    Most people unfortunately don’t understand that you can travel in an older car and on a smaller budget.
    I’d love for you guys to do a price rundown on the old Hilux and new cruiser once completed!

    Excellent video Matt. as with many others here, can't help but appreciate your honesty. loving this build series. Personally I'd do it a little bit differently, but that is the beauty of it really. We all do things differently, but end up with the same result of being out doors. Keep bringing out these great videos, with your open honesty.

    Top video Matt, love or hate the build you’re doing, your information and ideas are free and people can take it or leave it. Go into any car, camping, caravanning or 4wd shop, they’ll tell you their products are the best while edging you up to the next price bracket. Are salespeople more genuine and transparent than UA-camrs?
    Be great to see her dirty and dusty on a great big hill or in a deep valley.

    A lot of people forget the costs of failure. If your 4wd has a significant breakdown in remote areas, it can be very expensive and time consuming to get it fixed.
    I had my front drivers wheel bearing fail on my GU patrol due to worn radius arm bushes. Whilst I knew the issue, I didn't know the full extend of the damage prior to disassembly and with the added fact of holiday peak periods, I had no choice but to fly home and truck the Patrol back home after it was fixed.
    With a brand new build, you are mitigating a lot of these serious mechanical issues older vehicle could experience.

    Given the time you spent on explaining your position on sponsorship, it’s certainly clear that you appreciate the decisive nature of the subject. Disclosing what you got kick backs on and what you did not was the right thing to do, thank you. What would be interesting to know is if you would have still bought a high dollar product if the manufacturer did not come to the party. Using your seats as an example, you love them, I get it. If you had to pay for the full 35K (so far) on your build, would you have peeled 6K out of your back pocket given a finite budget? That way someone doing the same thing as you can get to understand your priorities items because they are all purchased...if I’m making sense. I’m a firm believer of the moto, “Who’s bread I eat, who’s song I sing”. Having said that, your disclosures certainly allow people to make up their own minds where a lack of disclosure is deceit by proxy, so thanks for that. Jill and I are doing the Canning solo in the opposite direction to you around the same time so we might bump into you guys along the way. Regardless, have an amazing trip from Jafffa Adventures😎👍

      I have similar sentiments. IMO, once a channel is sponsored by a brand, the recipient(s) will find it hard to talk negatively about the sponsor's product(s). And 100% impartiality goes out the window. I also frequently hear from UA-camrs that the brands they are sponsored by are brands they really like, and thus why they (brands) were asked to be involved in their channel. Then giving this very reason as the justification why they (recipients) always provide positive reviews about their sponsor's products. What would be interesting to know, for a full disclosure by the channel, is if they've asked other brands first to sponsor them before the brand, they eventually end up working with did. For instance, was Falken their first choice for tyres? Or did they ask other tyre brands first, but those brands declined? Anyway, good work on them in finding sponsors.

    • @OverlandTravellers
      @OverlandTravellers  Рік тому +1

      Hey mate great comment and something I have personally thought about, "What would we be putting on if we didn't have these opportunities?". You mentioned a finite budget, if that was the case then we certainly wouldn't be putting all this gear on, we would stick to the budget. But if we were in a position to do it then absolutely we would. In the case of the seats if I was building an old 1HZ troopy I would definitely find 3K for at least the drivers seat. It all comes down to a "what if" situation, what if we didn't have the channel? Who knows we might have had more time to put into our business and we could be better off. It actually could be a really cool video to do, have a range of builds from 20k, 50K, 100K, 150K and 200K and go through what I would get and put on it. Also I defiantly have a bias for the gear thats on the car, but hopefully by telling people what we have got and what we haven't they can cross reference information from other sources and make informed decisions. Defiantly say hello if we see you on the Canning! cheers

    Should have spoken to 4x4 Overlander - Andrew is an expert in builds and has done many variations.
    We have our 2020 VX 80% done as a tourer and has cost us $150k with purchase of new vehicle (95k) with suspension and GVM+ being the most costly single outlay. $20k. The Falkens are fantastic, we kept the 285 as the +35 offset on the rims keep them legal, and anything bigger requires guard flares.

    Hi Matt. Usuful video thanks. Do you have any thoughts on the effects of adding the larger tyres on the performance of the vehicle? I have been looking at larger tyres for my own cruiser and am a little concerned about the impact on effective low range gearing, braking, engine braking and fuel economy. Some people after fitting 35s (or even 33s) modify the brakes, the clutch and even the gearing to compensate. Could add substantially to the cost if you wanted to get back where you started with the original tyre size. I see you have upgraded the clutch - any plans on looking at other related changes?

My issue with ScheelMann has been quality, less than zero customer service, then the definition of abusive. For the money you don’t get an install either. And so you’d think it’s sorted considering? I didn’t even get instructions, and when I did they are lacking in the info needed, didn’t even get enough mounting hardware. Seat still isn’t level I suspect.
      Counting the 10s of hours and faulty seats, and $400 in postage you pay for a problem, im just putting it out there for others ….
      … in the fj40 it was a paid promo?
      Compared to recaro and others who have dealer network and support, they are way too $$ for total lack of support.
      It’s not the best solution for people. It’s actually the worst.
      Solid seat and supportive - 100%
      Defiantly not suitable for a 76
      I love my SC so much I haven’t installed my 2nd one sitting in the garage in the past 18 months.
      I only wondered if you’d lived with others to state what you did. Which it seems not. It’s misleading and dishonest.
      Happy travels in UA-cam.

    Hi Matt, interested to know if you're considering sound deadener and insulation, i've still got a bit to go with my build but so far it's one of the best things i've done, I've had dual cab Hiluxs for the last 20 years and when i got my troop i found it noisy and drummy, but now it's so quiet and comfortable, feels like a whole new vehicle, you're probably used to a bit of noise and rattle from your previous vehicle so you probably don't notice it like I did, also why did u get yours tuned in Sth Oz when you had your other work done here in NSW, are there no good tuners up here, I haven't had mine tuned yet,

    Nicely done Matty, You've come a long way from the old farty exhaust Luxxy. The costs of a build add up pretty easy once you look at so many different things. Currently building up my BT50 - AWKWD into a touring and offroader. Not a huge amount left to be done to it other than a GVM upgrade later on and a few engine mods to help keep it more reliable and with lower temps.

    Here's the thing about sponsored gear - if you're gonna take your vehicle into the outback of the outback then you aren't gonna put inferior stuff on "just because" you got it for free. You are depending on that gear to be the very best and to do its job - no matter what it might or might not have cost you. Clever idea to get the same tyres as Adrian - a friend who has run out of spare tyres but has another friend with a spare is a friend indeed. Lolz.

    Hi Matt. I’m keen to get your thoughts on any concerns you may have had when you got your engine tune done as far as the new vehicle warranty goes.
    I’ve got a 2022 Prado with a 3.5T GVM upgrade and tow a 15ft hybrid (eventually to do the lap with my family) and would like to get the engine tuned specifically for towing if not for most probably voiding the warranty in the event of a claim.
    Obviously, you’ve gone ahead with your tune regardless but are you at all concerned about possible warranty claims in the future?

    • @OverlandTravellers
      @OverlandTravellers  Рік тому

      At the end of the day it's completely up to you. For myself personally I wouldn't tune a Prado as those engines are quite highly strung from factory, where as the VDJ can be tuned quite safely to a point. I am personally not too concerned, if something happens so be it.... But my warranty was on the rocks long before the tune with all the other mods.

The only thing I think I would change is the size of the tyres / rims and the lift is too much….. far to big for touring (put a can of coke on it that you do 3 tyres on the canning trip). …. I can understand why people like a Troopy…. Just to agricultural for my liking and there is better touring setups / platforms on the market for touring these days….. if your into more hard core out of the way places / climbing goat tracks and swimming rivers etc…. Then maybe the Troopy….. though to me …it really comes down to a Toyota badged (all Japanese type vehicles really ) are easier to find parts, aftermarket items, serviced or get repairs done, especially in our part of the world.

    Good for you that you've attracted some sponsorships and/or have gotten substantial discounts due to your channel. It takes a lot of effort to build a brand that companies want to be associated with. But while I know you guys will do your best to be as honest and transparent as you can be with the products get, once these products are provided to you for free, and/or given to you with a substantial discount, there will inevitably always some bias towards said products. Either not-disclosing minor issues experienced with the products down the road, or not mentioning some negative specs etc (ie. like how super heavy your RTT is etc). After all, you don't want to bite the hand that feeds you. Or in your case, alienate the companies that sponsor your channel. It's just the nature of doing business. It happens in other industries, and it also happens in social media. Looking forward to seeing the new RT conversion of your troopy.

    • @OverlandTravellers
      @OverlandTravellers  Рік тому

      Yes we defiantly have a bias for the gear on our car, mainly because I cant really comment on something I don't have. That being said there defiantly is an element of "they helped me ill help them", that doesn't mean I straight up lie to people. But yes by telling people what we have got sponsored they can then make a more informed decision and correlate information about said product with other sources. I have always been very vocal about the weight of our RTT and its limitations. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. Just the other day we decided to change out mind on an accessory that we got for free and opted to pay for one instead at about a 2K cost to us. We also turned down about 15K worth or]f gear and paid for the majority of the stuff we actually wanted. As I said in the video we genuinely want to give good advice to the people we owe all this to. Cheers for watching and commenting as always mate.

    $140-$160k is very reasonable. I did some similar cost estimates on a build and it topped $200k, but I was looking at full Jmax & an Auto conversion (because I’m an old man 😂 ). Once you start getting into the nitty gritty and taking out any sponsorship etc, there’s not a chance in hell you’ll get it done for $140k unless you skimp in quality and do the complete fit out yourself.
    My project went on the back burner due to health issues & now Toyota has well and truely screwed it up. I blame all these dopes that think driving coal & gas powered electric vehicles actually think that they are into something good and as a result of all the numpty govts and car manufacturers trying to respond we now have a semi- conductor crisis and good vehicles like 78 series have been put on the back burner to build these shit electric soft dick options that are filtering into our streets.

Look at the cost of a good horse float, it’s $30-50k sans horse & all other bits you need, an off road racing buggy is $150k if you want to be competitive, a wake setter ski boat is $250k as examples. If people want to pursue their hobbies & spend their coin on it good on them. I priced up both a V6 Ranger & a 300 series LC with GVM upgrades & the same touring spec as our 76 series and they both work out to be $140k (and neither of them are top spec models). Let's say king or superior suspension, plus the track correction and either portals or coils etc, then the Alucab conversion, then the inside build, then if you wan the best - Safiery custom build electrical - totally electric/solar off grid setup, then a Rainman portable desalination setup ( so pure water from any source), then the auto upgrade from wholesale automatics etc.....it goes on.... easily $200k.
