Please take your time and read the notes included at the beginning and along the video. They’ll help you understand the comparison.
Please also consider subscribing to the channel if you like the video. This is a very time consuming activity, I make this just as a hobby and the only way to know that it’s worth the effort is the statistics of the channel. I have no message for the mankind, but I need to know if you like what I do, if that makes sense. :-)
    Video sections:
    Played by hand
    00:06 Information about the comparison
    00:49 Simple sawtooth sound
01:08 Sawtooth filter sweep without resonance. Longest attack and release times
01:36 Sawtooth filter sweep. Maximal resonance. Longest attack and release times
02:14 How do the synths feel, when you play several keys?
02:44 Same thing, but with fully opened filter
    Sequenced by Metropolix
03:24 Percussive sawtooth sound without resonance
O4:01 Sawtooth sound with resonance and sub oscillator
04:40 Sawtooth with 100% sub oscillator and full resonance
05:27 Sub oscillator with maximal resonance. A wooden sound
06:11 Sub oscillator and noise generator at maximal levels
    06:40 Classic Roland square sound
07:15 Acid-like sound with resonance and portamento. Pulse width modulation by LFO
08:02 Tribute sequence to “LFO - Frequencies”
09:18 Square wave with a little amount of noise
10:02 Square wave with resonance and slow attack time for a softer sound
10:51 Sawtooth with filter modulation by LFO
12:00 Sequence with portamento, resonance and LFO-modulated filter
13:24 Sawtooth, square and sub oscillator at maximal level
14:33 Dark percussive square wave patch

Thanks, you've provided lots of inspiration to experiment with the sequencer - The model 82 is one of the best soft synth purchases I've ever made (amount the hundreds I've bought)

13:59 The best sound on the 101 in this comparison and while Model 82 was able to be relatively close in previous examples, here, when it counts, it drops the ball. Of course, I don't know wether different settings would have been better. I doubt it because it seems to me like a sound character discrepancy. Not in a million years would I use this particular sound of the Model 82 in my music.

One flaw is the Model 82's square wave is literally square, whereas the 101 doens't have an actual square but more of a saw/square hybrid. Still think Tal's Bassline is a closer replica

I've noticed in all of your screenshots the drive parameter is not at 0, but something like 0.6. The drive knob removes a lot of the high end, and clips the signal - maybe not that much at this low setting - but could be accounted for the slightly less punch and attack.

Thanks for letting me know. In fact I noticed several times that after setting a parameter to zero with the mouse, I released the mouse button and then the parameter would jump back a little over zero. I guessed that happened too when I set the drive parameter to zero. As you said, results may be unaffected, but everyone can try at home if the minimal difference makes also a different sound.

If you use the synth to play instead of sequencing , the softube is much better : it adds velocity , aftertouch and a progressive modulation

Absolutely right. The software is like an advanced or modern version of the original hardware. You can even set up a polyphonic, MPE-enabled 101 investing some time. For convenience, the software puts the hardware to shame. However, playing the SH-101 is a total different experience. Software can’t touch it. And I don’t mean only the sound. It’s the whole package. Getting the hardware or the software is today more about your way of interacting with the instrument than a real sound difference, imho. :-)

    Have you tried Tal's version?

No, with the real SH-101 and the Roland Boutique version my 101-needs are covered. :-)

Nice try, but analogue sounds better. Even the MS-1 sounds a lot closer to the 101... I compared them in my studio. Indistinguishable.

I still prefer the hardware version, but I was positively surprised with the Model 82. :-)
