided to try farro in my favorite No Peek chicken recipe. It was delicious and chewier than rice, which made taste better. I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to use it for a mushroom dish.
I made the sardine salad today using farro for the first time. It was soooo delicious! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe. I will be making the salad on a regular basis! x
I bought bulk emmer because of the nutrition, now looking for new recipes and farro is now my favorite . I was crushing and cooking it as a cereal and trying to make breads . still searching.
OMG Dani, great information & great video too, thank you! I'm going on Oshawa tomorrow , but in the three days between definitely I'm having this delicious salad!👍👏👏👏
I was getting farrow in little bags at Aldi’s but they stoped carrying it. Cooked it in my rice cooker with other grains like Buckweet and Barley and cracked Freekeh and then added Kipper snacks (smoked herring) soy sauce and Dinner served 😊. Still have a bit left in my jar, need more lol. Googled it today, says Meijers has it. Heading to the store
Yes - you can freeze it just like you would brown rice. And 100% sardines would be great addition to a clean and delicious diet - super nutritious, lots of protein and heart healthy omega 3's.
I just bought some farro!! Not really sure which kind I have so I will soak it and cook it a little longer. Going to cook it tomorrow!! No never had it before
2022 summer I have farro and didn’t know how to prep it and I have no idea Variety it is so I will just cook it until it seems cooked. Hoping to have it for adding to salads especially but I’ll check your ideas also bc I was gifted a big bag of it.
Hi Danni thank you for this video, I will try to find Farro and make a salad with it, i got a bit confused as I thought Farro = barley but at the end you mention barley so I realised they are different, if you can , could you do a 101 with barley? Should I cook the same barley like you did with Farro? Once again thank you, love your video and I am always cooking at home along with them! Xx
never heard of this before, but after cooked it reminded me of say oatmeal or some kind of a breakfast cereal. Could you turn it into something like that? add lil milk, sweetner etc... have you ever tried something like that or does it not have that kind of a taste? also would you happen to know a carb count, I'm on a low carb lifestyle so i'm always looking for delicious substitutions, thanks!
YEs could be eaten like breakfast cereal for sure and here is the nutritional breakdown: Nutrients per 1/2 cup of cooked farro: Calories: 170; Total Fat: 1g; Saturated Fat: 0g; Cholesterol: 0mg; Carbohydrate: 34g; Dietary Fiber: 5g; Sugars: 0g; Protein: 6g
actually that's how we cook it at home, and it's so yummy! we just cook the farros and while there's still some water we add milk, then sugar (or any other sweetner) and a pinch of salt, then u let everything simmer till it thicken a little bit ( don't let it thicken too much since it'll get thicker when cold) and TADA!

Can I add vegetables to it? Or is this like a side dish like, potatoes, rice?

Yes - you can freeze it just like you would brown rice. And 100% sardines would be great addition to a clean and delicious diet - super nutritious, lots of protein and heart healthy omega 3's.

hello just watch viedo, I love salad I will try the one you demonstrated. I am a first time Farro buyer and eater.

No, barley is a different grain. However, you can use it in a similar way.
never heard of this before, but after cooked it reminded me of say oatmeal or some kind of a breakfast cereal.
I was thinking the same.
actually that's how we cook it at home, and it's so yummy! we just cook the farros and while there's still some water we add milk, then sugar (or any other sweetner) and a pinch of salt, then u let everything simmer till it thicken a little bit ( don't let it thicken too much since it'll get thicker when cold) and TADA!
thanks for the input, i appreciate it :)
