These type of guys are priceless. No amount of money could beat the quality of building it yourself. Well done. Great build. Trailer will outlive the truck most likely lol
There are very few people that would take the time to put out a video that shows so much detail. Thank you. You said it wasn't Hollywood quality. Well, it didn't have to be. You did any awesome job. Aces!
Yes I agree best video on you tube . Explained in simple terms. Found a 3500 lb axle on Craigslist with leaf springs and going to build a 6x8 trailer. And all I needed was this video! Thanks so much for helping so many people.
Great job. I built a 5x8 using 2x3 tube 40 years ago. After a few years I cut the front off and added 2’. Still using it today and do not want to sell it. Build something good and it lasts for years. Heck I am 75 years old now and I built it 50 years ago not 40.
Seriously? Who would thumbs down this video? Two thumbs up man! You're awesome. Thank you so much. I need a firewood hauler and don't have money to spend on an expensive trailer. I now have a nice project very soon.
Hell of a tutorial my friend! Thank you for taking the time to show every step! Looks great! I am going to try and tackle my first trailer build and also my first welding challenge! I really appreciate your teaching
I've fixed dozens of trailers that were bought from HOME DEPOT or LOWE'S. They're mass produced. I've been welding and fabricating for over 37 years and I'll have to say you broke everything down and explained it in lamens terms that anymore will understand. Great job on the build. Great video 👍👍. Anyone who wants to know why welders charge so much to build something or repair something, now know why the price might be higher than YOU thought, I'd refer them to this video.
The way I pack bearings without making a mess is I put them in a zip lock baggie with a big blob of axle grease. Seal it up and you can work the grease into the bearings without getting it everywhere.
Never mind Hollywood you still deserve an Oscar. One point about bearing seals. If you are not using a press to install seals smear grease inside where the garter spring is located, using a hammer can often jolt the spring off the seal and you may not be aware that it happened. Excellent and professionally explained.
great job you made it so easy that people who have never built something like this feel they can do it and the best part you dont have that tv show tude just a real down to earth guy thanks from wayne and nadine at the rat cave in jack fla.
Just a suggestion- I use conduit for all my wiring and line clamps. You this will all but eliminate shorts in the lights, And should you get one, it's easier to rewire.
Ive worked in Collision Shops all my life as Bodyman / Painter. Rust is my enemy. I noticed you have a lot of bare metal under pieces you can’t treat. I think I may use an Etch Primer or Direct To Metal Sealer on all my pieces then grind were I need to weld. Its a paint to have to stop and grind each weld area, but I think it will be worth the effort. I did something like this a while back and after i treated the metal I only used a cheap grinding wheel on my drill to clean the metal enough to weld. Prior to paint I also seal joints and all welded areas rot prevent water from resting in those areas. I know its overkill, but as the say9ing goes-……..f its worth doing, its worth doing right.
thinking about building a trailer ,decided to look for a trailer Video ,and glad I did ,love the way you explain thing's ,and make it look so easy ,great Job thanks
Very nice! I've been wanting to build a trailer, and now I know basically what's involved. When I get ready to start building, I'll probably need to come back a couple of times to get more details. Your trailer is every bit as good as one of those Lowe's trailers, and THEN some. In fact, your trailer is worth much more than a comparable "Corner Store" trailer. Thanks for the video.
Thank you. So very much for your informative video a person like you makes it very possible for people like us to do things we wouldn't normally do. Without this kind of information. Great Work
Thanks for taking the time to put out such a fantastic video. Very well filmed and explained. Also, thanks for the free plans. What a generous way of paying it forward!
At some point in time hopefully, I will be able to start buildin one of these myself, but have to contend with space constraints( translated means I don't have a garage or workshop), but at the same time, will have an abundant amount of ventilation(fresh air)
Front amber marker lights will tend to keep you safe. I like using them on trailers. I also use four of the highly reflective red & white rectangular stickers - two per side. One each on the front and rear. Makes the trailer really “Pop” when the headlights hit it at night. Nice build!
Good job on build. I was going to build a trailer for myself but after pricing all the parts needed and price for supplies like welding wire & welding gas and maybe a few claps, I found it’s a lot cheaper to buy a new trailer that’s all ready built. But you can save even more money by buying a good used one. Or getting a trailer that may need a little tlc.
Great job my friend. This is what I do for a living. And the one thing I would consider doing if using gussets on your trailer tongue to the frame this will really add a lot of strength. But overall you killed it man good job
By gussets, do you mean angle iron running perpendicular to the A-frame tongue? Or do you mean run some solid flat iron to fill in the angled corners where the tongue meets the trailer frame?
I've watched your video before and I'm wanting to build a car trailer but I need a small utility trailer and yours is the size I want it's a great help.
I mount the fenders about an inch back from centre - because as the springs flatten with load the axle moves to the rear - just looks better and eliminates the possibility of the tyre rubbing on a tight fitting fender
really enjoyed your in depth video, you explained it in simple enough terms for anyone to understand. I used to build trailers, I was the dove man, really enjoyed it. considering building a small trailer, and this one would be ideal for my needs. oh, you could have solved your fender issue by just cutting a notch in the inner fender wall and lifting the fender up how ever far you needed... just an idea. thanks again....
I'm gon na be building a trailer exactly like this, I want to let you know, I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. precise clear detailed instructions, a ten out of ten in my book.
Good video! Using plastic exam gloves is a good way to avoid getting grease all over while packing bearings. Then, when it’s packed, pull one off, hold the hub with the clean hand, and set it on the race and then pull the other off. Two gloves per bearing is a small price to pay
Thanks alot for your video , I was able to build this in 2 days , just waiting to get it vin inspected ! I have a Lincoln 180 MiG, I had to rotate the trailer to flat position welding multiple times but other then welding in flat position it was smooth , I did have to preheat the 3" channel with a blowtorch to get it melt effectively !
Thank you for the GREAT instructional video ! When I make mine, I am going to paint it a bright yellow and call it the banana in honor to your video !!
I got a quote today for the steel. $281.00 but i forgot to put the metal grating on my quote, but since it's flat and not expanded grate, i'm sure it will be $50.00 or less, so add that on about... $330.00 for the steel. $200.00 for the wood deck if you use pressure treated lumber, and you can get an trailer build kit with the axles and everything for about $600.00. you can build this trailer for around $1,100.00
Awesome trailer. Much better than anything you can buy in any of the big box stores and probably for about the same cost or even less. Thanks for the free plans too! I'm gonna build your 6x10 trailer. I have a beat up 4x8 that I bought at Harbor Freight that I have to remove the stake sides on it to get a full sheet of drywall or plywood on it and the load limit on it is pretty low too. This trailer will fit my needs perfectly. Probably build 2 of them to fit different functions. Also gonna see how I can make one into an end dump.
Trailer looks nice, I have a tip I use when I wire a trailer. I always use stainless steel bolts to connect the ground wire, up front and at each light. I mig weld the bolt head to the trailer that way you will never loose a ground connection, which from what I have experienced is the main cause for trailer lights wiring problems.
imystery man the other lighting problem with trailers is when the cable at the front gets damaged from being out in the weather for a few years. Last time I rewired my little trailer, I put a socket on the inside of the draw bar the same as the one on the back of the car, and put a plug on each end of a piece of cable so I have a removable cable connecting trailer to car. Works a treat!
Very descriptive video and I appreciate the effort. One thing I'd change is run the hitch bars back to the axle. Depending on weight, you've only got 16" of solid rigidity. The rest of the strength depends on the siderails. It changes center of mass and could fold where the rails stop.
On a flat bed you would be correct, but with a upper rail providing the extra strength/rigidity it is not an issue. I would guess that is why he took the time to explain and show how the upper rail strengthens the trailer as a whole.
Thanks. i watched all the process. but on your next trailer have the C- channel run till the back of the trailer to form the chasis to add more strength. Then build on top of the chasis. also improve on the tail gate hinges type. but i guess you wanted to cut off some excess weight on the body. but im happy with the project.
thank you so very much for this video Matt. i am having a trailer built. and with your video i will be able to have an intelligent conversation with my builder. using all the correct names of parts. and construction.
Nice build, nice vidio, but I think you will eventually drop the axel underneath the springs for more ground clearance and more spring clearance. But is nice trailer, Thanks M L Rogers Pasadena, TX
Very detailed video buddy!! Sorry about the first comment I made earlier but it definitely made me made when I couldn’t hear the details on some important things i was needing to no!! Anyways the video was a very detailed and very informative to everyone!! If someone couldn’t figure out how to build there trailer after watching your video they definitely should not be even trying to build one anyways!!! Awesome
great job... I'm building one for the same thing... the threaded rod for the hinge is actually better for some light duty applications... it allows lube to stay longer because of the ridges rather than a smooth surface that will allow it to just run off.... thanks for the video!!!
Awesome. I have to substitute a 2x4x5.5lb channel iron for the 3x3x3.5lb channel iron. Locally only 2x2x3.5lb and 2x4x5.5lb is available. We will use 7018 welding rods
The A frame should always go from the very front of your spring hanger + I always mark the center of the trailer and put a straight edge on it all the way out to your hitch so you know the A frame is in the right spot
I appreciate the overall insight and tips of how to construct a trailer which as you stated: "isn't rocket science." 10 years later and this is the best video I’ve found on UA-cam!
That trailer is probably still out there somewhere too😂
These type of guys are priceless. No amount of money could beat the quality of building it yourself. Well done. Great build. Trailer will outlive the truck most likely lol

I've watched this video a handful of times through out the years. Still the best. Currently starting my own build and wanted to just brush up.
Hey man I want to thank you for posting this. It helped me greatly while building a trailer. You are the man!
Nice video. Lots of thought and details and pragmatic ideas. Only took me 10 years to find this! 😂
I have to tell you your are the most sincere and honest at how to build this that I've ever seen.
The way I pack bearings without making a mess is I put them in a zip lock baggie with a big blob of axle grease. Seal it up and you can work the grease into the bearings without getting it everywhere.
hahaha great tip! I'll have to try it.
Great idea! I'm borrowing that.
Great idea
Thats a awesome tip. I'm definatly going to try it this way next time, thanks.
Disposable gloves for me.
“Measure twice, cut once.” - Norm Abrams. Works in wood, works in steel. Good advice, always. Nice video.
Thank you! I am re-furbishing a 4x8, and wasn't sure about fenders, or the ramp. Thank you for the "details" on how to do that.

That's the best on UA-cam about how to build a utility trailer!
These kind of videos are better than Hollywood. Thanks for all the tips!!

Different choices for different voices. Very inspirational tutorial build. It's bout as straight forward, no frills as one could get. Good job!
I’ve never seen such glowing comments for anyone other than Ave. I’m looking forward to seeing this, I’m sure it’s good...😁
hollywood couldnt make something so educational, good work
Just a suggestion- I use conduit for all my wiring and line clamps. You this will all but eliminate shorts in the lights, And should you get one, it's easier to rewire.

You explained everything to where everyone with some welding skills can do. Well done

I'm building a utility trailer and I'm using your video for a guide and a 48in tail gate and how you pined the tail gate answers it thumbs up.
Super nice tutorial on how to build a trailer!!! Exactly what I was looking for! Awesome job and thanks very much for sharing your knowledge!
Very informative! All I need now is to learn how to weld!
learn how to mig weld , its like using a hot glue gun
Truly is just practice.
Very good tutorial, thanks for pointing out loophole and to planning ahead. Thanks again. BIG THUMBS UP!👍
How much did it costs you in materials?

Great video! I've been thinking of putting together a small camp trailer. You shared some great tips and advice. Thank you!
Good job on this trailer,,,, you seem to take pride in the work you put into it. Keep it up and hope to see more of your work.
BEST WAY PACKING GREASE TO BEARINGS -BEEF IT UP . . GREAT JOB . .

Really nice trailer. And you make it look easy to build
Great video man. It truly was like being in the shop with you learning how to build this, thanks.
Very thorough instructions! Great build!
This is just awesome! Great skill and excellent instruction! Thank you for taking the time to teach us!
Very detailed video buddy!! Sorry about the first comment I made earlier but it definitely made me made when I couldn’t hear the details on some important things i was needing to no!! Thanks for the tutorial mate, felt like i was in shop class with a teacher who knew how to teach.
to take the time out of your day and make this video was awesome! thanks man!
Great vid..exactly what I'm hoping to build this winter for our kayaks with a few minor tweaks. Thank you for the post!
great job... I'm building one for the same thing... the threaded rod for the hinge is actually better for some light duty applications... it allows lube to stay longer because of the ridges rather than a smooth surface that will allow it to just run off.... thanks for the video!!!
grease zerks
good job on the trailer looks good should have shown some of the welding and different types you used good job tho thinking doing the same soon
you are the best Building trailers my man....
Thank you for sharing this.. now time to make my trailer for my grill and smoker.. much appreciated
Awesome job, you gave me the confidence to make my own
Excellant. Now I understand the theory of trailer making and how to make mine.I
Thank you
Nice information!! Beautiful end product
Nice job Brother I enjoy watching your video I am a Welding man too
This video has pushed me off the fence. I started my build today.
Nice looking trailer, thanks for the video.
Thank you for taking the time to upload this!
You make really good videos and you explain things really well.
Bro, Hollywood sux jiblets, so do most of their movies, dont worry about them, you're doing a great job.
I appreciate the overall insight and tips of how to construct a trailer which as you stated: "isn't rocket science." Understand that I'm not trying to be critical, but [to me], nonstop explanations re: the obvious was too much. With the exception of the exposed wiring, the trailer you built far exceeds any "off the lot" trailers that are sold today [2020]. Thanks for the video; I'm sure you've helped a lot of ppl.
I loved all of the quality comments in this video that explains everything. I'm going to put my everlast welder to good use this summer.
Very informative video. Thank you, Sir!
You did an awesome job! Anything worth doing is worth doing right. You nailed it.
Im thinking the safety chains need be bolted to the frame? In canada they are anyway. Awsome build video!
Sir first of all I like to thank u for your time
I have a question for u I bought this trailer is 18 x 7 and is a dove tail and when I bought it din't took notice of that now I live in S.C. Aiken and is a lot of hills and the tail that is hanging on the back is too low
now my question is if you can put air bags to lift it or shocks o what can I do to lift it at least 6'' form the ground please help me with this problem. thank u again sir from a D.A. veteran.
