What if the Super Mario Bros Super Show was a Fully Animated Game?

Super Mario Maker 1 and 2 brought the worlds of the old classics into the hands of the younger generation. In some ways it preserves these games by reintroducing their concepts. But what about things that haven't been as well preserved or re-celebrated? The Super Mario Bros Super Show was huge for a lot of us as kids, but these worlds haven't really been revisited since. Sure there's some amazing mods out there for existing Mario games like Super Mario 64 - but there's something about the fluidity and cartoony nature of the original show that is lost that way. So, what if the Super Mario Bros Super Show was a fully animated game? What if those worlds had a second chance to shine? Well, one family might have a neat solution to that!

Believe it or not, I used to watch this show BEFORE I played the games. My family never got an NES until I was around 6 years old or so, which meant I used to watch the Super Mario Brothers Super Show regularly on TV as a small child, whilst being completely oblivious that it was even based off a video game. I used to stand in front of the TV and do the Mario dance from end credits sequence when I was like 5!

It's good to see that the prevailing internet opinion of "buh buh the Super Show and LOZ cartoons sucked" doesn't apply here. I'm worried that Nintendo will DMCA the game though.
I mean... They did kinda suck.
It's just not relevant. Obviously a lot of people are very nostalgic for the show, including myself. Trying to cut down the show for no reason when the creator of this project has such fond memories of it would be pretty rude.
If you ask me though, the quality of work on this project is much higher than anything on the show.
Also, if this gets DMCA'd, it'll probably be because of this video drawing attention to it.
You can find a show corny and cheesy and still love it. My personal favorite of the cartoons is the SMB3 one, as it was the most accurate to the game
if it gets dmca'd its because Nintendo is a petty jealous child that doesn't want them to have attention. they, like any corporate greed bound place, wants all the attention. but it shouldn't be sued because this is a fanfare game, not out for profit and something just put out there as a fan art fangame. It shouldn't be sued because there's no money profit in it. This is also what happens when Nintendo doesn't release something that fans want so fans take it in their own hands and does it.

God, the nostalgia. I used to watch this show when I was quite young, and enjoyed it a lot. It had so much wacky animation and the colors and show were an amazing turning point. Turning it intok a game is even better, as many people can play it and feel the nostalgic feeling of this show when they used to watch it.

I just hope they don't get shutdown by Nintendo 😭
seeing the recent hype with the opening theme being used in the movie's trailer hopefully it would also raise awareness of this project and lead to it getting more support and appreciation
I think I first encountered this show with my father at a rental store called Hollywood Video. I remember the Robo Koopa episode vaguely traumatizing me for a somewhat silly thing, Mario and Luigi got this mech suit in the episode and Luigi controlled the lower half, an animation error led to Luigi's face still being inside the mech suit despite Luigi being visibly outside of the suit in the same scene. It bothered me since my kid brain couldn't rationalize why there where two Luigis, one of which was creepily still and had lifeless eyes.
I watched some of the episodes of the show while growing up, and I just loved the depth they gave to the Mario universe rhat the games seldom did.

Well, the cartoon based on SMB3 did..
I love Charles Martinet, but Captain Lou Albano and Danny Wells will always be the voice of Mario and Luigi to me lol
Did you know Luigi got his shy and timid demeanor from this show? I mean, they didn't have personalities prior to the cartoon... And ever since up to today, they still behave the same even in the games lol I always admired that.
Don’t forget that toad’s current voice is more similar to the voice in the super show while in 64 it... wasn’t
Luigi's shy and timid demeanor it's something that has been around since the Atari commercials for Mario Bros. It didn't originate from this.
When i first saw mario and luigi's designs i liked them enough but was deterred from the franchise because i thought they'd have high pitched, pussy, typical italian voices and i did not want to here even a millisecond of that bullshit.
So i avoided the franchise my whole life.
I believe i was in high school when i saw nostalgia critic's review of the super mario brothers super show and i was blown away.
I only watched it on a whim because i do find the character designs appealing in the same way i find the sonic character designs appealing.
Mario and luigi actually sounded cool. No high pitched, pussy typical italian voices but low, kinda raspy typical italian voices.
I thought these were the voices of the characters that followed through into other mario media but when i decided to listen to how they sounded in other media i was GRAVELY disappointed.
So now if i ever give mario the light of day i only think of the super show incarnation of the characters.
If you still don't understand my hatred for the official mario voice, despite me earlier saying i also found his super show voice typical, then what i mean is in that show he and luigi sound less fake.
Im 14 and I watched this show when I was a lot younger and I really enjoyed it, I only recently found out it ran from 1989 to 1991 with 52 episodes, this is so much nostalgia for me
I remember watching this as a kid, it was amazing. It was where I started getting into Mario which has brought me to now. And I still love Mario, and I don’t think I’ll stop. Also I’m so glad they brought the NES and SNES games on the switch, it is so great! Also keep making great videos, bye-bye!

I used to love watching the DiC Mario cartoons back then. Seeing someone actually making a fangame based off of the cartoons makes me excited to see it finished.
I love every single thing about this. Mario's blank canvas personality allows him to be extremely adaptable to any form of game and for a cartoon that was obviously so heavily drawn from in later inspiration for certain characters and personalities (like Luigi) it would make a wonderful homage to one of the leading events that helped kick all that off.
The super show had such an abstract, wacky, and unique look to it, that I think it makes this project REALLY stand out on its own and looks wonderful for it. I really wish Nintendo was more open-minded about stuff like this because had it been a property I personally owned, I would be getting this fellow on the phone right now to work on this project officially with an actual staff and budget.
Simply astounding and beautiful work, Mr.Lopez.

Oh this would be such a dream come true if this game for my childhood show ever got fully finished!
I was born in 2007, but my dad worked at a thrift store, so I had a box set of Super Mario Bros. super show growing up, and loved it.
Thank you for introducing me to this. I found some stuff and watched it and it's great!
The super mario super show was the first thing I watched as a kid (early elementary age) on youtube (not counting when family would watch something with me in the room) which led me to watching the other mario shows. Whenever I used to watch this, I would see sunshine videos by chuggaaconroy, but I didn't watch them for a while due to fear of getting in trouble. Eventually I did watch them because of the fact my mom used to play the game and it stopped working the day I was gonna get to play it for the first time. From there I slowly watch a larger variety of youtubers, got more of an interest for all games, and even made a friend who watched chugga, so this show has a special place in my heart. If it wasn't for this show, I might have never started to watch youtube as much, never had made that friend, or never had gotten as much of an interest for games. So to summarize: I gotta give a nice thank you to this show for what it may or may not have cause... Thank you super mario super show.

Considering what kinds of weapons ACTUAL ninjas used back then and Nintendo's hatred of fans and Susan Wojcicki-level greediness and wickedness, I'd say "Poisoned Arrows" instead of "Sacred Ointment" since the latter sounds too pleasant when we're basically talking about the possibility of Nintendo false-flagging this along with many other games.

Well good job buddy, now that you've told the world about this project, Nintendo's going to find and Cease and Desist it sooner.
In the 40th episode of the Super Show, "Plummers Academy," during the live-action segment "Glasnuts," Mario and Luigi were literally met in their house by Mikhail Gorbachev himself. Now, this carries a lot more significance than it may seem at first glance. See, the Super Show was actually the first time Mario and Luigi were given actual personalities: Mario, the strong-willed leader, and Luigi, the easy-to-scare understudy. But their personalities weren't limited to the Super Show; to this day, both Mario and Luigi have still retained these personalities in almost every official Nintendo game they've appeared in. This is huge, as it means the Super Mario Bros. Super Show is canon to the Mario universe. What this also implies is that, seeing as the live-action segments are explained to be a prequel to the cartoon segments in the opening transition between live-action and cartoon in every episode, all of the live-action segments are _also_ canon to the Mario universe. Thus, in conclusion, Mikhail Gorbachev canonically exists in the Mario universe; and not only does Mikhail Gorbachev exist in the Mario universe, but Mario and Luigi have canonically met and interacted with Mikhail Gorbachev. Thank you for reading my thesis.
I remember watching this show on Netflix, years ago. I really liked it, so hearing about a SMBSS game is amazing!
