It is so fantastic seeing all these people in the audience still kicking on this song. After so many years, it still rocks me of my socks. This band is unbelievable.
Steve Miller told the story of the song in a intervieuw with Mojo november 2012: I got this funny, lazy, sexy little tune, he recalled, but it didn't come together until a party in Novato, north of San Francisco. I sat on the hood of a car under the stars with an acoustic guitar making up lyrics and I'm a joker, I'm a smoker, I'm a midnight toker came out. My chorus! the some people called me the space cowboy and the gangster of love referred to earlier songs of mine and so did Maurice and te pompatus of love. You don't have to use the words. It was just a goof.
It's amazing how much control Steve has. Not going overboard in anything he uses for his music. They are all done just in the right perfection, the right balance. Also I've admired his guitar playing, especially his slide playing (which is tremendous, thank his teacher Les Paul). When talking about talking about classic rock, Steve has every right to be mentioned. Very noted for his innovation especially back then. Special effects that come out and new things, he masters them well.
Look at all the young people in the audience. They weren't even born when this song came out. But they seem to know the words and love the jam. Awsome.
September 15, 1990 - The Steve Miller Band had a UK No.1 with “The Joker” 16 years after it's first release. The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1974. More than 16 years later, it reached No.1 in the UK Singles Chart after being used in "Great Deal", a Hugh Johnson-directed television advertisement for Levi's, thus holding the record for the longest gap between transatlantic chart-toppers.
Saw The Steve Miller Band last night in Vancouver, BC at the PNE. He's 72 years old now and you wouldn't have known it by his energy levels. Fantastic show! He's deservedly in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame - although he doesn't have much respect for it.
Yah, I was there too, with my sons. I was about 9 years old when I heard the Joker and it was great for all of us to hear it live from the man himself. Kids are so spoiled (but they did have a great time).
I love the fact that when I look at that audience we have everything from old to young, from men to women. Seems like they really manage to appeal to all kinds of people.
good song....why does everyone have to be such a critic nowadays? Simple, feel good music is all it is. It stands the test of time unlike a lot of songs.
"i'm a JOKER, smoker, & sometimes member of the BOHEMIAN GROVE." Hmmmmmm ---- Naaaaawwww .... there's something about the new rhyme scheme & meter. Oh well, ABRACADABRA!
Space Cowboy. Picker, Grinner, Lover Sinner. Joker, Smoker, Midnight toker. Sure don't wanna hurt no one. Get my livin' in the Sun. Some people call me Maurice, wah wah.
kind of a weird rendition. This is how I would expect the song to sound if a boy band covered it. 3 voice harmonies, slightly sped up, and the vocals are just too slick somehow....
That's what's ironically funny. If they just put this out today(this specific version) , it would be an instant hit. Saw him live, so impressive. One of the best of the 70s, and all time.
30 years ago I picked up my fist car, gun metal 2lt Capri. And as I drove it away this song came on the radio. Felt like the King of world! Think I might just have this played at my funeral
Over rated ..I was a reporter in the blues festival in Portland...They kicked us out from behind the stage. He didn't want anyone to use photo's unless they paid him for them . Not even personal photo's . I wasn't impressed with the performance !
So friendly and so funky after all these years Steve. You are a credit to American music and I say this as an old Brit who has always admired you and your band since the 1970s when I was a kid.
@TheKidRockfan No offence, but you clearly never have been to a concert in Paradiso in Amsterdam I bet? Ever been at a Stonesconcert in Rotterdam Holland or a Rushconcert or a gig with Alvin Lee, and so on and so on???? People know how to dance and swing everywhere. I saw Ritchie Kotzen in Italy btw, the crowed went beserk, so I realy am wondering what you are talking about, or how old you are and what concerts you went to?
@TheKidRockfan oh and another thing, you should watch the video of Rory Gallagher, playing Bull Frog blues at a french music program, to be found here on YT, that will show you the best swinging crowd you have ever seen, or watch some vids of Rory Gallagher in Montreux, if you like swinging ppl you will realy enjoy it.
Steve is in his 70s, and the youngest members in the audience are singing along and know all the lyrics...
Probably kids of his bandmates or even grand children...Who the hell listens to Steve Miller Band today in his 20s.
@@batman6540I am 19 lol

Sorry Ledger you were great but Steve Miller is the real Joker
40 years later this song is still cool.
It's got the groove, the message and the attitude.
It'll be cool in 140 years too
Still cool in 100000
In 392,000,000 !
5 yeas later
This is just one of the greatest songs to sing way loud.
It is so fantastic seeing all these people in the audience still kicking on this song. After so many years, it still rocks me of my socks. This band is unbelievable.

It's a masterpiece of a beautiful party tune for sure!
It's a favourite of mine since it came out in 1973 :-)
I've heard or read that it was written on the hood of a car at a cottage party, or something like that, in five or ten minutes!

That is a nice story to go with a great song, thanks for sharing Jos.

Youre so Wright! I am with youre meaning
I've never heard anyone call him Maurice.
That actually made me laugh

This song is an Antidepresive therapy :)

It's actually awesome to see a younger crowd there too! Timeless music, Rock and Roll!
Such an epic bass groove, yet everything sound better about this band live
didn't knew Russell Crowe played in a band
Daniel Barrio Garsaball pr Bill Murray ..
He does resemble.

Didnt know Ronald McDonald had an opinion ..respectless fool
For me, it's all about that bass. Really love your peaches, wanna shake your tree.
Vallerie Nikirk i hardly know you
You like thé bass
I think he took the line from an old blues song ,I read that somewhere back in the seventies when the song came out .
This song is the musical equivalent of smoking a joint. Don't anyone crucify me, this is hardly a bad thing. Just some laid back calm cool tunes.
Balls Montgomery completely agree, 7 years later
That's why only marijuana smokers like this song.

Never seen so many hot babes in a concert before.
These are some seasoned musicians. In the very best way. They’re TIGHT and they all rock HARD.
I love the fact that when I look at that audience we have everything from old to young, from men to women. Seems like they really manage to appeal to all kinds of people.

I agree; it's as if people choose to be mean-spirited. Their loss!
Really love your peaches want to shake your trees.... I fucking love that line... would totally get that tattooed somewhere :P

Still love this song. Loved it in the 70's love it now.
"i'm a JOKER, smoker, & sometimes member of the BOHEMIAN GROVE." Hmmmmmm ---- Naaaaawwww .... there's something about the new rhyme scheme & meter. Oh well, ABRACADABRA!

Underrated
@AllHailZeppelin I had so much damn fun in the 70s.
Going from a kid in the 60s to a teen in the 70s was as good as it gets.
Best of best times .. sooooh privileged to grow up with the best music ✌
I used to pay 25 cents to see Stevie Guitar Miller band . They played outdoors for the local students , people's in general. Hard act to follow up.
"some people call me space cowboy " ok time to start dairyfarm in mars 😂
"pupitudes of love " is from a 1954 song by the medallians "the letter"...Erik

His Godfather is Les Paul. 🎸 That is a true story. ✝️ RIP Les Paul, Norton Buffalo.
Miller third favorite after Bono, petty. More involved with his music last 10 years. Now also nicks.
Was war eigentlich, bevor es das Stück gab?
Lmao at 'Bruce Willis drumming'
This is awful. Sounded better in 1974
awful's kinda strong, change channel bro. like it, seems like crowd's havin fun.
Those slides could be more intens, like they used to be. Just let your guitar talk more, Steve.🎸
What does he say to the audience after Peace love and happyness? For Syria and block????
