This song was so ahead of its time. I think if it was released today it would still smash.
I hear it pretty often on the radio lately, was sure it's a 2019/2020 song. Same with Herman's Hermits No milk today.
@@marcinjankowski4432 I was not into this kind of music when I was younger somehow I thought I was betraying my preferred genre as ridiculous as that sounds but a friend played me a remake of this song by Everclear & since then I've loved exploring new & old music.
Timeless
Not really the point of your comment but I always assumed it came out in the 90s, so when I found it it was early 70s I was so shocked
It definitely wouldn’t, but I get what ur trying to say. I’d love it, but they just wouldn’t care cuz rock n roll is starting to die.
What a nice, relaxing song after a long day of living in a society.
Is that a Mosley reference, good sir?
We live in a society...
We live in a period
Amen, bro
The best society in the world that is, westernized capitalism
"The Joker" is one of those songs that never get old.

Thanks NYT, for picking such a well known song for one of your categories.

Right? For once, I actually got purple on my first try. Came here because I haven't listened to this song in forever. Love it.
First time I got a purple connection first haha
I just finished and I had to look this song up. Memories come pouring in.
THE BASS PLAYER IS REALLY GREAT. NOT ONLY IS HE A LEFTY, BUT HE IS PLAYING THE BASS UPSIDE DOWN AND HE ALSO HASN’T CHANGED THE STRINGS AROUND EITHER
Funny how songs come back into your head at the strangest times.
Like to me, at 6 am in the morning
Its called getting older

@@BlindGuardian.Ssj2 I remember days in my twenties when I'd be out of cigarettes but still have smoke. I can remember entire summers smokin' & doing stuff like fishing & playing disc golf. Even had certain holes where you knew people smoked & you'd chill out and smoke with whoever else was in the know & would bullshit around for a time. Good times.
Seen him twice back in the day, once in Dallas and once in Shreveport. Great Band.
“I really love your peaches, wanna shake your tree” is probably one of the coolest song lyrics I’ve heard in my life
I find myself singing this part all the time to myself lol
Sex related?
After midnight

That lefty bass player was kicking some ass.

They will probably like his playing also so I wouldn’t kick them out.
Agreee!!!!!!
That guitar whistle is just on point!
That's what it's called? It sounds AWESOME
Before I saw this video I didn't think it was the guitar not gonna lie.
Thank you Bandle, didn't know this song before
Same here haha
Steve Miller: "Some call me the gangster of love."
Rest of Steve Miller Band: "Nobody calls him that."
One of the greatest songs ever
"Really Love your Peaches want to shake your tree". Love this line
“From the windows, to wall, till the sweat drops down my balls, make all you bitches crawl, ah skeet skeet motherfucker” comes in a close second.
One of the many reasons why I’m so appreciative of Atlantic City NJ in the early 70’s not having a black radio station. I was open to SO MANY artist that widened and deepened my musical palate. Steve Miller, Steely Dan, Manfred Mann, Starlight Vocal Band, The Bee Gees, Aerosmith, Barry Manilow, Blue Oyster Cult, Boston, 10cc, Pablo Cruise etc etc so very grateful for my non biased upbringings. I’m a better man, singer songwriter for it.
I love music !!!! ✌🏿✊🏿🙏🏿🖤

This must be the coolest song of all time. Still it's being played at parties, no matter what age people are, and it's a favorite among troubadours.

@@kevinspy3127 - Too many poor DJs pumping techno beats. I hang with good folks in Norway, and just about every troubadour I know plays the song.
Heard this song at 15 and well 30 yrs later it’s still at my top favs
I've heard this song hundreds of times in my 45 years of life, and this is the first time I've seen Steve's face :)
50 years and still a classic tune
What I love about my African American parents is that they believed in listening to all kinds of music and not just R&B. Back when I was 10 years old, my parents bought an 8-track of the Steve Miller Band. My brother, sister, and I listened to all of the songs on that 8-Track continuously, but The Joker was our favorite. Kudos to this band for making such awesome music that has transcended time. Here I am, 55 years old, and I thought about this song, and I had to hear it. Thanks to UA-cam and technology for allowing us to relive a great part of our childhood through music, movies, and videos.
You just had to make it about race...
Amen brother ! Music has no color 💥
Beautiful!
@@RayJackson88Actually, it was about how their parents DIDN’T make it about race. But I’m sure that goes right over the head of someone with the dogwhistle “88” tacked onto the end of the username…. You’re not slick, troll.
Always about color do i say that when i listen to African American music no same story all the time and my best friend is black grow up
A song released in 1973 that sounded like it's from the 1990s. Steve Miller Band's "The Joker" truly is ahead of its time.

@@peter1mckinnon655 wow. Yeah that’s me right now.

I thought that it was Sublime at first!
Released in 1990 and made number one in the UK.
Can a bass player ever be as cool as this !?! Not only is it one of the most famous bass lines ever, he is playing an upside down bass left handed with total boss vibes!
One of the most underrated singer and guitar players of all time,
Wasn’t even born when this song was made yet feels like a forever song.
The most inconspicuous rock n roller ever. This guy should have been HEAPS more famous than he ever was. A real icon in my book of fame.
Well, his 'greatest hits' album has sold pretty well over the years. His tunes are often used in TV ads. He is pretty far from 'anonymous'.
Still loving this song after all these decades. Keep on rockin' us, Steve!
Great music lives forever!

This brings back some incredible memories...... of course it was the early 70's I was 16...and my memory is a bit um *hazy* from those days.
It definitely resonates with that era and you hear it instantly.

I miss the 70s too. Back then I could eat as much as I wanted without getting fatter. 😀
Blues Skies and Golden Sunshine- all along the Way.
I saw Steve Miller, the greatest missing band on my concert resume, on the water in Southie, circa 2004. He had the entire original cast on stage, including the crazy old hippie who banged on bongos and shook his tambourine and howled at the appropriate moment. I love that guy. The entire evening was one of unbridled spiritual joy. It is one of the great memories of my life. Thank you, Steve Miller. Dance dance dance, just like your grandpa. He lived to 92, and then some.
this was the first album I bought, 12 years old then. Still love the song. The album's long gone.
Steve Miller was 15 when he had his 1st performance with the band and they started for none other than Chuck Berry for $50. He told Dan Rathers he was so excited to open for Chuck Berry he would have done it for free. Imagine Miller for Berry, what a combo.
My dad and I used to sing this song when I was a little girl while making omelets in the kitchen. Maybe not the most appropriate song for a 6 year old to sing, but I loved it. I miss him so much.
My Dad showed me great music like this and in days like today at age 34 I appreciate great music like this. Takes you right back to that moment. So let’s be grateful for those moments.
I can relate completely. 💖

2am, sick with mild case covid, woke to go to bathroom, played my words with friends on my epad, while sitting there, then out of nowhere this song pops into my head! Back in my dark bedroom had to find this song on UA-cam on my phone, to listen to it. Heard it so many times in high school in late 1970s. From a vinyl record. Not once back then could I have imagined ever thinking that someday I'd write the message I just wrote! Half of those words didn't exist in 1970s. Life is weird like that.
I had forgotten how magnificent Steve Miller's songs are. Look for the ballads on his earlier records if you want a chill Sunday morning. A++
