As a Millenial myself, I'm qualified to say this: we need to pipe down and listen. They had a golden opportunity to absorb so much wisdom as women and writers. Yet, they seemed to talk past and not to Nikki Giovanni.
The host did say something that ironically stood out about how Millennials and Gen Z throw around the word radical. It seems their self-absorption is rooted in some school of radicalism that led them to believe their voices needed more volume than Ms. Giovanni's. A missed opportunity. Not only for them but for listeners to be enhaced by the wisdom of one of the greatest voices of our lifetime
❇️✨💯
I took note of this, too!
I see that Ms Giovanni (rest in peace to a legend) was enjoying hearing them speak. She seemed content. These are intelligent women who were deeply touched by her work. I’m not completely dismissing your perspective, but I do see that she seemed to be taking it in as well.
In a world full of narcissism and Social media, the secret to finding love is intuition, discernment, and boundaries. If someone does not respect your boundaries, they will never respect you. And they will certainly never have your back.
I love watching Nikki Giovanni talk and her interview with James Baldwin is a gem. My initial impression during the earlier part of the interview, regarding that specific subject, was he was trying to explain to her why black men were the way they were and she was struggling to understand this. But as the interview progressed I realized that she did consciously or subconsciously understand all that. Her frustration was she couldn't understand why we men chose/choose to remain that way; sticking to being as we were/are when it didn't seem to serve us well at home or at work. And when I see today, in my country, the misery in the men who hold on to that mindset like a religion, actually transforming it into some sort of institution, I agree with her that it is in fact incomprehensible. Rest in Peace Nikki Giovanni 👑
Wonderfully stated!
"Transforming it into some sort of institution" ❤
I really love this sentiment and wholly agree with it. I would love if we could reach some kind of happy medium in black relations instead of arguing to be right
I am only 4mins into this video and all I can say is "thank you, thank you, thank you". These kind of conversations are soo necessary and I was inspired by the exact same interview. Ever since seeing it, I've made it a point to talk more to the older generation I come across and the things I have learned have brought me such joy and great learnings.
I'm so glad they gave Ms. Nikki her flowers before she went on to the next plane. I came across her poems when I was younger and my mom said she met her when she was a kid and Nikki told her she loved her braids.
Love honest, educated, literary black women.
I hope she's resting peacefully.
My ancestors come from Nigeria and Ghana, landed in Virginia and Georgia. My people are radical and always have been, she was so wise. She was so big on love. Love and sex has become itemized in today's society and its sad because nobody really knows how to connect anymore. People must listen to her, love is supposed to have your back.
Great interview.
practice it (love) practice loving yourself--twice as happy giving love (and it does feel great to love).
So blessed to have this interview so soon after Giovanni's death :'( rest in peace queen. She is a treasure
YES, SHE was patient with him.
❤
Nikki is Amazing and Beautiful. She taught me how to be patient with the youth with this video.
Rest in Peace Nikki Giovanni
This conversation had great potential, but it was disappointing not to hear more from the late Ms. Nikki Giovanni. It felt like a missed opportunity to share her generational wisdom.
Rest in Power Ms Giovanni,.Will certainly miss you 😔 😢 ❤️
The interviewer talked too much, especially when one is in the presence of A Great, with so much wisdom..a missed opportunity
I agree with all the comments about the younger ladies taking up more time in the interview. I was hoping to hear more from Giovanni, given the interview intro (learning from the older generation). Unfortunately, this criticism would not mean much now; maybe going forward, the host should consider her facilitation procedures. Thank you for the work regardless.
I wish they would have allowed Miss Giavonni to speak more
Right
I agree, the host did the most talking. And I wanted to hear more from the elder 🥺
I love Ms Nikki, so happen to be listening to prolific lovelies.
what a profound interview. thank you! ❤
This made me smile today.
Ms. Giovanni should have been given way more time to speak. In youth, the way you learn is by listening and you both spoke so much about stuff that literally only applies to you all. In the future you should facilitate the conversation not insert yourself. Someone as brilliant as her and with her experience should not have been an afterthought but the focus.
I agree with you…
Right
Agreed.
Agreed
The challenge was the format of 3 very interesting people with very little time. The end came too abruptly, and everyone realizes there was so much more there from all 3. I hope this grows and improves forward into future conversations.
Alert: the subtitles are ridiculously wrong on every monumental line dropped, I will transcribe this if UA-cam won't correct this egregiously inaccurate transcription. Aside from the technical irks, may we continue to magnify this is a moving work, peace eternal be with yals' souls.
One of the greastest ever to do it ❤
WOW 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💪🏾🙏🏾👍🏾Thank yall
Ladies this is a great interview can you PLEASE put in the description when was this interview? How long before her passing 🙏🏽😢 thank you 🙏🏽
2022
great interview!
Thanks for the video, I just wish the ladies let Ms. Giovanni to do more speaking. Kind of defeats the purpose 😅
agreed. the host also didn't let the other guest finish her sentences, her thoughts?.
❤❤❤
To listen to the beautiful sister in the blue say she don't want to get married was tough to hear.
I love this video. However the closed captions are extremely off.
💜💥
❤
That's why I love Nollywood films the majority of its subject deals with marriage between young people
What a great way to communicate honesty and empathy and education. 💯💯🫶🏽
Steps Left In Snow
For Yolande Cornelia "Nikki" Giovanni,
June 7, 1943 - December 9, 2024
I should say goodbye,
after all that she has been -
after all that she has meant,
fellow-Fiskite, fellow-poet -
big sister of mine…
determined to return to university
to complete my unfinished degree -
not wanting to go back to MSU
that I had abandoned 7 years before
praying, pondering, wondering,
where will I go, and it was her voice -
her poetry that made up my mind for me -
a poem on her LP of poems I owned
about dropping out of Fisk
and being urged by a parent
to return to complete her degree,
reminding her that her grandfather
had graduated from Fisk in 1905…
just then, it hit me, right then I knew,
“That’s it!” I said aloud to myself,
“I’ll go to Fisk!” and that is what I did
attaining a study leave from teaching,
I attended Fisk for one year, 1985,
and what a time it was -
what a tradition I became a part of
it was "Nikki" Giovanni who inspired me,
through poetry - with a poem
to become a part of the Fisk family…
well, I heard day-before-yesterday
from a friend who dropped by,
and again, last night, on MSNBC,
that "Nikki" Giovanni, at 81,
has passed away
after a battle with cancer…
ah, the music of her voice -
of her poetry, I will remember always
the brightness of her verse -
her fighting spirit
what an inspiration she was -
is and always will be
RIP, sister, fellow-Fiskite,
gone on to join the angels
in heaver in song
