Acrylic pour paint to pouring medium ratio experiment

  • Getting the right acrylic pour paint to pouring medium ratio is a pivotal need for paint pouring. As a journeyman acrylic paint pour artist, I am starting to recognize that I take for granted some of the lessons that I've learned over the past few years.
    In order to remedy that, I've decide to start a segment where I do experiments for commonly asked questions.
    Arteza Paint -arteza.pxf.io/yRa5YN - Use code *LEFTBRAINED to get 15% off your order*. Buy the 14 pouch paint set for every more savings.
    In today's experiment I am going to test what happens when you change the paint to pouring medium ratio. I will be testing with three different ratios for pouring medium to paint; 1:1, 2:1, 5:1.
    We will not be making any adjustments to any other variable, including consistency (although we may do that in another video).

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  3 роки тому +1

      That is usually one of three reasons. 1) Paint is too thick on the surface 2) Top layer of paint is drying too fast. Too hot or there is a draft over the surface of the painting 3) Pouring medium is too thick.
      Some paints like Artist's loft white are known to crack also. You have to put a small amount of high sticky medium (decoart, liquitex, gac 800) with it to make it not crack as much.

    Wow, great experiment & study on ratios.
    I def was too thick for my first couple of tries. And just this past week, I THOUGHT I was about 1:3 or 1:4 ratios , and as I’m mixing and testing the mound, I added so much more medium and waters….. but my painting still turned out more like your 1:1 ratio. I’m still to thick with my mix.
    Using craft paints also…. It’s so weird how thick my has been. ( disclosure, I’m not using a scale yet to measure but I’ve always been able to eyeball measurements because I’ve been cooking for a couple decades and I’m usually pretty good eyeballing volumes. But I know I know if I get a scale it will be easier to mix )

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  3 роки тому

      Absolutely you can Kim. You can have paint in squeeze bottles for days/week/months. Lightly swirl before you use but don't shake as that will create bubbles. Watch our for mildew if you use water. Tap water will last a week or two, filtered/bottle/distilled water will last much longer.

      One part paint, one part Floetrol and almost one part water. The water is variable and should go in last. You really want it thin. If you have seen my consistency video you want it thinner than ever then thin version I give.

    I've a question.. do you have a video describing how much pouring medium (like liquidtex, floetrol) you would use for which brand of paint? I'm thinking ones like.. liquitex, golden, arteza, art deco, craft paint. I think you said in a video that each brand has a different amount of pigment. And that not all paints can handle the same amount of medium. Or do you just go by how thick the paint is? Craft, flowing, med viscosity, and very thick.. each having their own ratio to medium, no matter the brand?

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  Рік тому +1

      Glue and Floetrol dull the color but most of that comes back when you varnish. Craft paint you can only use 1:1 without the poorer quality paints really losing their luster. Nicer paints you can thin 2:1 or more.

    So for a swipe where u want the black to sink leaving the cells or scales look I'd think thicker would be more of a coat where thinner would spider web off but on this experiment the black on the thin covered everything so this represents the density?
    Meaning once it was less dense it began to float on the other colors?
    So if u made ur black mixed on a 1:2 ratio . What would u prefer the colors to mixed at? Of course depends on paint using but in reference to the black do u want it thinner or thicker than your colors

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
