    4TB. That’s my buy in for a device at this price. I don’t think that’s a big ask, and it would allow them to give us the full KScape UI.

    I would be okay with that price if the storage prices weren’t ridiculous. Maybe you can justify the player prices if you consider their licensing fees and other fees they need to provide the service, but for storage you’re just over paying for hard drives and are being locked into an ecosystem that they control.

      They should just let you install your own SSD if you want internal storage. You can get 4tb drives for like $200

    Glad I found your page man. Your videos are great. I am really thinking about getting the Strato V. I'm in Spotsylvania VA, do you have any recommendations on stores for home theaters out here? I was planning to make a drive to NC to Audio Advice but I haven't been able to do that yet.

      I live in the DC area as well. I buy all my stuff online since there really isn’t a big home theater store that I’m aware of. I know Crutchfield is in Charlottesville.

    There are different Dolby Vision profiles. Kaleidescape is using the best Dolby Vision profile, which is not backwards-compatible with HDR-10. Your player needs a Dolby Vision compatible chipset in order to play Dolby Vision content (generating the right signal over HDMI to your display). The older Strato, Strato S and Strato C players don't have Dolby Vision compatible chips. The new Strato V does. The other thing to note is that you can own a Strato V and purchase/enjoy hundreds or thousands of movies. You can only keep ten 4K movies on your Strato V locally, but you can always delete movies to free up space and download other movies from your Kaleidescape account when you want to watch them.

    Im really excited that in 3-4 years whenever a replacement for the v comes out that it will be likely you can probably pick one of these up for around 1000 and not need to buy a server. Still out of my price range but for the first time i can i see it on my long term home theater journey

    As someone who has been bit by other services where "buying" is not really owning; even if this was $200 I wouldn't buy it. This is just DRM with more $$ and steps. Ideally, Kaleidescape could become a platform selling DRM-free super high quality movies--much like many hi-res audio services where "buying" actually means "owning." I can buy a disc and put it in any player and watch it. I'm not locked into a single company's ecosystem.

    So let me get this straight , i am still confused with this product... i buy the unit which has 1TB of storage which holds as you say ten 4K movies ... ok now what? If your system is full ... can i add a regular external drive to it to expand my storage? or do i have to buy a specific Kaleidescape storage unit? ... Point #2 .. if say Kaleidescape goes under, what happens to all the movies on the unit can you transfer them off the unit say if the unit does not work later on? I see so many companies go under or loose online access ... i would rather buy the movie , rip it and play it with some other form of media player say the Zidoo or others ... at least your in control of your media with backups... here in Canada the Strato V is $5,999.00 um ... no thanks

      I think folks have been talking about the demise of Kaleidescape for years now. They’re still here. I think the point of this device is to keep a handful of movies locally but for the most part, you download movies when you want to watch them. The only storage that will work with this is Kaleidescape storage so you can’t plug any old hard drive into it. All the movies you purchased live in the cloud.

    • @fridaynightgamefilm
      @fridaynightgamefilm Місяць тому

      You're comparing apples to oranges. Kaleidescape is a premium movie service that requires purchasing their hardware as the price of entry to the service. These other options are not premium movie services that let you easily purchase and download movies in theater-grade quality (mathematically lossless audio and visually lossless video), the very second they are available in the home video market.

    At some point I would consider jumping in but as he pointed out in his first video they weren't willing to support an older server. Even if they charged a slightly bloated price to replace a failed hard drive it would be better than having to pay for an all new server. In the podcast he was on with the k-scape rep I swear the rep said on the small single drive servers they do not replace the hard drives out of warranty.

    • @Upscaled_HT
      @Upscaled_HT  Місяць тому +1

      This is the reason I will stay away from the smaller servers if I ever do upgrade my capacity. The strato v is solid state based so I really do think that they will stand the test of time.

      @@Upscaled_HT it is a great sounding and visual system . Premium price . If you have a high end system it is worth it . But for people with modest systems it is likely hard to justify. Unless 4K discs disappear . Which is possible .

    Great info here-thanks! I like your use case of renting given ticket and popcorn prices these days. Having a half dozen all-time favorites or demo titles stored and just renting new titles. The storage prices are laughably absurd. I can't image ever paying that kind of money-even though I could easily afford the Player. Sadly, I only have a 65" tv so this will remain a fantasy...

    I love buying 4k Blu-rays- but am sure that if someone says this way better I have to explore it.
    My issue with this is you pay out all this money and 1 day they go belly up am left with an expensive brick.
    But there is still something special when you buy a 4k bly ray you get that art work etc.
    IS there much difference between a 4k disc to this?
    4k I can but a lot of 4k discs

    • @Upscaled_HT
      @Upscaled_HT  7 днів тому

      It’s comparable to a 4k disc. Some say they see a difference. All I can say is that when I watch movie on it, I know I’m getting probably the best presentation available outside of theaters. The movie file sizes are certainly bigger consistently, which indicates less compression. I haven’t done an AB test. As for the company’s longevity, they have been around over 2 decades. The release of the V was great strategic move to get more people on the service, which can only be a good thing for them. It’s mainly about convenience and the fact that you’re getting the best possible version available at home.

    It seems as though this device automatically deletes movies after a few days so this is not really a great deal unless you are ok with constantly downloading your movies. You will have that KScape GUI that shuffles five movies. For comparison an M2 Max Mac Studio, a much more powerful device, with 4TB of memory is $3,199. The Kaleidescape tax puts the Apple tax to shame! All that said, if this device had 4TB of storage it might be an option. That at least allows some movies and shows you revisit to be kept on the device.

    • @Upscaled_HT
      @Upscaled_HT  Місяць тому

      You set it automatically delete movies or delete videos manually when you need space. I would consider this to be high end gear. Even at this price, I know it would still be a hard sell for a lot of folks.

    9:15 i don't get it when they rippws these films from a Bluray risk which comes with only 4K HDR 10 then how did they get Dolby Vision and 4k SDR ? btw SDR only looks good if its ripped from BLURAY which is 1080p re they using A.I since DVD FAB offers it? if that's the case i'm happy with the original verison which is HDR 10 but few films offers DOLBY VISION though like ALITA THE BATTLE ANGLE which 3D was far better seems to me than Blu-ray.

    Thanks for the video review. For me, this will hopefully be the Kscape device I have been waiting for and the only one I will ever need, assuming it will allow disc to digital and really downloads a full 80-100gb 4k movie in 10 minutes or less over 1gb internet. I was a bit disappointed to see the 1gb LAN instead of the current Stratosphere C’s 2.5gb Ethernet, but if it really is the network hardware architecture holding the old Strato S player back, then maybe 1gb is enough. Apple TV works extremely well with 1gb, albeit with smaller files. Personally, I don’t need or even want to store my movies on a server, I just want to be able to access them from the cloud through an excellent UI. I’m plenty happy to pay for disc to digital for movies I already own that I want to also have in the Kscape cloud and then just buy or rent new releases going forward, downloading on demand when I want to watch, AS LONG AS IT HAPPENS QUICKLY. I also have two displays connected to my surround processor. One is a projector in a dedicated theater and one is a 4k TV in a family room. This will enable me to take advantage of HDR/Dolby Vision when I watch in the family room. So this certainly has the potential to be a game changer.

      If I had not bought my strato s I would be seriously tempted right now. I think people need to understand that this device isn’t to create a big local library. It’s meant to give you the movies you want to watch when you wanna watch them and not have them permanently on your drive. Obviously I haven’t tested the download speeds myself, but I’m sure other UA-camrs will in the future.

    While I still think 4k is a lot, and 3k would be more of a "sweet spot", where this could pay for itself is if you have decided never to go to a movie theater again, as long as the current model of releasing new films shortly to Digital remains. Let's face it, aside from the cost of tickets, a night out to the movies for 3-4 people is easily $100 if you even think about getting popcorn and a soda. It's insane. By the time you watch 30 movies you are already at 3k if you ventured out to the theater. Use this for new movies only, don't try replacing your library and keep up your media storage devices.
