Incredible bunch of musicians - gives me some faith that musicianship still lives!
Just wanted to say thank you for keeping up with at least some modern music. I feel like a lot of people get locked into eras when it comes to music. So much of the draw ends up being nostalgia, when music is something that should always be moving forward. As a result there will always be misses, hits, & hidden gems. I strive to always find the hidden gems & show them some love.
@@simonhodgetts6530 same, when I discovered Knower I found that they'd played gigs close enough for me to go to here in the UK, I missed it by a month or so. But I hope they'll come back. Seeing them live would be absolutely fantastic. I can't see any reason why they couldn't return to here, to play in some of the jazz festivals here. That's nothing new either. Back in the 70s, Led Zeppelin would "sample" other artists. But they just played it instead of using a recording. Like, everybody raves about how great John Bonham's drumming is on Fool In The Rain. But he's simply playing the exact same beat as the beat Bernard Purdie invented. And Bernard Purdie is definitely in the conversation for best drummer ever, his work with Steely Dan on the song Babylon Sisters is astonishing. Steely Dan kept trying different drummers, dozens of them, doing hundreds of takes for each, before letting them leave to bring in the next drummer because it just wasn't good enough. The eventually built the first ever drum machine which was a computer the size of a room that takes days to "render" a beat they've input. So eventually they call Bernard Purdie. And Purdie nails it in 2 takes. It's a legendary story in Jazz because of that. Two takes!? After every other drummer had hundreds!? That's why Bernard Purdie is maybe the best ever. But jazz isn't popular enough for him to be recognised, at least to rock and pop fans anyway. Anyway samples are nothing new. But A tribe called quest, and Nas, used te most interesting samples I've ever heard. They loved to use jazz samples, and it made their sounds unique. And then were incredible rappers on top of that. He's played things like a big gig with an orchestra playing video game music. He heavily uses electronic music devices to create extra sounds to fill out the general vibe and fill in certain gaps, for his main band called Sungazer, because it's a two man band. A drummer, and a bassist (Adam neely is the bassist, and seems to absolutely loathe playing a guitar, but he can still play it very well). So they'll have laptops on stage playing music parts, and the drummer Shawn Crowder has an electronic device on his drum machine that has like 10 different giant buttons on it that he's programmed to make certain sounds when the drumstick hits it, pretty much like how the drummer of Def Leppard managed to keep playing after he lost one of his arms in a car accident, and used a device very much like the one Shawn uses but just more primitive because it was made in the 80s obviously. But yeah between the two of them, each essentially playing two instruments each, they can fill out the sound using the electronic sounds and chords and so on, so they don't even need a guitar or keyboard player. I think Adam Neely wanted to prove guitars are unnecessary but that bass guitars are the best, because it's a sort of running joke with him. But yeah that's what modern jazz is. Sungazer are genuinely bloody amazing. And I've learned an incredible amount of stuff about music theory from his videos. I know he has a masters degree in jazz/music theory, but I believe he also went back and got a degree in teaching, not because he wants to work in a school in a classroom, but because he wanted to learn how to teach complex subjects about music in a way a layperson can understand. If you (you being anyone who's bothered to read my whole rambling unnecessary comment) want to learn a hell of a lot about music, and about showing what being a working musician who works and lives in NYC and also tours the whole country and even flies to other countries to play gigs. All those behind the scenes vlogs about the pros and cons of being a working professional musician is fascinating. But yeah his main type of videos are education about music theory and I've learned a lot. You never stop learning music. It's a futile life long goal to master it, like Sisyphus rolling the boulder up the hill for eternity. If you think you know everything there is to know about music theory, you're wrong. Because nobody does. The study of music theory just simply never ends it's like any other form of art. You have some artists literally on their deathbed, still painting paintings anyway. Because the pursuit of perfection of an art form is a lifelong process because we don't live for centuries. Perhaps, if we don't destroy the world via climate change, there'll be a star trek level of medical technology and humans will be able to live much longer. But that's a long way off. Immortality is probably impossible, and a few centuries of life would still not be enough time for one artists to learn everything there is to learn about their art form before they die
I'll speak up as a bass player, pedal enthusiast, and engineer: It sounds to me like he has a ring modulator (blended with dry signal) going into an octaver (lower octave) to get that sound. That combination gives it that very synthbass sound.
What’s funny is she doesn’t have a particularly strong voice at least from what I can tell here but she’s found her niche in this kinda fast almost spoken word style singing that her voice works really well in.
As someone who's been obsessed with knower since I first discovered them, it is so magnificent watching a proper musician just emote at how sick their stuff is. It's so fun.
As a mediocre musician and massive Louis Cole admirer, it's so fun to see a professional musician discovering him for the first time and being as blown away as I still am every time I listen to this stuff. LC is the absolute greatest.
Unreal, and so tight, all of them…….. I also love how Genevieve uses all of her voice, her little breaths and sounds, to add to the ambience and the rhythmical excitement…. Freaking unbelievable, this piece!
finding louis cole and his knower project on youtube was like putting on an old pair of trousers and finding a £20 note in one of the pockets!! each musician is on point...and every minute of this video is entertaining...obvious to say but this is top tier music art!! the DIY approach is so relatable...wish there was more out there like this!!
It might interest you to know(er) that Rai (the keyboard player) is also (and probably more notably) the guitarist/vocalist for a fairly well established Australian band called Thirsty Merc.
It's interesting, the more I analyze this, the more production I hear Louis snuck in. There's some reverse reverb doubling on Sam's solos, stereo widening reverb on certain verse sections, etc. I think that extra production gives you the feeling of being at a live performance by enhancing the sound.
Knower have a very specific feeling that makes it so inviting to shake your whole body to their music. I have a really hard time finding anything like it
Glad you reacted to this one! Knower is a huge rabbit hole, interested to see if you jump in further in the future. The Louis Cole Live session (F-it up as an example) are worth a look.
Watching musos react to those house sessions never gets old. I love showing them to people. And they're always a thrill to re-watch, they never cease to be breathtaking. Gob. Smacked. Every. Time.
3 years later and I keep coming back to this video purely for the most appreciative stank face I've ever seen. You can tell he's loving this performance, especially with the sort of "come on, get outta here" hand waves. This is a man who really loves music
Oh yeah. While the popular music in the charts etc. is just a tragedy (one chords songs with 2 note melodies and stock beats from DAWs...) over here in the weird part of youtube we got the most amazing music ever recorded. These KNOWER live sesh videos are the most fun I ever had with music. They are truly inspiring. Every time I hear/watch something from them I have this urge in me to start making music to call up my buddy and do a jam session. Just great stuff.
Been following since your first tool reaction back in December but this is my first comment, just wanna say that I love that you're branching out into different music genres more lately, you've turned me on to some great songs I've never heard before either & given me some great new insight into songs I've loved forever now like this one. I'd love to see you check out some Vulfpeck sometime, if you love bands who have fun playing music then you're in for a treat with these guys, highly recommend the song 'cory wong' as an introduction, first song of theirs I ever heard & was instantly hooked
Such a fun-funk band. I discovered them very recently and I had to collect my jaw from the ground when I hear this very song. I really liked your reaction because many reactioners only give the emotional side, but I liked your technical comments as much as the fun faces. You earned one more subscription. Thanks!
Yep ...been following these guys for a while. The keyboardist is an Aussie, and like me he is a grad from the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz course. He is also the lead vocalist/lead guitarist and songwriter of a successful Sydney pop band (Thirsty Merc)! What a freak!
Man! It was so fun getting to watch you react to this. This is one of those songs that I wish I could here again for the first time! There's another track they did in this same session called 'Time Traveler', it's also tons of fun!
I fell in love with this band after watching their original video of this song. I got a chance to meet them and see them play at Aisle Five in Atlanta. One of my favorite live shows ever. They killed it
The bass player may even have an old flange device hooked up to his pick up. This group is insane. I was just recently turned on to them by a friend who is a musician/composer that I used to record with as a vocalist. I love how they phase in reverb. And switch up to jazz fusion. Very tasty stuff.
its always a few weeks in between your videos for me as life just does its thing but its always a refreshing experience seeing what all you've dug into! great work on everything dude!
KNOWER is such a fantastic band! If you're interested in hearing more, I really recommend looking up _Hanging On,_ _Lady Gaga Medley,_ and _When You're Sexy._
This is the BEST reaction I have ever seen. I don't know the terminology this fella is using but his face moves at the same time mine does. I see what the Americans call "stank face" at all the right moments. Cannot understate me vibing with this fella as if I'm showing it to a friend who gets it!
Louis Cole is a crystal clear brilliant gem you can only find digging through the deepest depths imaginable. I remember first finding clowncore then finding the rest of his work. It makes me happy that more and more people are getting exposed to his music because it's so so so good. Clowncore is going on tour and I really wish I could make it live.
There's theories that the sax player and drummer are the two guys from Clowncore, which at this point I don't see how that couldn't be true. Very similar sounds and playing styles.
Rai Thistlethwayte on the keys is a goddamn genius, if you havent heard him before, just go on a youtube bender, he has incredible piano/keyboard skills and a fantastic voice (he also goes by Sun Rai and was originally the frontman for the band Thirsty Merc)
Agalloch - In The Shadow of Our Pale Companion !! You will absolutely love it and there are sooo many things to comment on and pick out for your videos!
This is my favorite band now! Btw, all of these musicians are conservatory trained musicians, make no mistake about it. Its the new wave people!! Oh and double bbttww...Genevieve is also a video producer, so she is heavey on the production of all of their videos in addition to vox. Amazing talent!
Oh daaamn Geebz, you're making me want to say screw it to chores and go make some music. So glad you found this video, it's like the collective intertubes just know the stuff I would recommend if I could think of it in the moment.
Knower and Louis Cole are fairly recent discoveries for me, and oh my god is this opening up new horizons ... I grew up on rock and sing opera professionally. Listening to Knower is humbling and magnificent.
I recently found Knower and as soon as I saw somebody reacting to a song of theirs's for the first time I had to watch it. Because I know my first time I was just overjoyed to hear and see their work
Yes, you are damn right! It is so much fun to watch knower videos and is so amazing to watch you comment on it! ❤️👍 Thanks for that, huge regards from germany!
I really like how Mr Geebz facial expressions switch between pure enjoyment, "NO, what is this witchcraft?!", febrile concentration and "get outta here!".
Knower is solid proof that more jazz musicians need to be making pop music.

This is house music though? Or is it just her voice that's making me feel that way? That's one of the most perfect house voices I've ever heard.

Next one to check out is F it up - Louis Cole (live sesh)
Certainly sounds like it. The first break was their M.O.
Yes their live sesh stuff is legendary
When the horn section hits
@@daroob it's magic, but so is the way he changes his entire synth rhythm for the live sesh cut of Doing The Things.
I’m not a musician and I’m certain that they are clowncore. My father in law IS a musician and is somehow uncertain if they are clowncore. Go figure
They're all insanely talented but Genevieve Artadi.. Her voice will always hypnotise me
What’s funny is she doesn’t have a particularly strong voice at least from what I can tell here but she’s found her niche in this kinda fast almost spoken word style singing that her voice works really well in.
simp. but also: same.
@@bentrod3405 disagree - she's very strong for a soprano
I love the high squeals she makes like at 2:29
She's a great singer, but her own material is a bit hit or miss for me.
You almost pressed pause at the tempo change. Had a heart palpitation.
Sam Wilkes
World's Happiest Bass Player
If my pocket made JNCOs look shallow I'd be a happy person too :)
"Bags of Funk Water for DAYS!" ~The greatest endorsement any band has ever recieved in the history of sound.
Rai Thistlethwayte on keys. Phenomenal player, does a lot as Sun Rai. Worth checking out!
I literally never don't get goosebumps when they go into the faster bridge after the solos. Bags of funk water for days, indeed.
Unreal, and so tight, all of them……..
I also love how Genevieve uses all of her voice, her little breaths and sounds, to add to the ambience and the rhythmical excitement…. Freaking unbelievable, this piece!
Her phrasing and “vocal sound effects” both remind me of Michael Jackson’s vocals
@@sfbsfb yes, absolutely…
finding louis cole and his knower project on youtube was like putting on an old pair of trousers and finding a £20 note in one of the pockets!! each musician is on point...and every minute of this video is entertaining...obvious to say but this is top tier music art!! the DIY approach is so relatable...wish there was more out there like this!!
Louis Cole would really appreciate the phrase, "Full of funk water." Knower and Louis Cole's projects are extremely talented musicians!
They are working on some big band stuff with some legendary jazz musicians... incredible stuff, really hope they continue doing stuff
I was SO EXCITED to see this song in the title! Thank you so much to whomever suggested this one! I love that you enjoyed it, Geebz
I did a couple of times. Hope it was me 🤓
I know I suggested it quite a few times
05:24 the word, the word you're looking for is Clo0wncore.
This is everything modern prog wishes it was.
I legit watch this when I am feeling down. The song, performance and reaction are pure joy!
Yep 👍🏻
@3:27 "Super Chick Corea style funk"... 😎
Sam Wilkes is badass. Check out his work with Pomplamoose too. Another rabbit hole for you.
Not to mention the Jack Conte rabbit hole that should come next!
I discovered this band through Clown core and was blown away instantly.
Love to hear your "insider's" perspective. Thanks for reviewing this!
Any song that features the line "I'm the frosted side of a Mini Wheat" gets my vote!
I am so stoked you reviewed this! Found them a few years ago and love it! Everything in this is great!
This is one of my favorite music videos of all time. Every time I watch it, I notice something new. Also, Louis Cole is a legit musical genius.
Everyone in the group sounds top of the shelf - Bass lines give me goosebumps.
Such a fun-funk band. I discovered them very recently and I had to collect my jaw from the ground when I hear this very song. I really liked your reaction because many reactioners only give the emotional side, but I liked your technical comments as much as the fun faces. You earned one more subscription. Thanks!
“Bags of funk-water for days!” -New favorite quote!
love your reaction dude. 😊
Vulfpeck has to be in the list, now. In the land of ironic, fun and mind-blowing funk they are a must-listen for sure.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Your facial expressions say it all! I can only listen to this awesome track in full stank-face mode!
I love that the crazy thing Louis does on his kick made you crack up the same way it does me. Bags of funk water!
Man! It was so fun getting to watch you react to this. This is one of those songs that I wish I could here again for the first time! There's another track they did in this same session called 'Time Traveler', it's also tons of fun!
I’ve seen them live and YES. They are that tight.
Genevieve has an amazing voice! Probably my favorite vocalist right now
his reaction times up with the song at 2:19 and it has me absolutely dying!!! LOL
01:56 - Love that reaction to the bass part 😄
You reviewing the apartment performance seals the deal. I play this on repeat some days, it’s just so good.
knower was such a gem find for me... just awesome songs and performances
my god this band is so TIGHT. Cole's solo work, and his clown core stuff, is all real good too
I fell in love with this band after watching their original video of this song.
I love your expression while watching, it was exactly how i was.
PLEASE make some merch that incorporates "Bags of Funk Water" I'm in on it!
"It holds water.
It holds bags of funk water."
-Key Of Geebz, 2021
I just discovered this guy... and his band .... AWESOME !!!!!! love it
didn't expect Knower to show up here lol glad we got your input on it : )
KNOWER is such a fantastic band!
YES! YES! THANK YOU! I'm so glad you decided to check out this amazing band! They are the future of music 🎹🥁🎶
Goddamn, you are so fun to watch. Seeing a professional talking about all the songs of my life is simply amazing.
first time i heard this i was making the stank face to hard. i forgot to breathe and passed out.
It feels so good to hear you compliment every musician playing in KNOWER, they really are fascinating and talented to say the least!!
There's theories that the sax player and drummer are the two guys from Clowncore, which at this point I don't see how that couldn't be true. Very similar sounds and playing styles.
Definitely Louis in the clown mask.
I've heard clowncore described as musical shit posting. Something you can't unsee
Rai Thistlethwayte on the keys is a goddamn genius, if you havent heard him before, just go on a youtube bender, he has incredible piano/keyboard skills and a fantastic voice (he also goes by Sun Rai and was originally the frontman for the band Thirsty Merc)
this holds bags of funk water for days
Agalloch - In The Shadow of Our Pale Companion !! You will absolutely love it and there are sooo many things to comment on and pick out for your videos!
They are so good, they are their own thing and it works so well.
'Funk water' just entered my lexicon.
seen this live sesh before from Knower but single second blows me away every single time
Sam Wilkes is one of bassists who love his craft and is a beast at having fun at it
These kids SMOKE. PERIOD. Music origin. PRAT etc…
This is my favorite band now! Btw, all of these musicians are conservatory trained musicians, make no mistake about it. Its the new wave people!! Oh and double bbttww...Genevieve is also a video producer, so she is heavey on the production of all of their videos in addition to vox. Amazing talent!
1:59 best reaction i've seen to a stinky bass line like that. ''get out of here you groovy guy!!''
Knower's Overtime is a video I just cannot stop watching.
I don't think I've ever seen Geebz move this much?? Straight up groovin lol
So glad you got to see Knower and react to it. I know this is a year old vid, you should know they have a new track out. It's BIG!
I recently found Knower and as soon as I saw somebody reacting to a song of theirs's for the first time I had to watch it. Because I know my first time I was just overjoyed to hear and see their work
Aloha. Glad to see you decomposing new bands. Cynic - Veil Of Maya deserves a listen... 😊
Yes, you are damn right!
It is so much fun to watch knower videos and is so amazing to watch you comment on it! ❤️👍
Thanks for that, huge regards from germany!
It holds bags of funk water for days! Love that!
I really like how Mr Geebz facial expressions switch between pure enjoyment, "NO, what is this witchcraft?!", febrile concentration and "get outta here!".
I'm a metalhead, but I can't get enough of these guys. Louis Cole has some awesome live stuff under his solo project on his channel too
Same here. Can’t start my day without Overtime and I’m Tight.
The superpower of a bassist: when he pulls out an insane fill, suddenly everyone lights up 😂
Knower have truly got it going on.
"It holds bags of funk water for days". The most poetic compliment I've ever heard.
I wouldn’t have watched or listened to this music but having you decompose it makes it intriguing on a whole new level.
I also have those headphones wearing them right now. K240! God Bless. Love Knower! Also Clowns in a Van. Louis Cole is out of this world drumming.
