A very charming and informative video. I'm English, married to a Kiwi for 40 years, I love my rural lifestyle, and I love NZ so much. Even though NZ is expensive, look at the benefits expensive offers, lovely people , a gorgeous country, and real freedom. xxxxxx
As a kiwi I love watching both you and Billy express your feelings. Your wildly enthusiastic nature makes it a pleasure to watch you enthusiastically express yourself. I think new zeanders will fall inlove with you both. My wife and I pray that you guys will end up here permanently and are able to get into a home soon. If possible can you get Bily to play his favourite piece on the french horn.
It's funny because I don't think of myself as enthusiastic. I'm very mellow. I'm trying to convince him to do a video on here about his job and performing.
I love your view on religion and disenchantment thereof. Thank you for your honesty and we welcome your family to our shores when they are able to. Love your content and honesty...yay you!
Great to see you are enjoying our country. And also interesting to hear a little about your experience leaving the church. It is not an easy decision but there are plenty of members who have made a similar courageous decision down here as well.
My partner and I didn't like the traditional northern hemisphere Christmas, stuck inside with Coronation Street on the TV, shit weather outside and too much food and drink consumed. We now spend a quiet day doing what we want, whether that be the beach or the mountains, cook something non-traditional, and chill out. Also because we don't have family in NZ we don't buy presents (or expect them), and only send a few cards, and the build up is a lot less stressful as we don't have to spend ages going shopping.
My wife and I are trying to get to New Zealand as soon as we can. We're working on a student visa to get my Master's degree (I'm a music teacher!). We absolutely love your content and it's so fun seeing Billy enjoying his time with the APO. I know the APO does things with area schools and I'd love to hear more about the state of music education in New Zealand at some point. I also got into rugby after doing my New Zealand research and watching the all blacks when I wake up before Sunday football starts here in the states has been my new routine. Going to see the boys when they play the Eagles in DC next month!
Were embarrassed we haven't been to a rugby game yet! There is a Ministry of Education (govt) funded Music outside the classroom programme. It provides heavily subsidised group music classes for ages 5-13 ($100 per year). It is not as well known as it should be. Individual and small group Music lessons are also available at school for high school students 13-18 - students taking music as subject sometimes get preference though. Playing Classical music is actually quite popular here - there are amateur or community orchestras in almost every large town.

Another lovely video, wonderfully frank and engaging. Some tough/sensitive questions there. Your Prime Minister is also an ex-Mormon, and for much the same reasons as yours. Both Australia and NZ give new migrants sticker-shock when they arrive, quite apart from the stratospheric cost of housing, but then they realise that medical care is not an 'extra', that school is either free or affordable, and that people don't have to work two jobs just to get by. You will find the NZ education system is all about educating 'the whole person', from 3-y-o kinder up to middle high school, the system wants to create 'confident learners', who have experienced success and failure and have not been frightened by either. As you see, by the very nature of the people you're now living amongst, it's remarkably successful.
All perfectly said! I couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s expensive, but what you’re getting is great quality and totally unlike what you’d find anywhere else :) And we found out Jacinda was ex-Mormon before we moved here and took it as a great sign :)

Thank you for your very sweet message! I definitely feel like I’ve learned and grown a lot this year! One of the ways I’ve done that is being more comfortable in front of the camera. Going back and watching my very first video is so terrible 😂 We’ve loved our year here and are looking forward to another one!
Thanks for your great videos, and for opening up about your faith! I’m a kiwi and was raised LDS also, but left the church at the age of 13 while coming to terms with being gay. It was encouraging to hear your reasons for questioning your faith, and I commend you for seeing the underlying inequalities within its teachings and core principles which are detrimental to LGBTI/queer people and women. We are who we are, we do not choose to be who we are-only to live authentic and happy lives!
There are many problems with the church, but this is definitely one of the biggest of our generation. It's causing people to leave in droves because what they're being told is contrary to what they know is right and good. It's disgusting that they're still today giving talks trying to say that being gay is a choice, meanwhile LGBTQ+ teen suicide rates in Utah are skyrocketing.
i love your videos, thank you Becca and family! If you wish to spend Christmas in the SI and near a beach, I suggest Nelson and Abel Tasman National Park - it's typically sunny and has great beaches. Marahau is at the edge of the national park with water taxis that take you into the park. Marahau is small but has some great self catering options. We've found it great for family vacations!
That sounds wonderful! We’re still very up in the air about our Christmas plans so we’ll see what happens, but I want to go here regardless of the time of year!
Property ladder tip .. buy a small unit and grow from there.. or move to southisland and buy unit there. I homeschool here in new Zealand if you want more information on what its like to homeschool here as very different to usa. Thank you for opening up awesome getting to know you.
Thanks for the tips! And I'm intrigued by the idea of homeschooling, but I'll probably do public school if we're still in NZ at the time. What made you choose homeschooling over public?
@@Becca.Loveless we moved back to our home city and alot of kids in the schools here have ptsd a study was done on this by Canterbury university and its very evident in the children in the schools due to earthquakes.i also was studying in the education sector and saw the pressure of moe and how it took away from the children, also a theorist that nz lean on for ece his earlier theories just spoke to my mum heart. I love it and never thought i would its nice knowing exactly who my kids are and being the one watching them progress. Its not for everyone but giving school a try first is a good idea because it may fit. In new Zealand you also get provided an allowance for supplies (its not much ) but it helps.
I ❤️❤️❤️ your videos and can’t help but smile when watching. I hope you can make it down to the South Island for Christmas. You will love it! Welcome to NZ 😀
I think you have to offset the cost of living in NZ with the benefits. Health and education is not paid from your after tax income. As you noted agriculture is not as industrial, free range eggs and hormone free milk. In season high quality produce is cheap and plentiful. New Zealand's work life balance is more family orientated than what you would get in the USA. Kiwi tip. The best time to holiday in NZ is February March April, May. You mostly get wonderful settled fine weather and there are less crowds.
Health I can see because your life/death and eventual elective care will be covered but education? School donations are 'optional' + uni fees are from after tax income. I'd actually like if we expanded these so they were entirely encompassing but at present they're not entirely :(
That’s very true. I’ve said it in many other videos, that the quality is so much better here so I totally think it’s worth paying more money for the food. And same goes for quality of life. And thanks for the tip! That’s really helpful to know :)
Hey guys... Great Q & A... I grew up in Auckland but my favourite city is Wellington. They have an orchestra down there as well with a booming arts scene... Good luck on all your endeavours.
Billy auditioned with that orchestra several years ago, obviously didn't get it, but it was also a recorded audition. A little trickier with those. Thanks for watching!
You both are so brave to question your religion, something you have depended on since birth. Not many people are capable of taking a fresh look at something like that. It is more comfortable for people to go with what they know and avoid conflict. Congrats on trusting in yourselves to make that journey.
The internet is making it easier to learn the truth, and once we learned it there really wasn’t much choice. It was difficult at the time but so worth it!
Welcome to our Paradise. Enjoy everything we have to offer(other than the lockdowns). You've been blessed with a very smiley child. Love your unique candor.
Really enjoyed this video and your views on life in NZ and the U.S. I'm sure you will love the South Island when you visit. I live outside Christchurch and we do have pretty good weather down here too 😄 even though North Islanders seems to think it's cold.
I love your vids.. What i love even more is how you pronounce Māori words.. like Kia Ora and Mōrena😊 really enjoy watching your videos thank you for sharing😁
Big lol! Yeah I remember watching that as a Mormon and was so brainwashed I brushed it all off as "anti-mormon propaganda lies." Now I know that it was all based on truth 😂
Well if you think New Zealand is beautiful with the little bit you've seen, wait till you get down to the South Island, man thats the best bit. It will blow your mind. Have a great time when you get there. Might see you on the ferry as i'm off down there for Christmas too. Hopefully you'll be out of lockdown by then
Dont know if its much of a secret, but you should definitely put The Abel Tasman National Park at the top of the south island on your list of things to do this summer. There's day walks or you could do the full 4-5 day walk from one end to the other. I think you would love it! Holiday spots in the summer book out fast, most 6-8 months in advance! Also look at Top Ten Holiday Parks when you're looking for places to stay, they're big part of the kiwi summer Christmas camping experience. Not quite what they used to be but there's some great ones. What childhood are made of 😂
I don't know if you've ever heard Kiwis' refer to them before, but here in NZ we have the "Red Band" gumboots for slogging through muck . .lol ;-) . .not so much in Auckland though :-))
@@Becca.Loveless I was blown away by the sheer size of it. I went to observe a football training as I played American football here. Just mind blowing.... and the melon split afterwards wasn't bad either🤣
Just to add... you said you love produce.... our Spring and Summer are when our produce comes to the fore ..... strawberries are starting and soon it will be asparagus and blueberries. From the south island, try the Oamaru new potatoes, and from Christmas time, Central Otago cherries and stonefruit (peaches, apricots, plums, nectarines). Kiwis bottle /preserve stonefruit for autumn / winter.
Love the story about how you got together. Really enjoying your videos. Yeeessss, come to the South Island!! If you like the north, you’re going to LOVE the south x
I clean forgot about the Q&A, but this pretty much covered everything anyway. I'm sure you'll get through that years trial no problem, and also hope you both get your own place one day. It's always tough at first, but eventually life gets easier, not that that's much comfort at the moment. But property is more affordable in certain areas of the country, just not Auckland, it's just the commuting that could be a hassle if you have to work in Auckland. Hope William does take up an instrument one day, not as a job, but just purely as an interest or hobby, the time to get them interested is when they are young, get him a ukulele, but not a drum set lol!
Hey guys I grew up in NZ but I've been living and working in the UK and Australia so, I know the felling of missing family. But, now I have my own family, my family is now my immediate family not the family when I first left NZ so it has alled change.
Very informative and good on you for sharing more of yourselves with us. I didn't realise you were lds but your answer was interesting as to why you left. Yes, the Auckland housing market and traffic is the worst (I live in Auckland and catch the bus to work)
I left the Mormon church too for many of the same reasons. It is both good and hard. Still have not told the family. If you guys are ever passing Hamilton, come for a visit :) it's always good to make new connections!

Also stopped being LDS after being raised in the church. Totally agree with your explanation. Could not reconcile church teachings with gay family members who are amazing people. Now completely non religious and far happier for it. Good luck to you both.
And there are so many other things that I can't accept - like the inequality between men and women, racism in the church, etc. The list could go on for quite a while..

That was lovely! 👏👏 So you want to do a summer "tiki tour" 🤩🥳 Perfect timing, do as much as you can before the borders open back up. As my user name suggests I've traveled a lot and what I've found is that it's the people that are the most interesting when you travel. The very best way to experience how people live in a country is to stay in their homes. If you want to take a bit of a risk, really I don't think it's a risk at all, tell people on UA-cam and Instagram that you hoping to be in a certain area around a approximate time and I'm sure you will not need to pay for accommodation and probably meals for the whole trip. I'm serious! A day or two here a day there, I guarantee you people will invite you with open arms. I'll get the ball rolling, Becca and Billy there's always a bed in Waikanae Beach, your welcome anytime. 😀👍
🥰🥰 This would be incredible, sometimes we feel pretty overwhelmed by all the places to go and all the travel arrangements we have to make. I will definitely take you up on the offer, whenever (if lockdown ends) we head farther south we will stop by😊
It was really strange how many Mormons we've run into in our short amount of time here in Auckland! We haven't been to Hamilton yet, but I know the Mormon temple is there.

I'd be quite shocked if Billy didn't get offered a permanent contract; his arrival hasn't exactly gone unnoticed, it would seem. Back when you started, I was telling a friend of mine about your videos (she's a music student at uni here in Wellington), and how you'd come over because your husband was playing in the APO, and she was like "Oh, is that the French horn guy?". I said, "Yeah! Wow, how did you know?!", and she was like, "Well I'm a music student, duh." Then I said, "Well yeah, but that doesn't mean you'd know about some random French horn player in Auckland", and she was like, "Well, I mean, it kinda does. There's not exactly a lot of orchestras in New Zealand. Plus, French horn is hard and he's really good, so it's pretty big news in the music world. Geez, Michael, where's your culture?" So basically I'm uncultured swine now cos apparently your husband is music-famous and I didn't even know about it! 😂😂😂

i love your videos, thank you Becca and family!
Your wedding dress was stunning! Wishing you all the best ! X
Thanks! I loved my wedding dress😊
🤍🤍 You're so sweet! Thank you so much for watching!
You have to visit great barrier island. It's like New Zealand but better.
( It's just off Auckland)
Oooo Ill put that on my list. We also want to go to Tiritiri Matangi
@@Becca.Loveless wow... They missed out. As I said, love your content... Keep up the great work. Give your bubba a big hug. 🙂
Thanks! We love it here. Cant wait to get out of Auckland!
this has answered all my questions and made me even more invested in your channel
Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed this video and your views on life in NZ and the U.S.
I'm sure you will love the South Island when you visit.
I live outside Christchurch and we do have pretty good
weather down here too 😄 even though North Islanders seems to think it's cold.
We're really used to cold weather, so I think we'd love it down there! Winter or summer ☺️ Can't wait to get down there!
It was bloody chilly in ChCh last night! Bah humbug, it's time for spring to arrive properly.

I love your vids..
What i love even more is how you pronounce Māori words.. like Kia Ora and Mōrena😊 really enjoy watching your videos thank you for sharing😁
I love learning new phrases and words! I wish I had the time to dedicate to learning more, but for now a little at a time is the way for me :)

Kia ora whanau. My thanks to you & all those living in Auckland for doing the hard yards for everyone all in Aotearoa. Keep safe, take care.
Thanks for saying! Kia ora and kia kaha!
Mate of mine married a Samoan mormon, sent him a link to South Parks episode on Joseph Smith. He's not allowed to talk to me anymore :)
Big lol! Yeah I remember watching that as a Mormon and was so brainwashed I brushed it all off as "anti-mormon propaganda lies." Now I know that it was all based on truth 😂
Alot of members have watched it it's South park no biggie and they wouldn't stop talking to you for that reason, come on!
Im a Kiwi. Love you excitement and energy. Stoked you are enjoying our way of life.
It’s so wonderful here I can’t help but love it! We’re excited to do more traveling when things open up again :)
Well if you think New Zealand is beautiful with the little bit you've seen, wait till you get down to the South Island, man thats the best bit. It will blow your mind. Have a great time when you get there. Might see you on the ferry as i'm off down there for Christmas too. Hopefully you'll be out of lockdown by then
Cannot wait! We better not be in lockdown at that time!
What childhood are made of 😂
Hopefully we aren't too late on booking things! Need to get some camping supplies!
Loved getting to know you guys more. Thanks heaps for sharing your lives & love story with us 😉. The photos of you guys added so much too.
We had a really fun time with this one! I love the videos where it feels like I’m making more of a connection with everyone 🤍
Love your content🤗Miss NZ. New subscriber here. Many Blessings to your family🙏
Thanks so much! We love it here and feel so lucky.
Yay, East of Eden is one of my all time favourite books as well. But Pride and Prejudice is def my favourite.
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorites as well, but I’ve always liked Wuthering Heights more. I might be the only one that feels this way 😂
Thanks for sharing, you guys are a lovely addition to NZ :)
Thanks for watching! And thanks ☺️
It's also worth saying that Auckland has by far the most expensive real estate. Most other parts of NZ are significantly more affordable.
That’s a comforting thought. We’ll see where we are five years from now :)
I don't know if you've ever heard Kiwis' refer to them before, but here in NZ we have the "Red Band" gumboots for slogging through muck . .lol ;-)
. .not so much in Auckland though :-))
Yes I've heard of them, I'll have to keep my eyes out for them, and get a pair for our son.☺️
@@Becca.Loveless they come in all size/age groups :-)

I’m glad we’re here!!
Nice. I visited BYU back in '96.
It’s a beautiful campus! We had a fun time as students there.

@@Becca.Loveless Ugh, I know. Sending best wishes 💕
For what he plays with and how loud he is, it seems like drums would be his first choice!😂
Hey guys I grew up in NZ but I've been living and working in the UK and Australia so, I know the felling of missing family. But, now I have my own family, my family is now my immediate family not the family when I first left NZ so it has alled change.
It can be rough, especially with borders closed.
Very informative and good on you for sharing more of yourselves with us. I didn't realise you were lds but your answer was interesting as to why you left. Yes, the Auckland housing market and traffic is the worst (I live in Auckland and catch the bus to work)
Thanks! My husband rides the bus in to work as well (when there is work 😩)
You guys are such a cute couple/ family. Love your videos and your positive energy.

We love it here, and the fact that it is smaller scale and quieter makes it so much nicer.
@@Becca.Loveless Looking at the Church now you realise just how man made it is. It really is a product of the 19th Century.
Thanks for the upload and history on you and billy, such a great couple btw, good to see the little one pop up at the end 😂. Seeing y’all are peanut butter fans I thought of a old peanut butter add that they used to play a lot on tv #utterpeanutbutternutter

We're doing pretty well, all things considered.
McKinley's shoe company- probably close to the last shoe company in NZ- dunno, but they made high quality shoes and boots. -Kiwi brand and made- check 'em out? Made in Dunedin.
(Their bread and butter are school shoes.)
Just checked them out, they look real nice.
@@Becca.Loveless You won't find high fashion- I think, but stylish. They do not fall apart like the terrible glued shoe or rot, where the sole- if moulded, crumbs to bits, like I had work boots do this- Especially when they were stored for a while between uses. So you want to do a summer "tiki tour" 🤩🥳
Perfect timing, do as much as you can before the borders open back up.

There is a big Mormon prescience here in NZ. Especially Hamilton.
But I suppose you know that

Interesting to hear that the people in the deep south of the USA are really friendly. Makes me want to visit. Would they relate to us easily or find us kinda weird?
I had such a good time, I stayed with a family in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They were so amazing and everyone I met in that 3 months was so nice.
They are really great people, sometimes misguided. I think they would have a hard time understanding the accent, but probably vice versa.

@@Becca.Loveless One hint as William is pre-school, always try to travel when school is back. Prices are high during school holidays. The weather is always best from February anyway!
🤣😂🤣 That's hilarious! We are planning on him getting the job! Its odd to me that people would know that as well 😂
