I've been a professional welder for over 40 years and I think you are doing a fine job on your trailer. I didn't see any mistakes that were detrimental to your build, and I was watching for them, I admit. You do fine work.
thank you so much!
Maybe you can help me. If you are doing a 2 axle less system(Timbren half axles) how do you calculate the placement of of the centers for the axles on the base frame?
@@KrazyKajun602probably to late but , just measure from center of spindle to center of spindle!
I've spent the last two weeks watching videos of others building trailers and researching for my own trailer build, you are the first to actually explain the tongue length and it's calculations. So thank you, you've saved me from making mistakes on mine
Awesome!
Matt, I got whisked back to my high school days when you used SOH-CAH-TOA. Way back in 1963 in my trig class, our math book had a cartoon of a Native American wearing a chief headdress with one moccasin removed from his foot. The Indian chief was soaking his foot and wiggling his toes in the cool water of a stream. His name was, you guessed it, Chief SOH CAH TOA! Thanks for that, I'll be smiling all day.
What a wonderful story, it put a smile on my face! :) In my maths class we were just told to remember the words SOH CAH TOA, but I shall remember your story now too :)
Stick welding is so much fun.
Breaking the flux off afterwards is like cracking open a Kinder Surprise. Beneath the chocolate coloured coating is a perfect weld.
True craftsman, knows geometry and trig but struggles with simple subtraction.... great project Matthew, long time sub !
That’s just how it goes some days 😂
Gotta love a guy who lives in Minnesota, and starts an outdoor project in November.
time of year is irrelevant :D
@@mcremona spoken like a true Minnesotian.
21:24 You are pretty darn exciting!
Bob Moffatt would be proud!
hahaha! I like to think he would be
I’m so happy to see an example of trigonometry! I’ve seen so many people say how they learned “nothing about the real world in school, but thank god I can do Pythagorean Theorem.” I’ve used trig for so many different jobs such as machining setups, roof angles, odd shaped furniture, etc. There are so many uses for this kind of math, it really is just up to you to apply them. Thanks Matt for the amazing content!
My Father in Law was a welder. He tried to teach me how but I managed to touch the stinger to my arm thus giving me the shock of a lifetime. That ended my welding career. I love to watch you work. Metal or wood you are truly amazing. Thanks for another great video.
Was the ground clamp on your toe? Touching the stinger shouldn’t zap you unless you were grabbing grounded steel with a bare hand.
@@brucea550 No it was cold and misty day and I was touching the ground.
Now you are in my ballpark, been a fabricator wilder for over 35 years, the trailer is looking good.
Thanks!
Matthew you are brilliant and humble. Thank you for your efforts and knowledge .
thank you!
Hi Matt. You should have a million subs because you are one of the more versatile channels from wood to metal. A true maker. Can’t wait to see the trailer finished.
thanks Dale!
I like Stick also, and also Soh Cah Toa used it for 50 years. Matt you are doing great keep up the good work.
Thanks Harry!
Soh cah toa is about the extent of my memories of trig. I did well in the class but man the whole "if you don't use it, you lose it" is starting to hit home.
Pretty sure that's literally all I can remember. Solely because of the silly acronym
Used trig my entire 35 years of being a forester. Never knew the soh cah toa memory trick! Dang! Oh well, got by somehow. 👍
As a welder by profession, I love the way you pull off your flux from the welds. Very nice looking welds. Love the trailer. Can't wait to see it in action.
thank you!
Pretty darn envious, I haven’t built a trailer like that for years. I’m not going to count them. I would have thought April would have said, come on over and use my nice warm shop with all the toys seeing as you helped me with such a great sawmill build. 😂
Matt is in Minnesota and April is in Texas, can't really just pop over to her shop.
Great update, thanks for posting Matt! That trailer is going to be really solid, when you build it yourself you can make it exactly how you want it. Take care
Thanks Mike!
Extra props for the trig explanation and teacher shout out. Entertaining and informative as always Matt.
Thanks!
The beard shaving thing was great. If you're going to shill a product--have fun with it! That's what I love about Steve Ramsey's ads. They felt more like entertainment than an ad.
Nice work Matt. I too remember my math teachers, saying how important math will be in our adult life! I thank them all every day!
11:40 first time I’ve seen it used too. Makes me feel bad for not paying better attention because I’ve needed it once or twice in the past.
It really sounded like you said “I am pretty darn exciting.” At 21:25. LOL. I’m sure you did say excited, but it made me chuckle. Thank you for sharing your videos.
I haven't been able to watch your videos for a while frankly because I've not had the time, but finally getting a few minutes watching this build i'm reminded why I subscribed. And,the fact that you laugh at your own jokes is priceless. lol
Dam it Matt, now you proved what my parents told me in High School, that Trig would be helpful....
😂😂 they just never tell you how long it will be until you finally use it
@@mcremona great series on the trailer build. Your build videos are my favorite.
Thanks gary!
I was impressed with all the work you did and great machinery you have One of the things I also liked that you didn't stop even though it was snowy weather.
Fantastic! coming out great, I did the same thing back in 1976 building my car trailer, first weld with a new sears 200 amp stick welder still have and use the trailer, nice job Mathew
I highly admire your build it yourself (diy) over buying something someone else made practice.
thanks!
Always wondered if Matt stops laughing once the camera stops or if he keeps laughing thinking to himself man I'm such a goob :) good stuff Matt! Loving the build
I hear he laughs in his sleep
@@mcremona lol
If only everyone had the same attitude as Matt, the world would be a much nicer place .....and less splintered. ;-)
@@mcremona I was told I do that too. AND I whistle and/or hum constantly. Last girl I lived with told me it drove her crazy. SO, I sent her back where she came from. Looking for another laughing, whistling, humming enthusiast if you run across one! hahaha,,.....hummmmmmmm
@@happy_dad4211 Yeah, I noticed he laughs a lot too. When I take on projects like this, and things go right for me, I keep my trap shut, when things go bad, that's when I start saying 'F' and blaspheme and stuff... Guess I've got my 'old man's' attitude!
20:17 min Unbelievable, I never thought you could do it with this space. Respects!
Thanks for sharing! You're a man of many talents! and despite the glasses situation, you're still cool!
I find it hilarious that Dollar Shave Club is sponsoring this! Yes, Matt does shave every so often when he wants to recall his early teenage years but the bearded guy and Dollar Shave: Priceless!
I saw lots of trailers today and they were finished really bad, bad paint, bad floors, bad sloppy cuts etc. I think I can get some of this 6" rectangle tubing in 3/16" wall which will work for me. Awesome project.
much more penetration using the mig ..turn the wire speed up a little , notice the edge of your puddle . 15 yr Ironworker, 15 yr Weld Inspector.. Glad you did so good on weld prep , That is key to full penetration welding . Keep up the great work ..
For a woodworker, you are a very good welder ! LOL Good Job Matt.
No sweat, man. Matt, you are already cool in my book.
It's good to see someone using stick welding as alot of things are done with mig nowadays
Bud that's either mig or flux core.
Advice too anyone doing a build. Do a Straight single beam tongue, not an A-Frame. Use thick material and gusset. Why? Because you can now make 90 degree turns and U turn on a dime. Did all of my builds like this, not sure why no one else does.
For smaller trailers that works but for something like this, A Frame handles the load better especially side to side movement. But yeah I agree that turning is alot easier with straight beams.
Dude that is a badass job you doing there , congrats
I admire your welding skils .
Thanks!
A lot of time learning it for just using trig one time so far... I learned more useable real world stuff in life from my dad in the garage and out in the field fishing and hunting than school did or could ever teach me..
Can you give a breakdown of the different types of steel being used & gauge? Thanks in advance.
Frame is made from 2x6x.25 tube and 4" 6.25lb C channel. Gussets and plates are .25" thick.
Those Fireball jigs make life much easier, they make excellent products. You're right MIG can be a bit boring compared to stick but it is so you can concentrate on your best welds! @6:50, you need a bigger hammer!;) I've built a number of trailers and I probably would have went with the same tube for the cross members, probably a bit overkill but considering what you carry there is nothing wrong with that. May have actually saved some material as well. Overall I think you are doing an excellent job,, you are quite the craftsman in wood or metal! Kudos Bro!
Have to agree with you on stick work and it has a benefit stick is better in open air.
The weld light is mesmerising. 😵 you look so much younger after a shave.
Good job Matt. I highly recommend a Pintle Hitch for this trailer. That's all I have my numerous trailers that size.
Great work! Thanks for taking the time to make, film, edit and share.
I'm 68 and I use trig in the shop all the time
This is fascinating to me, and I look forward to the next video. It takes skill, good workmanship, thinking ability, and so on. Thanks also for the good explanations and excellent video quality.
thanks!
Glad to see your C-channel is facing backward so it doesn't collect road debris. Don't forget to leave weep holes in any closed welds to let out the moisture.
Build is coming along nicely! Great work as always sir.
thanks!
Nice job on trailer. I can see you like doing the build, probably more than you need the trailer. Reason I say that is because using the mig would be so much faster than the stick plus using the stick you have to sweep up the slag and make sure you clean up the user rods or risk getting them in your tires.but I like stick welding too. That's definitely a nice heavy duty heavy trailer
Very Nice job on the trailer and the welding
Thanks!
nice design and great fabrication sequencing, well thought out Matt.
Thanks!
Your welds looked good, especially for someone that doesn't weld often and does trigonometry!
dahveed284 😂😂
This is a nice build! Solid and strong. Made for its purpose for sure!
Matt, you are one very multi-talented dude!
Wow. Well done. Good welding skills. And good math skills
thanks!!
Well done, got my first year of trig in high school, remember SOH CAH TOA very well! Great trailer project, stay warm working on it!
I'm 29 and we didn't even have geometry in high school. I dislike math but it's very useful if you know when to apply it.
Always quality content Matt. Have followed many of your other videos in all areas. Always appreciate the quality of your content and your work. In the process of planning the build of my 24' utility of over deck trailer, still trying to decide which is going to work better for me. mainly for hauling metal and wood material. Mainly from sawmills or metal suppliers.
Again thanks for all the work you put in. in all the conditions you work in.
you make the welding look so easy
Excellent job, Matt !!!
Thanks!
So glad I found your channel, welding shop and sawmill in my works as well! Great job!!!
Funny that when you strarted talking about the tongue layout and measures SOHCAHTOA came to my mind and I was totally surprised to learn that it is the same in English as I have learnt it in Spanish. Great video Matt, thank you!
Where would the center line of that two dual axles be
Your attitude is awesome. keep it up mister!!!!!
Are you a surgeon as well?
There seems to be no end to the list of skills that you have.
FANTASTIC!
I hope you used 7018 welding rod. I also use mig to tack it and 18 for anything over 16 ga. Have for almost all my 77 years....and never had a fail.
Great work. Those welds look good! That thermometer was awesome.
Nice work, Matt!
I can appreciate where you're coming from on the welding. But man, if I had that job to make, I would love to TIG weld it. I find TIG welding to be very Zen.
considering the coordination it requires.. Zen is almost a requirement =p
Agreed on TIG welding, but good Lord. Doing a trailer that size with TIG would take ages! It's so slow.
7018 has plenty of zen to suit me! 😁
Hang Zen. I dig stick.
Just a good tip for those that want to do mig welding.... grind off the mill scale before welding when using a mig..
Dollar Shave Club...Don't Mess with the Zohan! Silky smooth! It would have made for a good video if you had made the cuts. Like that time the drill press fell over!
Matt...you laugh a lot for no reason, I like that 😃
I'm a guy talking to himself. That's pretty funny :D
Good lord look at the size of those tires!!! Great job so far. Looking forward to the next video.
Was thinking that as well
I can see why you prefer stick over MIG. Well done!
thanks!
That's amazing, did the same now making alot of money
I'm doing a similar project. But im taking a sail boat trailer and making it shorter as well as rebuilding the axle beam, installing a galvanized steel floor, and rebuilding the suspension.
Doing a great job Matt!!!! well done with your welding!!!!!!
As always, great video and project Matt.
Thank you!
Very nice coming along nicely
thanks!
I understand building the saw mill. I’m sure there is a bunch of red tape registering a built trailer, etc. Wouldn’t it have been more efficient to manipulate an existing new trailer or couldn’t you find one that gave you the specifications you needed? Cost issue, etc. I would be curious to hear your thought process in this. Thanks for sharing this! Fascinating.
In the first trailer build video Matt discusses the cost vs buying one and his reasons for building a custom trailer.
fast 21:48...… well spent. beautiful work
thanks!
If U live near a sherwin Williams should go in there and get so gray kem bond for the trailer for a primer and use sher kem for your top coat it is a very fast drying implement paint
too cold for that paint right now
@@mcremonayeah it is getting a bit cold . I work for the company and use those paints and primers on most any of my medal work I love the primer, it has a very high iron content in it that way it will rust before substrate. And love that line of paint since its dry to the touch in about 15mins .
Nice smooth stick welds!
thanks!
Nice welds. Impressive build thus far Matt.
thanks!
Matt, Excellent progress! Those welds look really good!
Thanks Mac!
Back in the 70s my maths teacher, Mr Whitely, taught us:
Some Officers Have
Curly Auburn Hair
To Offer Attraction
That has always stuck with me, and I still use it quite often. I much preferred trigonometry to calculus.
I was the other way. Hated math until calculus where suddenly everything made sense because they finally showed the applications of all the math we had been learning up until that point.
@@mcremona I understood and used trig from day one. It made sense to me. Calculus made no sense at all, even though I could see the application and usefulness. I just never really understood it and only applied it 'mechanically' to pass exams. Never been able to make use of it since. Must be some sort of mental block on the process, or poor teaching from a later teacher.
@@Maker_of_Things I am a Civil Engineer and have used everything except calculus. Am retired and 73.
Great job by the way very technical especially your trigonometry
Very nicely done!
Fluid, man! I can see why you prefer to stick weld.
Wow you are very professional well the guy I'm believable beautiful job
thanks!
Hi Matt your laughs are fantastic !
thanks!
Awesome build! I wonder if using hydraulic rams on the side of the arm instead of the cable setup would be better? Safer for sure!
Less travel unless you have some really long rams
Nice job Matt, it would be cool if you could go over costs to see how it compares to buying one and if you are covering the weight limits of your build
See part 1. thanks!
Our trig function mnemonic was "Oscar had a heap of apples":
"Oscar had" -> opposite / hypoaneuse;
"a heap" -> adjacent / hypoaneuse;
"of apples" -> opposite / adjacent
for sine, cosine and tangent respectively.
I use geometry and trig often enough that I remember the basics. I've forgotten the double angle identities though, but I remember they exist so I can look them up when I need to.
I've also used Law of Sines and Law of Cosines often enough to remember them.
I don't think I've ever used Law of Tangents.
Some = old / hags
Can’t = afford / husbands
Till = old / age
