  • With 381BHP the AMG A45 in the most powerful Hot Hatch of them all. I get it to 60 in the wet/snow in 4.1 seconds !!! This car is more of a Hyper Hatch and I chose the perfect day to put it through its paces.
    It certainly put forward a great case to win my Hot Hatch Series !
    A huge thanks to Mercedes Benz Portsmouth for arranging the car for me. Having the car for a day helped me really get a feel it and helped me create what you hopefully agree is a great film.

    mate, the quality and presentation of your videos is going through the roof! Excellent video, really enjoyed watching. I don't normally sit and watch long videos but this was very good from start to finish. Great stuff mate. The A45 is a really great car, I was tempted to buy it but I really wanted a manual again after my DSG Golf and so I didn't consider it because of that. Look forward to your Type R review...that one was very tempting so I'm keen to see what you think! Keep up the great work mate, you deserve so many more subs.

      The Type R was a riot ! The gear change was as good as I've ever experienced.

    For me the AMG is head and shoulders above the RS in looks and, of course, the interior. Personally, I couldn't live with the RS interior especially. The AMG is expensive but it always feels special too, premium in fact.

    Excellent review again. I have to confess, until last year I was an Audi owner, but I made the mistake of going into a Mercedes showroom and came out with a C class coupe. There was something about the Mercedes interior that sold it to me, same as in your review.

      I love to watch your videos Ped, keep up the good work. I was thinking what about some classic car drives( if you can fix it up), E-Type Jag, Triumph TR2 ,that kind of thing, beautiful machines that would make a whole new series of videos. I know those cars aren't easy to find but they often appear at Goodwood events, maybe a chat with their owners might be worthwhile..........

    Wow, another excellent and entertaining review Peter, thankyou. Have to say the interior looks in a different league to the RS, far more refined and sophisticated. Staggering to think that when I (we) were into hot hatches the good ones made around 120 brake and the modern equivalents are now producing three times that amount.... I like you have never been into Mercedes, but boy this car looks absolutely awesome. Also its great to see some of your other videos are racking up pretty healthy amounts of views and rightly so :)

    Now the next surprise..... Go and try a "A220d AMG Line", or A250 AMG. You will find that they drive and handle almost exactly the same. Same great handling and steering feel, but with less performance. But still a great drive.
    AMG Lines get >> AMG Body kit, Uprated brakes, Speedshift DCT, AMG SpeedSteer steering, Lowered suspension, and specific engine / transmission programming. So they offer a great package at a lower price. Unfortunately you dont get that exhaust noise though !.

    Nice point about them testing every 100th engine....reliable sports car that without the spoiler looks like an amazing sleeper car 👌...A sports car you can drive at the weekend and if the missis wants to come along...there is room and easy to clean and place away for another day 🤔 Ferrari/Porsche performance without all the shite 😉

      +Petrol Ped I can think of worse. I had a BMW 135i coupe before and I have to say that at low revs the sound of that in line 6 took a lot of beating. I wonder if the fact that the RS3 is a 5 pot may bring it out at the top. Problem is it's even more expensive than the A45 and I hated the interior.

    I was filming up there a few weeks back and I'll be there again as soon as my FRS arrives, fantastic roads! As for the A45, I'll take the car that lets me get my left leg involved...pulling a paddle is no substitute for proper driver involvement.
    Keep up the good work!

    • @adamwalters9680
      @adamwalters9680 7 років тому +2

      MarkCup70 yeah f1 drivers always complain about the paddles on f1 cars, they all wish they had more driver involvement that you can only get with a gear stick clutch combination...

    • @MarkCup70
      @MarkCup70 7 років тому

      You've completely missed the point! F1 cars are meant to lap quickly...there's no debate from me on that, paddle shift sequential/dual clutch gearboxes shift faster and more efficiently than manual 'boxes, that's why they use them.
      What they aren't though is involving...you think from pulling a paddle that you're as involved in the driving experience as you would be when using a manual shift?

    • @adamwalters9680
      @adamwalters9680 7 років тому +2

      MarkCup70 100% more involved! For me, actually owning an A45 and using it in real world situations, I can speak from experience. C mode full auto most of the time. When the situation calls for it S+ or full manual Race mode. Your hands do not leave the wheel. Your left leg does not have to muck about with the clutch (free for left foot braking if desired)
      The selectable modes (that are instant by the way not like the laggy mess ford implemented into the focus information screens) make the 45 a nice laid back gt or a track monster at the flick of a switch. You just can't get that in a manual, as fundamentally you will always have to change gear. You have no choice. Dct you get the best of both worlds.
      You can't get MORE involved than with a full auto dct box. You focus so much more and your hand - not having to leave the wheel to change gear = safer faster shifts.
      It's why every new super/sports car has one. The RS would of had one - but then it would have cost the same price as a Mercedes... let's be fair, almost everybody would pick the mercedes if they cost the same. The price is the rs trump card. If it cost 45k with options they would have been laughed at. Especially with that interior.
      Proper driver involvement - move on - manual boxes are dead. They are the slower budget option to keep costs down. Lamborghinis GTRs Ferraris etc. All got it wrong eh?.

    • @MarkCup70
      @MarkCup70 7 років тому

      You need a driver-less car...that's the natural evolution of your argument.
      You'll be even more involved then, eh?
      No, wait...

    Great video and fab channel! Any plans to review the Golf R in this series? I'd be interrelated to hear your thoughts on it as a cheaper alternative to the AMG - since it has 4WD and comes with DSG it seems like a natural comparison yet, like this car, some say it's too composed or well controlled.

    How did the AWD feel being haldex vs. the trick Focus AWD with more rear bias, or your B8 S4 traditional torsen quattro? Try the CLA shooting brake for comparison sake vs. the S4 too please.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 років тому +1

      The A45 felt vey similar to the S4 in terms of grip. The RS did have the option for more rear bias and slip which as I say in the film is something some drivers will want to exploit. There will be more AMGs coming, just need to decide which ones !!

      To be honest although I've driven both I'd need to drive them back to back to give a decent opinion and probably on a track where you can take them beyond their limit, which you just can't do legally on the road. They both felt good and gave that power somewhere to go in both cars :-)

  • @davidtaylor1482

    I think you get the best of both worlds with this car, the bottom line is the Focus is always going to be in your face and lairey, a nice car for sure but then there will be days when you just want to go to work or just keep under the radar, the AMG would be the only one you could take to a funeral and not have to apologise to the widow but when the mood takes you, you could keep up and outrun the focus anyway, it wins hands down

    Another fab video Peter. I might be old-fashioned but I'd like to know where all the manual gear boxes have gone? I know you say you have a manual option but there's nothing like a good gear change and 100% control of revs and gear changes. Admittedly auto gear boxes can change a lot quicker than a manual and Mercedes auto gear boxes are second to none. Lovely car but bit pricey! I absolutely agree with your comments about buying something cheaper and having the same amount of fun. There are lots of cars for sale out there today with 300+ bhp for less than 10 grand and lets face it, how much power do you actually need on UK roads!

Rs3 was a tad quicker, or felt quicker and the engine sound was good, but was too bland inside, well built, but bland and the steering and brakes were naff in my opinion. It squirmed all over the place under heavy braking probably due to the smallish discs on the rear, seem to have to much front bias. The test drive on the A45 was the first time i had driven a Merc and i knew straight away i had to have it. It was real event inside and out. I have been driving fast Vw and Audis for years and avoided Mercs like the plauge but i really think the company is on a roll at the mo. Love my 45, if it had a Type R manual gearbox it would be perfect. Not a big price difference on low milage used Rs Focus (34 to 36.5k) and a low milage, good spec, aero kit facelift A45. 2-3K tops. You get allot more kit and tech on the A45.

      Interesting and I don't blame you. I'm looking forward to getting behind the wheel of an RS3.

    Hey there Petrol Ped, great video of a car that, unfortunately, we don't have here in the States and may never have. If I may offer a little suggestion on the video... background music when you are speaking is too loud and comes off as distracting - makes it hard to hear/understand you sometimes; otherwise, nice camera angles/views and transitions. Looking forward to your next video :-)

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 років тому

      Is it not in the US due to emissions laws ? Thanks for the feedback on background music. I'm still learning and trying new things. The balance of audio levels is tricky. I listen through the video lots of times to check but appreciate it might not have got it quite right. Great feedback and I'll take it on-board for the next vid...Thanks :-)

    • @SonsofSpeed
      @SonsofSpeed 7 років тому +1

      Hey Peter... nothing to due with emissions laws as they do import the AMG GLA45, it has all to do with marketing - Hatchbacks are not big sellers here in the USA, we just can't seem to get enough of SUVs (excuse me while I barf), so Mercedes has decided to skip the North American market entirely with its A-class. Even Audi only imports the A3/S3 in sedan form here. Ford took a big risk finally bringing the RS here, and it seems to be a success as they have completely sold-out so there may be a glimmer of hope that in the future we will start to get these wonderful German hot-hatches!

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 років тому +1

      Interesting ! We do love out hot hatches over here. Our roads are made for them. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that more hatches come over. We spent years wanting muscle cars like the Mustang and we know have those :-)

    Nice car and amazing performance but at an amazing price, for 50K i'd be looking at other sports cars say a Porsche Boxster S 718. I guess what i'm saying is i've never been a Mercedes fan and i never will, it's just personal taste so nothing against Mercs as a whole and i do agree it is an awesome car with a superior cabin to an RS but i would have something else entirely. Love the video Peter and i liked the on board outside the car shots especially.

    Why can't Porsche get 380bhp out of their 2.0 Litre 718 Boxster? and more again from the 2.5 Litre 718 BoxsterS? Great video, I am an Audi fan, not into Mercedes, so looking forward to your S3 review. Had one pass me the otherday and it was lowered, Black with blacked out windows and god knows what exhaust but it was like Thor over taking me :-)

      I think Porsches problem is that if they got more out of the Boxster/Cayman engine the car would start to spoil the 911's party ! I am trying really hard to get an RS3. Watch this space. Just tested the Civic Type R today...be prepared to be surprised !

    fantastic video. you're genuinely expressing yourself while driving and that really gives viewers a taste of what it's like to drive the car. well done!
    By the way , for viewers, i suggest going on a website like carwow or other and build the car that way and you'll certainly get 10 to 15 percent off the price when the different merc showrooms bid against eachother and make the car more affordable.
    From a price perspective though, with the new road tax rules coming into effect, any car with a list price of over £40k will incur a huge amount of additional tax over 5 years to the tune of roughly £1.5k which is a real shame

    The a45 is a great car much better than the s3 and golf r. But don't you find the focus rs impressive considering its a lot cheaper, down on power and is at a disadvantage being a manual vs a dual clutch. Yet despite all this it can beat an a45 round a circuit

      evorobin only in a straight line pal. One trick pony. It cant corner like the Benz or Focus as is proved by lap times all round the world. When Audi offer wider front tyres as option you know the chassis has issues with understeer. Great car the rs3 but understeers like a pig, just like most Audis, i know i've had several.

    • @mossy1314
      @mossy1314 7 років тому +1

      Petrol Ped just wait until they get demos in. It will be faster than the A45/RS focus and lighter than the current RS3 - this will get rid of the understeer. It seems that the A45 will smash the focus RS anyway.
