Fixing our rusty stock tank pool

- The galvanized stock tank pool began to rust 18 months after setting it up. Here is what we did to remove the rust and try to protect it. Watch to the end to see the results!
This is the epoxy paint we used:

Is your pool still holding up? About to order this same epoxy
It should be applied thick. Almost squeegee it around and work it into the surface, especially joints.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
hi.. about about to go over this process over the winter... did it end up working out in the end?
Wow.... I had a feeling this would happen when I was following the stock tank pool craze......I bought the plastic version...I appreciate you posting this!
Sure thing! I'll post another update in the next few months. So far the rust is not spreading. Enjoy your pool!
Hi, how is the pool holding up? Would love an update! 😊
thanks for your video! i’m noticing these rust videos popping up, I think we all got our tanks around the same time! I think i’m going to put in a pond liner!
Yep! Good luck with the liner!
Did you find a round one? Most are rectangle and will bunch up!
Maybe that roll on truck bed liner stuff would work
Great video! I’m planning to epoxy the inside of my tank this month. Have you heard any reviews on the “pond shield” product that some people are using?
Thanks! I only did a little bit of research on pond shield. I think it is also a two part epoxy, so probably similar to the one I used.
So if we take those steps with the epoxy prior to ever using the pool, we should be about to prevent rust? Is it feasible to also empty the water when not in use and store it someplace dry? We have a shed it could sit covered in. I can't help but think having it exposed to elements 24/7 helps bring on rusting. Sure it's a pain but knowing you'd just need a few hours to fill and pre for use off season isn't so bad. During summer I would likely leave it.
Yes, epoxy beforehand would be a great idea. Just prevent rust from the start! And yes, you can empty it and store it when not in use. They are meant to be sitting in fields for cattle to drink out of. It's just the chlorine you have to worry about.
What ended up happening after summer? I’m starting my second summer…no rust so far but the bottom of my tank looks like the galvanization is coming off in spots? I’m about to build a deck but worried I may should wait? I’m in Austin too!
Hi . As of June, there are some small patches of rust but it is not spreading. We are going to drain it, remove rust spots and touch up with more epoxy.
Thanks for the video! My Cowboy Pool rusted after about a year of use. I used a brass wire brush attached to a drill to get the rust off. I’m now deciding on a liner and timing. How has yours held up?
So far the rust I saw just after applying the epoxy coating about 4 months ago has not gotten any larger.
@@austinediblegardens Do you think maybe you didn't quite get all the rust from that spot, or maybe it didn't get hit with enough rust inhibitor?
@@sjelliott6660 I think we didn't get the rust in that spot good enough. And the seam of the tank is just hard to seal. All is holding steady for now. Any new rust is right along the lip of the tank where we didn't epoxy.
during your prep did you pit anything back in the seams? If not how has the epoxy held up in the seams? Any leaking?
We didn't do anything 'extra' to the seams and there is no leaking.
Have you thought of using cold zinc paint to regal anime it?
no i haven't
Thinking I'll have to do the same to ours :( Thanks for sharing. What was the cost of the products used?
About $175-$200 for epoxy and brushes, rollers, etc.
Where did you purchase that epoxy?
The link is in the video description.
🎉2023 just tune it. But good stuff on this Chanel
thanks! I need to make more content.
Is there a way to do a color instead of the grey?
Yes, I believe there is a white and blue option.
Epoxy will never work in the long run. Liners are ugly but they work and are inexpensive
I'm sorry to hear about this happening. And here I had just about gotten my wife to give me permission to build one of these.. :D Thoughts on the rust and more so in the joint or cracks. I wonder if there is any flex in the metal there. To say that maybe you did a fine job fixing the pool and coating the tank but when you filled the pool with water to metal flexed and cracked the epoxy there and that is allowing the water to get through and "under" the epoxy?
So far the little rust spots are not spreading at all. So yes, maybe some got 'under' the epoxy at the seams, but that's it and all will be fine. I'll post another update in a few months. So far, so good.
@@austinediblegardens I'm having to fix my stock tank this spring as it started to rust last summer. Thinking of doing the epoxy as well, and wanted to check in on if you have seen any more rust.
@@bethanyboudreau5217 The only new rust since this video is on the lip around the top of the tank where we did not apply epoxy. Everything covered in epoxy is good to go. I'll try to do another video update this summer.
OR........just buy a poly Stock tank!DONE.
I got this tank for free during the pandemic when stock tanks were impossible to find, so I feel lucky to have it.
