I had one of these growing up. We learned quickly which direction to swim around the pool so we didn't take any skin off scraping against the overlaped seam. LOL
My Gramps had 48 head of Beeffalo hybrid and two huge stock tanks. That's two pools and 48 cattle as witnesses to fun you can have creating whirlpools by walking and then running as fast as you can around in circles at the edge until the water and you are going there same speed! Then plop down flat on your back and enjoy the ride.. my bull Redman used to come up to the side and run around as I floated by... Good times. Miss my Gramps.
Bromine is an alternative to bromine that sanitizes as well as chlorine but is less caustic on plumbing and skin. Not nearly as stinky either. We use bromine in our hot tub and it works great. (FYI for the commenter below who asked about salt v chlorine...) BTW, great video. Thanks for sharing!
I put mine buried in the ground 8 years ago. Poly tank. Every pool I’ve had always had the inlet to the filter low and the out up high. No rust, no seems, stays cool and easy care. I put decks around it and a pvc pipe in the ground to put an umbrella in. 8 years and never a problem.
Frank Kelly I had one growing up! Daddy brought an old tank home from his uncles farm, spread a thin layer of cement on the inside, put brick around the outside, added a big old brass drain and me and all the kids from the neighborhood played in it all summer long for many years! Hope to have one in my backyard this time next year!
This was an awesome idea..... wish I wold have known about this yrs ago when I had 5 Newfoundlands. Trying to keep them cool in the summer with out a pool was a chore.
I beat you with this project, had a stock tank pool in 1969!! Of course I grew up on a farm with 100 head of cattle but we had our own stock tank as kids, about the same size as yours!
In Phoenix the pool temp goes about 90’f. Tap water goes 80’f; cold when it’s 115, so just drain it and use the water in the garden and fill it up when you want to use it.
We are in our third year of a stock tank pool. Last fall the pool started to rust. This spring we raptor lined it in blue. the old intex fitting for the outlet cracked upon installation. We ordered new fittings but not intex. The 1.5" intex outlet is now very difficult to find and extremely expensive. I think at this point we have one of the most expensive stocktank pools on the planet. lol Its a dog pool for our 4 boxers so its completely worth it.
Oh no! Sorry. That's good to know about the outlet. We are almost on one year with the pool now and so far, all is good. No rust. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I swear you tube listens to my conversations lol. I just did the same exact thing with plastic stock tank... same gallons too. I was wondering what pump to get for it. Thanks for the video
I would be careful adding anything with electricity to a metal tank filled with water! Nice pool! I need one for my grandkids! I think a plastic one would be perfect for me, because my grandkids would hirt themselves on metal! lol! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for the video! Very informative, and omg the little chicken animation that kept popping up when your hens where talking 😆😆. Thanks again!
Would have been nice to know how much you spent on the entire project. Even better would have been a breakdown of parts, but for the most part awesome durable backyard pool. If I could only talk my wife into letting me do it without constant arguing my life would be complete.
8 ft stock tank runs about $389-399. The pool pumps price depend on which you purchase, warning they are almost all out of stock due to covid and the ones available are 2 or 3x higher on amazon rn. If you level area where you place tank like we did with sand it was $45. There are ways to heat and make a hot tub for winter. Correct ways that are safe. We also lined inside of ours with pond shield epoxy (sky blue color) meant for water use. Turns to a plastic like coating. It was $65. Required prep. These pools last years if well kept.
I actually have a POLY Plastic stock tank, but I use it for the dogs to jump in and out of, and on really hot days, I jump in too...lol, I drain the water and then refill. When I and the dogs use it. The tank will last for years. Great idea!
we had a custom fiberglass stock tank made. the owner (lady) of the stock tank company said granddparents sometimes have one made. 4 feet deep 10 feet almost 2500 gallons. they put a smooth finish and made it dark green we wrapped it with reed fencing. its in the back yard where we can see the kids from inside. we fill it with well water. lasts over a week with no chlorine. then we put chorine floaters in. hang a hose pipe over the willow tree from a harbor freight pump (they call it dirty warter in our case it isnt) submersible to aireate it. we put a plastic sprinkler in the bottom barely revolving. about every month and a half we empty it wash it down. let it dry and start over our granddaughters love it. cost around $1600. the airerating pump was around $60 the sprinkler less than $4.
I liked it, although I can see where there might be a few questions about grounding. On the other hand, I can also see why some people turn off comments on their videos; awful lot of critical folks out there that are not putting out videos for others to learn something. Hope you enjoyed your 'pool' over the summer... :)
Great idea. Now you got me thinking about doing something similar. I wonder if this could be made into a hot tub? Plus is you want to dress it up you could add some cedar with bands.
thats impressive how you just knew how to set up the hardware...i woyld be compketely lost and not even sure if my small town would have the supplies...
@@dieselcowboy777 omg that's scary and good to know. Thanks for the info. I was seriously toying with the idea of using a galvanized stock tank as a tub/shower in my trailer remodel.
dieselcowboy777 you could also line the tank with a tarp or something. I’d line the inside with a tarp and add some kind of outer facade to make it look nicer.
I assume that the discharge fitting would not fit higher up(looks like it may have had enuff area just under the top rail)would have been best for aereation plus if you have a skimmer the skimmer would work more efficient from the ripples on the water. but main thing is the kids are happy!!! GROUND THE POOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You make a great point about aeration. I put an elbow on my daughter's pool and aimed it up slightly to break the return stream open to the air. It really works well and seemed to keep algae growth down some, too.
You better MAKE SURE all of the steel fittings and the tank are GROUNDED/BONDED with min 8 gauge solid copper wire. Use a bonding bar and make sure it all ends with a deep solid copper plated grounding stake. If you don't do this, this is a potential death trap if something conduction electricity hits that steel tank.
From other videos they do rust, paint chips due to it being galvanized metal, but I saw one where she applied pond shield epoxy that is specifically for under water. We tried it and it turns to a plastic like coating for that extra protection. It requires light sanding and and other prep as well. It’s sky blue so looks great.
Curious about choosing this vs a plastic inflatable type?? Is this cheaper? Healthier? Last longer? And I’m sorry you got so much negativity about your hens! I though to myself ‘wow, in that little backyard?’ then i realized you were in Austin and it made perfect sense 😊 I assume it’s gaining popularity. Loved the information you shared! Thanks!
Thanks re: chickens :) Stock tanks are definitely longer -lasting., which will save you money in the long run. These things were meant to last. That is probably the best reason for choosing it over inflatable. I also try not buy plastic products in general and an inflatable pool is just going to end up in the landfill sooner rather than later, and sit there foreeeeeverrrr. As for health benefits, they are both filled with chlorinated water, but I know you can make the stock tank into a salt water pool if you want to go that route. You can probably get deeper above ground inflatable pools which would be nice. I think stock tanks look cooler than inflatable pools too.
Summer in Texas is March - October - ha! And we're currently using it as a cold plunge pool and hope to continue to do this all winter so we're gonna keep it on the pump.

That's how every farm boy in Namibia grew up - it was usually placed right next to the Wind pump in order to fill it up continuously.

Use those noodle pool toys ,cut a slit all the way down them ,then wrap the very top all way around..;)
Too funny.
Was just going to say the same. Dollar General usually has them for very cheap.

I would add that the rubber gasket and O-rings could use a little bit of petroleum jelly. It helps to prolong rot and helps to seal

I’ve been telling all my friends about this they think I’m crazy if you spray with the white flex seal you keep from burning your self
I had a friend years ago do it and in the winter it’s like a hot tub if it is in the sun and perfect for those yucky nites
I was just thinking the same thing... Flex Seal
I wonder about tiling it like you would a pool to keep it from rusting
We've always used a stock tank. Our's is 16 ft.
Bugzy Malone i would love a 16 ft one 👍🏼
How much does it cost for a tank that large
That's the only pool we had when i was a kid but without the pump....
I think i would choose the polymer troughs today instead of the galvanized one
Why would you choose to use the polymer ones instead? I'm just very curious.

Slit a pool noodle lengthways and install on upper lip to keep that from happening!

Austin Edible Gardens I swam in a stock tank many summers when I was little at my aunts place out in the country. Whirlpools were the best!!
I would add a pond liner to the bottom of that or you could even tile the bottom if ya wanted to.
If you just want it for three months out of the summer and you don’t wanna mess with the pump do you just add chlorine
