The homeowner called and said the house was cool before leaving to go to work. Upon returning from work, the house was hot. What is the problem and what action needs to be taken to correct the proble?
Extremely thorough overview of common thermostat problems. As usual, very clear and concise with no unnecessary fluff. Many thanks Craig, and keep up the great work. Much appreciated!
Great video for tstat trouble shooting. Lots of problems to choose from. Easy way to out rule tstat is jump it out, but then again you can have a short too.
Ray Ray, I thought u might help me that’s exactly what happened to me I jump my thermosthat with a paperclip , ( I was trying to fix a not start heater) now the AC IS NOT working too. Any tip on which part got shorted ? I just want to fix the AC rite now
Ac seevice tech.. As always ,great explanation of problems that can and do happen frequently with thermostats! Very detailed and as always, Informative video.. Thank you so much for your time and as I've said before..Craig,your a great assett to our hvac industry! Blessing to you and.your family, This holiday season! Bryan Tyler Refrigeration Helotes,Tx
Thanks a lot. My furnace stopped working altogether and it was because of a malfunctioning thermostat which caused by one of the AA batteries leaking. Thanks again.
we have a fairly large AC unit ( has a 24 volt start connector ) outside that runs on Natural gas with a sort of standard forced air heater, When replacing the wall thermostat do i need to get a special amperage rating? What is the difference between a heat pump and an air ( cooler ) conditioner ? Thank you
When I jump red and green wire I get the unit to turn on.. after installing the thermostat cover the unit would run a operate to correct temperature, but would not come back on until I jump the red & green again.. why is that?
Hello could you possibly diagnose my problem? I usually set my AC to 78 in the summer. The AC will reach 78 and shut off. Then once the temp rises it will kick back on as normal. But sometimes it will reach the set temperature and won't come back on at all until I take a small pin and hit the reset button. I just had an AC guy here and he swapped out the thermostat with a new one. Well the problem still persists. A few weeks ago the capacitor was bad and he replaced that as well. Do you think it's the control board?
Question, I have a digital thermostat and live in a two family home and the landlord has the electricity and heat rigged and I've bin noticing that night when it gets cold no matter how high I put the heat the temperature doesn't budge the number stays the same but during the day it's perfectly fine, is it possible that someone else is also tapped into my controls or is there something wrong with the thermostat it self?
I have a thermostat that goes on and off every few minutes or so. I replaced the thermostat with exact same type Honeywell TH8321WF 8000 still no fix. Ac lines are not iced up or anything. Any suggestions?
I have a Bryant electric furnace with A/C. Also have a Bryant smart thermostat. When we bought the house we got a warranty. The a/c went out and was determined to be a blower motor, which was a DC variable speed motor. The warranty repaired (replaced) it. They also had to replace a condensation pump. The thermostat requires us to push a red button to request heat, and set the desired temperature and set the time we want the heater to run. (I hate the smart thermostat) So if I warm the house for 1 hour, after the house is warm, or the 1 hour time is reached, the blower will continue to operate on low speed, (blows cold air) I want to replace the smart thermostat with one I can set the temperature and be able to turn it off if we leave the house. (on/off switch) and also included, (heat/cooling) In my mind, this might take care of the continuous running fan motor. I think the fan motor should stop when the temperature that is requested is reached. Currently the fan will always run even after the temperature or the set time is reached. Any suggestions? I am not impressed with the warranty company Thanks for your advise.
Thanks i fixed my old old did i say old lol furnace with the help of your videos ! Turns out it was just a loose wire nut in the furnace . Thanks man ! Got new sub i will check out your other videos when i get time . Thanks again when you hot you hot when your cold your cold we sure was cold ..
I am having an issue where the temperature readout is incorrect (was reading 58 earlier when it was almost 90 outside and air hasn’t been on). Apparently a battery exploded, which I tried to clean up the best I could but it’s still reading 65-70 when it’s almost 80 outside. I can get it to turn on by overcompensating for temperature and the temperature readout goes down as the house cools but I’d really like it to read correctly and not have it on all day and night until I can get a new thermostat. Unfortunately my toddler will be home tomorrow with another 90+ day scheduled and with this pandemic I can’t just up and jump to a store to get one. Any tricks on cleaning up it better or testing specific components? Can it simply be recalibrated? It is a White Rodgers 1F80-361.
Have 2 heat pumps( trane) with 2 trane thermostats. Both went out at the same time ( opposite sides of house) getting code ‘ heat on… resetting’ on both. How can 2 go out at once?
My furnace wouldn't turn on, and I realized that the problem started after I had changed the thermostat batteries. Checked the thermostat wiring and thought that the excess dielectric grease that was on the male and female terminals was causing a problem, then realized that because of the awkward location where the thermostat was mounted, that the display portion of the thermostat hadn't fully seated all the pins. If you didn't look at it closely, you couldn't see it wasn't seated.all the way It allowed me to run the fan, but not run anything in auto, therefore no call from the thermostat. Motto: Make sure the face plate is fully and evenly seated.
Great video! My issue is different. This is the first time I am using my heater this winter. When I try to manually control and push the "hold" feature to hold the temp at say 64 it won't hold. Just a few seconds later the temp will jump to 68 or 70 or 72. My system never did this before. I changed the batteries and even bought a new thermostat and it's still doing the same thing. There are only a red and a white wires coming out of the wall and they're hooked correctly. I did have to re-light the pilot light--not sure why it burned out. Again, I haven't used the heater since last winter. What else can be wrong?
Hi, should I buy the new thermostat? The adjust temperature down button is working but I need to push it very hard.( it’s White Rodgers thermostat). Thank you in advance for your answer
My AC fan and furnace only kicks on when the thermostat fan is on but not with switch in auto. Also the coil next to the electric condenser hums all the time unless thermostat is switched to auto mode but then neither AC or heater kicks on. In order to have heat or AC the thermostat switch must be in the on position. The AC unit and furnace are about 30+ years old , we rent by the way and have a slumlord so I'm trying to diagnose this on my own. I am a auto/diesel mechanic but know zippo about appliance electronics. Please help , I'm thinking it could be the thermostat, but not sure why the coil for the fan palms all the time. obviously the fan coil is being energized by the thermostat but why isn't the fan coming on ? The a/c fan motor only comes on when the thermostat is in the on position and not in auto ?! Frustrating.... any help would be appreciated .
Sorry to bother yall but I have a Lennox split system. It's a heat pump. When I call for heat, I still getting low voltage to the O terminal. Why? Is it the board? It doesn't have a cube relay.
My gas pack hvac system will come on heats up to settings cuts off, and then doesn't come back on when gets below settings unless I cut it off wait till the thermostat clicks then turn it on just had a new thermostat put in old one done the same. Can you help me
My existing system is Gas Furnace and single AC unit. My existing thermostat has C,G,W,Y and R (no jumper). The new Thermostat has the choice of RC or RH with a jumper. (no R). Question: Which terminal do I place the existing "R" wire to? RC or RH? Do I leave the jumper in or remove?
My furnace thermostat is working but the issue is on winter months our house is a little colder and we need to set it up to 28 degree celcius just to feel the warm. Is there any way that my thermostat is broken?
ive found the newer t87 round honeywell stats do not work well with newer 90-95% systems.....the new systems have so many microprocessors and sensitive electronics that the tstat robs power from the control board and weird things happen....they work great on older systems that are very basic.. that is just my experience.
Sir , I have been auto mechanic since 1975 after my stroke can not work on R&R trans or engine . which book you recomend to learn about furnace .I thank you for your response 👌🙏 🫵 🫶 your videos .
What if my thermostat wont read 24v but i can read 24v on the control board? My thermostat is also blank. Could it be the control board not sending power to thermostat.
@@acservicetechchannel thank you for the reply. I figured it out. I removed the moisture sensor temporally until it dried and the furnace started working again. I was wondering why all the voltage was good but nothing was coming in from thermostat but i saw that puck looking thing with "moisture" light on and i thought at first it was normal. But when i touched it, it was a little wet so I removed it and it started working again. I let the moisture sensor dry for a day and reinstalled it and now its working perfectly again.
So I have a honeywell smart wifi thermostat and a carrier gas furnace. Whenever I run the heat and the furnace does it's heat cycle, soon as it goes into 90 second cool down where the fan keeps goin but the furnace isnt calling for heat my thermostat cuts off and then restarts once it's done. Any thoughts?
What if the batteries in the thermostat are good, the capacitor was recently switched out, and all the switches are on including the breaker, but the thermostat is blank? Any thoughts on that? By the way, I appreciate your extensive knowledge of HVAC systems, even if you go a little fast for me.
Something interesting, I have a LUX Kono thermistat which is an excellent unit. It has many service settings. I noticed the OLD display is warm and I noticed when you select it on it has to compensate temp offset about 2 degrees, I don't keep it on. It has manual temp comp and how much swing per cycle.
Most newer thermostats are around .7 degrees but I would set it for a higher swing then that. They are concerned with comfort more than efficiency with the .7 and .8 setting so if you are still comfortable and able to, you could set it for 1.2 or another setting depending on that type of stat.
I have a Honeywell RTH7560E1001 for our Heat pump & hydro coil from boiler. When it calls for heat , the heat pump reversing valve works properly and then after a short time it turns on the relay for the taco zone circulator pump. But the heat pump seems to been supplying heat. I'm new to AC heat pumps. Will dual heat at the same time cause the heat pump to trip on the high temp side or is this a normal setup?
I forgot to mention , the hydro coil is downstream of the air handler coil. Am I incorrect to believe it won't affect the air handler coil and cause it to possibly to trip the heat pump on the high side ?
Please help, as my HVAC contractor has been unable to address the issues so far. Below are the units which have been purchased and installed in my residence. The installers have spent days re-wiring my Nest thermostats and they still appear to not function properly. Can you provide assistance? Can you provide a definite answer that 3rd Generation Nest should/will work with the below devices? If not, why not and which SMART thermostats will work? I have seen my neighbors with brand new and modern Carrier and Goodman systems which do not have any issues with Nest Gen3. Thank you,
All of a sudden turning on my central cooling causes the heat to turn on, blowing hot air over 95 degrees. I'm hoping this will be nothing but a thermostat change but how can I tell?
I have a thermostat for a bathroom heater, 300w , 20 amp breaker, 240v. I've tried 3 different thermostats at this location, and they don't work here but do work in other places, I test the voltage in the heater and the thermostat and both read 250v and 20 amps, Can someone help me out ?
I don’t think my thermostat is wire to the attic 🧐. We have a new high efficiency furnace and we change twice the thermostat and still is reading wrong the temperature 😢😢. Under the wall thermostat we have the alarm panel I wonder if this one radiates heat. I mean I feel frustrated 😢😢.
I have a 3 month old hvac it turns on heat for 3 minutes before turning on cold ac. Have had tech out 4 times still does it. It heats up to 110 degrees fast and takes like 3 minutes to start ac. I think the heat strip and ac running at same time. any ideas?
On AC or heat setting? You should get ahold of the manufacturer and tell them. If the tech can't figure that out on one trip, you have a very uneducated tech.
@@Bryan-Hensley Ac set to permanent hold or temp hold doesnt matter. Replaced thermo with same supposedly same problem. Used my own old wire i complain say replace wire with new they refuse.
At some point I would love to have one out. It just all takes time. The workbook for the existing book will be out soon. Thanks for letting me know what you would like to see!
If I caused a short when I used a jumper wire on thermosthat, would it be a short on the air handler or a blown fuse . If it’s a blown fuse how will the fuse look like ? Does it look like a car fuse
Dealing w/ an older furnace that has older thermostat like the one in your vid...The unit won't turn off even in the off position...Have to shut it off completely & back on, so as not to run up the electric bill...Could this also be a wire disconnected?..Great vid...
@@lasetlivingstin7752there are multiple things that can cause what you describe it depends on what type of system you have. If I'm understanding you correctly, you have a electric force air furnace.
I just installed an Amazon smart thermostat and the fan keeps running continuously and sometimes it will shut off and then will start back up after 5 seconds
Problem #3 was my issue, batteries were low and not enough power to close the contacts. And dummy me thought the batteries were just for screen light lol.
I work for a company in NJ that serves commercial accounts. I have my universal epa certification and one years experience in the field with no schooling. What might I expect to be getting paid?
OK well help me... thermostat no display light and new battery, new better batteries. New thermostat even, pulled tstat wire to make sure mice or whatever had knicked it. Nothing. Got power to tstat, got power to supply board. Got power for everything. What am I missing
My heat was running and not shutting off with old mercury thermostat so I replaced it with a honeywell programmable one. It worked perfectly for a week, but made clicking sound when heat would come on. Now heat is running without cutting off again. While on it will blow hot air then cold air without shutting off. I troubleshooted the new thermostat and everything was done correctly. NOW WHAT?
Hi, my ac was working great until I changed out the thermostat and now the system is not blowing cold air. I put the old thermostat back on and still blows but not cold. What did I blow up? ha...Thanks
cinda myers did you change your filter? Don’t see why thermostat would cause air temp to change. Hope you got it figured out definitely get a new filter if you haven’t.

I can't change the temp in my thermostat. It's on default mode. What should I do?

The homeowner called and said the house was cool before leaving to go to work. Upon returning from work, the house was hot. What is the problem and what action needs to be taken to correct the proble?
My thermostat is blinking and says Auto change deadband differential emergency and won’t turn on the heat/AC do you have any idea what this may be?
Extremely thorough overview of common thermostat problems. As usual, very clear and concise with no unnecessary fluff. Many thanks Craig, and keep up the great work. Much appreciated!
Thanks a lot Ma Ma!
@@acservicetechchannel Ma Ma??? Who's yo Daddy? Yea, Yea, Yea...
Such an understanding video for someone like me with a short attention span. I'm curious about heating system
Craig your videos just get better and better. Keep up the stellar work!
Thanks a lot David!
Thank you .. I fix my ac following you tips
The wire were strip back to far ( old owner ) my heat and cold were going on at the same time thanks you
Thanks!
Very good video, thermostat is the last thing we consider on troubleshooting, most of time
It just depends on if the problem is intermittent or if the system is broke, thanks!
Great video for tstat trouble shooting. Lots of problems to choose from. Easy way to out rule tstat is jump it out, but then again you can have a short too.
Yeah absolutely and intermittent problems too, thanks!
Ray Ray, I thought u might help me that’s exactly what happened to me I jump my thermosthat with a paperclip , ( I was trying to fix a not start heater) now the AC IS NOT working too. Any tip on which part got shorted ? I just want to fix the AC rite now
Start with the breakers and work your way through the process. My guess is the 5amp fuse blew or the transformer shorted
Best video I’ve seen on thermostat issues!!! 👏🏼
Excellent Explanation about thermostat... Professional and Didactic causes of problems in different thermostats. Thank you
Wow hard core stuff. Very educational! I have nothing to do electricity but learned a lot from this clear and detailed video. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
You’re the best I have on UA-cam.
I am glad to help! Thank you very much Michael!
OR it could just be that your condensation pipe is plugged up like mine was.
Sucked it out with a shop vac and reset the switch.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate your comments Joseph!
Thanks a lot. My furnace stopped working altogether and it was because of a malfunctioning thermostat which caused by one of the AA batteries leaking. Thanks again.
I love watching this guy, I've learned so much. Thank You!!!

we have a fairly large AC unit ( has a 24 volt start connector ) outside that runs on Natural gas with a sort of standard forced air heater, When replacing the wall thermostat do i need to get a special amperage rating? What is the difference between a heat pump and an air ( cooler ) conditioner ? Thank you
When I jump red and green wire I get the unit to turn on.. after installing the thermostat cover the unit would run a operate to correct temperature, but would not come back on until I jump the red & green again.. why is that?
Okay around 7:45 you stated that the heat pump thermostat could power the "y" Terminal in heat mode, if you don't mind, could you explain that, please
y powers the compressor which is needed to circulate the refrigerant during heating mode, thanks!
Question- could control board in thermostat just be bad? I left old mount board and plugged in new front case and it turned right on...
Just had my thermostat shut down due the float in the Unit shut it off. The condensation pipe was clogged up.
The float shuts off the 24 volt.
😱 omg i this is the first time that I see you in one of your videos!!! I think is the first time ever! Lol

I am not impressed with the warranty company
Thanks for your advise.
I want control of the temp. I hate smart thermostats!
I changed the batteries and reset it clicks, but the AC or heater do not respond. Any reason why
You are excellent! Very good presentation, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
My furnace wouldn't turn on, and I realized that the problem started after I had changed the thermostat batteries. Checked the thermostat wiring and thought that the excess dielectric grease that was on the male and female terminals was causing a problem, then realized that because of the awkward location where the thermostat
was mounted, that the display portion of the thermostat hadn't fully seated all the pins.
When I set the thermostat to 85 all night and by morning it stuck on 76, what could be the problem? Thanks
Very very helpful video👍 thanks
So do you think if you have a bad thermostat or connections are bad. Would that make the fan run after heat goes off
Sir , I have been auto mechanic since 1975 after my stroke can not work on R&R trans or engine .
which book you recomend to learn
about furnace .I thank you for your response 👌🙏 🫵 🫶 your videos .
What if my thermostat wont read 24v but i can read 24v on the control board? My thermostat is also blank. Could it be the control board not sending power to thermostat.
You should have 24v between the r and the c at the thermostat if you do have a c wire there, thanks!
Red cable was loose. I moved to the r/c and it works now 😇
Hello there ,
My air condition unit at my condo doesn’t cool the apartment below 24 Celsius ,
What could be a problem ?
Thank you for your answer
Air flow with vent last month all where working noticed filter where clogged changes and now noticed only half the vent are letting air out into rooms
Thank you for your video. My couch (Love Seat) is blocking the "return grill," would it cause the air-flow?
I have a C wire. But my new thermostat does not have a c junction. What are my options please.
Great video sr is great information about the thermostats
Thanks a lot Jose!
wow! that was an Excellent Video! thank you for sharing!.
Glad to help Jimbola77!
When I switch the thermostat to cool the burner egnite the heat comes on why is that happening
Hi there. My AC on my Hunter AC keeps switching to 82 even though I switch it down on the temperature. Could you help please?
Please help, as my HVAC contractor has been unable to address the issues so far. Below are the units which have been purchased and installed in my residence. The installers have spent days re-wiring my Nest thermostats and they still appear to not function properly. Can you provide assistance? Can you provide a definite answer that 3rd Generation Nest should/will work with the below devices? If not, why not and which SMART thermostats will work? I have seen my neighbors with brand new and modern Carrier and Goodman systems which do not have any issues with Nest Gen3.
Thank you,
Can you move the thermostat away from an exterior wall?
All of a sudden turning on my central cooling causes the heat to turn on, blowing hot air over 95 degrees. I'm hoping this will be nothing but a thermostat change but how can I tell?
Thanks great video
Glad you enjoyed it
If the wires are not connected correctly will the thermostat light up from the battery?
On problem number 3, what can happen if you have a c terminal wire with voltage and batteries in the thermostat?
BRILLIANT!

Dealing w/ an older furnace that has older thermostat like the one in your vid...The unit won't turn off even in the off position...Have to shut it off completely & back on, so as not to run up the electric bill...Could this also be a wire disconnected?..Great vid...

My heat was running and not shutting off with old mercury thermostat so I replaced it with a honeywell programmable one. It worked perfectly for a week, but made clicking sound when heat would come on. Now heat is running without cutting off again. While on it will blow hot air then cold air without shutting off.
