recently discovered you. I love your approach. A great teacher. Very practical. Have been taking oil lessons but am starting on acrylics. I have viewed a number of the utube lessons and learned from all....Tips, colors, brushes, etc. Today I saw making sanitizer to battle the virus...how timely and important..... good for you..... a great public service. I am retired and have discovered both painting and baking to take the worries of the world subside. thank you for doing your part.... looking forward to much more learning with you!!!! Pls keep up the good work. A welcome respite while cocooned with my wife near Portland Oregon. God Bless, stay safe and well!
Morning Clive. Thanks to your recipe it cost just a little over £10 to make 5 litres of Pouring Medium and I can then make 5 litres of white pouring base coat for around £23.50. Since a proprietary brand of Pouring Medium cost £25 for just one litre that represents quite a saving so thanks and much appreciated. Keep up the good work. 👍😃
I use builder’s PVA and it is much stronger and much thicker than ordinary PVA. I have to dilute at least 1:1 with water to use as a pouring medium. Not all PVA is the same.
Hey I’m sorry but this question might be stupid for some but what was the second pouring medium made up of .. I know it’s resin based but what it’s called please ... thank you sorry if this a stupid question
Thanks again for an excellent lesson. I just bought a product at my hardware store for a pouring medium Zinsser latex for thinning paints wish I had seen you tutorial first. I’m going to invest in a big bottle of Elmer glue. You have given us so many uses and economical too. Thanks again Clive. Added to my playlist. 👍🏻🎨👩🏻🎨🇨🇦
Love your videos! Always very informative! Are these flow mediums only used for pouring art or can I paint with these also? What would I need specifically if I want get that buttery easy to blend viscosity paint whilst extending the drying time? Thanks 😊
Floetrol is just PVA and water we used it in the decorating trade for years before some smart person marketed it under its name good for them but we are baffled with products that we can make ourselves these days tho we buy without thinking
Hey love your work. I’m trying to find floetrol so badly but can’t find it anywhere at all. This helped ! But Is there any alternative for vegetable glycerin ?
Sorry Clive I make and use you Acrylic based medium and love it. Thank you but am confused when you say "Now we make Resin based medium" as I cannot see what is different in your mix. You show a bottle and say "Now we mix this" What is this. ?How is it different to to the PVA mix? Probably obvious but it is escaping me. Thank you again
So, I've recently gotten into glass dip pens. I can buy acrylic ink... but this seems like the same thing. Is it and can I put it in a bottle and keep it? Or will it break down?
What can be used instead of glycerine as I want a matt finish. Your videos are very useful. It's good to have someone with the knowledge in the UK as those of us who live here can then source the materials. I have heard that some PVA glues yellow over time. Does this happen with the Wickes brand you were using. Thanks 😊
I'm getting a bit confused with all these different things you can make. Can you tell me, am I right in thinking this Medium is what you would use as a backing wash of colour for your painting to go on top? In other words, it just makes the paint flow more freely? which I'm guessing would also be good for creating fine detail such as hairs in a painting? Sorry for my ignorance. There is so much to take in, and if I'm honest I have been watching so many of your videos, I'm bordering on 'information overload' now :) Just in passing what part of Wales do you come from? I live in beautiful Brecon in Powys.
Clive.... I am subscribed solely on your intro.. Lol love it :) ive been trying to learn to paint on my own. Its been hit and miss.. Acrylic typical problems always drying to fast and i just apply more ahha but this is going to save me from frustration. Thank you sir.
So, which one are you really suggesting for acrylic paint painters. Are you suggesting they use Resin based or latex based flow medium / aide? Still a little confused.
Hi Clive, just made your homemade medium, just have one question please, do you still add silicone to the mix? Or is the veg glycerine doing the job of creating cells? Many thanks, jacky
Love you and I have this a go with amazing results, but...I’m not sure what I’ve done wrong I’ve done the poor on a canvas but as it’s dried it’s lost the sheen? Please help
Hey how many ml is in one drop of vegetables glisten, is it a small drop or a long drop please help is it 2.5ml or 5 ect, sorry if I sound stupid.. ty :)
Hello Clive, can I mix glycerin with resin in order to make cells ? I'd like to keep the archival properties of resin and have the cells at the same time but have no idea what mixing those two together would do Edit : thanks for those cool videos
What a relief that its so simple!! Where I live, options are very limited and/or expensive. Thank you, appreciate it! Will give this a try :D Is there anything else that could substitute for Vegetable Glycerin if I cant find it in stores ??
Thank you Clive. ..appreciate the recipes. Can you please tell me if PVA ACRYLIC is the same as just PVA as some say MATT some says Sheen. In South africa if I ask for PVA WHITE GLUE.....they will direct me to the wood glue or craft glue that are expensive. I have found one that says PVA the other PVA ACRYLIC. No mention of actual Ingredients. Only what it is used for and mostly builders top or under coat indoors or outdoors. I have been scratching my head on what would be the correct one to use. We do not have the brand you use in your video available here. Would appreciate your input. Thank you
Thank you Clive. I love all of your videos. I have learned so much . But I guess it was to early in Florida when I wached the video. I thought you said the pva medium was not resin so it would not last like the other you showed. Please advise. And thank you.
Resin is more permanent PVA is latex based tho both can be used with acrylic resin has a longer arrival property but we won’t be around in 150 years so why worry unless your paintings are going to be in museums or private collections
Amazing, Clive! Odd question: Can I add micas directly to the PVA blend and work with those? I want to create my own color and can't afford to buy (expensive) medium to make the paint blend I want.
Hi Clive, I tried this with the PVA and followed as suggested except for the glycerin, all was going quite well with my primary colours except when I made the white mix , it ended up stringy and didn't flow at all !! Just one long rubbery slop , can you help ? What did I do wrong ?
Hi, Clive! New to your channel, and I really appreciate you sharing this! I'm just gearing up to start flow painting & learning all I can before I start pouring. So many techniques, so many possibilities! Just out of curiosity, would this work to add a sheen to matte paints? A semi-gloss/satin finish at least? I'm starting with inexpensive craft paints so I'm not freaking out about pouring so much money down the drain as I'm dabbling & getting the hang of things, and I grabbed some matte paints for another (craft) project because I liked the colors better than most of the gloss options (...& they were half the price & I needed about 10-12 colors, soooo...). I just tested 3 colors I had to compare & test the sheen, as 2 I had grabbed at a dollar store & they did not state the sheen, so I compared to a gloss white. (Sadly, the purple I LOVE in the bottle, dries very dark--and extremely matte. :-/ ) I'm not loving the matte finish for anything I want to do with the paints, so I'm considering returning those to the craft store for gloss paints, and I can probably get by with fewer colors for that project if I mix a little on my own for different hues/shades. When I only need a very small amount for each project item, it's hard to justify the extra cost for lots of colors. (I was okay being lazy & not custom mixing my colors, which is why I grabbed the matte--more options! D'oh!) I was hoping there was some additive I could use that's not stupid expensive, like more than the difference in cost to buy all gloss paints, as I'm not a huge fan of acrylic spray. And I really don't wanna try to use that on xmas tree ornaments! Ugh! The images in my head are not fun. (Add in how toxic that stuff is to breathe in, and the fact that it's winter & usually too cold to spray outside, but I won't use that indoors, and I'm in a bit of a pickle.) I bought school glue to experiment with as a pouring medium. I can't actually find Floetrol in any of the stores near me that list it & claim it's in stock, so I grabbed glue. So is the main difference between the two just the addition of glycerine? And would glue alone be likely to create sheen with matte paints? I can play with it tomorrow, I suppose, and see what happens. I appreciate any feedback or tips you have! Thanks so much!
Love this info thanks Clive. Can you please tell me if you glazed the flow painting that you show in this video or is the sheen from the "Clive's Floetrol"?
Just the sheen from the home made pouring mediums sold are all basically the same either resin based or latex based we are made to buy them as we think they are better the fact is we can make our own so cheaply
Hi Clive, thank you for sharing the recipes and making this fun art more economical for us to do! Just need to know how long can you store the mixture in a sealed plastic bottle for? Due to the fact that I can sometimes get carried away with pouring, I like to make quite a few colours ready for pouring so if I prepare your recipe in advance , how long can I store it. Here in Australia I have purchased the large bottle of floetrol (it’s more economical) but it sometimes sits there quite a while before I use it up and does not go off. Please advise when you can. Thanks again! Cheers from Aus! 😊
I'm confused. Isn't the fact both are acrylic and mix with water the same thing? when you said resin I thought it was going to be oil based. i understand that resin is what pine trees ooze out and that is not water soluble. at least here in the U.S. resin dissolves with petroleum.
Resin can be oil based or acrylic based Acrylic polymer resin is a plastic based resin which is soluble with water and dryers to a hard plastic resin film Polymer vinyl acetate is a latex based or rubber based product again soluble in water. There are many types of resins Hope this answers your question
100g pva glue
5 drops glycerin
35 - 40g water
Hi, thank u for sharing, you are the only one I found who wants to share simple recepies. Love you!
Your so welcome

So happy it helped
Thank you ever so much. Floetrol is just impossibly expensive. I shall give this a go!
You are an amazingly practical artist. Thank you very much for educating me on all of this. Gonna test it tomorrow and see what it can do.
I use builder’s PVA and it is much stronger and much thicker than ordinary PVA. I have to dilute at least 1:1 with water to use as a pouring medium. Not all PVA is the same.
“It’s time to learn with our friend Clive” you got me there! Subscribed☺️ Thankyou for sharing!!
Hey I’m sorry but this question might be stupid for some but what was the second pouring medium made up of .. I know it’s resin based but what it’s called please ... thank you sorry if this a stupid question
Good stuff. Made some up and have been using it since.
It’s the same as shop bought just we are baffled with science
Hi Clive - Thank you for showing
Thanks again for an excellent lesson. I just bought a product at my hardware store for a pouring medium Zinsser latex for thinning paints wish I had seen you tutorial first. I’m going to invest in a big bottle of Elmer glue. You have given us so many uses and economical too. Thanks again Clive. Added to my playlist. 👍🏻🎨👩🏻🎨🇨🇦
Latex for thinning is just PVA or Elmers thinned with water all basically the same
Love your videos! Always very informative!
Are these flow mediums only used for pouring art or can I paint with these also?
What would I need specifically if I want get that buttery easy to blend viscosity paint whilst extending the drying time? Thanks 😊
Thank you for sharing and educating your followers. You are an amazing source of information and talent. I ❤️❤️❤️ your videos. Stay safe. 😷
Hi! Thank you soo much for this recipe!!! Its soo expensive to buy floetrol!
Nice one Clive Jim from the RF33 You have solved me a conundrum sir. Banging .
Wow, thanks Clive! I have ordered my vegetable glycerin right away...I use so much floetrol and it is so expensive!
Floetrol is just PVA and water we used it in the decorating trade for years before some smart person marketed it under its name good for them but we are baffled with products that we can make ourselves these days tho we buy without thinking
Thank you for weighing your ingredients 🙏
Hey love your work. I’m trying to find floetrol so badly but can’t find it anywhere at all. This helped ! But Is there any alternative for vegetable glycerin ?
The Elmer's Glue-All is what you need, *NOT* the regular school glue. The school glue is prone to making the paint crack. GET THE GLUE-ALL, PEOPLE! :)
It’s the same stuff just different names
Great video. Is there something we can add to the PVA recipe to produce a matte finish?
Thank you for your recipe however what type of resin would I be looking for.
What resin are you using Clive? I don't think you mentioned the brand
Clive, thanks for helping save us money..I have to try this product.
Your welcome thank you
Thanks Clive!
LOVE Clive!!
Thank you so much 🙂👍
Sorry Clive I make and use you Acrylic based medium and love it. Thank you but am confused when you say "Now we make Resin based medium" as I cannot see what is different in your mix. You show a bottle and say "Now we mix this" What is this. ?How is it different to to the PVA mix? Probably obvious but it is escaping me. Thank you again
Is this the equivelant or similar to Golden gel medium??
Is there a make your own pigment, or cheap pigment video in the works? This one was great in its own right.
So, I've recently gotten into glass dip pens. I can buy acrylic ink... but this seems like the same thing. Is it and can I put it in a bottle and keep it? Or will it break down?

PVA can yellow but if mixed with acrylic if won't yellow unsure what else that can be used in place of glycerin
general purpose adhesive (chemifix) it is ok for PVA
Can I use the 'clear' pva glue for this?? Is there a difference between them?
Can I use regular glycerine rather than vegetable glycerine??
I'm getting a bit confused with all these different things you can make. What can we use for cells? Instead of silicone
So, which one are you really suggesting for acrylic paint painters. Are you suggesting they use Resin based or latex based flow medium / aide? Still a little confused.
Resin ... Latex is just a name used there is no latex in latex paint it's confusing
Hi Clive, just made your homemade medium, just have one question please, do you still add silicone to the mix? Or is the veg glycerine doing the job of creating cells?
Many thanks, jacky
Cell are made with silicone
Hi thanks for the receipt can I ask is that enough for pouring mixed do I have to use floetrol any more ? Thank you
Thank you
Thanks for video , I am new to this . Is it better to prime the canvas with this medium?
Hi Clive...Would it be plausible to use aloe Vera gel instead of the vegetable glycerin?
Love you and I have this a go with amazing results, but...I’m not sure what I’ve done wrong I’ve done the poor on a canvas but as it’s dried it’s lost the sheen? Please help
Thank you so much 🌹🌹🌹 im live in IRAN and there is no floerol in here and i spend all of my money to buy some from uk 😑
Your welcome
Thank you very much for sharing
love your theme tune and you lol
With “acrylic resin” you mean “acrylic binder”? Thank you
Hey how many ml is in one drop of vegetables glisten, is it a small drop or a long drop please help is it 2.5ml or 5 ect, sorry if I sound stupid.. ty :)
Can you mix the gloss glaze and the PVA/Glycerine mix to save money?
Will the pva one work on materials such as suede?
Thanks very much. Can I use paint pouring on normal fabrics to make scatter cushions with, or will it crack. Rita
Not sure sorry not tried it
Will this work with jacquard airbrush paint
Thank you !!
Could you use Mod Podge instead? Thank you for sharing
Hi thank u for this lovely video.
Clive, can we make glazing liquid at home?
Sorry no it’s just pure acrylic resin
Hello Clive, can I mix glycerin with resin in order to make cells ? I'd like to keep the archival properties of resin and have the cells at the same time but have no idea what mixing those two together would do
Edit : thanks for those cool videos
👍👍👍
Thankyou !
Hi Clive! Will it keep well if I make it in bulk?
🤗🤗🤗🤗 thank you
Do you have a recipe for the Resin Acrylic Medium? Please pardon my mind :) Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!!
There is no recipe for it as it's a pure resin and cannot be manufactured at home
What a relief that its so simple!! Where I live, options are very limited and/or expensive. Thank you, appreciate it! Will give this a try :D
Is there anything else that could substitute for Vegetable Glycerin if I cant find it in stores ??
Go to a the baking section in the food store it will be the it's used for royal icing to make it shine
Thanks, Clive! Do you have a receipe using pigments?
Not sure what you want
Thank you Clive. ..appreciate the recipes. Can you please tell me if PVA ACRYLIC is the same as just PVA as some say MATT some says Sheen. PVA is PVA just different names by manufacturer go to the DIY store and ask for pva glue used in building it's the same stuff
Hello Clive! Is latex the same as acrylic? If not, what is the difference! Thanx for a great tutorial! 😉👍
There is no latex in latex paint it's a bit confusing but it's not the same as acrylic paint is used for interior decoration
Thank you Clive. I love all of your videos. I have learned so much . But I guess it was to early in Florida when I wached the video. I thought you said the pva medium was not resin so it would not last like the other you showed. Please advise. And thank you.

Amazing, Clive! Odd question: Can I add micas directly to the PVA blend and work with those? I want to create my own color and can't afford to buy (expensive) medium to make the paint blend I want.
Not sure sorry
Thank you, just asking if you use distilled water please ?
Always distilled
Thank you! So Elmer's glue is the same as your large bottle of PVA?
Elmer is PVA
Hi Clive.. what is the substance that used to add a layer to protect paintings that are painted with water colors? Can we make it at home?
Not sure about watercolor protective coats
Awesome and thank you
About how much does the acrylic resin cost please ?
It’s on my website www.clive5art.co.uk
Interesting, thank you so much. Question 😬 my PVA has resin in it do I just add water? The answer is in the video but it just seems way too simple 🧐
PVA is a polymer which is water based and soluble
Question can we use this as flow improver or is there a different recipe for that?
Flow improver is different you can add a few drops of glycerin to water to help the flow
Brilliant information thank-you
Thank you
Hi Clive, I tried this with the PVA and followed as suggested except for the glycerin, all was going quite well with my primary colours except when I made the white mix , it ended up stringy and didn't flow at all !! Just one long rubbery slop , can you help ? What did I do wrong ?
No idea what happened there it works for me maybe the paint your using
Maybe because you left out the glycerin?
Can normal glycerin be ok ? Or does it have to be vegetable
Both seem to work ok
Could I use regular oil or could I leave it out all together?
Oil and acrylic won’t mix
Can you use this for acrylic paint for wargaming figures
That I’m not sure about as I have no experience in war game fighters
Can I use flow aid instead of glycerine?
Its not the same thing really but you can try to see if it works
Thanks Sir
Thank you
Ok, I'm a bit confused. Is this to be used in place of 'flow aid + retarder' or used for "pouring" paint?
It’s used mainly for pouring acrylic
What is the benefit of the glycerin??
It stops the water from evaporation
Hi Clive, can you show how to create DIY glazing medium?
Sorry you can’t make home made glazing medium it’s pure acrylic resin
Hi, Clive! New to your channel, and I really appreciate you sharing this! I'm just gearing up to start flow painting & learning all I can before I start pouring. So many techniques, so many possibilities!

thanks Clive....!!
OFF_TOPIC Q: Do you have any artwork done by your grandkids that you can show us.? It would be nice to see.
I'll will have a look and show in a future video
How does the homemade stuff react in acrylic pouring? Do cells form or do they all blend together in a chaotic way?
It's the same stuff just your made to buy from the store why spend money on things we can make at home
instead of glycerin could one use cooking oil?
But does it make cells?
Cell are made by adding silicone or oil to the mix so yes
Thank you very, very much!
Your so welcome 🙏
