You're welcome!! Yay! Go for it! My engineer Son in Law thought they were copper when he first saw them. He said "they must have been really expensive".
Oh such a beautiful garden I love how everything is so beautifully manicured and it’s like walking from one room to the other except it’s in the garden thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful video with us
Beautiful! This is the kind of garden I’m hoping to create. Functional without loosing the beauty, a place you want to go to and look at. Your video is so nicely done, I like the music, the text script and flow, and you speak well with details while getting to the point. Nice short video. Thank you for sharing this!
Using toilet bowl cleaner is a really great idea. I have always used cleaning vinegar to etch. Just make sure you use a 100% acrylic primer. You definitely did your homework Momma! I would hire you definitely!!(40yrs paint contractor).🥰
This is just the video I have been looking for! It’s very informative and straight to the point with no extensive chatter. And your garden is absolutely beautiful. I was going to do a stone white look but now I’m definitely doing copper. Also, I just did a sneak peek at your YT channel and you’ve got a new subs there!☺️ Thank you again.
Your garden is spectacular. I love this look on the galvanized tanks. Thank you for sharing your paint method. I just found your channel today after taking a break from working in my own garden. Heatwave!
Thank you for sharing your garden and tips on the containers. I needed an affordable way to convert my garden so I don't have to get so low. Thanks again, you have inspired.
I painted two used leaky stock tanks following the instructions on your video and am very pleased with the outcome. I'm hoping they stand up to the test of time. I've received quite a few compliments from friends and neighbors on how beautiful they look! A few have even taken pictures. I tried to copy a picture to paste here but it wouldn't work. :( Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful DIY project!
Nicole, the stock tanks that I painted copper last year are full of container mix and are planted up at the moment. I think I'll need to wait until I've harvested and we get a hard freeze. Then I'll empty those tanks and power wash as much of the peeling, chipping paint off as I can, then use the power sander on them. I also have one of those stiff wire-brush attachments for my drill, that just might do the trick! I'll just have to see what, if anything, works on that hot mess. With any luck, I'll be able to start over and do it right this time. Thanks for the helpful tutorial! ~Margie
Oh I’m so sorry that they are peeling. What a pain! Yes, i think a power washer is your best bet. Try not to sand into your galvanized metal too much as they could pit. The anti-rust is the best thing about those tanks. We will send positive vibes your way that you’re able to get the paint off easy!🙏
Great instructions! I plan to do this as well. Also I bought lights from the dollar store as you suggested in one of your videos. Could not believe they were at our dollar store in Washington. Excited to see them come on tonight.
You did a great job explaining the process with all the info needed up on our screen! That was a long tedious process but well worth the result! Thanks for taking time to do that! Great look! ~ STEPHANIE
Nichole, I looked at your video to find a way to paint my galvanized flowers that are going to be outside. It's going to be a little bit more of a project than what I thought. Thanks for clear instructions !!! I think it will take more time but will come out better. Your garden is gorgeous and gives me more ideas for what my Husband calls my Florida jungle. ♥️♥️♥️
Oh my, I would love to see your Florida Jungle! I've lived in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Leesburg and Gainesville as a kid (we moved a lot lol). Yes, unfortunately galvanized peels if it isn't prepped. It's so worth the time though! I bet the flowers will be really cool when you get them finished. Thank you so much!
@@planttasticcookinggardenin1561 Nicole, that is totally bizarre that you said Gainesville. That is where I grew up !! I am a graduate of Buchholtz . Home of the Bobcats 1980. I had to move from there. Just too crazy with the University. We moved to Ocala to slow down and that county has exploded. Time for a move. If you are ever in Florida give me a shout. Hi! The Bins are heading into their 3rd growing season so they've been through 2 winters so far, 3 tropical storms, one very snowy winter, and endless branches hitting them from the white oaks above them lol. They are in absolutely perfect condition and look very similar to the day I painted them. No peeling , cracking and very little fading of the paint.
Your garden space is beautiful and relaxing. Does the toilet bowl cleaner remove the galvanized coating which is the rust protection of the stock tank?
Thank you! No, but of course it can compromise its longevity a bit if you don't keep them freshly painted if chipping occurs. What you take away in protection, you add back with the new paint. They still look brand new and the winters have been harsh lately.
Very well stated. You strike me as very intelligent and well read, a pleasure to find when looking for how-to videos. Keep up the great videos and God bless.
Excellent video + technique! I have to say, that's the most crisp, sharp, perfect application of pavers and gravel I think I've ever seen! WHAT is your process for that? Do you have a video? Will you make one next time you lay stepping stones or pavers with gravel surround PLEASE? TY!
We don't have a specific video on that at this time but you can see some of the laying of the stone in this video...ua-cam.com/video/P-cLDODRNI8/v-deo.html
Thank you for that instructional video! I love the look so much I want to try it next year. Did you drill drainage holes? Do you have crushed stone or pea gravel in the bottom for drainage? Thanks again for taking time to explain the painting process. I would never have guessed that surface prep was necessary.
You're welcome! Yes, we drilled extra drainage holes on all of the tanks. No, we do not add any type of stones/gravel/plastic bottles, etc. to the bottom as that would create something called a perched water table (which you already have with the metal bottom). Adding permanent things to the bottom of your containers slows drainage. Yes, prep is necessary, if you don't want them to peel. Thank you!
Great video, with step by step instructions and pic of products. Really enjoyed the views of your beautiful, serene garden. What size stock tanks did you use, I have limited choices near me but would really like to make these too. Thank you.
I was considering stock tanks for a sub irrigated planter, your thoughts? The paint makes them look way better than the galvanized look. Great job, looks beautiful!
You have a Beautiful garden. I bought a galvanize flower bed and it's already painted from manufacture. I do want to paint over it. Do I need to do all the steps you mention or just clean surface and paint over it?
Thank you!! I would call the manufactured to find out what they sealed the paint with. You may need to sand off any coating to get new paint to stick. Give them a call as they are usually happy to help!
Thank you! These tanks measure 4x2 and are 100 gallon I believe. The paint is rustoleum hammered copper: www.lowes.com/pd/Rust-Oleum-Universal-Gloss-Copper-Hammered-Spray-Paint-and-Primer-In-One-Actual-Net-Contents-12-oz/3728983?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-pnt-_-google-_-lia-_-219-_-spraypaint-_-3728983-_-0&placeholder=null&ds_rl=1286981&gclid=CjwKCAjw87SHBhBiEiwAukSeUQ6DiU2qRwwl1QEys53n4H9Mq3HH-6FuqBBZdhQtkE1HAfphbw6k2BoCMWEQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
I have some vintage water troughs that are over 40 years old and are naturally patina. Would would I have to do to prepare them for painting? They are well weathered. I heard you can also use vintage. Dont luke using chemicals do to my allergies. Your thoughts?
This will depend on what the troughs were initially finished with. Unfortunately you can't get away from chemicals as they will be in any paint and probably in the metals themselves. It may be better to leave them alone if they have a good looking patina. I wouldn't want you to get sick. I have allergies too so I know they aren't fun. You could also try a good sanding to remove any left over coating but I would definitely recommend using a good respirator if you are going to do it yourself. Thanks for stopping by! : )
Amazing step by step - thank you so much! Am painting our two stock tanks tomorrow. Can you please explain why you are using toilet bowl cleaner (ex: Lysol Power) and not other cleansers or vinegar as some others do? And how is the paint holding up this year (now 2 years)? Thanks so much!!
Thank you! Unfortunately I can’t compare using other cleansers/vinegar as I’ve always used toilet bowl cleanser as I know it’s powerful enough to strip the coating off. The finish is still flawless after 2 years and we had a really harsh winter with 19 inches of snow in January and they’ve been battered by 3 tropical storms over the years. At 8:00 am I’ll be posting a potager tour video so you can see what they look like! I hope your project goes well!
Hi! If you have ants in your planters then you probably have an aphid problem. Ants protect aphids as they eat the sap aphids create. Look for aphids. If that is the problem spray the plants with a strong spray of water to knock off the aphids. You will have to do this regularly. Another option is to dust the plant with food grade diatomaceous earth when the plant is dry and no rain is expected. You will need to treat the soil at the base too. This will kill any soft bodied insects.
No because then the paint chemicals would leach into the soil, etc. Your plants will let you know if too much zinc is in the soil as they will not grow well. Potting soil is neutral, and plants need zinc to grow. If you plant in the ground, as we all do...you wouldn't believe what is leaching into your soil from neighboring properties from round up to lawn chemicals. There is just no way of getting around something leaching so I do best practices and leave the rest to natures natural filters.
Excellent tutorial. I love the way you didn't waste a lot of time talking about nonsense. Great job!
