We don't really view Maryland as much of a rival, and Michigan State has been our most competitive "rivalry" without really feeling like much of one. Another reason MSU and UofM hate eachother is that when MSU was still in its infancy Michigan wanted to buy out The Michigan Agricultural College and make it a subsidiary branch of the University of Michigan. (Similar to how there is a University of Michigan Flint, college) If the governor at the time never Vetoed the decision MSU wouldn’t exist. Also When the MAC wanted to legally change its title to Michigan State University. Michigan tried to veto the decision claiming it would make the colleges loop similarly and that “students would get confused” Michigan State has a long list of reasons other than sports to hate the university of Michigan. Nebraska - Minnesota? My sister who bleeds maroon and gold only cares about Wisconsin and Iowa. Wisconsin for similarity and Iowa for all the Iowans that invade the TC for jobs. As a Northwestern alumnus I agree with your ranking. It has gotten better since we actually started playing football again in the mid-90s. Our secondary and tertiary rivals are Iowa and Wisconsin as we have an even record over the last 30 years with both of them. No trophy however. Our only other trophy other than the recent UofM one is with ND although the physical trophy is lost.

I say this not as a Nebraska or Iowa fan, but another big ten school: I love the Iowa-Neb rivalry. I know it's new in terms of the conference, but it's one of my favorite games in the conference each season. Look forward to black friday every year just because of it. Maybe I'm alone in that regard.
Completely agree. Definitely S tier. It's a wonderful regional rivalry that's been played more than any other FBS rivalry with the record between the two teams being almost dead even(63-62-8)
Penn State and Ohio State is budding. There are increasing traditions, like the blackout/whiteout. I'd put it in C, personally. It's certainly Ohio State's second rival, but an insanely distant second.
I really disagree that it's a budding rivalry beyond general animus for perennially good conference foes. For example, blackout/whiteout isn't a rivalry tradition. OSU has done just as many blackouts for Wisconsin and Rutgers as they have for PSU and PSU's whiteouts aren't always against OSU either (e.g. it was against Iowa this year). While everyone is excited for what are usually good games, I don't see either side ever really take it personally. I went to OSU in the late 2000's/early 2010's when the teams were the most evenly matched and PSU was always circled with the same color marker as Wisconsin and MSU who were also just very good to elite conference foes. I think it would be higher if the results were more competitive, but OSU is 19-5 this century with the only loss that really stung being 2016 where OSU went to the playoffs anyways. For example, Illinois (who was ranked here as a D-tier rivalry but I think belongs in C or B-tier) has only beaten OSU 3 fewer times than PSU, with one of those wins (Juice Williams in 2007) still living rent-free in Buckeye minds.

Without Oregon State and Wazzu in their conference, the Oregon-Washington game is almost certainly going to get even more intense. It easily will be the second hottest football rivalry in the conference.

As a ducks fan, the Oregon Washington game is our real rivalry, the civil war with the beavers is more like just us beating the shit out of our little brother. I have a genuine hatred for UW though.
I personally think the history is what matters for the civil war season before last Osu was the only reason why we didn’t make it to the pac-12 championship
Maryland v.s Johns Hopkins is literally the biggest Lacrosse rivalry in the country and technically counts as Johns Hopkins joined with Maryland in the Big Ten in a similar situation to Notre Dame with Ice Hockey. I'd put that in A or even S tier.
Yeah I’m a little disappointed they took that game away from us. I always enjoyed the Neb-Minne games every year. Always a toss up. The Quadruple of hate needs to remain as a focal point in the B1G, just keep Wiscy, Minne, Iowa and Neb playing each other every year.
Putting the broken chair in S and putting the Battle for the Axe in A is insanity. The ‘Sota-Wisco rivalry is the longest running rivalry in college football. It might not get the same attention as The Game, but it is an incredibly important piece of college football history.
Minnesota/Wisconsin is absolutely the better rivalry, but I don't mind seeing Minnesota/Nebraska in the S tier simply because it's organic. It's not like the Big Ten offices decided that we're playing for a 10-foot plywood shelving unit with some bowling trophies on it. Iowa fan here. I hate Nebraska more than Minnesota and Wisconsin combined. Every year the game seems to come down to the last possession as well. Keith Duncan blowing a kiss to the Nebraska crowd after nailing the game winning kick will be talked about for decades. It doesn’t have the history of these other rivalries but I would give it a B or C

Penn Stater here. PSU-OSU is very underrated. We know we'll never be on the same level as OSU-Michigan, but it definitely matters. Our fanbase is getting restless over James Franklin's lack of success against OSU and Michigan. Might get much more heated if we can get over that hump and start getting some wins against them.
Buckeye here. The feeling isn't mutual. We always look forward to our game, but it's with the same energy as when we play any other highly ranked conference foe like Wisconsin or MSU. There's nothing personal or organic about this rivalry and it only even exists because we're B1G Corporate decreed it for TV ratings purposes. It's not just Franklin either, OSU is 19-5 against you this century and the only loss that stung was 2016 but we went to the playoffs anyways. Wisconsin-Minnesota almost gets into S-tier for the trophy alone. The fact it’s the longest running, most contested rivalry in D1 FBS history puts it over that limit by a mile.
It's not an official rivalry by the big ten but it's definitely one of my favorites even though we lose a lot. The Illinois-Iowa rivalry in football. We hate Iowa.
You didn't mention the Big Chill at the Big House. That was the hockey game played outside between Michigan and Michigan State. They played at the football stadium in Ann Arbor. It was one of the most watched hockey games ever.
in the years to come, look to see rivalry's develop between Oregon and OSU. Washington and Michigan. those 4 schools over the last 30 years have played each other quite a bit and all 4 schools hate each other. so it should develop quickly with them playing almost every year.
Oregon and OSU will definitely become a rivalry. Both have similar fans as well. Also Washington and USC both have kind of a long history with Michigan in all the rose bowl games they’ve played over the years.

Nah you're disrespecting Minnesota with this list. The Minnesota/Wisconsin rivalry is literally the oldest continuous college football rivalry in the FBS, period. Add in that both states also hate each other massively (in all sports, and just in general) and it has to be the #2 rivalry in the conference. Also ESPN themselves called the Floyd of Rosedale the best rivalry tophy in college athletics - that alone deserves an A tier. I could also grumble about putting Little Brown Jug in D tier, but that's less egregious than the other two. TL;DR we don't have much as a program but LET US HAVE OUR BOMB-ASS RIVALRIES GODDAMNIT
North Carolina-Duke, North Carolina-Wake Forest, and Miami(OH)-Cincinnati are older rivalries among current FBS schools, but Minnesota-Wisconsin might have the most games played?
We also have 7 (claimed) national championships and 18 B1G Championships both STILL rank 3rd in the conference! (Although USC will bump us to 4th in National Championships when they officially join) Let's not talk about what years they took place though.
Regarding the MSU- U of M rivalry. The all time record is quite misleading. For at least the first four decades of that rivalry , this was a warm up game for U of M. It was almost always the first game of the year , and almost always played in Ann Arbor. MSU during this time was a small agricultural and applied science school. Michigan was the dominant university in the Midwest. It was only in the late 40’s, when State greatly expanded their curriculum and enlarged their stadium , and sought out high tier coaches like Biggie Munn and Duffy Daugherty did they they compete on the same level as Michigan. A fair assessment of the all time record would start in 1948. Biggie Munn took over in East Lansing. 4 years later MSU would win a national championship. The Paul Bunyan Trophy would come around in 1953. Despite Michigan’s long battle to keep MSU out of The Big Ten, they finally became intra conference rivals officially in 1953. Since this era of the late 40’s and early 50’s, the rivalry has been relatively close with MSU owning a 14-4-2 advantage in the 50’s and 60’s. It swung back to Michigan in the 70’s 80’s with Bo, the 90’s and most of the oughts with Gary Moeller and Lloyd, Carr, the record being 30-9, in favor of U of M. However The Mark Dantonio era ensued for 12 years, not including his first year of 2007, that I have already given credit to Lloyd Carr for his final year at Michigan. That brought an 8-4 advantage over Rich Rod, and Brady Hoke, and Harbaugh’s first 5 years. Then we have Mel Tucker’s short reign and Harlan Barrett’s interim year vs Harbaugh’s last 4 years. This was a wash at 2-2. So, if you take the last 7 plus decades only, the all time rivalry stands at U of M 40, MSU 33 with two ties. This covers the time when both schools were large scale universities of similar size and gives a more accurate color to the rivalry.
As a Michigan State fan thank you for bringing up the fact UofM tried to keep MSU out of the big ten. The reason at the time highlighted was because the big ten had a ban on scholarships for athletes. And MSU had a dinner system where tickets sold at this state dinner would pay for certain players. That’s why MSU wouldn’t be officially admitted until 1953 when all the Dinner Party players graduated and this msu no longer had an “unfair advantage” over other Big Ten colleges.

Anyway, I DMed Will’s wife (Carissa), who is a native Kansan, K-State alumnus & fan; she said she’s never heard Nebraska fans referred to as Nubs. Oregon-Washington is below The Game but on par with Nebraska-Minnesota to me. The reason it doesn’t have a name or trophy is because until the last 30 years Washington dominated. I think S or A is fair though. USC-UCLA is at least B maybe C.

Rutgers historic rivals are Princeton, Lehigh and Lafayette in football and Seton Hall in basketball. The only school it has any history with in the Big 10 is State Penn, and that’s not a good history. If there are rivals, it’s Syracuse and UConn.
Growing up as an Iowa Fan, my dad taught my brother and I, hate a gopher and drink with a badger. I added, look down to a cyclone (Iowa State) and talk slowly to a cornhusker.

Wisconsin and Minnesota in hockey. 11 national championships between them in men's hockey (WI 6 MN 5) and 13 in women's hockey (WI 7 MN 6). They are the two schools with the most women's hockey championships.
As an OSU alum who attended before Michigan got good again ill say we cared almost as much about PSU as we did about the game. High B to low A tier I think.
So (as a Maryland fan) I will inform you that Terrapin Football is the third string sport behind Lacrosse and Basketball. The big rivalry in Lacrosse is against John Hopkins (which is part of the reason JH is a Big Ten Lacrosse afiliate) which is sometimes considered the greatest rivalry of the sport. In Football, Maryland's biggest rival is Virginia, those games get testy and IIRC they've played every year since Maryland left the ACC. The Crab Bowl Classic against Navy is probably the one with the most anamosity but it hasn't been played in a while. Maryland's biggest Big 10 rival is probably Rutgers. The two have traded absolutely emberassing losses since they both joined The Big Ten and even played Rivalry Week last season. I see some online calling it "A Game" as sort of a jokey nickname. It could really develop into a strong rivalry over time as both programs are on the up and close by.
The biggest thing I think you missed are some of the Big Ten's hockey rivalries are actually very entertaining. Minnesota Wisconsin last weekend is proof of that. Michigan vs. Michigan St. with the duel in the D. Minnesota Michigan has been a great hockey matchup lately, though Minnesota has more out of conference rivals in hockey. Also Notre Dame is an in-conference rival for Michigan in hockey. It's not the biggest sport but it definitely matters to the players.

The only one I don't understand (where you ranked it) was Nebraska/Minnesota. I think EVERY one of your "A" tier rivalries should be ahead of it. Also, this is definitely based on the football games. If you gave, at least, equal importance to the basketball aspect of the rivalry, Purdue/IU would be in whatever is the next one up from "S"!
As a Nebraska fan, Iowa and Wisconsin to me are our only true rivals in-conference. The younger generations might think Minnesota is big but to me it's just another conference game. Still think Colorado and Oklahoma are still rivalry games to us than our Big Ten ones.

The next time Michigan had the same officiating crew as the one on duty for the famous "trouble with the snap" game, M was playing W. M lined up to punt and W was called for a penalty I didn't know existed until that moment, "rouging the snapper, 15 yards, automatic first down" I think this shows those referees were scolded in private later that it wasn't called on the last play of that game. If you re-watch, 3 MSU players all run in to the long-snapper, they don't give him 1 second after the snap and they knocked him tumbling head over heels over backward, they even affected the ball trajectory, which was the whole problem.
Remember when the Western Athletic Conference went to 16 in 1996 and lost HALF of them in 1999? That was due to rivalry mishandling. The Big "18" better be careful, or else they'll be the new WAC! Adding the Pac traitors will hurt LONG TERM! Oregon football got lucky with the jetlag this year (Purdue being garbage, Michigan and Wisconsin being average with the weather being descent those days, and especially having fellow traitor UCLA on the road), but won't be so lucky next year with this schedule: @Northwestern (should win this one) @Penn State (better hope they don't show up like in the 2024 neutral site game) @Rutgers (lose to them, and they'll be a laughing stock) @Iowa (better hope they are mediocre in order to win this one, especially if the weather is bad) @Washington (fellow Pac traitor, so no jetlag there, but Washington will fight back hard) Remember, football is a BRUTAL game, so jetlag is still a big deal there too. The remaining sports will cripple the Pac traitors with the constant jetlag! For yearly rivalries, two to three should suffice. At nine conference games, it would take 5 years for home and home against the remaining 14 to 15 teams. Now for the rivalries: Oregon vs. UCLA vs. Washington vs. USC Iowa vs. Wisconsin vs. Nebraska vs. Minnesota Northwestern vs. Indiana vs. Illinois vs. Purdue Michigan State vs. Ohio State vs. Michigan Rutgers vs. Penn State vs. Maryland For the last six, three from one group would be guaranteed a game every year against a team from the other three-way rivalry group. This made me realize how mid most of the BIG 10 rivalries are. You’ve got classics like The Game and Minnesota-Wisconsin, but most of the others feel like a stretch. Like I doubt any casual college football fan gives a shit about half of these “rivalries”.
I know this is late but I will still give some info as a younger Penn State fan. Ohio State is just a competitive game and I only hate them because they are one of our two usual losses each year, but if we were a 7-6 team every year, I probably wouldn’t care. For Maryland it’s not a rivalry, and at least to me as a Penn State fan, the game just makes me feel better when they are good and we lose to Ohio State or Michigan.
You should definitely do an SEC rivalry tier list soon! So many great rivalries: Iron Bowl, UGA vs Florida, Egg Bowl, along with a bunch of incoming rivalries such as Texas-Oklahoma, Texas vs A&M, etc.
as per UM MSU, part of what makes it big is nt just that they are huge rivals in both sports, but they are only 40-45 minutes away from each other. and that a huge chunk of people that are fans grew up together
As a Spartan fan you pretty much nailed this tier-list except I would change one thing and add another: Change: I would move the the Umich/MSU rivalry up to S-tier because no matter how good or bad a team is doing that year, the games and atmosphere are always top-notch and the week leading up to the game is labeled as "hate week" while also having lasting iconic moments from these games whether its basketball or football. Very much a top-tier rivalry. Add: Even though it's not listed as an official rivalry matchup nor have a trophy for the game, the MSU/OSU matchup is a pretty big rivalry because its part of the triangle of hate between MSU/OSU/and Umich just because its the state of Michigan vs. Ohio. I would put this as a high B/low A tier.
Heartland Trophy should be higher than Floyd of Rosedale. Wisc-Iowa is a true rivalry of respect. Heroes game sucks though. Can’t talk to a Nebraska fan without getting a lesson on ancient history.
As a Ducks fan we always knew the game between Oregon and washington as the border war. And i think i can speak for Ducks fans and say the hatred runs very deep between these teams.

The only thing I could think of is Nebraska V. Colorado which was a big rivalry before Nebraska joined the big 10. But with Colorado recently rising again in prominence the rivalry is starting to spark back up.
Genuinely wish Maryland and Rutgers would go to the ACC. They’ve never been a good fit and now with the west coast teams joining they’re just going to get buried even further down. If they joined the ACC they could have a chance at being competitive
Putting the Jug game that low is a disservice to how that rivalry is on ice, as there’s a lot of history there and it’s heated up again in the last couple years too. Should bump it up to C tier at least.
I would like them to change the name to the Pacific Standoff, but for us the rival game is officially called the Cascadia Clash with the Huskies, and we have a loving endearing name of the Fuskies whenever its Fuskies hate week, genuinely felt so good throwing 49-21 on them

I say this not as a Nebraska or Iowa fan, but another big ten school: I love the Iowa-Neb rivalry. I know it's new in terms of the conference, but it's one of my favorite games in the conference each season. Look forward to black friday every year just because of it. Maybe I'm alone in that regard.

Penn State and Ohio State is budding. There are increasing traditions, like the blackout/whiteout. I'd put it in C, personally. It's certainly Ohio State's second rival, but an insanely distant second.
Quickly becoming my 2nd favorite game of the year, more often than not more entertaining than the Big 10 championship game
I really disagree that it's a budding rivalry beyond general animus for perennially good conference foes. For example, blackout/whiteout isn't a rivalry tradition. OSU has done just as many blackouts for Wisconsin and Rutgers as they have for PSU and PSU's whiteouts aren't always against OSU either (e.g. it was against Iowa this year). While everyone is excited for what are usually good games, I don't see either side ever really take it personally. I went to OSU in the late 2000's/early 2010's when the teams were the most evenly matched and PSU was always circled with the same color marker as Wisconsin and MSU who were also just very good to elite conference foes.
I think it would be higher if the results were more competitive, but OSU is 19-5 this century with the only loss that really stung being 2016 where OSU went to the playoffs anyways. For example, Illinois (who was ranked here as a D-tier rivalry but I think belongs in C or B-tier) has only beaten OSU 3 fewer times than PSU, with one of those wins (Juice Williams in 2007) still living rent-free in Buckeye minds.
From my uninformed perspective it's a massive game for Penn State and just another game for OSU

As a ducks fan, the Oregon Washington game is our real rivalry, the civil war with the beavers is more like just us beating the shit out of our little brother. I have a genuine hatred for UW though.

Maryland v.s Johns Hopkins is literally the biggest Lacrosse rivalry in the country and technically counts as Johns Hopkins joined with Maryland in the Big Ten in a similar situation to Notre Dame with Ice Hockey. I'd put that in A or even S tier.

Yeah I’m a little disappointed they took that game away from us. I always enjoyed the Neb-Minne games every year. Always a toss up. The Quadruple of hate needs to remain as a focal point in the B1G, just keep Wiscy, Minne, Iowa and Neb playing each other every year.
Putting the broken chair in S and putting the Battle for the Axe in A is insanity. The ‘Sota-Wisco rivalry is the longest running rivalry in college football. It might not get the same attention as The Game, but it is an incredibly important piece of college football history.
Minnesota/Wisconsin is absolutely the better rivalry, but I don't mind seeing Minnesota/Nebraska in the S tier simply because it's organic. It's not like the Big Ten offices decided that we're playing for a 10-foot plywood shelving unit with some bowling trophies on it. I don't care that it started on Twitter between a mascot and a fake coach. It's silly, but dammit it's *OUR* silly.

Iowa fan here. I hate Nebraska more than Minnesota and Wisconsin combined. Every year the game seems to come down to the last possession as well. Keith Duncan blowing a kiss to the Nebraska crowd after nailing the game winning kick will be talked about for decades. It doesn’t have the history of these other rivalries but I would give it a B or C

Penn Stater here. PSU-OSU is very underrated. We know we'll never be on the same level as OSU-Michigan, but it definitely matters. Our fanbase is getting restless over James Franklin's lack of success against OSU and Michigan. Might get much more heated if we can get over that hump and start getting some wins against them.
Buckeye here. The feeling isn't mutual. We always look forward to our game, but it's with the same energy as when we play any other highly ranked conference foe like Wisconsin or MSU. There's nothing personal or organic about this rivalry and it only even exists because we're B1G Corporate decreed it for TV ratings purposes. It's not just Franklin either, OSU is 19-5 against you this century and the only loss that stung was 2016 but we went to the playoffs anyways. Even Illinois is only 3 wins behind Penn State and that 2007 Juice Williams game still lives rent-free in our heads!

Wisconsin-Minnesota almost gets into S-tier for the trophy alone. The fact it’s the longest running, most contested rivalry in D1 FBS history puts it over that limit by a mile.

You didn't mention the Big Chill at the Big House. That was the hockey game played outside between Michigan and Michigan State. They played at the football stadium in Ann Arbor. It was one of the most watched hockey games ever.

Oregon and OSU will definitely become a rivalry. Both have similar fans as well. Also Washington and USC both have kind of a long history with Michigan in all the rose bowl games they’ve played over the years.

Nah you're disrespecting Minnesota with this list. The Minnesota/Wisconsin rivalry is literally the oldest continuous college football rivalry in the FBS, period. Add in that both states also hate each other massively (in all sports, and just in general) and it has to be the #2 rivalry in the conference. Also ESPN themselves called the Floyd of Rosedale the best rivalry tophy in college athletics - that alone deserves an A tier. Regarding the MSU- U of M rivalry. The all time record is quite misleading. For at least the first four decades of that rivalry , this was a warm up game for U of M. It was almost always the first game of the year , and almost always played in Ann Arbor. MSU during this time was a small agricultural and applied science school. Michigan was the dominant university in the Midwest. It was only in the late 40’s, when State greatly expanded their curriculum and enlarged their stadium , and sought out high tier coaches like Biggie Munn and Duffy Daugherty did they they compete on the same level as Michigan. A fair assessment of the all time record would start in 1948. Biggie Munn took over in East Lansing. 4 years later MSU would win a national championship. The Paul Bunyan Trophy would come around in 1953. Despite Michigan’s long battle to keep MSU out of The Big Ten, they finally became intra conference rivals officially in 1953. Since this era of the late 40’s and early 50’s, the rivalry has been relatively close with MSU owning a 14-4-2 advantage in the 50’s and 60’s. It swung back to Michigan in the 70’s 80’s with Bo, the 90’s and most of the oughts with Gary Moeller and Lloyd, Carr, the record being 30-9, in favor of U of M. However The Mark Dantonio era ensued for 12 years, not including his first year of 2007, that I have already given credit to Lloyd Carr for his final year at Michigan. That brought an 8-4 advantage over Rich Rod, and Brady Hoke, and Harbaugh’s first 5 years. Then we have Mel Tucker’s short reign and Harlan Barrett’s interim year vs Harbaugh’s last 4 years. This was a wash at 2-2. So, if you take the last 7 plus decades only, the all time rivalry stands at U of M 40, MSU 33 with two ties. This covers the time when both schools were large scale universities of similar size and gives a more accurate color to the rivalry.

As a Michigan State fan thank you for bringing up the fact UofM tried to keep MSU out of the big ten. The reason at the time highlighted was because the big ten had a ban on scholarships for athletes. And MSU had a dinner system where tickets sold at this state dinner would pay for certain players. That’s why MSU wouldn’t be officially admitted until 1953 when all the Dinner Party players graduated and this msu no longer had an “unfair advantage” over other Big Ten colleges.

I believe I've mentioned before that because my in-laws are both native Nebraskans, my husband (Phillip) & my brother-in-law (Will) are both Husker fans, even though they're native Kansans; additionally, K-State beat Nebraska the first 3 years that Will was a student @ K-State (2002-2004); Nebraska finally won his Senior Year (2005). Anyway, I DMed Will’s wife (Carissa), who is a native Kansan, K-State alumnus & fan; she said she’s never heard Nebraska fans referred to as Nubs. That nickname must be specific to your family & not K-State fans in general.

Rutgers historic rivals are Princeton, Lehigh and Lafayette in football and Seton Hall in basketball. The only school it has any history with in the Big 10 is State Penn, and that’s not a good history. If there are rivals, it’s Syracuse and UConn.
Growing up as an Iowa Fan, my dad taught my brother and I, hate a gopher and drink with a badger. I added, look down to a cyclone (Iowa State) and talk slowly to a cornhusker.

Wisconsin and Minnesota in hockey. 11 national championships between them in men's hockey (WI 6 MN 5) and 13 in women's hockey (WI 7 MN 6). They are the two schools with the most women's hockey championships.

As an OSU alum who attended before Michigan got good again ill say we cared almost as much about PSU as we did about the game. High B to low A tier I think.
So (as a Maryland fan) I will inform you that Terrapin Football is the third string sport behind Lacrosse and Basketball. The big rivalry in Lacrosse is against John Hopkins (which is part of the reason JH is a Big Ten Lacrosse afiliate) which is sometimes considered the greatest rivalry of the sport.
In Football, Maryland's biggest rival is Virginia, those games get testy and IIRC they've played every year since Maryland left the ACC. The Crab Bowl Classic against Navy is probably the one with the most anamosity but it hasn't been played in a while.
Maryland's biggest Big 10 rival is probably Rutgers. The two have traded absolutely emberassing losses since they both joined The Big Ten and even played Rivalry Week last season. I see some online calling it "A Game" as sort of a jokey nickname. It could really develop into a strong rivalry over time as both programs are on the up and close by.

The biggest thing I think you missed are some of the Big Ten's hockey rivalries are actually very entertaining. Minnesota Wisconsin last weekend is proof of that. Michigan vs. Michigan St. with the duel in the D. Minnesota Michigan has been a great hockey matchup lately, though Minnesota has more out of conference rivals in hockey. Also Notre Dame is an in-conference rival for Michigan in hockey. It's not the biggest sport but it definitely matters to the players.

The only one I don't understand (where you ranked it) was Nebraska/Minnesota. I think EVERY one of your "A" tier rivalries should be ahead of it. Also, this is definitely based on the football games. As a Nebraska fan, Iowa and Wisconsin to me are our only true rivals in-conference. The younger generations might think Minnesota is big but to me it's just another conference game. Still think Colorado and Oklahoma are still rivalry games to us than our Big Ten ones.

The next time Michigan had the same officiating crew as the one on duty for the famous "trouble with the snap" game, M was playing W. M lined up to punt and W was called for a penalty I didn't know existed until that moment, "rouging the snapper, 15 yards, automatic first down" I think this shows those referees were scolded in private later that it wasn't called on the last play of that game. If you re-watch, 3 MSU players all run in to the long-snapper, they don't give him 1 second after the snap and they knocked him tumbling head over heels over backward, they even affected the ball trajectory, which was the whole problem.

For the last six, three from one group would be guaranteed a game every year against a team from the other three-way rivalry group. It would obviously rotate.

This made me realize how mid most of the BIG 10 rivalries are. You’ve got classics like The Game and Minnesota-Wisconsin, but most of the others feel like a stretch. Like I doubt any casual college football fan gives a shit about half of these “rivalries”.

The point of rivalries isn't for Joe Schmoe in Florida to care about Iowa/Nebraska, it's for THOSE fan bases to despise each other.
I know this is late but I will still give some info as a younger Penn State fan. Ohio State is just a competitive game and I only hate them because they are one of our two usual losses each year, but if we were a 7-6 team every year, I probably wouldn’t care. For Maryland it’s not a rivalry, and at least to me as a Penn State fan, the game just makes me feel better when they are good and we lose to Ohio State or Michigan.
You should definitely do an SEC rivalry tier list soon! So many great rivalries: Iron Bowl, UGA vs Florida, Egg Bowl, along with a bunch of incoming rivalries such as Texas-Oklahoma, Texas vs A&M, etc.

as per UM MSU, part of what makes it big is nt just that they are huge rivals in both sports, but they are only 40-45 minutes away from each other. and that a huge chunk of people that are fans grew up together
The Michigan-Minnesota rivalry is more of a hockey rivalry than anything but i guess you just ignored hockey
As a Spartan fan you pretty much nailed this tier-list except I would change one thing and add another:
Change: I would move the the Umich/MSU rivalry up to S-tier because no matter how good or bad a team is doing that year, the games and atmosphere are always top-notch and the week leading up to the game is labeled as "hate week" while also having lasting iconic moments from these games whether its basketball or football. Very much a top-tier rivalry.
Add: Even though it's not listed as an official rivalry matchup nor have a trophy for the game, the MSU/OSU matchup is a pretty big rivalry because its part of the triangle of hate between MSU/OSU/and Umich just because its the state of Michigan vs. Ohio. I would put this as a high B/low A tier.
I'm a Clemson fan in Minnesota, and while I don't have personal stake in it, the battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe is electric every year

The Floyd of Rosedale Trophy is a 100lb bronze pig. That alone makes Minnesota-Iowa S tier.
As a Ducks fan we always knew the game between Oregon and washington as the border war. And i think i can speak for Ducks fans and say the hatred runs very deep between these teams.
Michigan-Minnesota was played every year from 1919-98...It is Michigan's 3rd biggest rivalry
When the Big Ten said a team could have 3 protected rivalries, they should have protected Michigan-Minnesota, but FAILED
you should really do this for the SEC and ACC and maybe even big east. those would be very fun and would round out the power 4/5 conference rivalries.

UofM vs. MSU is S tier all the way.
The only thing I could think of is Nebraska V. Colorado which was a big rivalry before Nebraska joined the big 10. But with Colorado recently rising again in prominence the rivalry is starting to spark back up.

Genuinely wish Maryland and Rutgers would go to the ACC. They’ve never been a good fit and now with the west coast teams joining they’re just going to get buried even further down. If they joined the ACC they could have a chance at being competitive
Putting the Jug game that low is a disservice to how that rivalry is on ice, as there’s a lot of history there and it’s heated up again in the last couple years too. Should bump it up to C tier at least.
I would like them to change the name to the Pacific Standoff, but for us the rival game is officially called the Cascadia Clash with the Huskies, and we have a loving endearing name of the Fuskies whenever its Fuskies hate week, genuinely felt so good throwing 49-21 on them
