      There are plenty of non-rich people that own Kaleidescape. I would venture to say there are likely more non-rich that on Kaleidescape than rich. We all choose how we spend our hard earned money and what we put priority in.

    I could build a PC gaming/plex server with a RTX 4090 for half the price of this "affordable" player.
    K Scape is great for integrators like dreammedia who are selling complete home theater packages to end clients.
    For the DIY enthusiast, I just dont think theres much demand for this type of product anywhere near this price point. If K scape wants to make tractjon in the enthusiast market, they need to rethink their pricing model.

    • @Zachary_Setzer
      @Zachary_Setzer Місяць тому +3

      Not sure they would ever target the DIY enthusiast market. To my understanding, they only make money on hardware sales.
      The only way this ever goes mainstream is if the studios change the business model and share a cut of the content sales. That only seems likely to happen if/when they stop selling physical media.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Місяць тому +8

      Zachary is correct, their target audience is not the DIYer. It’s for those that either don’t have the time, or do not want to spend the time it takes to build a server, to build a PC, to learn how to set up Plex, and deal with the frustrations that Plex has. Plex is not a great experience.

    I’m so glad they’re starting to make more reasonably priced players, but at $4k this is still far out of reach for most people. And when I say most people I mean most people that are hardcore home theater enthusiasts with healthy budgets. Not the average population. This is for the person that has no problem dropping $15k-$20k on a projector, another $3k on a screen. You’re buying a streamer for which you still have to pay a premium price ($24.99 in most cases, some as high as $39.99) for each movie. I don’t see why it has to be more expensive than one of OPPOs players like the BDP-105. Once they get the price to $2k I’ll start serieouly looking. I have a wealthy friend with one of their players and he even admits it’s purely convenience. With what little difference there is in picture quality I’ll stick with my 4k Blu-ray collection and player. The convenience would definitely be nice though! I will be 100% getting one of they can get the cost down a bit more. If not, oh well I guess unless things change for me monetarily.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Місяць тому +2

      Then you’re not missing out by using physical media it’s going to be essentially the same visually and audibly. But what your friend shares is absolutely correct. It offers convenience and ease of use for the entire family.
      You ask why Kaleidescape is so much more expensive than an OPPO player. Because an OPPO player cannot do what Kaleidescape does. It plays physical disks.

    • @NuttyElf
      @NuttyElf Місяць тому +3

      To me this one isn't even very convenient with only space for 10 movies, unless you have a full 1gig fiber connection. I'm not sure why they feel like they can get away with charging so much for simple high quality hdd storage. the price has gone down incredibly in the past few years yet they charge an extra 5k for additional storage levels.

      @Youthman  Місяць тому

      I’m curious, how many movies do you watch at one time? How many movies do you watch a single day? If it’s over 10, then this definitely is not the product for you. 😀

    • @dragosdobre9479
      @dragosdobre9479 Місяць тому

      @danhorton6182, I understand your reasoning, but I think you are missing an important point (at least for me). If my understanding is correct, with Kaleidescape you will have access to the movies very soon after their cinema release, and you won't have to wait until they are available on Blu-Rays.
      My biggest gripe until recently was that it didn't have Dolby Vision, but it looks like this new player offers Dolby Vision as well. If it was available in Romania and if it would have Romanian subtitles, I would make an effort and buy it. If it was just me, I could watch movies in English, no problem, but for this price I want to be able to watch them with friends and family as well.
      I consider myself a home theater enthusiast, but I don't have a huge budget. The (almost) final form of my setup was achieved after many years (LG 83C2, Denon X3800H, MCA525, Shield TV Pro, 9x 1961 Arendal speakers and 4x SVS SB2000), and I have it installed in my apartment small living room. I mentioned my equipment just to clarify that my setup would be considered very modest by "hardcore HT enthusiasts with healthy budgets" like you said. However, I would for sure buy this thing if it was offered in my country. I know it's still a bit overpriced at 4k, but it ticks a lot of boxes that matter to me, and it would make sense for my usage.
      I am paying for all the streaming services and using PLEX as well, but I would love the convenience of having the movies ready to download anytime early after launch, combined with the very high video and audio quality they're supposed to have. Granted, there is the risk of the company failing, and you don't know what happens to your existing movies.
      Also, about why it's more expensive than a standard player - Kaleidescape pays for the license of the movies and they curate them, while a standard player only plays physical disks. The maker of the player doesn't have other costs, and it doesn't offer a service. I do agree that their storage servers are waaay overpriced, but the player alone makes sense to be more expensive than a standard player.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Місяць тому

      I agree I wish it was available in more countries. I can only assume that’s due to licensing but that’s out of my realm of expertise.

    Great that they’re moving in this direction. But I think it’s a miss as the price is so high that probably the ones that can afford it would already have more of their products already in place.
    And that 1TB, sorry but it’s a joke.. might as well have added 500 to the price to something a bit bigger so you won’t be deleting and downloading on a weekly basis.

    If it's successful, then they might make one with a more sensible hard drive. Surely a 4TB SSD is nothing in a $4000 media player. Better yet, they could allow you to add your own storage. I’m currently building a home and have a home theater room dedicated in the build. I can already tell our home theater builder will recommend Kaleidescape, which is fine, cost isn’t important, but I have some questions. Genuinely asking, but I feel like in the next 1-3 years Apple TV will provide a lot of what Kaleidoscope provides. Already hearing of them adding support for 21:9, and with internet speeds exploding from what was 30-100mbps just a few years ago is now hitting 1GB minimum to 9GB (Google Fiber), I think the next Apple TV will at least be inclined to introduce these features. If the next Apple TV introduced full bitrate, added storage space, what would the point of Kaleidescape be?
    I’m only asking because Apple TV seems like the most future proof of streaming/watching movies, at least for buying. There’s no sign of them falling apart and they do care about the movie experience. I’ve built up my library over 10+ years and it’s nice to see them free upgrade 4K along with adding more features (like the 21:9 for projectors coming up in the fall).
    Understandable on the what-ifs and Kaleidescape still being top dog, but would love to play with the idea that Apple could do this by at least 2026 and what Kaleidescape’s leverage would be after that

    I don't wanna be mean to those guys at Kaleidescape, but proudly announcing such a player in 2024, at this "affordable" price, is kind of ridiculous. Can you even imagine such a great, majestic player, being capable of decoding Dolby Vision and, hold your horses...lossless audio? I'm sorry, but this is quite funny, guys. Most of the mid-tier blu-ray/4k players are capable of doing that, for at least 10 years now. You can get the Panasonic UB820 for what, 350-400 USD? It's Dolby Vision capable and decodes all the lossless audio formats. Even the high-end UB9000 is a real bargain, compared to this wonder of the AV world. So, for what exactly are you paying thousands and thousands of dollars? For the so-called convenience? Well, convenience seems to be quite expensive these days. And, by the way, I wonder which is more convenient: waiting for at least 10 minutes to download a movie or just putting a disc in a "classic" player, in a matter of seconds?

      A recent report indicated that Sony plans to cut up to 250 jobs at its optical media plant, offering workers early retirement in preparation for phasing out its recordable disc production. The company has now confirmed this when it said in an interview with AV Watch that it would cease the development and production of recordable optical media discs, including Blu-ray. Furthermore, the Sony representative said, "We are not considering moving overseas," signaling the beginning of the end of recordable Blu-ray discs for consumers.
      If you use Blu-ray to archive your data, you need to start purchasing recordable BD while supplies last. However, business clients and cinema buffs need not panic yet. "We will continue to sell B2B products by making them in advance, and for consumer products, we will decide on the specific end date in the future through discussions with distribution partners such as mass retailers, but we will continue to sell them for the time being."
      The end of recordable Blu-ray production will reduce the number of options users have for reliable long-term storage of their data. Hard drives and SSDs last an average of five years, while Blu-ray discs could last decades, with some newer optical discs capable of lasting a hundred years.
      Despite their longevity, Blu-ray discs are limited by capacity, with the largest limited to 125GB. While some Chinese researchers were able to create an optical disc format that can store up to 125TB of data, it's still in the research phase and not yet available commercially. This limitation is probably why consumers prefer the convenience of cloud storage for backups.
      "The growth of the cold storage market has not reached our expectations, and the performance of the storage media business as a whole continues to be in the red," a Sony Group spokesperson said. "And we have determined that it is necessary to review the business structure to improve profitability."
      Even though Sony still retains Blu-ray production for corporate customers and the film industry, the future of optical media is bleak, at least for Sony. The spokesperson added, "We aim to continue our business at an appropriate scale in line with the market environment and return to profitability through three measures: (1) the gradual termination of development and production and the reduction of the size of our workforce in the recordable optical disc media business, (2) the reduction of the size of our personnel in the tape media business, and (3) the transition to a single-company structure from April 2025 and the change to efficient operations in line with the scale of our business."

    This is not affordable by any stretch. 4 grand for a player that can only hold 10 4k movies? What? What planet are we living on? The hardware they are using in that player can be had in a mini pc for $150 tops. The hard drive can be had for $50. You can use kodi and your done. You own your movies and don't have to buy into a proprietary system that can go out of business any second and you lose all your movies. If they can't figure out that normal people are not going to settle for this kind of ridiculous pricing then they don't deserve to be in business.

      Honest question, how many movies would you be able to watch in a given day? One? Two? Maybe Three at the most? The Strato V holds 10 movies at a time and only takes 10 min or less to download a movie from your purchased library to the player. Another honest question. Which takes longer. To drive to your local cinema or to download a movie to the Kaleidescape. Affordable is relative to what you are comparing it to. When compared to the lowest tier Kaleidescape system, $4,000 vs $9,000 is affordable.

    • @shanen.6210
      @shanen.6210 Місяць тому

      Time and money is relative. I don't watch that many movies in a day but thats not the point. The company is absolutely overcharging for their product. For what you are buying and what you get it just doesn't add up. Sure there are people that will buy it but there are people that will buy million dollar homes and cars too. If people feel there is value in it then that's fine too. All in saying is there are many options out there for people not doesn't involve paying thousands of dollars for not a lot. I personally don't like any system that is locked down. I fear that buying a bunch of movies from a company that is this niche is a recipe for disaster. I would like to know what happens too my movies that I spent a lot of money for if the company no longer exists? Does anyone know this. I would venture to guess you no longer own those movies. Why do they charge thousands of dollars for hard drive space? This is not logical. Sure charge more for the player if your going to use the studio card to justify the price but don't upcharge for the hard drive space as well.

There are other piece of kit, eg Kaleidescape, that if I was considerably wealthier I still wouldn't stump up the cash for. What it offers just doesn't appeal to me - even if it cost only a hundred dollars. Seriously. Nothing to do with envy of those wealthier than me, I just see it as very poor value for money for a product that I have no desire for in the first place. Enjoyed the video though.

    It is still way too expensive just for entry into this ecosystem. A Kaleidescape, at this point, is just a flex for someone with money who doesnt want to have 4k discs. I'd be interested in seeing a side by side bit rate test of their digital movies and a 4K disc. For now, Plex is still better with a Shield Pro. You can build it for less than $1k and have rips that are just as good of quality.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Місяць тому

      I don't see it as a flex at all. Some people spend their money on car payments. Others on hunting, fishing, or whatever other hobby they have. PLEX is buggy and at times a royal pain in the butt. Everyone knows that. You simply don't have those issues with Kaledescape. And for some, that matters. DIY'ers are willing to endure the frustrations to save money and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

    Finally. I was hoping for an upgraded Strato S with Solid state memory and 2.5gb LAN at a "reasonable" price point. I wasn't holding my breath for Dolby Vision/HDR but am glad for it. This almost checks every box on my wish list to get me to jump into the ecosystem today. The 1gb LAN is a big miss though. Remaining unknowns are the new UI and disk to digital capability???? Hopefully they will consider upgrading the LAN capabilities for those that have fast internet. There actually have been many users who have complained that even with multi gigabit internet services, downloads are well over the 10 minutes Kscape quotes, often 30-60 minutes. (Glad your downloads are faster Michael.) Anyway, maybe a future upgrade will bump to the 2.5gb ethernet spec. If so, it would be nearly perfect! Thanks Michael

    • @gjhunter9326
      @gjhunter9326 Місяць тому

      Watching Jiles McCoy's livestream with Tayloe last night, it answers some big question. First, it will support disc to digital. Fantastic. With it's solid state storage vs the old spinning drive in the Strato S, it will provide much improved download times, even with only a 1gb ethernet port, so perhaps it will download quickly for its purpose. Finally, they understand that users are interested in browsing their entire K Scape library through the player without having to browse through the app, so they are considering making some changes to the UI allow it in the future, which would be great. If you have Terra servers then you get the full UI. So, it seems they have hit the major home run with this product for those of us who want the quality and convenience of the KScape ecosystem but can''t or don't want to pay for a server.

    Im glad they have a lower priced option but the real problem is its still too expensive, for $4,000 i could buy 200 4k discs at an average price of 20 dollars. Again the only people considering kaleidescape already have a system above $20-40k+ and want to upgrade in the near future to a bigger system.
    I would be curious to see a poll on how much the average person spends on theor theater because my guess would be somewhere between 1k-10k.
    For people who cant afford to jump up to kaleidescape i recommend a panasonic 420/820 player and to buy 4k discs, thats what i use at home and its just as good picture and sound quality wise as kaleidescape. Maybe a few movies here and there you get a 5% boost in quality versus the disc but its pretty much 1:1.
    The movie files they display at commercial theaters are getting heavily encrypted hard drives averaging around ~600gb+ per movie. Discs top out near 80-100 GB with double or triple layer blu rays and the biggest movie on kaleidescape i saw was avatar 2 at like 130-150GB. Not even half of what the commercial theaters get
