Your right, I am getting a $20k tray, $10k canopy, $6k roof top, $8k rear diff & the locker $3.5k $13k fitted. I've gone over $25k on the ute already. $4k gear box, $3k fuel tanks $1200.00 clutch. Single, no kids, ties. Going for it while I can. Once in a life time.
Have you ever seen a hilux run into the ground and become unusable? I am yet to see it. In Africa they have 20-30 year old hiluxes still running in absolutely HORRENDOUS condition (due to not being maintained properly and abused like hell).
Nice truck, but for most people a stock 70 series is really all you need. Add some minor mods and you have a very capable touring vehicle. At this point you need to get out of the 4WD aftermarket retailers and into the bush..
I looked at the situation in 2019 ( even more true post Covid in 2024), on a per year ownership cost for just the vehicle, you are either on par or better off than buying a second hand of all the popular Toyota 4wd. Check out the secondhand prices (redbook) and work out a 10 year ownership cost or say 200-250k ownership cost. So if you have cash to buy new, buy new, and know that mechanically it would fine for many years and someone else hasn’t butchered the car… it’s really a case of poor man pays more…😢 good channel - way more objective and none of the confirmation bias than other many other youtubers
I bought a 200 series GLX which I ordered in November 2020 and picked up in January 2021. I was offered $10,000 more when I picked it up to leave it. The prices are nuts second hand and I made the same decision as you that buying second hand made now sense because the depreciation is so low on Toyotas at the moment. No regrets from my end either.
Yes 100% great vid and info. Any Toyota 4x4 holds its value. We ordered a new 200 July 20 and collected Dec 20 and with COVID delays only got the basics done up to now! Would I do again - no! GVM+ has increased $6k in 18 months and 3 month wait to book in and it is never ending in what you need and spend to do to do some serious off road with all cars Toyota/Née-sun/Isuzu etc.
Just drove mine for the first time love it Its a truck and a truck is what i wanted Comfort is ok coming from landrovers 90s and 110 defenders this thing is what landrover should have been My old 72 series 2a was an absaltue shit box but still got me everywear and i never had issues parking ha ha ha My 2018 Hilux sr5 on the other hand got scratched dented and betean up all day still ran and no issues but more of a car the identified as a ute kind of the modern generation Me on the otherhand iam a 70s child i know what i am and know what i want and know were i want to go The LC79 GXL fits perfect for me
Well done mate!! I really like the colour you chose but Iam wandering if this colour is any good for bush scratches?I would really apreciate your help. Thanks and all the best in your future adventures.
Solid build mate. As silly as it sounds you’re right 100k touring build for a 79 is cheap. Any chance you could revisit/edit the interest rate part though?.. Since you made this video the rates have been going up 1/2 a % a month with no sign of slowing down lol
G day Try j car for proxy sensors on the canopy doors and an alarm I’ve ripped one off myself and fitted them strait away with an alarm on ignition Also first mod I did was low level water sensor in radiator Factory gauge is easily missed when driving
@@SmartTouringSystems I had an aftermarket clutch installed by the dealer after the 2nd clutch died at 40000kms.. I paid for the clutch, a flywheel skim and they did the labor side. I agreed to void my clutch warranty from there on. The 79 went in with a selectable tuning module in the cab, under the bonnet, heaps of other extras lifted, gauges ect. It’s stood out like dogs balls it was tuned and they never said a word. It does happen. If the worst happens, stand your ground. The way the law reads it’s up to them to prove that the tune caused a failure if you’re willing to go down that road. Sometimes time is an issue and they know that so they have you screwed but yeah moral of the story is it’s not always a bad result just cause your car is tuned an it certainly doesn’t void full warranty on the entire car.
The only negative I have is that I couldn't understand everything he was saying. I speak fluent english but the regional accent was hard to understand at times. Otherwise a great, informative video. Thanks
Depreciation on just about any Toyota is pretty well non existent. The 79 may be pretty basic, but boy are they as tough as. No other 4x4 comes even close .
Just about any 4x4 sells at a premium ATM. It's due to supply constraints and cheap money. Heck even Land Rovers sell for twice what they were getting 3 years ago. Ask me..our 2014 D4SC cost me 31k. They sell for up to 80k now. If interest rates go high then maybe the value will crash? Anyhow it's good for those who bought cheap years ago.
Could you please explain how it is legal or acceptable for the rear tracks not to be the same? Surely Toyota must fit this. Could wheel spacers on the rear be an easier and cheaper fix? Or if they are illegal, rims with different offset??
@@dribblin_crap I did 90,000 hard kms on good quality wheel spacers without drama. Not saying they’re the best option but back then they were one of the only options.
If you can afford one why would you sale it, I know one guy who has clocked up 750 thousand kms and it still drives like new, great info about the cost, look after it, who did the heavy duty clutch for you ? I'm doing one soon cheers 🍻 👏
Yup people sook about the price and claim x/y or z is better, sure some are better for certain tasks but NOTHING will put the k's down like 70 series, ive driven one with around 500k and it felt same as a new one and had nothing but normal consumables in those 500,000k's, still on factory clutch even!
Watch depreciation kick in when interest rates go up, credit tightens and diesel prices remain high. Wouldn’t buy a new car now especially a 4x4. Wait for the fire sale
I don’t think that is true for the 79. Apart from a Ranger I have sold sold every car I have owned for more than my purchase price over the past $20 years The only thing better than Toyota tax is td42 tax. The 70 series is as safe as houses.
I understand the car is not for everyone but it is so much fun to drive it in the bush. You must love it before you buy it. Obviously, you don't, and that is fine, you must be a Ford guy.

Plus for me that’s all a tax wrote off 💯
Really appreciate this kind of video. nobody likes to do a proper price breakdown. love the honesty mate
Great feedback and advice
You see the hilux, navara and rangers going for $70,000 and won’t last nearly as long or tow as well. Enjoy 😉

Very good summary of information that a lot of people don't think about up front. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!

Thanks for tuning in mate.
What a great video on the cost of the 79. Thanks for sharing and your honesty too. Well done mate keep it up. 🤙🏻
Agree with your analysis
Upgrading any 4wd is about the same across the board
$97000 drive away now for a duel cab GXL. Order books seem to have re-opened.

yes the sensors would be a great addition. definitely was a bad day when I ripped the door off. haha
Hey mate, great video. One question, with all the upgrades to the clutch/ chipping etc, how does this affect the Toyota warranty?
Thanks very much
every chance I would say.

Deft go with -55 offset rims on rear. Never use spacers they'll stuff ya bearings real quick
