I absolutely love this! What a great way to change your kitchen without spending thousands of dollars! I've been looking at houses, I'm wanting to move closer to my Children and it seems like the first thing I notice is I would need to redo the counter, backslash and cabinets. I will look at the homes in a whole different way now! Instead of thinking thousands of dollars I'll see a little paint and contact paper! Thank You So Much and God Bless!
Thank you!!! I'm so glad this helps with your search. I know how it feels to look at everything that needs to be done and be overwhelmed. Our house is a major fixer upper. I know I'll remodel the kitchen in a year or two but couldn't live with it any longer! This solution will hold up until I'm ready to renovate. It's been 2 years, it'll last another 2 if it needs to. I've done several little things around the house like paint, stencil the floors etc just to get by until I can come back and do major renovations. It's a fun process! Good luck to you and I hope you find your dream home soon!
Excellent video. I liked your push the paper under the sink rim technique. And my countertop has those metal strips also. I recently purchased the paper to redo my countertops.
Thank you for your input! I was using this editing app with a handful of song options, I found a great music source literally days after publishing this... I'm actually trying to figure out how to go back and redo the music and voice over without having to delete and republish the video. I would actually like to redo several of my first videos audio...
Agreed! The music is louder than her voice. I had to really focus to hear what she was saying and not be distracted by the loud music. But the content is great!
@@staceygordon6540 I've done some research and looks like I can't redo the sound 🤷 I might actually make another video lol. My mom's kitchen might be next!
And thank you 😊 I appreciate all the input, I'm still working on finding my editing style as well as the right volume levels, best places for music etc.
Wow. This is really great information! Thank you. I have been tossing up between using contact paper or epoxy paint. I like the contact paper idea better since it is less messy and more economical.

It's crazy, I was looking at English results for what I should do with my countertop and watched your video and thinking what I should do if you recommend a product that isn't in Germany (where I live) but you held up exactly what I can find at Toom lol nuts. And I just bought the exact same thing.
I have been watching so many videos on this contact paper but I like yours the most. I'm going to get the courage and do my countertops!!!!! I have no artistic creative thumb! 🙄😊
That's awesome Tina! And thank you! I bet you can do it, with or without the creative thumb 😉 it might just take a few practice pieces first but you'll get the hang of it, good luck!
This is a great idea. A cost effective way to update older counter tops. A few things to remember like the tomato based products, but overall, a great idea.

I really enjoyed this tutorial! I used to sew a lot of mine & my daughter’s clothes and the cutting slits for rounded edges, v-necks & squared edges is exactly what seamstresses do to get nice, smooth edges so, this made perfect sense to me! I’m gonna take the plunge & try this in my kitchen since I’m now, unfortunately, on disability and cannot afford the granite countertops I want so badly! Thank you so very much for taking the time to teach us how to do this!!🥰🥰🥰

I watched a few videos, even the ones with using Windex. I prefer using your method. I do not have a craft bone in my body. But, like you, I am a wife and mother. With the whole Stay Home order, I suppose this is a good time to do something to these counter tops. Thank you for such simple instructions. If only our kids would take our simple advise, right?
Thank you, I'm glad you liked this method! I've been using this time at home for the same thing, projects around my house. It never fails, we give them advice then they don't follow it and now there's a new stain on our countertops 😂 good luck to you with your project and your time at home!
Your suggestions on what NOT to do with tomato sauce, hole punctures, etc... all the advise is so helpful. I'm sure in my house my husband will be the culprit to mess it up. One to your seven😛
Looks really nice! I've been putting this off in my kitchen because I wasn't sure how it would look around my top mounted sink or on the rounded corner. You've answered all my questions! Plus you showed me that if you mess up a section, you can easily replace it. Thank you for sharing this! Now I'm inspired to do mine!

Thank you! It's definitely perfect for renters. I'm planning on doing concrete or something like that down the road but had to do something for the time being. I'm happy with it.
Oh my word! That is absolutely GENIUS! If I wouldn’t have known better, I would have totally thought those were actual marble counter tops! This is awesome! 🤩🤩🤩
Thank you so much! Yeah I thought this would be a really temporary solution but it's turned out so well I'll be keeping it this way for as long as possible! Tfw ♥️
You're welcome! I was worried about the same thing when I did mine, I'm glad my trial and error might help with others projects 😊 good luck with yours!
I'll jump!!! I'm going to FINALLY apply the contact paper to my kitchen countertops & backsplash 🤗...before the rolls dry-rot! I want to use several coats of sealant or plexiglass on the counters. Have U thought about doing/using either?
I did think about it but decided not to since I planned on mine being temporary and I can replace small sections as needed. But I have seen others use polycrylic (not polyurethane, that would yellow) just make sure it's kitchen grade if you go that route. Some of them aren't safe to prepare food on. I've also seen people use clear epoxy over the top of the contact paper. If you want to make it more permanent and durable I'd probably go with an epoxy. Good luck with your countertops! I'm sure they'll turn out great!
Love it I been wanting to do this but my daughter cooks and she sometimes makes messes with stains idk how long it would last here thanks for sharing ❤️
Yeah I understand, my kitchen is always a disaster lol. I'm surprised there aren't stains literally everywhere. We've just tried to make a habit of wiping the counters down afterwards. Maybe you could do a darker contact paper? I couldn't believe how many options there are.
That's brilliant! Have you had to replace any of the clear contact paper where it's stained? Just curious if it will peel up without damaging the contact paper underneath. I am going to try that though!
Thank you! I did a follow up video on this if you want to check it out and I believe I showed the overlapping areas better in that one. I only overlap the pieces by about 1-4 or 1/2 inch. That's just enough to make sure the old counter doesn't show through and the contact paper sticks to itself really well creating a seal so nothing gets underneath it. It's not noticeable unless you are staring right at it, even then it's not majorly noticeable.
Have you ever tried adding polycrylic as a sealer over the contact paper. I have painted mine multiple times and of course sealed with the poly, but wondered if this wouldent help with durability and shine.
Thank you! I've gotten a couple of suggestions for protection over the contact paper (I haven't tried these myself). You can put clear contact paper over the pattern contact paper. You could use epoxy over the countertop if you want to make it more permanent. I've also heard others have used a couple of coats of kitchen safe water-based polycrylic. Hope that helps!
@@TheNiftyNester thats crazy cause i was thinking the same of the clear contact paper omg.I tired the waterproof sealer the one that is milky and it didnt work at all.I got to redo my counter tops over ...TYSM I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HONESTLY SOOOO MUCH
And i seen a lady on YT use the epoxy and it came out so dope but the only thing bout it is that it take like 2to3 weeks for you to use your tops again. i cnt wait that long at all lol....but its the best to use for a protection.
Your instructions were easy to follow; thank you. I do have one suggestion: delete the background music. It's so distracting. It was difficult to focus on what you were saying, and it quickly got annoying. You do an awesome job; it's the awful background noise. 😀🌸
Just bought the same contact paper to do my countertops! How much of an overlap at the seams did you do? Great video and loved the curved corner solution! My counters are all curved edges so this will come in handy. Thank you.
Awesome, thank you! You don't need much of an overlap, between 1/4-1/2 inch is good. I've found that overlapping keeps it from peeling up at all and it looks less like a seam. I'm so glad you found this tutorial helpful, and you'll love that brand of contact paper. It's my favorite. Good luck and let me know how it goes! Also if you run in to any issues feel free to ask.
This looks amazing, what a great idea! Thanks so much for the tutorial, the countertops look beautiful. Just subscribed looking forward to following your channel hope we can stay connected 💕🥰
Thank you so much! I'm so happy with my countertops and it's great to get all this feedback 😊 thanks for your support and I'll go check your channel out right now!
Thank you! I believe I bought 5 or 6 rolls, I had some left over. I did my entire kitchen, bar and backsplash with that. It took me a couple days, I just spent the evening after work working on it. I could've done it in one day if I had waited for a day off work to do it.
Thank you! Yes it will stick to granite and any other polished stone finish. If your edges are more detailed it might just take a little more work to contour that contact paper around the edges of the counter.
That's a great question! And the first time I think I've been asked that, I'll have to add it to my list of responses on my blog. No, it does not. Or at least it has not been any issue for me at all. I have my toaster, coffee pot and ice maker on the counter at all times. I use an electric griddle and a deep fryer occasionally as well without any issues. I know you're not supposed to put heat directly on it, but we have (mistakenly) several times, taking things out of the oven, and it hasn't even left a burn mark.
Thank you! Yes I was, and I do try to avoid it but I've been in a hurry and sat something hot down when I didn't have room anywhere else and didn't have a hot pad on the counter. I haven't had any burn marks or anything else happen as a result.
As far as the "stain" thing...yes you DO need to wipe immediately as it happens. I always clean up as I anyhow when I cook because, it's less time taking after dinner that you need to worry about
I've seen the blow dryer trick but didn't really like the way it looked wrinkled when it shrank up around the edges. It does seem like a good option though.
Where did you get your contact paper from. I only did my back splash and a small 2 person table top with the same paper I got it at the dollar store. Do you think it's ok to put the same paper on my counter tops I rent here and I have been here for 6 years I painted the wall last summer white and did my cabinets a beige taracotta and the paper is the same color but with specks of other browns it looks like stone kinda. I also layed peel and stick flooring on my kitchen and by the way I am 67 so I am proud of my self.
love your video! question, to start, I have a L shape counter. Do you start by laying a long strip, then because the widths, I'd have to do 2 of them. Not understanding how to lay it on a 'L' shaped counter top
Thank you, Lori! It's definitely not a permanent solution but I've had mine for nearly 2 years now and it's still going strong. It has a few flaws, I shared an 18 month update that shows those and suggestions for upkeep if you'd like to check that out.
I am about to do this process with my moms 70 year old kitchen . She does not have any rounded corners thank goodness . I am so nervous about the sink . The space in back and the sides . Do I do the sink in different pieces? The color I chose was a beige marble.
Yeah I would cut a piece a little bigger than needed for behind the sink and install it using the exacto knife to trim it around the sink and a spatula to push it under the lip. Then on the sides you'll do one piece on each side. When you're done and you add the silicone to the sink it'll all be fine and the silicone will keep the water from getting underneath it. I hope that helps, feel free to comment again if you have any more questions. Good luck!
I was worried about the same thing. There isn't a pattern to follow like with wallpaper and the marble pattern blends really well along the seams. I just laid the sections next to each other before applying them to make sure they would blend well and switched them around if I needed to before applying them.
Ive been using this on my counter top for a while. My counter top has the old Formica sheet with gold flecks on it, and it is UGHLLYYY! But really, how do you do the inside counter top corners that are on the outside.
I’ve watched several videos of people applying contact paper and everyone seems to explain it on a straight counter however what happens when your counter is L-shaped and you need to go in a different direction when you overlap do you cut out the underneath piece and how do we match the pattern.
I have a couple corners, mine is a U shaped counter. Sorry I didn't include that. I always run from the back edge of the counter to the front edge. When you get to a corner where it's an L, just run it from the back of the counter on one side and it'll lay over the corner running towards the other side of the L. Then on the other side of the corner run a piece from the back edge down over the front edge, with the edge of the paper wrapping over right where there front corner is. That piece will lay over the bottom of the piece before it. I hope that isn't too confusing. You'll game m have one piece of the corner running side to side and the other back to front but it isn't noticeable.
Good question! It creates a seal around your sink (or stove, if your stove is like mine) and helps to keep the water or anything else from getting underneath the contact paper. Without it the contact paper would probably peel up in those areas pretty quickly.
Great tutorial! A few questions: What about a counter top that has a small bevelled edge? Also, I have heard of some using an additional glue, a spray adhesive, do you have any thoughts on that? Thank you so much!!
Thank you! You should be able to wrap it around the bevel the same way, just making sure to get it smoothed out around that extra angle. As long as you have that area underneath the edge to staple the contact paper down after you've wrapped the edge I don't think you'd have any issues. As far as the additional adhesive I would be weary of doing that unless you're going to be doing epoxy over it and want it to be more permanent. I like the fact that I can replace a small section if it gets stained, and I still haven't had any issues with it trying to peel off. I'm getting ready to post an update within the next few weeks and I'll show how it's held up over the last 1 1/2 years. There is a couple stains but nothing I can't live with, but knowing I can easily pull it up to replace it is a nice benefit.
@@TheNiftyNester How awesome and responsive are you!!? Wow, thank you so very much! So basically we have a very large kitchen with lots of counter space and difference levels, and a high counter for bar stools etc. Husband and I go back and forth as to if it is worth it... he worries that it will not look good. Wishing I could show you pics of the few issues that we are worried about. Is that possible? Could I ever email you some pictures? I really want to do this! I can't thank you enough for this post and your energy and inspiration!! A million thanks.
Thank you, that is so kind of you to say! That it absolutely fine, if you want to email pics to me, cherie@theniftynester.com , and I'll take a look to see if I can help you come up with some solutions.
Sorry I'm just now seeing your comment! I don't think I've seen it done with epoxy but I've seen people use polycrylic. I would imagine epoxy would be a more durable and permanent finish though.
When you were taking the old contact paper off from around the sink, it looked as if it had been underneath the sink rim. Had you lifted the sink when you did it the first time?
I didn't lift the sink but the contact paper is thin enough that when I installed it I was able to push the contact paper under that rim with my spatula and used the exact-o knife to trim it off from underneath the rim. Then I just resealed it with the silicone.
@@TheNiftyNester Wow! I can't believe you replied so quickly! Thank you soooo much. I'm very nervous about papering around my sink and the way you did the front and back slips of paper is what I will do. Also I will try to push the paper under the rim and use silicone sealant. I was definitely going to make it more complicated than it had to be had I not seen your video. Also, your video is so well done, you must be a professional filmmaker and your voice is perfect. Thank you for the kind comment, Natalie! ❤
Excellent instructions! Best I've seen. Thank you!
Awesome, thank you so much! ❤
Perfect tutorial thank you!!!
Thank you!
this is a great idea especially because im renting. great video
Tfw ♥️
Thanks... Mine is missing some end pcs & I wasn't sure I could still use this! 😁 ❤️
You're welcome! I was worried about the same thing when I did mine, I'm glad my trial and error might help with others projects 😊 good luck with yours!
Great job and informative tutorial, however your music was too loud and distracting.
Thank you! And I agree. I'm actually working on an update/ redo on this video. With minimal background noise lol. Thank you for the input.
Please... No Music
This is a great idea! Love the stove covers!
Thank you!!! And those came from Dollar Tree, they have some cute ones!
Thank you! I'm not arts and crafty. I tried this before I found video and I hate the seams!😕I guess I'll put more effort and retry..
You're welcome, and thank you! I'm sure it'll go a lot smoother this next time. Good luck, and I hope it turns out well!
Yes they different ones but I love the white one you did a great job ❤️
Thank you!!! Yeah I agree the white is beautiful
I added clear contact paper over my marble contact paper to help with cooking spills...especially tomato spills
That's brilliant! Have you had to replace any of the clear contact paper where it's stained? Just curious if it will peel up without damaging the contact paper underneath. I am going to try that though!
Thanks so much this was the nest tutorial I found as well!
Awesome thank you so much!!! ❤
Love the end result! Quick question, if you overlapped the large sections, wouldn't the overlapped areas show?🤔
I also wanted to say that I love your shirt! I know that is random but I love the color!
Lol thank you! It's one of my favorites, I got it at torrid maybe a year ago
Have you ever tried adding polycrylic as a sealer over the contact paper. I have painted mine multiple times and of course sealed with the poly, but wondered if this wouldent help with durability and shine.
You are amazing ❤! Thanks for this video 🙏🏼👌🏽
Hello. It's Absolutely Beautiful. Great job. Tfs. Xoxo
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it and thank you for watching 😊
That was fun to watch! You have a soothing voice. Your kitchen looks great!
You are too sweet! And thank you! 😊 it's always hard to listen to myself lol.
Wow I love that Transformation! That is so beautiful. I love those stove Covers! I have the same ones! Favorite dollar tree find.
Thank you!!! I know right?! It's crazy they're so cute and so cheap! We must have similar taste lol.
This is a really nice video. Thanks.
Thank you!
You make it look easy gud work...i want to put a protection on top of the contact paper
Perfect idea. Thank you
You're welcome 😊 and thank you!
Also if you run in to any issues feel free to ask.
look so elegant i like it
Thank you so much!
Very nicely done can contact paper be removed after get damage hope it won't damage counter top
Thank you! It won't damage the countertops at all. You can remove the contact paper easily and it doesn't leave anything behind.
Great Job!! 🙂
Thank you!
Looks great!! Two questions- how many rolls did you buy for your kitchen? About how long did it take you to complete this project?
Thank you! I believe I bought 5 or 6 rolls, I had some left over. I did my entire kitchen, bar and backsplash with that. It took me a couple days, I just spent the evening after work working on it. I could've done it in one day if I had waited for a day off work to do it.
Looks beautiful!!
Thank you! ❤
Love this tutorial...thank you so much
Awesome, you're welcome! And thank you! ❤
Will this contact paper adher to granite? Thank you for the great video!
Thank you! Yes it will stick to granite and any other polished stone finish. If your edges are more detailed it might just take a little more work to contour that contact paper around the edges of the counter.
I meant the hand stapler you used under the tight space under the work top x
Does it matter if the contact paper is under the toaster and microwave?
That's a great question! And the first time I think I've been asked that, I'll have to add it to my list of responses on my blog. No, it does not. Or at least it has not been any issue for me at all. I have my toaster, coffee pot and ice maker on the counter at all times. I use an electric griddle and a deep fryer occasionally as well without any issues. I know you're not supposed to put heat directly on it, but we have (mistakenly) several times, taking things out of the oven, and it hasn't even left a burn mark.
Love ur work. Were u concerned about setting hot items on ur countertop?
Thank you! Yes I was, and I do try to avoid it but I've been in a hurry and sat something hot down when I didn't have room anywhere else and didn't have a hot pad on the counter. I haven't had any burn marks or anything else happen as a result.
Very throughout thanks for sharing
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
As far as the "stain" thing...yes you DO need to wipe immediately as it happens. I always clean up as I anyhow when I cook because, it's less time taking after dinner that you need to worry about
If you use a blow dryer on high heat around the edge where it wraps under the countertop, it won't require stapling.
I've seen the blow dryer trick but didn't really like the way it looked wrinkled when it shrank up around the edges. It does seem like a good option though.
@@TheNiftyNester Thank you for the heads up! I haven't had this happen--yet--but that doesn't mean it won't!
I think it's a fine method and if it works for you that's great! I think it's good to have options.
Best video by far!
Thank you!!!
Wow amazing . Is it still holding on ?
Awesome tutorial A++
Thank you!!! ❤️
Great. Thank you! Music is so loud
I know I wish I could go back and fix it.... thank you for your feedback! I'm going to do an updated video soon with way lower background music lol.
love your video! question, to start, I have a L shape counter. Do you start by laying a long strip, then because the widths, I'd have to do 2 of them. Not understanding how to lay it on a 'L' shaped counter top
Looks great. Does it hold up well?
Thank you, Lori! It's definitely not a permanent solution but I've had mine for nearly 2 years now and it's still going strong. It has a few flaws, I shared an 18 month update that shows those and suggestions for upkeep if you'd like to check that out.
You can just replace it with another piece of contact paper. That’s the nice thing about contact paper.
Exactly! That's what I love about it. It looks great and is easy to fix little mishaps.
Really helpfull, thank you!
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
Thank You
I am about to do this process with my moms 70 year old kitchen .
Good luck!
14:09 Good video. Congrats on your progress, being a small UA-camr is hard. Thumbs Up 👍
Thank you! It is a lot of work getting started but it's a lot of fun as well 😊
My concern is matching at the seams. Like regular wall paper, is there a match pattern to look for?
I was worried about the same thing. There isn't a pattern to follow like with wallpaper and the marble pattern blends really well along the seams. I just laid the sections next to each other before applying them to make sure they would blend well and switched them around if I needed to before applying them.
Ive been using this on my counter top for a while. My counter top has the old Formica sheet with gold flecks on it, and it is UGHLLYYY!
But really, how do you do the inside counter top corners that are on the outside.
I had mine for 2 years now it is the same as yours. It is stained so i am ready to replace it.
It's surprising how well it holds up being as inexpensive as it is. 2 years is pretty good!
Thanks for the video. Toward the end, though, the music became so annoying as I was trying to concentrate on what you were saying.
Hi! What is the purpose/benefit of using the silicone?
Good question! It creates a seal around your sink (or stove, if your stove is like mine) and helps to keep the water or anything else from getting underneath the contact paper. Without it the contact paper would probably peel up in those areas pretty quickly.
Where the sections overlap, couldnt yoi cut dn middle of it and peel back on both side and it would lay side by side butted up together?
Also, you could put a coat of polyacrylic to make it sealed!!
Has anyone done this then set epoxy on top? I’ve read a few comments on other videos, but I want to hear more about it!
Sorry I'm just now seeing your comment! I don't think I've seen it done with epoxy but I've seen people use polycrylic. I would imagine epoxy would be a more durable and permanent finish though.
There do buy the element lids
I got those at Dollar Tree
nice video sister
Thank you!
Thank you so much for making this video to help your fellow humans out! LOVE
Thank you Yogini, I really appreciate your kind words! I've been hard on myself on how I edited this video so that means a lot to hear. I'm glad I can be helpful, I know it's nerve wracking to attempt something new like this. I'm finishing up editing on an updated version of this tutorial and review that I'll have up sometime this weekend and it has a ton of information that I feel like I left out the first time around. It might help to watch that as well if you feel like it. Thanks for watching and for reaching out!
@@TheNiftyNester I can't wait to watch it! Thank you!!!!!!
Where did you get your staple gun from ..I've done my worktops and I need one of these as it's not sticking in some places.. btw great job xx
I got mine at Lowe's, they also have it on Amazon. I think it's just called a manual staple gun. They're not too expensive and they're really handy to have around. And thank you!
Thank you so much xx
Looks awesome!
Thank you so much!
Why do all the diyers have music to drown out instructions?
