      The live version from the “how the west was won” live album, recorded in L.A. in 1972 is absolutely incredible… after 1972 Plant could no longer hit the original high octave in the chorus, from 73 on he had to sing it down one step. I will find the link…

      The studio version is better. Actually, most studio versions when it comes to Led Zeppelin are better, with the exception of Stairway To Heaven live at Madison Square Garden, and maybe a few others.

    Of the MANY great parts of what made/makes Zeppelin soooooooo great, one such way is how they loved their extended jams. This song, Immigrant Song live in California, and a slew of other Zep classics are proof of that.

    Robert Plant, has mentioned on more than one occasion that writing lyrics for their songs was difficult, due to the great musicianship of the band members. There was a lot of improvising during the live shows
    I personally believe that this gave Zeppelin the upper hand IMO. You would enjoy the studio version much more. 😀

    I have noticed no one ever does any reaction to Robert plant and Jenny Paige in the '90s they got back together in 1993 and did a new album called No quarter and started touring in 1995. There's a lot of videos out there of there songs of that album I saw them in 1995 live during their tour of no quarter album. It was amazing.

    Thanks Rebeka, I'm a huge Zeppelin fan, so I loved this. BUT, I have to say, for live Zeppelin performances, this was a little flat. Plant sounded like he had a sore throat...he was singing it an octave lower than the studio version and sounded like he had trouble getting up high. Jimmy Page was, as always, excellent, but Led Zep is capable of so much more. Love your reactions, thank you!

    This kind of spontaneous and improvisational playing is how Led Zeppelin became the legendary live entity that we know and still love even today. If they would have just gone out on stage and played their songs the way they sounded on the albums night after night that would have became a bit monotonous and boring.Thank You for another great and honest reaction Rebeka.

    They were into live improvisation at this time. I like improvisation, but I know it’s not to everyone’s taste. I think Robert struggled to translate this song live, at least in this performance. The studio version is a masterpiece, as many others has said here.

    @DanteDiCarloMusic 10 місяців тому

    The thing is by this point Plant's voice had lost its range so he sings a completely different melody when it gets to the part where the whole band kicks in and it's nowhere near as good as the melody on the record, the record is also much shorter with less soloing

    this version isnt one I will return to unless to see someone react to it. The studio version is such a beautiful track. I thought as Led Zepplin goes, it was a poor performance. Jimmy seemed to have issues at times, Robert's voice even had patches where it broke up, the audio production seemed poor, even for a concert in 1975, the drums never made their imprint and so the bass guitar seemed to stay in the background too. All in all, it just seemed to be about Jimmy's solo...even here it seemed forced, and even forced into the other parts of the song, instead of a clear demarcation of what is the song and what is the solo, and as such seemed to muddy the song quite a bit. This is just my opinion, and I am no expert but this is how it sounded to me. I love this song on the album though, so I will retain hope that there is better live versions out there for me to find.
