Interestingly enough what you understood from Wernher's side isn't the full story. See, he really doesn't care about the slaves. He doesn't care about the cure. All he cares about is himself. One of the developers behind A Tale of Two Wastelands confirmed this after scouring through FO3's dialogue as is required for the development of the mod, and found out interesting tidbits about his behavior. For the cues the VA was given for his dialogue, he needed to sound quite slimy, never really meaning what he meant. When talking about Marie, he just doesn't care about her well-being at all. He mentions things about how the cure extraction would go faster if the complainers didn't worry about harming "the little squirt", caring little about her well-being. He even says that once the cure has been extracted the slaves (which he still calls slaves despite the whole fighting for not being a slave) can take care of her, effectively turning Marie into a slave in the process. He doesn't even care about Midea, stating "You'd think an old slave like her would know how to work without raising a fuss, right?". This is not the marks of someone that fights for equality. Hell, the slaves mention how not much has changed when he became leader. In fact it's still the same old system of slavers telling slaves to do hard work, except now the leader has no prospects for the future. The real reason Wernher wanted Ashur gone is because he was kicked down a peg from the hierarchy and now wants revenge by killing his boss and asserting his "rightful" position on the throne of the Pitt instead of merely being second fiddle. He had no benevolent intentions to begin with.
With that in mind, this changes the premise of the Pitt's ending choices. You have Ashur: a man who has done a lot of bad and forced people to work in the Pitt as slaves, in the hopes of a better future for all its inhabitants and especially his daughter. He is no saint, but the Pitt wouldn't have civilization without him: just trogs lashing at anything that moves in one of the most barren hellscapes of the wasteland. On the other hand, you have Wernher: an opportunist who manipulates people so that he can have superiority over others, even as the smallest embers of what could potentially be civilization die out around him. Doesn't matter, he gets to lord over people as those said people's chances for a better life cease to be, fooled by the illusion that things might get better. Ashur somehow ends up technically being "the morally good choice" in all of this despite being a slaver, which kinda shows how messed up the Pitt is given that it's a place that's in such horrible conditions that no conventional good can help it become hospitable. That's the real magic of the Pitt, and combined with somehow making the dirty FO3 textures work thanks to lighting and being the Pitt, makes it the closest Bethesda got to making Fallout feel like Fallout should: imperfect human civilizations attempting to shape the future in a desolate land. Too bad they only had that spark for just that one moment before kinda being confused in which direction to take Point Lookout, then all the other DLCs.
Also Broken Steel kinda annoys me in the sense that it introduces the spongiest of the spongiest enemies to the base game, and they just flood the entire map by endgame. I swear if I have to fight another Albino Radscorpion or Super Mutant Overlord with DR ignoring flat damage tri-beams I will lose it. Actually I kinda did, hence why I really need to be bored to even boot up FO3 these days. Still beats playing Mothership Zeta with the whole war caused by aliens and the inertia fields. Oh those damn inertia fields.

    • @christianvondruska8244
      @christianvondruska8244 2 місяці тому +4

If anything though I think it's a good thing that the story-telling of the Pitt can be so up for interpretation. Fallout should have nuanced moral choices, again the fact that Ashur is the best choice but players can choose to side with Wernher is great, because it's so distinctly human. It's absolutely the wrong choice but the player is still allowed to make it regardless of if it's correct or not because not everything is meant to go right and well in the wasteland, there's not always going to be proper justice for "good" people. It's player freedom in the truest sense. Such a shame that it happens so rarely in Bethesda games

    • @Fartsmellahashsella
      @Fartsmellahashsella 24 дні тому

The bleakness of the Pitt makes a lot of sense if you know where Bethesda got their inspiration from. The story (as well as some of the weapons and armor you can get) are callbacks to "Escape from New York", where the main character is forced to help people that are barely better than the violent criminals he is pitted against

I cant remember who, but one of the outcasts who you speak to before entering the sim mentions that all the safety protocols are off, meaning if you die in the simulation you’ll go into cardiac arrest. This implies the simulation has safety protocols that were probably used by soldiers training for combat. Why they were turned off, however, escapes me.

    (Warning: Mucho texto)
General Jinwei is like Fallout 3's Legate Lanius. lol
I thought Operation Anchorage with a combat realism mod I found to be pretty enjoyable where everyone (Player included) die to 1-2 shots, kept the gunfights tense and avoided getting too stale. But yeah, vanilla game, it really drags on with how spongey the enemies are, though I'm certain you could get beefier weapons for taking out the Chimera tanks.
I'm with you on those Alien workers, aside from what we see what they've already done to the human captives on the ship, who knows what other Godforsaken things they've done to people in the past, I'm not letting any of them live, purge the alien! Gameplay wise I thought it was a bit more boring than Op Anchorage, but the gear was nice once the DLC was done.
I wish there would of been more RP options for Broken Steel, but I think the problem was making the game continue after the ending since they kill off/ write Autumn and Eden out of the story, and we don't have any other major characters in the Enclave, any new villain would feel out of the blue since they had no build up in the base game.
Loved Point Lookout, this was the DLC that felt like a true expansion pack like older games, and could easily have been it's own Fallout game if it were made like New Vegas was, using Fallout 3's assets and expanding on them. Also nice comparison with Harold and Calvert, never saw the similarities between the two like that.
One gun you forgot to mention that I loved from Point Lookout was the Perforator, I'd consider it easily the best assault rifle in the entire game if you enjoy playing stealthy. As far as the quest for the Pitt goes, while I hate slavery, keeping them in power does seem like the genuinely best option considering Asher's wife seems to be the only competent person who could feasibly cure the people of the Pitt of the mutations. And getting rid of them doesn't seem to actually liberate the slaves at all as they just keep working when all is said and done. I have to agree with you that the Pitt is probably one of the best expansions, really cool lore, too!
It's rather interesting how 3 of the DLCs do have some relations to the BOS in some way or another.
I have to admit I went into this video initially thinking you'd be like that one dude that made an 8 fucking hour long video of Fallout 3 response video and hating the game from top to bottom and not trying to see why some people might like the game and conveniently leaving out the DLCs in regards to the game as a whole, so I'm happily surprised your video wasn't that. I don't agree with all your points but I'm glad we have common ground in that there's enjoyable content in Fallout 3's DLC, and I will agree at the end of the day that your overall point of the video that this game's DLCs are indeed inconsistent. Great video, BcheezySon!

I am no Bethesda glazer but I have a certain Nostalgia for the game that 4 can't provide because I was actually entertained by the simple point and shoot gameplay, I hated how Broken Steel was simply only that, but Mothership Zeta had a interesting and kinda scary atmosphere, especially outside the ship, where it's only your breaths keeping you company as you watch the void. Operation Anchorage was my first Experience with fallout so I was hooked off the fact that there was a civil war with the group of a-holes that branched off because of a civil war.

Personally I'll always look at Fallout 3 through rose tinted glasses, it was my first RPG I played when I was 14 and it got me into the genre, it's definitely not the best RPG ever but I think with the context when it came out RPGs weren't selling the way action FPS games were and so Fallout 3 was definitely dilluted to try to capture two audiences. Fallout NV is definitely streets ahead of it but I understand why Fallout 3 was way more loose with it's RPG elements. Tried to be safe and target a wider audience and the best parts of Fallout suffered because of it in the end.

I don't think the hostile US soldiers was caused by your shenanigans in the camp. This happened to me once when I decided to fight Jingwei. Funny thing is they kept attacking me even after he was dead and General Chase had appeared. At a glance I'd figure it's a scripting or faction problem.
I also wouldn't put the whole KYS speech option down entirely to Fallout's US military having f-ed up ideas. Being defeated in combat by an enemy one considers to be inferior is pretty intolerable in many of those cultures. Granted it's not the same country but is a fellow communist dictatorship next door: North Korean SF troops actually offed themselves after an infiltration into the South rather than face capture.
Getting prodded in your own language by a Westerner is also a bit much for Jingwei here, (the Lone Wanderer apparently speaks Mandarin, which is why he/she understands Jingwei and can respond to him as well as knowing what the Chinese Remnants are saying).
Frankly the PRC in reality makes the Fallout US seem tame by comparison in terms of how they treat their own people and comport themselves militarily.

i was really weirded out by putting broken steel with other dlcs considering that it is the only dlc that you have to beat the game for first
oh and here's a funny thing - bethesda is so incompetent that no matter which difficulty you play on, majority of dlc enemies are bullet sponges
like those hillbilly inbreds in point lookout, albino radscorpions, feral ghoul reavers, supermutant overlords...
    just for "balance" i guess
operation anchorage is so painful, i know the main defense of the dlc but not even the most hardcore boot fucked soldier would program other soldiers to speak like that
the fact that bethesda thought it worthy of intelligence 6 to notice that simulation isn't real but not to actually be smart enough to mess with simulation is terrible
bethesda's terrible writing is even more visible here, you go to talk with GENERAL alone, like damn boy vaseline much?
and that over the top "diiiiiiiiiissmiiiiiiiiisssed!" it's not funny, it's not satire, it's terrible
literally entire dlc idea is full of call of duty and battlefield winks and nudges only they are terrible and everything that happens makes virtually and physically no sense
oh and the dlc lacks the option to be ultra smart character and just hack the shit out of the terminal to get the armor
which is funny because you can kill all the outcasts and do the simulation anyway but bethesda was never good at making anything so you can't willingly skip this masterfully crafted piece of gaming
also it's hilarious that bethesda not only has ruined the lore but also didn't fucking google it because how the fuck are soldiers supposed to be trained in simulation of battle of anchorage and succesfully beat china's ass WHEN THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN UNTIL JANUARY 2077 - so the same year bombs fell america has taken anchorage, deployed power armors to shut down riots AND get a fully blown training simulation about latest war to train it's soldiers, wow just wow
mothership zeta is something that should be either actual simulation or a theme park with robots and synths
outsde of tons of alien epoxy that repairs your weapon this dlc is completely worthless
broken steel is... the inactive purifier that was gathering dust for 200 years first builds up pressure and deadly radiation but somehow purifies entire water on the wasteland...
    what
point lookout is one quest of petty rivalry between a ghoul and a brain in a jar - you physically have no reason to help either other than being a greedy bastard and because quest marker said to go there
also that god awful quest for chinese spy which i am convinced was was set to fail because dumbass vault dweller can somehow break chinese encryption there's also no reason to do this quest and it's end is atrocious, china has build a gas chamber under ancient mansion without disturbing the ground just to kill one of their spies? and why is chinese intel recorded in english?
also also how does the computer know that you actually did your missions and why is it operational after 200 years
and then the only reason this dlc was created i'm sure - the unmarked at first quest with evil book that has to be taken to the most unusable location in capital wasteland - dunwich building
oh hey doesn't broken steel also force player to got here?
it's like they got complaints that this place was fucking useless so they decided to put 2 quests there
    the pitt is terrible
    >hey slave work or i'll beat your ass
    >holy crap slave you killed toughest raiders you are not a slave anymore
    >so friend now that you joined me and are not a slave anymore how about you get opportunity to backstab everyone
other than doing dlcs for weapons i don't see any actual value in them
they add nothing of substance and they provide absolutely no expansion for base game
broken steel is literally - "we know you hated the ending so here's 5 more quests that retcon the ending"
mothership zeta - every single alien movie cliche only from wish and i know that nobody ever comes back to the ship
point lookout - honestly there's way too many themes it's just stupid, evil book is evil
operation anchorage - we tried copying call of duty but don't even have a proper shooting mechanic

Speaking of CallOfDuty and fallout. Does anyone else hear ever think about the incredible missed opportunity of call of duty franchise crossover games? Like COD started running out of ideas when the future warfare era started and ever since then it’s been a struggle session with a couple partial exceptions. Imagine if you will that Activision had secured partnership deals with other properties similar to what they’ve been doing recently but with whole games. Imagine an entire CoD set in the Fallout universe during the last days of the resource wars with a massive nuclear war set peace in the middle and the later half of the game be several jank battles in the ravaged nuclear hell of a burning America that covers your transition from special operations to Enclave shut in. Could be pretty cool and realistically everything you need is there wether they’re making a more traditional CoD or a more recent style one. Plenty of weapons to work with, power armor unit could serve as the juggernaut, virtabird chopper gunners and gunships, Stingray bombing runs, mini nuke killstreak.
And not only fallout but they could do other franchises like Terminator. A CoD set in the Terminator post judgment day war would be sick too!

Yeah fallout 3 suffered roughly from trying to translate a bunch of 2d sprites to a 3d open world space. People knock it for not being able to side with the enclave but fallout 2 didnt give you that choice either. Fallout 3 was a lot of firsts in trying to find its footing and figure out how to adapt the game, and new vegas improved on it. (Too bad 4 just forgot that and went back to square negative one tho)
