The only UA-camr with the Deck that cared enough to explore the Steam Input. Thanks for this. As a fan of the Steam Controller, Steam Input is my number 2 reason to get this device, it is just so versatile.
It's so crazy to me how little Steam Input and the Deck's controls on general are being covered. People seem to still not realize how big an enabler this is for handheld pc gaming.
While I've always found Aya and other brands' handheld to be intriguing, I've only really considered buying a handheld PC since the Deck got announced...and that's because of the trackpads and Steam Input mostly, not only SteamOS. These features are such a game changer, or to put it under another light it specifically DOESN'T change the games since you can play so many of them regardless of what kind of input the developer considered for their game.
This is exactly why I love my Steam Controller and why I'm excited to get my Deck! The controls are definitely underhyped on here. The customization options are on another level and they're taken for granted. It's the main thing that immerses you in the game, and the fact that you can customize them on such a granular level with Steam input is mind-blowing!
I'm still excited for my Deck, but man is it frustrating not being able to explore the rest of what hundreds don't cover, three months to go still
Yes I definitely can enjoy Player 2 support on a portable , , , ,👍👽🎸
Even now Rog Ally is already came out and no reviewer mention about superior steam input as one of pros for steamdeck in comparison videos
Thank you for putting so much effort into showing Steam Input. I have been absolutely in love with it since I got my Steam Controller. But it seems like people don't understand how powerful this utility ACTUALLY is. :) This video showcase that perfectly!
I have to say that my favorite setup for these sorts of MMOs has been to mimic FFXIV's "Cross Hotbar" setup with the triggers enabling ABXY + the DPad for abilities, so 8 buttons on each trigger (including both). I've got that setup with Star Trek Online right now and it's great, especially their approach to Trigger + Shoulder Button = Tab Target, so you can keep targeting while moving.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for showing Button Chords! I was trying to figure out how to do both triggers held down and this makes a huge amount of sense!
Because of the little-to-no-coverage on Steam Input, I was hesitant to get the Steam deck.
I finally bought the Steam deck, accepting the fact that I wont be able to play EVERYthing…
But thanks to content like your, it further solidifies the best deduction to go handheld and enjoy PC from anywhere!! Thank you for this video !
I know it’s old but only recently got my deck. This was so useful, you are the only one who actually shows how to use the deck well. Subscribed.
Thank you
Never got a Steam Controller so I never digged into Steam Input. But man, is it glorious. I can't believe a feature so game changing went under the radar for so long.
Well some of the best stuff of steam input was added 1-2 years into the lifespan of the steam controller, but yes, most testers simply did not get it and dismissed the controller as a gimmic. People have gotten it however over time what potential this controller had and thats also the reason why it is now highly regarded as one of the most innovative controllers of all time.
I am glad that valve did not remove the touchpads, they make the controller really stand out over the normal xbox based controller average console. You can use a ton of functions also with a standard controller and steam input but you will lose the touch pad based mouse control or touch pad based custom radial menus you can set up and also you will lose gyro aim.
this was SO useful and prepped a fully functional swtor layout in such a short amount of time. ty!
Stuff like this is why I love my Steamdeck. I try to explain to people it does way more than just being a new Switch
This didn't go over every option available but it did open my eyes to more customization for controls. Love it.
As a keyboard guy who has always heavily customized his inputs I’ve been watching old steam input videos as I knew that the steam input system was something that I’d like a lot.
You just added a whole new level I was not aware of. I had seen and thought the radial menu stuff was incredibly useful but I had never seen these double press functions that you did. That will be useful.
I had seen a single key to activate an action layer but not two. I can see some intriguing possibilities for that.
Nice vid. I look forward to more. I can’t wait for Q3 to try all this out on my deck. I’m sure I’ll be back rewatching this once I have mine in my hands as I try theses methods out.
Just got my Steam deck in today. You are the best! You’re out here changing lives and doing the lords work! 😂 Thank you!
Thanks for this. Thankfully I got my Deck already and mingled with some of it but being able to configure sequences for non controller optimized games is huge. The amount of customization possible is crazy. Makes me regret that I never really did warm up to my Steam Controller in the past.
Honestly one of the best videos on steam deck I've ever seen - fall you for explaining button remapping simply and clearly much appreciated
This didn’t end up having the info I was looking for, but I wanted to say you’re an incredible presenter.
Just wanted to let you know that after 2 years this is still the best and pretty much the only actual good guide on these settings.
I love learning about all these possibilities. I don't think I currently play any games where I would need to do any of this, but I love knowing about the options.
This is an old video, BUT you just saved my Steam Deck's Life! I was about to send it back if I couldn't figure this out! I'm a subscriber for life now. You're stuck with me lol.
@@dexsimmer4613 if you want more tips for steam input, I recommend also watching Ramble Can’s steam controller videos. Pretty much everything can apply to the deck.
These control options look so freaking amazing, I can’t wait to get my steam deck to play with it.
This is awesome. I played SWTOR with controller many years ago. It was a chore to setup but was super fun for casual play. Steam Deck makes it so much easier. Thanks for the video
I did this with the steam controller when beta released all those years ago! It's ridiculously easy, shocked there's no good community template for the deck? Good content, really nuts to see how far the controller configs have come.
hey man, make more of these. when I got my steam controller, there were only a few comprehensive tutorials. as we know valve doesn't explain it very well (the reason I feel that the steam controller died). I will not use anything else. I love my controller and have games with multiple shift modes and inputs. Also for anyone who is reading this, it is best to make your own configurations instead of trying to use someone else's. Thank you nerdnest. love you guys.
Bravo Bill! These deep dives you do on the Steam input interface are invaluable. This video came at the perfect time as I just received my Deck this week and was trying to understand the different settings for input and was getting frustrated. I look forward to more tutorials in the future. Keep up the great work.
Bill, this is the most dang helpful thing. I don't have a Steam Deck yet, but I know where to go when I'm trying to setup my controls. You're awesome as always. Keep up the good work.
This is the second video of yours I've watched and, I have to say, you explained this not-very-intuitive (but powerful) configuration system very well. Liked, of course, and already Subscribed.
You have convinced me that after rewatching your video once I have my steam deck I’ll be able to pull this off. Thank you kindly, you have a new subscriber.
Enjoy.
Finally my input series it's back. Keep it up Nerd
Just got my steamdeck and loving your tutorial - thanks for making a video that's easy to understand and follow!
Sub commands is something I've been looking for, but only just now found thanks to you!
im late here but my steam deck is coming in about 3 days and ive been wanting to find a way to play Swtor and Bill your tutorial on Steam input not only makes that possible but makes the steam deck and gaming on it that much more exciting for me. Thank you for the excellent video and glad to see you used to run a good ol bounty hunter like my self!
How has the SWTOR experience on your deck been so far brother?
Takes some getting used to but really fun. Of course limited but when you’re just doing some fun easy stuff or casually playing away from a desk it’s great!
Thank you this is a video I been waiting for since I saw it in live stream like the possibilities to fine tune game inputs, so much tweeking 😀 can't wait till July lol
I truly love those vids! At some point I'd love to see a tutorial going through every options the Steam Input can offer as the possibilities look overwhelming
Very useful! I figured out the use of subcommands for a game I was tring, but some of the other commands I was not sure how to setup. This video help, thanks! Nice to know about the radial menu, will be very useful.
First off, I just want to thank you for putting in the error. I just received my steam deck and this was one of the first games I had to get. this was amazing. I actually followed the whole thing before I realized you can download it from the community tab in the controller settings. all the controls were amazing and easy to get use to. Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed the video but what error?
@@NerdNest The error when you accidentally bound your right hand side to skills 1-3 shift 1-3 instead of 7-9.
I appreciated that you didn't edit that part out.
Thank you for these guides. I've learned so much seeing how you set up the controls. I was late to the party with the Steam controller and got overwhelmed because I didn't know how to start or what could be done. Great instruction, and gives me some new ideas on how to use these features.
Hey man, my deck comes in on Wednesday and i plan to play kotor. No doubt this video will be very useful. Ty for taking the time to post!
Thank you! I've never used anything but a keyboard and mouse and I'm left handed. I received my Steam Deck about a week ago and had just about given up on playing with the built in controls. I will try to use your video to help me set it up so I won't have to use a keyboard and mouse.
My man's dedication is over the top!
This was exactly what I was looking for when trying to set up for WoW. Thanks for the video.
So Jealous, can not wait to get my steam deck. keep the videos coming. :)
thanks! that helped. i wasn't sure what some of the functions do, and what some functions are called. this clears out a lot of confusion
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Its quite daunting to look at on the Deck. You’ve given me the confidence to do it all 👍💫
Thank you for making such an awesome tutorial! this really helped with getting my steam deck setup for these types of games!
Thx! I’m trying to map a custom layout to play Grounded with my Nintendo Pro Switch Controller, and this helps a ton.
Wow. Amazing tutorial. I had a thousand questions. All answered. Thank you.
I learned so much with your tutorial. Amazing structure and pacing. You the man
Yeah I really like how customizable the UI is with SWTOR and watching a tab target MMO when no developer who made this thought, "how to get this working on a controller scheme" man the steam deck is on another level with customization.
Thanks!
Thank you!!
Thanks for the incredibly useful tutorial. You've explained things in an easy to follow and concise manner. I really appreciate the time you've put in to explain Steam Input in your various vodeos.
The question i have isn't related to Steam Input. What i really want to know is where did you find the theme for the virtual keyboard you're using on the Steam Deck?
You're very welcome! That theme for the keyboard is only available to people that have the 512 version of the deck.
Hey Bill literally going pro on the deck and steam input binds W
Man that's is crazy, I had no idea you could do all this.
Damn I love Steam input it allows me to use and control my entire PC with a Ps4 controller
Amazing video. So. If I wanted to adjust gyro sensitivity while zooming, I could make an action LAYER with half gyro sensitivity, then add a sub-command for LT tying it to that action layer, so that when I hold LT to zoom, it activates the new gyro sensitivity for the scope. Beautiful!
This is so helpful. Greatly appreciated Bill!
You are an absolute legend. I can't wait to try this in WoW Classic
I imagine I will spend more time tweaking stuff in steam input than actual gaming. Such fun
BROOO thankyou so much, this really helped and the tutorial was really easy to use as well :)
Great video you can also set the track pad up as a zone touch pad so you can touch any of the 6 inputs just by touching that area of the track pad I wouldn't go with more than 9 though 3x3
All your layouts are actually also available in the old big picture editor of the desktop mode Steam Client. In there you can set the icon or add a name, both of which are currently unavailable in the new edit UI. However they do both show up when viewing or using the layout in the new gaming mode and you can continue to use the new UI to edit other buttons (buttons with icons or names will only revert when you edit that particular button)
I’m aware. That seems like a huge hassle.
Your doing such great work with these training videos! I cannot wait for my deck someday 😅
The best Steam Deck video ever made today!!
Amazing guide for setting up MMOs on the deck, thank you.
Hi! Thanks so much for the tutorial, its helping me out a ton. The only problem i have comes with the button chord. For some reason, it doesnt work and chooses either one side or the other when I press the triggers together, any idea as to why that could be?
This is pure gold, thanks for sharing.
Hi! I have recently bought a steam deck and your vids are a life saver! Thank you.
I followed your guide on action layers/radial menus and have Oblivion running like a dream now. Do you know how I could do the same for Skyrim? Skyrim works perfectly but because of the controller layout, I’m limited to 2 hotkeys which is awful. However when I try to use the mouse and keyboard layout to remap everything and get hotkeys, Skyrim won’t recognise the steam deck as a keyboard/mouse :( any ideas?
Excellent tutorial! I’m going to try this out!
I have an imperial agent I absolutely love using! luckily im geared and set for poison dmg over time and have most of my abilities set to 2 combos sets.
"Piano games"
That's a good name for those games lmao
I haven't noticed anyone else making a comment about this, but does anyone else have the issue where when using the right stick to look around the pointer shows up on screen and makes it so you can't look around?
Yes. I also can’t get the double-tapping to use Shift commands to work. Steam automatically switches the extra command (1, double press) and sub command (shift). So if I do it exactly like the video, as soon as I exit the controller settings, the extra command becomes Shift (double press) and the sub command becomes 1
Have you saved this as a Steam community profile so we can all use it? Thanks for all the great videos
Unfortunately, this doesn't have what I'm looking for: How to rename individual sub/extra commands. But this is still really well-made, and definitely a great resource. Liked and saved. 👍
Thank you so much for this! I'm gonna get back on SWTOR, once I get my Steam Deck.
Hi there, this video convinced me to get a steam deck, very informative. My questions are (I might have missed it) is it possible to get your interface settings/toolbar settings? Also, what remote play settings do you use? It looks much better than mine. Thank you!!
15:27 this is super super easy, I'm gettin a headache already 😫
Btw you can put the side menus on a radial menu powered by the trackpads and if you are using the trackpads for something else you can use the back buttons to change the commands of the trackpads
True, but then I’d have to look at the menu, think about what the button is then, finger on trackpad, find the right key, and release. Or I can just reach over and hit the appropriate icon with my thumb.
It would work better with touch menus as they are rectangular (though you can't change the shape to 6x2, so that sucks a little)
this tutorial is super helpful tysm for making this!
The video I have been waiting for thanks.
Loving the channel and the Steam Deck content! Thank you!
Thanks for watching
Excelente video and game configuration.. I love it. I'll use it when i get my steam deck in Q3 😥
I've always been a touch menu user, but the radial menu's ability to cancel an action by returning to the center of the menu is nice. The only downside is that with a touch menu, the icons can still be decently sized, even with 16 of them (Yes, I use 16 actions in a touch menu. Civ V.)
Don't forget you can set up an action set which is active when holding one of your back paddles. I use this to access some lesser-used keyboard shortcuts in a second touch/radial menu on the same pad.
4:20 thats great information sub command.
Awesome rundown of steam input, thank you.
You’re the best. This is rad. 🎉
Take a drink every ti he says “to stay super organized “
Geez I Needed this! Thank You! this channel has been clutch. #Subbed
This is GREAT! I know I’m late to the party but I have a small issue. The right analog still controls the cursor so much that it’ll start to move quite a bit, little by little… is it possible to keep it still with these bindings?
Thank you for the simplest tutorial.
Nice video. Gonna try it out
Only problem is when I go back to PC even with saved layouts and importing keybinds I'll need to move the abilities 😂
But still great.
Drag the volu for the setuper track that you're recording into all the way down.
A couple of question here can you please answer
1. Which steam deck are you using
• The 64GB that cost 399.00$
• The 256GB that cost 529.00$
• The 512GB that cost 649.00$
2. Will I be able to play the save data I have from my laptop or will I start all over on all my characters?
I followed the steps but the hold left trigger just isn’t working for i put the command just like you and nothing
Thank u soo much. i was wondering y it didnt soft the sa for as well
OK, so with a little bit of patience, I will be able to play Guild Wars 2 on my Steam Deck. Thank you for this awesome video.
Im still trying to get press two buttons in the same time to act as one button
i wish it had an cross hot bar option, take a look at final fantaus 14 for example
Could help me try to figure this out please 😢
The ability for the deck to account for double-presses is impressive, but it seems to me that it would require increased latency/input delay on receiving button presses, because it has to "wait" for a short bit to see whether it's a single press or turns into a double press.
How does that work? Does it have such an input delay by default, or does it only introduce it in the event you set up a double-press bind? Would the delay apply only to the relevant button?
*_I used this guide to set up FFXIV. Yes, assigning double presses and long presses does introduce latency on that button for a single press. You can assign how long that latency is in the settings. For MMOs, this isn’t a big deal at all. If you need pixel perfect inputs, I wouldn’t recommend doing it._*
There a way I can pick up loot easily? Still learning all the buttons but not sure the pick up button is. Thank you.
As always fantastic video can't wait to get my deck. Also please steam do Steam controller 2.0!
Can you make macros? Like macro I could put in a loop to farm some material in a game?
Love this guide man. Thx alot. Oh how do u get the speeder and heal boxes on the screen. @20:40 im totallybnew to game
