Very good guide I've used steam input for years for my steam controller, switch pro controller, Duelsense controller, etc. And I still learned something!
This video is underrated! Back in the day, I got 2 steam controllers (with the steam link!) and I didn't know some of the things you can do with Steam Input until I watched this. What a nicely produced video btw!
Maybe I'm not understanding well, but Steam input is both complex and interesting, while not easy to comprehend until you really mess with all the possible options. I figured out how to assign multiple sequences using start press and release press.
I used steam input on my deck to play SWTOR. The radial menus definitely helps with any MMO and all of the menus you usually use with a keyboard. That ALONE makes it amazing
24:16 You really dropped the ball on this explanation. Action Sets are used to completely change the controls depending on scenarios. Common sets are "Gameplay" set vs. "Menu" set, but other sets include "On foot", "Vehicle", "Mini-Game", "Quick-Time-Event", or different characters. A Steam Input supported game will use Action Sets to define when to use different controls as soon as the scenario changes, but for all other games, action sets can be swapped with a button combination.
So best overview I have found. Issue is I’m looking for how to apply a virtual menu. It notes something about the right stick pressed and moved. But I cant seem to actualy trigers it or find, another command that allows me to track it onto a button
Hi. Great overview. I play games Dos games through the Dosbox Staging Flatpak. The steam input is great for mapping keyboard controls to the Steam Deck Controller. I do have a question around the mapping of modifiers and key combination. For example a dos space sim requires CTRL-E to eject. Firstly the virtual keyboard doesn’t cater for the CTRL or ALT modifier. Secondly it appears, although you can map CTRL and E as subcommand to a Steam deck button, steam does not recognise the CTRL modifier. This is NOT the case with the SHIFT modifier though. Any ideas?
Hi ! Just saw the whole video and it was awesome 👍 I have a question, i would like to know if this configurations will apply to external Controllers 🎮 as well? Also you can make another part if external controllers work in a different way. Thanks and greetings 🍩
This would be so helpful with chapters, if you could add them. I'm surprised the gyro configuration is called "pretty well explained" when the new Gyro-to-Mouse is actually the most confusing option in all of Steam Input to me and worst documented in-GUI. I'd love a video going over this.
This is a great tutorial, but I’m such a newbie that the moves I’m looking for are not evident. I am playing subsistence which has buildable functionality that rotates objects, push or retract the held item (wall, platform, ceiling etc). I’ve tried several different sets using the action or 9:31 other numlock multiple commands to try do so without success. I know it’s got to be possible on the Steam Dreck but can’t figure it out. Any suggestions? Note all of my known current buttons, triggers, bumpers, track pads, & joysticks appear to be mapped to in-game actions.
Hello. I have a question. So installed sekiro non steam and when i start the game i had the imputs how it was on The Xbox when i played The game for the first Time. And i turn off the deck and when i start the game again i wasnt able to move or do anything anymore only to rotate the camera with the right joystick. Do u know why is this happ? Also one more thing, i can t see the game anymore in comptdata(i have show hidden files on). Thanks.
Idk if this help but i add the setup.exe with steam i dndt changed anything like directory files i installed with proton 6 only proton that worked to install after instalation i entered în the game i exit, delete the setup.exe. Can be because of that and i have to also keep the setup.exe or change smtg
Hi Tech, may I ask you a question regarding deck input in regards to Starbound? I can’t seem to figure out what my “select item/s” button should be. For instance, at very beginning of game you’re told to get your uniform out of your locker. I can open the locker, I can point at the item I wish to grab, but I can’t then select the item & it move to my inventory. I’d be so grateful if you have any tips for me on this! And thank you for this grand tutorial 😊
Great video. I have a question regarding triggers. This recently happened to me as of the beginning of the week. Was using my Xbox controller to play titanfall2 northstar and I guess because of an update, it stopped working and I’ve been remapping my controller since. One of the issues I’m having is when I press the left rigger and release it, the aim sight is still active instead or reverting to hip fire mode. Would you happen to know how to resolve it? Thx
Sounds like an ingame setting that might have been changed. I haven't played Northstar personally but I do recall the normal Titanfall 2 having the option to switch between Toggle ADS and Hold ADS in the gamepad section.
I think the Steam Controller actually has better triggers than the Steam Deck, with a tactile and audible "click" on the full pull. I'm a bit confused why they removed this, it feels like a downgrade.
Buying a new controller is a lot cheaper than buying a new console when parts fail. It's understandable why the controls built into the steam deck have less failure points (and thus less functionality) than a standalone controller
Don't bother with gyro joystick or trackpad joystick if you want to use gyro apply mouse movement on gyro/trackpad. Referring to first person aiming anyway

Excellent video. Been trying to find out exactly these details especially the different button press types and what they do👏🏾
This is very helpful. Thanks
Thank you ! Very helpful. Playing Ready or Not on my Steam Deck.
I had to leave a comment to help with UA-cam. Good video

There's a lot I like about steam input like using mouse region as the entire screen with the right trackpad for cursor based games.

thx mate. Just got into gyro on PC and in combination with SI its so insane what we can do. I can't stop modding inputs lol
Great tutorial! Now I just wish I could find your Starbound layout to download haha
Did you publish your starbound inputs to the community layouts I would love to try them out
It's still a work in progress!

External controllers can be defined in a similar way but depending on what controller you have, you may end up with different results
This video is gold
Is button chord essentially just mode shift-lite then? Thank you for the Analog Emulation tips, sounds like exactly what I'm looking for.
I really wish there was a way to swap the tiggers and bumpers unless I’m missing something.
You can swap any button to any button. The only thing you would lose is analogue input if you moved triggers to bumpers.
@@runadumb any way you can tell me how? When I look it has triggers and bumpers separate.
This would be so helpful with chapters, if you could add them.

Will be adding chapters in a bit. And I guess you are right. Due to the more complex nature of gyro it may warrant a totally separate video.

Still having a hard time understanding a "button Chord"
Think of it like a piano / guitar chord, i.e. playing multiple notes / buttons at the same time.

You have to drag and drop it to your inventory much like you would with a mouse.
@@HiTechLoLifethanks so much!!
@@HiTechLoLifeMakes sense, and forgive me but how do I click on it to drag to inventory
You should have set one of the triggers to left click. It's a KB+M only game so you need to think about it from a keyboard and mouse perspective.
@@HiTechLoLife thank you so very much! I hadn’t set anything to left click, I’ll do that this afternoon!
You think mapping starbound was bad? Im trying to map CDDA, look up the commands for that…..

Tried that. Still stays on ads
how do I do this on an xbox controller for steam?

What was the games used in the video? Starbound but im not sure the one after
Ah should've specified. If you're talking about the first person game it's 7 Days to Die
Sorry about that. The second game showed i believe- it looks like dead cells but im guessing its a different game?
Oh if you're talking about on the Legion Go that was Dead Cells.
@@HiTechLoLife thank you!
