    This pattern was my very first ever lesson in knitting when I was around 10 or 11 years old (about 55 yrs ago!) I learned with the ridges, but later on eliminated them (much more comfortable in my opinion) from the pattern and simply knitted up to the toe part and finished up with the ribbing. I also crocheted a border around the top where the foot goes in; sometimes just single or half double crochet and sometimes a fancier shell around the top. I also crocheted a nice long chain to weave in and out along the top for a "shoestring" to tie to secure the slipper to the foot. The people I gave the slippers to always appreciated that. And sometimes little girls like pompoms on the tops of their slippers, and I have also done that.

      Me too! 😊 It was, with a scarf (that I still have), my first knitting too when I was around 3 years old... I was putting pompons on my slippers that were done by maman as my little hands were not agile enough to do pompons... many eons ago 😂 and I am still knitting them today with variants similar to yours... as people and my family always demand them... would I dare putting a number of those I knitted in all my life? Surely not... but it must be an flabbergasting amount. I find that incredible that this simple pattern circumnavigate that long through time.

    Fond memories. About a month ago, I was telling my 9 year old granddaughter about these slippers while planning to teach her how to knit. Back in the late 50's or very early 60's, these slippers were the first thing I ever knit. It came in a kit with wooden needles. She is going to start using my original size 10 1/2 wooden needles!

      That is so amazing. Your Grandaughter is gonna love and cherish those memories. My mom passed away 7 years ago , and she taught me how to knit at 8 years old. Mind you she always did my cast on and cast off, and finally I am now able to do it alone, but last week I decided to start knitting newborn hats to donate to the NICU in Honour of my daughter Autumn who passed away at 7 weeks old. And I've been knitting everyday since last week and I feel so at peace . And remembering my memories with my Mom. Enjoy knitting with your granddaughter

    Thank you so much!!!! As a very new knitter, I did up a modified Granny Slipper last night with a double stranded sole to make it thicker and softer. At the end of the pattern, it said sew it up as usual. Seriously!!! Your demo was a life saver! I'm knitting slippers for the Seaman's Mission in Halifax, Canada. So far, this is the third pattern I have experimented with. I still haven't decided but I certainly am learning a great deal. Have a great day.

      Just wondering, did you use worsted yarn? It looks like she is useing bulky or super bulky but the pattern calls for a size 6mm needle so I dont see how great that would work with thick yarn.

    • @lynellwithers3405
      @lynellwithers3405 3 роки тому +1

      @@laciemarie5234 Yes, I use Red Heart Super Saver (RHSS) weight which is a worsted weight. Interestingly, RHSS is so popular in Canada, stores are now selling their own stores brands in direct competition but RHSS has more colors and I still like it better.

    • @amyahdocq8835
      @amyahdocq8835 2 роки тому

      @@laciemarie5234 Years ago, I modified the pattern to knit them in a thinner yarn for the summer... it looks very nice... you just have to make a sample, calculate the size on an already done slipper, and knit. Of course, it takes a bit more time but it looks great too :) A pattern of infinite possibilities 🌹

    Those were the ones Granny used to make. There was always a drawer full. They weren't made in 'pairs', and CERTAINLY were NEVER all one color! (well, at least for the Family!) They were utilitarian, and meant to be worn and worn out. They were always made of scraps, a little of this color, a little of that. Brown, yellow, orange, maybe green or red. I sure wish I had a pair now. Love in every stitch!

    I followed directions, using two strands of the proper weight yarn given in the directions. I have knitted my share of scarves, shawls and beanies and just wanted something quick. My husband requested these. I followed directions for a size L. They turned out enormous. Hubby wears size 12 shoes and these were easily an inch two 'tall' and an inch too long. I am hoping that I can shrink them in the dryer.

    My Grandmother made these as do I for last 50 years...the Pompoms are put up near the top at the end of the closing. I found if you thread sew the pompom after the gather and close it will last longer. They however do not last the life of the slipper. I also have put leather soles mine. That is tricky the last pair I added some hot glue with the stitches to insure they hold but you must be precise. At the toe I will bury the tail yarn as I cross close the hole in front. If you don’t darn this you really feel the draft in the cold winter months. I have been wearing these slippersmy whole life. I also have made the crochet pattern and I will actually make two pairs together with the crochet for warmth since crochet is drafty with the crochet stitch..they are nice as well.

      Would you be willing to share the crochet version you made for this pattern? Our grandma knit these slippers for the whole family every Christmas, but she has since passed & we’re all so sad not to receive grandma’s slippers this year.
      I’d love to continue her tradition, but I don’t know how to knit, just crochet.
      Thank you for your consideration! I hope to hear from you soon. If you would like to share your crochet pattern, you can reach me by email at Beth.Lain@gmail.com.

      I would find a bit of yarn in as close to the original color of the slipper as you can. Darn, stitch, sew however you can, to patch the worn spot. Then add a suede sole to the bottom of the slipper with either fabric glue or stitching. You can add a suede sole to the other slippers as well to preserve them for longer.

I found the slippers were coming out HUGE and ended up pulling out all that knitting and using the smallest number for the width. :'( And I do NOT have small feet. That was 23 stitches. For the length, I just knitted and measured on my foot to see when I should start shaping the toe.
